I saw NOFX play all of Punk in Drublic at riot fest a few years back. After they finished, they said “Ok, the festival said we have time for one more song!” And started playing the Decline for about 15 minutes until they literally just shut the sound off. One of the countless reasons I fucking love this band.

It's actually a valve trombone which is kind of like the bastard child of a trumpet+trombone affair. The tubing is longer than a trumpet, similar to a trombone, but it uses valves instead of a slide.
Jesus, what an epic, albeit depressing as shit anthem. God I love NOFX. One of my favorite bands of all time. I just get so fuckin sad that I've loved them since I was 7, now I'm almost 25, and the world is even more fucked than when I first heard them.

They opened with this in Toronto a bunch of years ago.. The place came unglued .5 seconds into the intro. It took all of 4 seconds to lose my shoe and I spent the next hour and a half going wild, one foot soaked from the sweat raining off the roof. Good times
Just wow... I have such a strong emotional reaction to this song every time I hear it. There have been 4 things that have brought a tear to my eye on the last 20 years. The birth of each of my children. The sight of my beautiful wife walking down the isle. The death of a loved one... and this song. It is so good. I'm not sure if it's just extreme nostalgia or the musicality of the song or what but wow. A true masterpiece
I've had the privilege of watching this set a hand full of times live. Only once have I've seen Fat Mike get all the words right lol. Dont worry bro. Just look in the pit and find me singing along and knowing every word, rift, beat. I cant imagine doing a 20 minute set. Smellys arms must feel like rubber by the end.
I have had the same experience, every time I’ve seen this live he’s flubbs it royally usually right before the “Saratonin’s gone….” breakdown, if anything it’s incredible he plays all those bass lines and sings at the same time…..! The line he plays moments before they rip into “place a wager on your freedom, wager on your pride…” is incredibly difficult on its own aside from after 4 measures he sings over it, quite passionately might I sneak in there……With me always since a tender 14 years old, many moons ago. So long and thanks for all the shoes guys…..

It's actually a valve trombone which is kind of like the bastard child of a trumpet+trombone affair. The tubing is longer than a trumpet, similar to a trombone, but it uses valves instead of a slide.
2024 checking in. Time is a flat circle I guess. But maybe,
"Once there was only dark. If you ask me, light's winning."
I can only hope.
This is my 4 year olds favorite song. Just ordered him a nofx tee for Christmas. Raising him right
hell yeah
Just know that if you take your kid to a show he'll probably learn about felching.
Jesus, what an epic, albeit depressing as shit anthem. God I love NOFX. One of my favorite bands of all time. I just get so fuckin sad that I've loved them since I was 7, now I'm almost 25, and the world is even more fucked than when I first heard them.
Jeremy Thomas at the dawn of time humans were claiming shit is more fucked than ever... at the very first moment! unfuckinbelievable you humans are!
Jeremy Thomas You'd think we'd have our shit figured out by now. Over a decade of war with no end in sight, and the decline of America. Shit sucks, and I thought things would look brighter by now, but things just look more and more fucked up as time goes on.
b42w4242 It's sad people care more about celebrities than the fact our government is arming radical jihadists and Mexican drug cartels. And yes, more wars to come.
Ya life gets shittier and shitter as you age and so does the world.
@Gonzisonsbc... Ya I know... Most (key word most) people in the US are fucking ignorant and if it doesn't affect them then they don't care... They would rather follow Kim Kardashians hair styles then give a fuck about innocent children, women and men brutally murderd by weapons supplied by their own country. It's a very fucking sad and pathetic way to live.
Give me goosebumps every single time. I’ve seen them 3 times and never heard it live… I’ve got a few more chances left😢
Serotonin's gone.
She gave up, drifted away.
I love this part
And so we go, on with our lives
We know the truth, but prefer lies
Lies are simple, simple is bliss
Why go against tradition when we can
Admit defeat, live in decline
Be the victim of our own design
The status quo, built on suspect
Why would anyone stick out their neck?
Always been my favourite part too!
Mine too, dont you ever forget it!
what about this part:
I wish I had a schilling
(For each senseless killing)
For every senseless killing
I'd buy a government
America's for sale
And you can get a good deal on it
(A good deal on it)
And make a healthy profit
Or maybe, tear it apart
Start with assumption
That a million people are smart
Smarter than one
Pedro Simon Medina Guevara my favorite part also!::!

of he best ballads in musical history, and the best punk song ever to capture the epitome of the genre.
I’m an insurance rep. Cool member told me to listen to this song. Members like this remind me why I love my job 😂
21 years later and this song still tops the list of all time best punk rock song. It does not get old.
If you think this is the best punk song, you obviously don’t know SHIT about punk. You’re an embarrassment to the movement by your ignorant statement.
@@MrJason138 The "movement" was 25 years ago man, you missed it. Are you still living in your parents basement because the rest of us moved on.
NOFX are absolute the punk rock elite,Thanx for all the everything you guys,my life wouldn't be the same without you,we all love you in Washington state. enjoy the rest of your lives boys,I don't know if any of you can just quit music,we will see, cheers!!!
First time I listened to this song: I cried
Second time: Same
Every time after: Same
There's just so much here, so much emotion built up to an exploding point. I know it doesn't necessarily _sound_ like a "crying" song, but dammit, that's just the direction my brain goes in.
Mine too. My brain is wired to cry when I feel something strongly, whether it's music that I love, or just laughing hard.
Brings so many different emotions. So powerful
Same
I discovered this song in 2001 and it's held the top spot as my favorite song ever since. the relevance of it is even stronger today.
I didn't listen to this one in a while. Takes a all new meaning everytime the world's hits a new low bar. Thank you NOFX for that masterpiece.
Came to the same realization a few days ago
I put this on in every bar on the jukebox to make sure the the 20 min message gets delivered. 💯 lol 😆 love this band for ever. Wont stop either
I've listened to this song so many times I can sing it word for word.. NOFX will always be my favorite band.
+GeorgeTheThrid bro your drunk go to bed.
We used to go to the movies, a 40 minute drive. 🤣🤘 The group would trade off the cd player, a song per person.
I brought this, once 🤣
We made a community mix after that, mp3 disc days. I slid it in there still

Hey man, y'all have good taste, and that can't be taught. It's a shame but we know anyone listening to this music is too smart for humanity. Rock on forev tho amigos
Sorry for your brother man.
Quit yr fucking job if you have to, mate!!
Saw them play the entire Decline live at the House of Blues in Orlando. It was beautiful.
It just never gets old. I can listen to it back to back and it's just as amazing. This is a timeless masterpiece.
Reporting in on 4/16/20. I used to listen to this song a lot in high school during 2002 and let me tell you, sadly nothing has changed. I hope if you read this in the future things are vastly different. Aww, who am I kidding....he's got his and I've got mine, meet the decline... :(
Don’t think (Stay)
Drink your wine (Home)
Watch the fire burn (Be)
His problems not mine (Safe)
Just be that model citizen.
This isn't the song we want (just kidding :P, it's freaking awesome), but the song we deserve.
Em Friesen,...holy crap! After years of listening to this song you just opened my eyes! Nice
Now it makes sense man!
well.. pretty relevant lyrics in these times
@@AngrierGorilla The relevance is eerie...
They opened with this in Toronto a bunch of years ago.. The place came unglued .5 seconds into the intro.
It took all of 4 seconds to lose my shoe and I spent the next hour and a half going wild, one foot soaked from the sweat raining off the roof. Good times
I wonder if my 6% battery will last the whole song.
Elp Smith did it make it? it took 5% of mine lol
+Gerry Spaeth. Nah I was able to go get my charger though so it was good
Elp Smith my fingers are crossed for you you will have yer eyes open to that Barry Mantelow n bleeding out the brown
i hope so!

Constipated parker Best name avatar picture combo in the entire youtube comment section. you sir have made me smile
legend is they recorded it perfectly on the first attempt
Masterpiece of music.
One of the best songs ever created. Ever. Period.

And that’s still an understatement lol!
A masterpiece. One of the greatest songs ever…
One of?
I have to agree... What's better?
wow i just noticed that it doesn't fade out, it actually ends. listen on high volume with headphones at 18:05
I never caught that! Lol awesome.
It's been 18 minutes and I still want to hit the repeat button.
This is definitely my most played jukebox song at the dive bar (and many others). The bartenders hate it 🫠
i quit drinking but this still makes me lol

Wow 20 years of listening to NOFX and this is the first time I ever listened to this song lol. Fuck I am stupid.
I am surprised to say the same thing. First time listen and WOW! Just epic!
That's crazy.
Least ya didn't die before that happened. Good job! Hahaha

There is some masterful word play going on here
Did fat wreck chords monetise this video with adverts? Been interrupted three times. This is not the song in your catalogue to monetise with ads, guys. You kinda kill the whole thing.

Every time
The best part. I do the same as you.
Makes me cry every time
This outro has to be one of the greatest moments in music, period
Listening to this today after all this time makes me realize we've learned absolutely nothing from the mistakes of our past. The decline is even steeper than it was when this EP was released in 1999 with no apparent signs of improving. Cheers to the downfall of humanity y'all.
dont think..... drink your wine
I agree. Still we are still here to make for a better today. Oi!
yes dude, I feel a little bit sorry for humanity too. this song was written before 9-11 and it was miles before it happened. and yeah most people of us are right except all stupid ones out there and sick goverments.
Lol humanity has never learned. It's a slow grind.

Hi to everyone coming here after Nov 5th 2024. Seemed like a fitting way to “celebrate” the occasion.
Out of curiosity, I have and always will be punk but there is one thing I cannot understand. When did it become normal for punks to go along with mainstream media narratives?
@@kanipshun4216 And what is your narrative? That the punks should be happy with yet another NRA and church-supporting authoritarian billionaire republican taking over because it's somehow not mainstream? 🤡
@@kanipshun4216 Paul Ryan, is that you?
Ignorance might often be bliss, but many sections of this song definitely feel quite relevant recently...
Fear of god, the fear of change
The fear of truth
Add the bill of rights, subtract the wrongs
Memorize and sing star spangled songs
When the questions aren't ever asked
Is anybody learning from the past?
We're living in united stagnation
The Christians love their guns
The church and NRA
Pray for their salvations
Prey on the lower faiths
The story book's been read
And every line believed
Curriculum's been set
Logic is a threat, reason searched and seized
Don't think
Drink your wine
Watch the fire burn

Been like this for a long time on both sides of politics. Until the masses unite under a new party and say no to the war on on drugs, no to to wars overseas, no to the federal reserve and no to welfare we are fucked.
