  • Pocket stones are a useful tool. If you carry one. Check out Dan's Whetstone's and eBay for them. They are fairly inexpensive. 🐓

    I remember those old men setting around at the local store. Sharping a pocket knife. With a pocket stone. Those old cases had a hi carbon steel. Easy to sharpen. But they knew what they were doing. LOL 😅

    I have a cool old 1" x3" pocket stone from dans. Bought it over 15 years ago from ragweed forge for $3. Its grey with black specs, then has orange streaks. Ive alwas kept it lapped on the course side of a norton india. I used to think that pocket stones were time consuming. Then i found, the best way to sharpen is to finish on the transluscent with a bevel about 5 degrees steeper than how it was sharpened. When using a pocket stone in the field, i then make a few strokes on this steeper microbevel to align everything and im good. Then after a few times of touch ups, hit the bench stones and sharpen on the propper bevel

      @@roughroosterknifesharpenin5531 it works good for out and about touch ups. I'd like to get some Arkansas pocket stones too. I'll probably look at Dan's when I decide to get another one. Those diamond plates should be here Thursday!

    So many reasons why I love using pocket Stones. Cuz I watched this one in 5 parts I'm not sure if u touched on havjng a pocket stone on hand to sharpen stuff for others. Chances are they know your into knives and u check out their dangerously dull blades. Something on hand can not only display skill but prevent a accident from happening. I too lap my Stones the same way, one side for grunt work and the other side as a polish side if that makes sense. I could use em almost exclusively if I wanted to. Latest ones are the dog bones from gritomstic. I haven't used em enough but they are the size of a bar from a kit Kat bar, but double sided resin bonded Stones.

    i found it funny to mention that i can not for the life of me sharpen of full size stones, but pocket stones on the other hand, hair whittling sharp in no time

    I like small stones for this very reason; they are easy to carry around. I don't always carry one in my pocket, but I have a 6"x2"x1/2" low grit Carborundum stone and a small pocket size 4"x1&5/8x 1/2" Soft Ark that stays in my car 24/7. Very convenient to have when you need it, and doesn't take much room.

    The green one is silicon carbide, more course/abrasive than the regular black silicon carbide.

    Great video, as always!! I feel humbled when I watch 'the master'at work. Just a question, when you use a pocket stone in the field, do you hold it in your hand or secure it somewhere to be used like a mini bench stone? Also, what are your thoughts about the circular motion some old timers and Scandanavian sharpeners often employ with their pocket stones? I have always found getting the angle right tricky when reversing the knife and coming back towards my thumb. Any thoughts and tips are greatly appreciated!! Frank (Australia)

      @roughroosterknifesharpenin5531  4 года назад +1

      I hold it between my index middle and thumb. But however it works is what you need to do.
      The circular motion is good to. I never use it. But it does work

      @@roughroosterknifesharpenin5531 - thanks for getting back to me and being specific. This is the reason I like you because it takes me a while to learn to do something well. I'm a teacher by trade and know the value of good teaching with clear explanations. You explain things in easily understood terms then break it down further.
      Heard the US had a horrific amount of Covid-19 deaths yesterday so, stay safe, brother and don't shit around with this virus. It's a nasty one that no-one knows enough about yet.
      P.S. Would love to see you one day sharpen a filleting knife. I love my fishing and with filleting, the tip of the knife is everything. No rush, when you're ready and in the mood!

    Regarding Dan's Arkansas whetstones, when purchasing stones would you recommend a combination stone or 2 individual stones? Just getting started and I'm considering a 8x2x0.5" soft arkansas from Dan's.

      It's just a matter of preference. They have good combo stones. And solid one piece stones. I have a black soft combo and I love it. Call Kim down there and talk to her. She will help you as well.
