  • Take a tour along with me, maybe we can together, we can both learn more. I started collecting natural stones several years ago, but have recently kicked it into high gear. Lot's of little mysteries still left to unlock.
I like to hang out, sell and buy antique tools over at the Can I Have It? Facebook group. Come join the fun and tell them Adamo sent you 😉

I agree, I bet those small stones you have are a form of Tam O Shanter, maybe the "newer" mined WoA Blue version. A lot were cut that way.

Thüringen is German and pronounced: Tyringen, stress on the first syllable.

I wonder if your unknown Washita-like stones are type of Hindostan. There was a version often called "Washita-style" when sold at times.

So I tried looking for those yellow stones a while ago and the closest I found was on alibaba with a description of "Yellow oil stone strip Sharpening Polishing stone for HSS/steel"

Those look exactly like them! But why Silicon Carbide would ever be yellow, is it's own mystery to me still. I do find I prefer light colored sharpening stones in general, it's more a matter of seeing the swarf clearly, than anything else. Too bad there is a minimum 500pc order on the Huyai brand from Alibaba... It's kind of tempting still though...

This is a great overview of the different types of stones. It seems like we can use just about any kind of homogenous stone to sharpen, I’d imagine the sandstone would wear faster though?

Actually the sandstones seem more durable than Waterstones, in my experience. And they have a really nice slurry too.

    You mentioned old world stones
I have never heard that before and I was wondering what an old world stone is and how it's different from a more modern sharpening stone

I use the term 'old world' a little loosely, almost as a term of art, if you will. I would call any antique sharpening stone from over seas a true "old world", but you may catch me using the same term for antique Arkansas stones, which are visually different from the modern and vintage ones. In practice, new or old Novaculites are very similar, when you judge them by Specific Gravity, so far as I can tell, thus far.

Old world means during the dinosaur period. LOL

What about the belgium blue!! Unless i missed it?🤔
Theyre good one to keep around, got mine the same time i got my coticule. Cant get enough of them garnets!

Truth be told Mr. Toaster... I kind of 'hate' Belgian Blue Whetstones. That's not to say they can't be good, or aren't fine. I have seen some variation and quality differences in the examples I have studied, and it is a rather small sample size. In short, my general impression of BBW's is that they are slow and 'dull'. I have heard that the old timers used them before and/or after the Coticule, so I am not 100% sure where to fit them into my honing progression. I will keep investigating.

The two brown ones that you are unsure of are man made India stones.

Yes indeed, antique ones too none the less. Tiger head logo, Quick & Sharp type, etc.
