    I have the three Arks, and I'll probably get the translucent in the future. Of the soft and hard, the one labeled soft is the solid white stone, and the hard is the white marble one, but the hard feels much rougher. Are they mislabeled, or do I need to work on them more?

    • @roughroosterknifesharpenin5531
      @roughroosterknifesharpenin5531 4 дня назад

      @@morehn that is a really good question and I've never thought about it but my thoughts are the hard Arkansas is more dense therefore it's harder so you would receive a repercut then a soft Arkansas The soft isn't necessarily softer It's just less dense and more porous if that makes sense.

    • @morehn
      @morehn 4 дня назад

      @@roughroosterknifesharpenin5531 wouldn't that mean that the soft should feel coarser or rougher? Trying to figure out why it feels like the soft one grips the knife less than the hard one, when the soft one is supposed to be more abrasive, or a lower grit equivalent.

    Years later but here is my 2¢. Using pliers, I break the blades into 3-4 inch pieces. Drill holes for lanyard as needed. I also file down the teeth of the hack saw blade. This keeps the HS blade from tearing up your ferro rod. Not all they way but half the original height. The blades are flexible when cut to the right length. The flexing does a lot of the work for you and it seems to make directing the sparks easier. Also, Magnesium shavings can be made by using a drill to create the shavings. The coarseness of the shavings depends on the size of the drill bit. It is probably cheaper to just buy by the bag but you can make some for that weekend outing if you do not have the bagged magnesium on hand. Harbor Freight still sells the magnesium striker bars for $1.69 each.

    You know I've been thinking about this video, and concluded I don't think this comparison is quite right after all because we're comparing a heavy duty degreaser to a regular one. To make this fair, I think we need to compare heavy duty with heavy duty. Try with Simple Green Pro HD (HD standing for Heavy Duty) against Dawn Heavy Duty and see which one comes on top from that. Simple green has a different makeup and composition than Pro HD and they're both purple as well by the way.

    Wait so you're telling me if I want a real Dan's Arkansas Stone translucent or black I have to order it and wait 2 years????? Dude what takes it so long? Like that alone is stopping me from getting a good stone because I'm way too impatient to wait too freaking years. Like kind of disappointed but it seems like this is a marketing strategy by Dan to only release so many a year to keep the price and the rarity and prestige around his brand of stones because if it's hard to get and you got to get on a waiting list it makes it seem like you got to be part of the inside club to get it. That might be why people use cheap stones that you hate on them for because people don't want to just sit around and wait for 2 years for a sharpening stone. I guess I'm going with diamond plates 😭. Damn Dan

You inspired me to pick up and try good arks ( after having tried shit cheap ones many years ago ), after years of being happy with diamond plates and Japanese water stones, both natural and synthetic. After my learning journey with my set of Dan's arks( Soft, Hard, Translucent, Black all 10x3x1 or larger ) picked up over the course of a few years I've gotten an edge too sharp to even whittle my wife's pixie thin hair. Just pops in two as soon as it touches it. Just want to say thanks for making me give arks a second chance. Hope you hop on again for a sharpening or discussion stream, and hope all is well. Cheers, Chef Kev
