Sorry to be difficult, but I'm not sure your assumption is correct that soft substances are easier to clean than hard substances. Consider: if you drew with an indelible marker on a piece of steel and on a piece of wood, which would be easier to clean? In my world it's the non-porous, harder substance because the stain does not sink in below the surface. When you clean a non-porous substance, you are just wiping off ink adhering to the surface. The softer, porous substance absorbs the stain and you have a much harder time cleaning the stain because it is as much below the surface as on it.

When you think bout it however, the dawn degreaser is SPECIFICALY made for removing grease. Simple Green is an All Purpose Cleaner, that has a much more gentle formula so it can be used on more surfaces.

A pourus stone will absorb grime. Is that apples to apples?

  • @qazmko22
    @qazmko22 2 года назад +3

    This is an interesting comparison.
I guess the degreaser works better as a degreaser.
and the all-purpose cleaner is really a jack of all trades and a master of none.
But I still suggest Simple Green for cleaning bicycles and and small to medium jobs around the house.

Nice test. Thanks for posting it!
Simple Green really is safer than virtually all other degreasers for both humans and the environment (and even surfaces when compared to lye based decreases like purple power and super clean) so I use it whenever it's suitable but I agree that it's a mid tier degreaser.
Here's my hierarchy of degreasers, from most effective but least used for various cleaning (not for stones):
    #1 Super Clean.
SDS says it's a skin, eye, and inhalation irritant. OSHA class 2 hazard.
Damages aluminum, and with prolonged contact can damage paint and glass.
    #2 Spray Nine.
SDS says it's not an OSHA hazard, but may be an eye, skin and inhalation irritant.
    Has a gross perfume scent.
    #3 Simple Green.
Works great on dirt, but not as good on grease as the others.
Very safe. Not an irritant. Not an OSHA hazard. Biodegrades in 56 days.
Safe for aluminum (unless it's left in crevices where it's not rinsed away), and paint when dilluted 1:16.
This Dawn degreaser appears safer than Super Clean. After watching this, I wonder if it could replace it for me.
WD-40 also has a fairly new degreaser that's as safe as Simple Green but I haven't used it. I would like to compare them.

@@roughroosterknifesharpenin5531 Thanks for posting this comparison. WD-40, like using mineral oil, works as a degreaser by easily rapidly breaking apart and diluting the grease. They work phenomenally well as a step one safe degreaser, finished by any good simple detergent & water based soap as step two. Dawn would work great for step two as well. WD-40 and mineral oil are not the ideal thing to use for everything, but for many degreasing jobs, they are, as they work faster and safer than a lot of alternatives.

The beauty of the green is it is just really passive. I think the way it works is it is a non polar fluid like oil so they are compatible with each other and one of the actives breaks down the oil on a molecular level where it precipitates to the bottom. It's just slower... And you can keep using the same contaoner of it until it damn near looks like motor oil and it keeps going all the same. I have a Tupperware I threw three filthy washitas in like a week ago sealed it and just put it away till I felt like dealing with that. I'll tape it when I pull them for a check. I just like the passive nature of the method of action and no heat. This dawn I could see being really useful on a stone I would never want to soak like a japanese natural that got cross contaminated (they are a nuisance and the way you usually have to strip oil from a jnat is sealing it packed in salt in an airtight container for a long span). That's miserable. I have considered brake cleaner in the past on bad things like really soaked hindostans but never tried it.

Yeah Dawn wins. For cleaning the house I recommend Pinesol and other diluted cleaners like that. It is cheap and smells great, and is also pretty gentle on furniture. How do you think dish soap and water would work for removing metal out of the stones? I usually use that and a scrub brush like the one you used in the video. To make this test more fair, the same stone should have been used for both of them. Like if it didn't work in simple green, place the same stone half way into the dawn and see if it cleans then. Because while it is the same material, the dirt, how porous it is etc might make the difference. That said, simple green doesn't clean a whole lot, and its actually used to strip paint in the vice collector world. It takes a week or so but all paint is wrinkled and ready for removal.

Dawn dish soap ( the blue stuff ) and simple green 50/50 mix for the best degreaser you've ever used...
Full concentrate just spray it on and it will stick. Let it bite in, scrub rinse repeat... Hot water works best...
    It won't kill cast aluminum...
The dawn is thick, it gives the stick you need for the simple green to bite in and do it's work...
Yes I've used purple power and super clean but I prefer my lungs and not melting aluminum...
As for spray nine it's amazing but only diluted to clean interiors, I'm not a fan of how it can stain plastics at full strength, it's strong enough to have a bleaching affect on plastics and it has a very strong odor.... It cleans people grime awesome... Coffee, skin grime, blood, it disinfects...
I use dawn dish soap to clean cars and for water sanding...
Diluted dawn ( a tablespoon ) in a 5 gal bucket of hot water with a micro fiber is perfect for preliminary interior detail wipe down...
I love Dawn it's an awesome product, the combination of it with simple green make for a potent sticky degreaser...

Sorry but this is not a good comparison. Simple Green All Purpose is a gentle degreaser. Its designed to be gentle on the surface you are trying to clean.
Compare Dawn Degreaser with Simple Green® Pro HD Heavy-Duty Cleaner. You will have a similar result. Also simple Green all purpose has a safer choice certification so it is less harmful to you. But yes Dawn would win when comparing to simple green all purpose. But SImple Green Pro HD Heavy Duty will perform similar to Dawn Degreaser. The heavy degreaser is not good to use on delicate surface so you would use a gentle cleaner. Like SImple green all purpose

      This is a excellent comparison.
Everyone kept coming on my channel and throughout the community saying simple green will degrease stones. And my degreaser trick don't work. This was the first time using the dawn type. I usually use purple power. But since I use Dawn and water to sharpen I thought I'd try this stuff. And sorry... But you are sadly mistaken about the simple green crap. It does not work the same. Maybe if you watch some of my other 200 videos you'll understand.

Those are pocket sharpening stones. You didn't watch the video or pay attention at all. Or both.
