I first heard this reording in Primary School in the 1960's and have been trying to track it down ever since. All I had to go on was the L.P. cover. Hearing it again after 50 years is such a treat. For me it's the best recording ever. I really like the pace - it's a lot more exciting than more recent recordings.
Nadie iguala a Toscanini en el crescendo al inicio del tercer movimiento (de 17:35 a 18.35); el sonido de la ola en 18:28 es extraordinaria. Ninguna grabación moderna lo iguala. Eso es el MAR
Celibidace interpretation is too slow, the spirit of Debussy is not in this. I'm french, I know and love and understand more than you can imagine Debussy's music, and I'm fed up with Celibidace's fans. Stop trolling everywhere, thank you. The tense in this recording is just amazing and so close to Debussy's taste and french feeling that this is by far the best recording of "La mer" I've ever heard. The phrasé is so natural. Lines are clear, nothing is too much lined out or neglected... This is so french, so debussystic...

Orthophonie High Fidelity !! Ultra directional microphone suspended 16 ft above Maestro Toscanini's head. Better than any modern digital recording !

Magnífica interpretação!
Thank you very much! I have been looking everywhere for this!
Straordinario e inarrivabile.
Great! The ideal rendition of this piece. Toscanini's music is no rigid, mechanical but natural.
Ottima.
これはまさに函館の立待岬から津軽海峡の荒海を眺めているところを描いているようです。
At 22:08, all the other interpretations Ive heard have additional bass for a few seconds here. Did Toscanini just remove them?
7:47
Celibidache's version is better.
Sir, I stand corrected. I have subsequently realised how two interpretations of the same work can be worlds apart.
Celibidace interpretation is too slow, the spirit of Debussy is not in this.

the spirit of Debussy don't need to be in it. celibidache's (f.ex.) suffices.
ps. a general reaction. I'm no celibidache fan.
