    Hi Mark- Great Sunday Sit-down; thank you! Glad you are feeling a bit better. Rest and recuperation, as you know, are the key things for the moment. Wishing you all the best. Looking forward to seeing you use the wonderful razor you showed us today when you are up to it. Please take good care and all the best, my friend!

    I just today discovered your channel today and enjoyed this chat immensely. I also have migraines: Keep Calm and Carry On. My maternal granddad was a captain in WWI in the Canadian corps of engineers, called sappers. He used to say: 'That's the only secret of engineering, build it one day, wait till it's blown up, then build it again.' His family was from Lincolnshire, stone masons over centuries, and he lived to see Lincoln's bombing in WWII. He also continually cursed the USA for entering WWI so late. Before I remotely had whiskers he gave me the Gillette razor he used on the front, underground mostly. The razor looks different to the you showed in this video. I think my granddad's is called a 'ball end'' or something like that. In gratitude for your video, I'd be very happy to pass it on to you, but I do not know your post address. Perhaps you know it already but there's a vivid account of trench WWI warfare in a novel titled 'Bird Song,' the reference being to the birds in cages the sappers took to detect poison gas before the 'engineers' did. Sorry to be going on so long, just want to say how much I appreciate you chat today. -Geoff

    • @FriendshipShaving
      @FriendshipShaving  5 лет назад

      Wow, that's terrific Geoff, I really enjoyed reading your tale about your Grandfather. Those sappers did a tremendously difficult job under very difficult conditions. I'll look out for Bird Song, thank you. I'm becoming more and more interested in WW1 and it's because I just cannot imagine being in something like that. It is called a ball end razor. They often split, on the handle. Are you sure, you want to give me your Grandfathers razor? That's very kind of you but you could have it restored and keep it as a piece of your family history. However, I would be grateful to accept it, should you wish. I'm at happy-mark@live.co.uk should you wish to contact me, I'll send you my address. All the best and thanks for saying hello 👍😃

    Hi Mark, sorry to hear that you are ill. Glad you are getting better. And thank you for your video today. I found it very, very interesting. My grandfather participated in War I and II and he used to shave with a straight razor. In the late 50s, he then switched to electric (the early Remingtons) as he got older and began to feel insecure using a blade. Hope you get well soon!

    • @FriendshipShaving
      @FriendshipShaving  5 лет назад

      Thank you, for your good wishes, Enrico. I really appreciate the thought. That's very interesting about your Grandfather. I hope I don't ever have to shift to an electric. I have tried a few, when I was younger, but I've just never got along with them. My Dad liked his electric razor, though. Perhaps, even with an electric, it's all down to technique.

    Really Really Enjoyed This! Thank you so very much for speaking of the film coming out. I watched all the snippets and trailers of it and... please pardon the pun, but I was blown away! Amazing the color restoration!! Put a new twist of reality on this era of truly brave men. Liked it so much I had to use my Old Type Razor this morning. BBS shave all around and would've been Military Regulation Approved 😊 Take Care of yourself! I look forward to more chats.

    I am late to the party(in terms of knowing that you have been sick)and I am very sorry to learn that you underwent such distress. I hope the remnants of the flu clear up quickly. Unfortunately, I've had a situation that I absolutely had/have to deal with and it interfered with my usual wet shaving viewing habits and posting of SOTD photos and etc. Probably by the time you read this; I will have completely dealt with the matter.
    As for this video: it was most enjoyable to see your pride and joy and learn something of its Origin(s) as well as some of the other non shave related content. This segment came across like a Commercially produced documentary! EXTREMELY well done! ;-)

    The return of wet shaving may well be a result of a desire to create less waste. For me it is also the pleasure of things taking time, as a reaction to the race to always save time.

    I want to tell you that this razor comes apart very easily. I had an experience with a 34c. I pulled the bottom off & I could not put it back together. I had someone look at it and Thank God was able to do it. (VLS)

    • @FriendshipShaving
      @FriendshipShaving  5 лет назад

      Thank you buddy. The bottom, on these old razors, is meant to come off. Merkur made their's a little differently by making a retaining clip, so that it wouldn't fall off. I did the same thing when I had a 34c! It's easily done.

      Your welcome Keith and thank you. I could never get the blade on my Rolls razor sharp enough to shave comfortably with. At the time, I didn't know anyone that would hone. In the end, after a couple of awful shaves, I gave up and moved it on. Good luck 😉

    That was a great Sunday sit-down. Another razor military set that the US had during WW1 was the Ever-Ready set. It had the razor and 2 blade banks in a khaki canvas snap pouch.

      Thanks buddy 👍 Yes, of course. The khaki set was very popular for Ever Ready. I've noticed that a lot of Star a razors come up for sale on the French eBay. It just struck me as interesting that they have a lot of Star's rather than Ever Ready. Take care.

    Hi Mark. Glad to hear you are feeling better. I got the same flu in December last year and it knocked me out completely. I spent 3 days in bed without moving, so I know what it feels like. It took weeks before I felt back to normal. I've just ordered a WWII British Army open comb razor from Military Industries. It was made in 1945 and wasn't issued, so it is in the same condition that it was when it left the factory. It looks pretty basic from the pictures, so I will let you know how I get on with it. My father was in WWII, so I am looking forward to using it to find out how he must have got on with it. Great video, as always. Please keep making them.

      Hey mate. How was my German? It's probably best you don't answer that. 😃 I enjoyed it. I'll have to look into German WW1 razors and history, at some point. Hello Mark, thank you for a very interesting talk on shaving history. I really enjoy this type of video. Great to see you back again!

    • @FriendshipShaving
      @FriendshipShaving  5 лет назад

      Hi David. Thank you for your kind words. The book is not the best, but it is inexpensive. It is 'Vintage Shaving Advertisements' compiled by Hugh Morrison. There seem to be a lot of adverts for the same few companies. However, I've included the links below which might help. There are some interesting looking books to download - I wonder if any ever appear second hand, and the archive is a fantastic resource. There is also an advertisements section at mr-razor.com and I have found that if you type vintage razor advertising into eBay, it's amazing what comes up for sale. I just find them interesting to read through. I hope this helps. I'm sure it will keep you occupied 😃 Cheers.

    Expensive to say the least at 20 shillings and 1 penny when you understand that a soldier in the first world war got a shilling a day! So twenty days pay to buy that razor. In 1914, a labourer only earned 6 pence a day (2 1/2 pence in today's money) Which is why so many men signed up so quickly. Can you imagine doubling your wage over night and with everyone saying the war would be over by Christmas so many young men joined up thinking they would make hay while the sun shined only to go back to their previous job after Christmas.

    • @FriendshipShaving
      @FriendshipShaving  Год назад

      A shilling a day! Wow. That is a really good wage for the time. No wonder so many men and boys joined up. That has to be a plan by the government of the day! And, you would get fed too. Have you seen those awful videos of men with shell shock that are unable to control their bodies? Abysmal. Poor beggers.
