Before Hitting Your Irons & Woods Do This For 5 Seconds

- If you don't do this before each shot it doesn't matter how good your golf swing is...you will struggle to hit irons consistently and you won't be able to hit fairway woods. In this golf lesson Danny Maude reveals the 3 adjustments you need to make in order to play off sloping lies.
We all look to improve our golf swing off perfectly flat lies but you and I both know we never find a flat lie on the golf course. If you are wanting to know how to hit fairway woods or are simply looking how to hit an iron in golf then I would start right here. What you are going to learn is so important.

ABOUT DANNY
-----------------------
Thanks for stopping by. I created this website as a resource just for you to support you on your golfing journey as I know how tricky learning this game can be…to say the least!
I personally found learning the game too long and difficult in the early days. I read all the books, watched all the videos but my game was not improving. Then after studying various forms of neuro science, motor learning, psychology and personal development in less than two years I went from struggling golfer to the final stage of the Open Championship.
On RUclips and my personal website (www.dannymaude.com) I will bring you the most up to date training, training that is getting tangible results for my clients right now. I don’t know where you are in your golfing journey, you could be just starting out or maybe your body isn’t as flexible as it once was or you’ve got ambitions to slash your handicap. Wherever you are I’ve created a place here you can learn, share your ideas, ask questions and get all the support you need to enjoy this great game.
Be prepared though. If it's a quick fix you are after Im not your man. Here I will give you step-by-step advice that you can take straight to the practice ground and apply to the course but it will require you to get stuck in, screw up…a lot, practice some more and then watch those scores tumble
I’ve had the pleasure of coaching thousands of students all around the world and if you are up for the challenge and are ready to get in the game…LETS GO TO WORK!

and I hope to do all this with simple golf tips so you can create an effortless golf swing
Never skip a Danny Maude video ✊🏽
Really appreciate the support John
I’m a 2 and a half handicap and this still helped me! Been playing golf since I was little and automatically did this to adjust subconsciously a lot of the time but this helps me think of the physics behind it!
Thanks so much for taking the time to feedback
This is a wonderfully comprehensive lesson. Second shots on the holes where there are no level lies is often where the wheels come off in my competition rounds - I’ll bet that many people looking at this would benefit from reflecting on the holes at their home courses where they are guaranteed an uphill shot where the ball is below/above their feet - 12th and 14th at Canterbury for me and my compadres - and dialling up their attention level.
@@johnritchie8336 it’s amazing how many fat shots occur when without realising the ball is above your feet and you haven’t adjusted for it
Where were you when I needed you 30 years ago?! 😂😂
This might be the most valuable YT golf lesson I've ever seen- not just because I really need to know this, but you teach it in such a way that I think I will remember it.
Thanks Danny .
Thank you Andrew! Happy to help 😁
Danny, I love today’s lesson. I really benefit from on course real situations like you pointed out. I play on a course that is not a flat lie on the course so this is perfect. FYI - My golf game has drastically improved since I have been following and implementing your golf tips. I just shot my lowest round of my life 2 weeks ago and I am almost 65. I am once again a single digit handicap since I took up golf again last year and watched your videos endlessly. I have 5 in my favorites that I can easily watch and fix issues so quickly now. Thanks again for all your great instructions and keeping it so simple. Nobody does it better.
Thank you Dpceee 😁 appreciate the feedback and support 👍
Great video the only thing you didn’t mention was were to aim on uphill and downhill lies …uphill lies you are are prone to hit left so aim more right and visa versa for downhill lies 👍🏻
Absolutely Gary,
I just wanted to say thank you Danny for all you do, and to help manage expectations for others. Golf is hard! I went from a 14 HDCP to an 9 HDCP and could not have done it without you. However, it took six months of purposeful practice (including short game), about 4000 balls (50-70 balls per outing), extensive use of alignment sticks and video, and 1000s of slow motion drills at home. There are a lot of interrelated components in the golf swing (including the mental aspect) but I learned that you must get the grip, setup, and takeaway 100% correct. Only then should you move forward. Do not assume these critical elements are correct (chances are they are not) or you will forever be manipulating your swing to compensate for these errors. Use video or a trusted friend to verify what is real. You cannot trust what you feel! Good luck and have a structured and purposeful plan. And of course, keep watching the GOAT, Danny Maude!
@@rw_golf6387 that’s really kind, thanks so much for taking the time to share your feedback
Also I would add if you get good and consistent at something, record it because chances are you will lose it eventually and you wont know what you did good before without the footage.
@@outlander234 Great tip! I also keep a journal and have found that helps as well.
ive been slicing with my driver for 15 years..... id just play the slice because nothing was working --- your video fixed my swing in within 2 driving range sessions. thank you!!! subscribed!!! really like how you get the point across with animations and different views
Wonderful to hear
This is uncanny! I literally said to my wife after our round last Sunday that “I need a refresher on up/down/side hill lies”. Thank you Danny for this and all the great content!
Wow 😮 happy to help John 😁
When the ball is either below or above the feet, do you need to adjust the aim? I always believed that ball above the feet will send the ball left and opposite for ball below the feet. Great video Thank you!!!
Fantastic video and easy to understand. What I love most was the call back to the basic set up video from a few weeks ago at the beginning, ball placement doesn’t change, depth of stance does.
Thank you Marvin!
Without a doubt best instructor out there our Danny boy😊
Thanks so much for your support John
I always struggle with the uneven lie. Thanks for this lesson, Danny!
Thank you Tjv 😁
Brilliant once again Danny, this is something I really struggle with, uneven lies, it’s just trying to remember everything when you’re on the course. I have even made notes in my phone what to do on each lie, I will add your advice for sure
ball favours higher foot weight favours lower foot. Grip down on uphill lies, widen stance on ball below feet - As a starting point
Absolutely another brilliant lesson Danny! I think a lot of us amateur golfers do not account for how important course management is to scoring well. i know this lesson will help me (and I'm sure many many others)
Thank you Keith 😁
As always with your tuition, a great and clear explanation of what to do in different scenarios on the fairway. Thanks Danny
@davidgianotti10 thank you so much and you are most welcome 🙏🏻
Thanks for all the teachings Danny!
Happy to help Pandoboo 😁
Thanks Danny. Love your vids. I’m a member at Pupuke GC Auckland. It’s the course where Lydia Ko started her career at age 7. The course has 18 undulating holes. Never a level lie. Explains why she is so brilliant. Will try your ideas on Monday.
Thanks Frank, let me know how you get on 😁
Danny, if you ever put together a 'Best Of' set of videos this lesson has to be on the list. Really helpful info. Thanks!
Thank you Ted, appreciate the support 😁
Sound advise Danny, my home course is relatively flat but there are some subtle slopes will keep this in mind
Thanks for addressing this Will keep the spine angle in mind...!
Awesome to hear
Thanks Danny!
Pleasure
Thank you for another very helpful video.
I recommend the excellent practice plan summary & also
DANNY'S RULE . BALL FAVOURS HIGHER FOOT. WEIGHT FAVOURS LOWER FOOT.
Thanks Alan, appreciate the support!
Something that I've always struggled with. Thanks!
Happy to help James
I have been watching your videos a couple of weeks ago. All videos are helpful to improve my golf swing. Thank you for your lessons.
@byoungwooko7602 that’s great. Thank you so much for watching 🙏🏻
Was there a bit missing from these various lies? For example, I find the ball lower than my feet goes right of target and a ball above my feet goes left. So I do make a slight adjustment in my alignment for this. These effects are greater with the more lofted clubs. This just seems like Euclidian geometry concerning the club face, but it was not part of your adjustments. Do you make any adjustment for this altered face angle?
You certainly picked the right course to demonstrate the correct set up. Thanks Danny, tips worth remembering. I find it natural to adjust to the lie but wasn't away of the club selection for the different ball flights. Have a good week. Cheers
Thank you Matt 🙌
Nice video Danny. I feel like you should do a round with Peter Finch. The banter would be fantastic.
Great content Danny....learnt this early on from an older guy I used to play with in my early days....strangely I found these shots easier than standard shots.....
Thanks for sharing Ron
I'm so fortunate...... you don't live/work near me........ I'd go broke taking lessons from you DAILY! Seriously one of the best instructors online. Thank you Danny!
😂 thanks Frank happy to help!
Excellent as always Danny, just needed this yesterday morning as a reminder for my round yesterday. 😂
next time 😁
Cheers Danny. Perfect time for a reminder before I go to Scotland in September. Here in NL it’s a bit 🤔 flat😂.
Happy to help Terry!
Awesome videos Danny fair play, easy to understand and explain it very well 👍
Thank you James 🙏
thanks, danny! wrote these down to practice on our little par3! i unfortunately end up having a lot of these shots. so very appreciative of the video!!
Happy to help Kana 👍
Thanks!
Incredibly kind Anthony thank you
Danny, tried your tip today. Worked great on the uphill lie. Have to practice the down hill lie more
Happy to help Peter 😁
Always got the needed tips from Danny’s videos right before my weekend golf game👍🙏
@discus2007 thank you so much. Happy to help. Enjoy practicing 🙏🏻
Early mornings at Princes, you can’t beat it. Great advice too.
It was stunning Graham
Excellent Danny, 1 or 2 there that I wouldn’t have known about, thanks
happy to help
Danny, this was a nice video. Eventhough, I knew what to do, it is really nice to get to reminder and see the applications of the shot and what is involved. Tks. I don't miss any of your videos.
Thanks for the support Ted!
Absolutely first rate lesson. Playing well from these sorts of lies is essential. And these tips will help! Nice one Danny.
@sliderpunk thank you. Glad my video will help you 🙏🏻
A problem that has plagued my game for years Danny. I can’t wait to get out on the course and work on it. 👍
Love to hear how it goes James
THIS was a great video sir. You answered many issues for me in my game. I've been ok with above the feet but below was near impossible and downhill lies have been terrible. I'm going to try those out tomorrow :)
That was very useful Danny 👍
Glad it was helpful Gary
Very good information. I have struggled with all of these. Thanks for a formulated approach to each shot.
Thank you Gerald!
Great video. I will do a lot more thinking about my lie and stance going forward.
Great lesson! I've always had trouble with up and down hill slopes. This makes so much sense on how to adjust your body and swing. Even going up and down on the clubs makes so much sense! Something I've never thought to do depending on the situation!
Thank you Rev 😁
Thanks! I took notes!
@milenadeltorto7158 you are very welcome. That’s great 🙏🏻
Great concise, clear and full of useful information.Thank you so much for this great lesson Danny!
Happy to help Aluis 😁
Oh my word got an albatross today on par 5..watched the video ...helped enourmously..only took golf up 7 months ago..Brilliant..
Brilliant Jason well done 🙌
Great video...thanks DM
Pleasure Mike
Great video ! Surprised ya didn’t mention how the ball tend to fade right when below your feet and just the opposite when ball is above
Excellent video as always Coach Maude! I tune-in to get my weekly reminders and things I should practice at the range. Of course, there’s nothing like course play where we will actually run into these situations.
At 6:25 (ball above feet), and 7:42 (ball below feet); I think it’s important to understand shot shape as you did for uphill and downhill lies. When a ball is above our feet, the shot shape will tend to go right to left and we should aim just a little right of the target. The opposite occurs when the ball is below our feet and in that case we should aim just a little left… correct?
So many lessons are on mats or flat California grass. This is real golf. A great lesson.
Thank you Mark, happy to help!
Well done video, Danny.
Thank you 😁
Really surprising how everything you said makes so much sense but I’ve never been able to figure it out myself. Would’ve love to have tried this out this weekend but sadly my clubs were all stolen this week :( I’ll get back out eventually 😅
@@aFERALPLATYPUS that’s really sad to hear
I always thought you move the ball back in your stance when you go up in loft like a 9 iron or lower. I put my 7 iron or higher center to forward, it maybe a club width of my inside lead foot, i never have checked. Always enjoy your lessons they have help my game. Thank you.
Great advice DM. 👍
Thanks Graham 🙏👍
Great lesson Danny, might I add that side hill lies tend to fade when below your feet, draw when above.
Finally! A decent up/down slope video that I can actually understand.. nice one danny ❤
Thanks Jack, happy to help 👍
@DanielMaude you've certainly saved me money on the golf lessons, keep up the good work mate 👍
That is great advice. I never thought about changing my club selection for up hill or down hill lies and it really makes sense.
Thanks Michael, happy to help 😁
Very helpful video! I've been watching your videos for a few months, and I'm now able to hit my drive straighter at least 16 out of 18 holes. I can get out of the bunkers in one go. And this video today will definitely help with the down hill and/or uphill lies. Lastly, I've gotten my handicap down 3 points too. Thank you!
Brilliant Carol, well done 🙌
Great stuff once again, Danny. I've never heard or seen this training for these ball situations by any other sources. Your examples are realistic and happen on every round numerous times.
Keep them coming.
May God bless.
@earlterhun5528 thank you so much. Glad you enjoyed it. Enjoy 👍🏻
Super helpful; thank you!
Thank you 😁
Very informative
Glad it was helpful!
Trying to have our UK away day 2025 by you, for the simple selfish reason that it might make a personal lesson with you possible 😊 (I’m in the States). Thanks as always Danny! Been working on Woods this week too, slope is next wrinkle to work on.
Have fun 😁
great video ❤
Glad you liked it!!
More great tips Danny. Thanks. 😃
Thanks Kate 😁
Hey Danny, when you grip down on the club because the ball is higher than your feet, would you not also consider clubbing up to counter the loss of distance? Meaning, since you clubbed down to a 9 iron because of the sideways tilt, wouldn't you go BACK to an 8 iron since you had to grip down the shaft to offset the ball being above your feet?
@@Parrott65 absolutely, I would also club up on most side slopes just so I can swing easy
Excellent video Danny. Really clear - thanks
@davidwalters313 thank you so much. Glad you enjoyed my video 🙏🏻
Hello, thank you danny ! I enjoy this game
Me too Steph
@stephruben880 you are most welcome. Glad you enjoyed it 🙏🏻
Really great content, thanks. In the last scenario ball below the feet, my ball often goes off right when I’m 100 yards from green despite aiming left. Should I think of hitting the outside of the ball please to make sure I come through better and not taper off?
The more loft you have on the club the more you have to adjust your alignment
I went out and put this into practice and can’t believe how well I hit shots above and below stance 😮thank you! Weirdly I hit them better than I hit off flat lies. Could that be because I need to alter my grip height?
Great video Danny! I have one question with regard to the "Club Aiming Line" of the swing. Would the swing line change either to the Left or right of the actual aim line, depending on the slope ( up slope vs down slope)?? Your comments on the same will be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Hi Danny, great simple video as always. If ball is above your feet for right handed would you not aim right of target as well and left of target if it’s below your feet, thanks Rob
Absolutely, how much would depend on the loft of the club and severity of the slope. The more loft the more right or left you would aim
Danny excellent on course lesson! Thanks mate!
Happy to help Anthony 🙌
Very nice…… downhill with next club also lengthened the shaft by a little bit which aids in address
Thank you so much, Danny! This information is incredibly helpful. I really appreciate the great insights you’ve provided.
Thank you Kraiwin 👍
great video. my only question is if i have to aim further left/right if i stand up/down?
Thanks Danny, for another great lesson. Question: we've been told by other instructors that when the ball is below - or above - your feet, one needs to adjust the target line; that when below one's feet, for example, the ball will "curve"away (or downhill). Can you address that?
Thanks Danny always great lessons and explained simply but... now I'm confused. In several previous lessons you have us placing the ball back in our stance to compress the ball. Low point of the arc is actually below the lead armpit as I remember. Now the ball is aligned with the lead foot heel. Help! Thx.
Danny, great explanation! The question I have is when the ball is lying above or below your feet. I was always told ball above feet aim right of target and below your feet aim left of target. Is this a correct setup for target alignment on the slope?
Love these adjustments. I was wondering about the correct aiming or target line for these different types of shots. I noticed that you didn’t mention the target line. Did you just keep the normal target line or do you adjust your aiming point for these different lie angles?
What about alignment Danny? Ie. Tendency for ball to go right on downhill lies and opposite on uphill lies etc. Are you saying that these drills negate that problem?
I would say you are a 💯 correct and certainly worth experimenting. Do these steps initially and aim straight at your target and see what your tendency’s are
Love the content, and the information. I’m really trying t improve my golf game and get better. I’ve been playing golf for 4 years and this is my second year really taking it serious. I put a hitting net in my garage and purchased a mlm2pro to practice and really try and improve over the winter. I’m curious if you do virtual lessons. Really want to work on my game this off season.
Great lesson. Thanks DM
Happy to help Mike!
What about aiming a bit left with a downhill lie & right with a uphill lie, which always used to be the advice?
Absolutely David, the amount you do depend on the severity of the slope and the loft of your club. The greater the loft the more you need to shift your alignment
Hi Danny another great video but how do these shots differ if your off the fairway in the first cut where you can just see the top of the ball. Cheers Steve
Hi Danny, do you need to consider any change in distance or flight when choking down on the grip?
Nice stuff Danny so downhill lye still aim left uphill aim right still valid,
I would test it out as I don't see the up hill and downhill affecting starting line as much as ball above and ball below
@@DanielMaude yes well all yours were straight so will stick to your method
This helped me so much. Thanks alot 😁
Thank you 😁
Every tee box at my home course. Will get a lot of use from this one.
@Anthony-kh9oo glad you enjoyed my video. Thanks for watching. Enjoy practicing 🙏🏻
Wonderful guide to managing strikes on the fairway -- which is NEVER flat! Thanks Danny!
@wraithconscience thank you so much for watching. Glad you enjoyed it 🙏🏻
Question. I forward press by irons to compress. The angle is dependent via a connection of club butt to my front pocket and the other point on the angle is where the ball position is square to the face. Eg. Nine iron has more forward press..6 iron less. How do we adjust given the above video for slopes.
As always great tips - thank you
Thank you Iko 😁
How about the aiming direction of uphill and downhill slope pls?
As usual danny fantastic info for us all although if you think about it, it all does seem common sense but sadly not when you on the golf course does it ??
Thank you, have been looking for ways to handle these sort of lies. Will take some time to remember everything when on the course! Btw: maybe you can also make a lesson on real steep up- and downhill situations? Not many of that to practise here in the Netherlands so I really felt helpless when playing corses in NZ with enormous slope rates ...
I think he's a wizard! Every time I'm struggling he seems to put out the video to help. I recommend you to EVERYONE I meet that could use some coaching. A: Keeps me from having to do it lol B: I know they're in good hands if they just do the work! Another great video!
@majen66 thank you. Really appreciate. Glad my videos help you 🙏🏻
Great video.. Thank you.
@ralphstaiano2718 thank you. You are most welcome 🙏🏻
