  • One Of The Last Triple Crown Road Railer Trains Slams The Railroad Diamond In Logansport, Indiana! Train With Heritage Unit DPU Hits The Diamond. Fast Train Knocks Down The Signal & Gets A Speed Check With My Radar Unit. 4 Norfolk Southern Trains & Small Town Fire Department.
    I was told that the Norfolk Southern Triple Crown Road Railers would finally cease operation at the end of this week so I went to Indiana to catch one of the final ones. I went on Thursday but was unable to get any that day so I got a motel and tried for Friday. On Friday I got a Road Railer train ( 255 ) hitting the railroad diamond in Logansport, Indiana. Listen to the awesome sounds of the train hitting the diamond on its run from Detroit to Kansas City. I also got another westbound train at the diamond there. This is an awesome long train with a Norfolk Southern Heritage Unit as a mid train DPU. That was a lucky catch.
    After these two trains we see a couple more trains at a small town between Logansport and LaFayette, Indiana. These trains are on the same NS line. I saw this town on the map and thought it looked interesting. The trains absolutely fly through here! The town also has a small fire station that faces the railroad crossing. After the first train went booking through I decided to use my radar gizmo on the second one. Look how fast that train was going! I also got it knocking down the signal. That is railroad jargon for causing the signal to drop from green to red as the train passes. I used 160.860 and 452.9375 to monitor the trains.
    I also decided to spend another night in Indiana so that I could go to Wabash and Warsaw. On Saturday I got some street running trains in Warsaw on the Norfolk Southern Marion Sub. I will get that video out soon.
    Don't miss the Live Action Pets and the slide show that comes from the video.
    Filmed Friday, August 23, 2024 in 1080p with 60fps. Thanks for watching!

    How come they are stopping the road rail trains, they seem like a good idea to me?

    • @beeble2003
      @beeble2003 19 дней назад +23

      Because they're not a good idea, after all. The trailers have to be strengthened a lot to allow them to be coupled together like that. That adds a lot of weight to the trailer, which means they can carry less load, because trucks have a maximum allowed weight on the road. Despite the extra strengthening, the trailers still aren't strong enough to go with other cars, so they have to be in dedicated trains. Because of the way they're connected together, those trains can't be switched, so you have to take all your trailers from one start point to one destination. That basically kills all the possible advantages. Ultimately, they're just a worse version of containers or TOFC.

      @@JawTooth looked it up. Apparently they reckon it's because the road rail fleet has reached end of life. They are switching to double stickers citing economics. Doesn't really make sense to me as the cost of new yards, infrastructure and running costs don't seem to stack up. They must know their business I would assume.

    I remember when the Roadrailer concept first came out and the truckers didn't like it because each trailer had its' own set of rail wheels with a heavier trailer frame which increased the tare weight and ate into the weight you could actually carry. Roadrailer II was supposed to correct that by having removable rail wheels but then you had the issue of getting the wheelsets back to the shipping point plus the time to set the trailers back on the wheels and the railroads didn't like the wasted time. The idea should have died out years ago. I certainly won't miss it.

    Even at the end the Roadrailer still looked sharp. When the Ford plant was still in operation to St Paul MN the roadrailer ran at capacity but later there was not enough traffic to replace it. Nice to see the VGN unit and no weird gestures from an unhappy TP&W crew. Plenty of other good fast moving NS trains out in the farm fields and through the small towns. Looking at what's left of it and then the map of the town showing how the main Highway goes around it now rather than through it's pretty much in that downhill spiral. There probably aren't that many younger children in the area and they leave for better job opportunities and social life. A very nice broadside of the NS unit with the grain elevator the biggest structure for miles around. You sure have that wistful look as I think you wanted to hear the siren operate. Still young at heart

    WOW! I remember when we (NS) began that service. I’ve been retired over 24 years now. Think about how many trailers are being pulled by 1 locomotive ( 1 engineer/driver)!!! A real savings of wear and tear on the highways.

    For those of you who like interurbans see this article about the interurbans going through Rockfield www.carrollcountycomet.com/articles/looking-back-847/ - the interurbans used to stop in front of the site now occupied by the fire station. This was an interurban between Ft Wayne and Lafayette, IN. Cheers Mr and Mrs Jaw Tooth!

    55 mph. That was warp 15. Lol it seem like it was going faster then that. That train was moving. Good video especially info on that small town! I always said out in these remote area where there are barely and crossing and towns trains go thru, they be moving.

      Thanks 👍. I love visiting small towns. They are peaceful and there is usually easy parking. I went to a bigger city nearby called Lafayette and got a parking ticket on Thursday for being 20 minutes over the 2 hour limit. I prefer the smaller towns
