      Don't know about that, because Townsend thought Brian Wilson was an amazing producer and composer. Only those two were expanding the boundaries of the pop song ("A Quick One", "Good Vibrations").

      but barbara ann is not beach boys song

    • @mickdeleon5072
      @mickdeleon5072 8 лет назад +9

      You're partially right, Carlos. It's a doo-wop song from around 1960. Jan & Dean covered it, yet The Beach Boys had a big hit with it (#1 throughout Scandanavia #2 in the US, #3 in the UK). Since their version was more popular than the original, people consider it a Beach Boys song.

    Sometimes you need to appreciate a thing for what it is: they are singing and playing for their own pleasure not ours, we are lucky to see incredible artists in their own right, having fun with an unpolished performance, humanizing them and making them more accessible to us.

    First thing you realize is how great the Beach Boys really are, often considered light weight music. Nothing could be further from the truth.
    This is a great video because it shows you how great the Who were and how difficult the Beach Boys craft was at the same time.

  • @bretbailey1116
    @bretbailey1116 9 лет назад +64

    I had heard that The Who did this song when they were getting ready to record Who Are You. Moon was in bad enough shape that they came to rehearsals and decided to play this song. One reason was Moon was a HUGE Beach Boys fan. The other reason was to get things going again in the studio. As you can see, Keith Moon absolutely ate this up. And even when THIS lineup of The Who was just screwing around, they still kicked ass!! Such a tragedy that Keith Moon couldn't get his alcoholism in line. Such a phenomenal drummer. RIP Keith!!

      When they were making "The Kids Are Alright," they asked Jeff Stein to pick a song, any song, that he'd like to hear them play. Here's the result, although they had recorded "Barbara Ann" some years before when Keith was much healthier and better with the vocals.

      +Marty McDaniel The Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys did NOT write it either. It was this Italian American doo wop group from da Bronx called the Regents who wrote it performed it and had a hit record with it 3 years before the Beach Boys although the Beach Boys version was way superior the Regents version was pretty good doo wop especially with the evocative saxes on the record.

    The Who were the beginning of an era where the band did the recordings and played live, The Beach Boys were strictly a live band, their recordings were arranged by Brian Wilson and recorded by the Wrecking Crew. The Who broke some serious ground and had fun doing it. Love this.

      All of the Beach Boys played their instruments on all of their studio recordings for albums and singles through The Beach Boys Today album. On Pet Sounds, Brian Wilson played bass, organ, & piano, Carl Wilson played lead guitar & over dubbed 12 string, and Dennis Wilson played drums. Session players were also used on this album, and for all albums going forward from Pet Sounds.
