Think of the age of the recording - standards were not quite as exacting then. Just look at Nikolaus Harnoncourts face - must have been at least 30 years ago. The orchestra is probably the Concentus Musicus Wien.

Habe ja nicht viel zu sagen, habe dieses Lied vor 2Jahren an Weihnachten auch gesungen, war `ne Katastrophe...Wollte die Arie singen obwohl meine Gesangslehrerin nicht dafür war. Naja, auf diese Weihnachten wollen wir die Arie wieder anschauen...:-)

Reverberating acoustics make his phrases smear/lack snappy tightness "Wie wenig" is overdone, so emphasis on "wenig" is backwards. 2:48 scoops a bit on "geboren werden". Uneven phrasing at 3:55 on strong syllable of "Achtest". Natural speech emphasis loses out at times. 6:15 "alten Krippen" a bit unequally phrased. The "smiling" mask on "erhält" good! Recit. "Herberge" vs Holl's idea of elocution make Schreier look great! Holl is powerful, rich baritone.
Ya, ach Henschel kann nicht so gut auf die Deutsche sprache sprechen/singen. Although a native, Henschel miss-pronounces a lot of his German. This happens a lot with native English singers too-notice Henschel's "schlafEN." The "'en' is not right, but this fellow does it properly. Both versions are just wonderful in their own right. Gardiner and Harnoncourt are both great; I prefer Harnoncourt because of his understanding of speech being the foundation of music. That's just me though...
