As a 40-yr-old man with a varied background in different industries, I can confirm that Ethan’s advice is gold.
    Employers want exactly three things:
    1. Skills, your ability to produce good work.
    2. Teamwork, your ability to fit your work into a team effort.
    3. Reliability, your ability to do the above two points on time, every time.
Nail those three things and you’re hired.

Great video!! As an individual in the industry for over 15 years, the advice you dropped is 100% truth. I can’t stand these young artists complaining about how they didn’t get what they want.. you need to earn the respect of others and prove your skills and have a good attitude. To many of these individuals think their good when they got a lot of room to grow , improve.. there’s always someone better than you at what you do.. so don’t let your ego control your mouth.
I was taught by Art Center alumni and directly from some of the founders of Pixar.. my advice is learn as much about what art you’re hoping to create and more. Don’t just learn to draw, understand the newest software used in animation to editing, 3D modeling , illustration.. understanding the other components of a project will give you better insight into limitations or what can be pushed to the limits.

"you need to earn the respect of others". I think that's where the heart of the matter is. You might need to earn respect *as a professional*, prove that you're hardworking and skilled enough to be in the position you're in/want to be.
But *as a person*, you DO NOT need to earn the respect of others. Dignity is inherent to every human, and everyone is deserving of respect.
I think that's the point that 98% of the people on this comment section and Ethan are missing and is really important to be clear about, and the reason why, when you comment negatively on her because you think she's demanding a level of professional respect she might have not earned yet, when she's clearly describing situations in which she wasn't respected *as a person*, you're making more harm than anything else.
I hate to benefit this video's algorithm after all this months by leaving comments, but this needs to be stated.

    • @thisbridgehascables
      @thisbridgehascables 3 года назад +55

@@tarticant3097 Yes, but her attitude was very ego driven. She came out of college/art school believing she was ‘good’ or ‘great’.. that is her own perception and can be rather false when compared to other artist of her age group.
Also she framed her attitude going into the interview as being , ‘they need me, I don’t need them..’ - that is the worst perspective to go in with into the interview. I’ve conducted interviews to hire top designers to work on big projects.. or even trained individuals at Disney, Universal, etc You need to be humble not self absorbed.
Yes, maybe they didn’t give her respect, yet you’re going to meet individuals whom will be cold until they see what you can do. Some of these people have seen many artists come and go, and just maybe don’t like getting to friendly until they know your willing to stay and really want to be part of the group.
Also she acted like they should make her an art director or give her a show to control.. sorry but she doesn’t seem to have the right mindset to be in charge.. she basically was acting just as those she was complaining about.
My career in art/design/development started when i was 15 and now i’m over 40. You have to be patient with being given advancements or the opportunity to earn an art director position.
Also you must learn your own limitations and that sometimes you might need to seek out help from better artists to complete large or even small projects..
Never believe you can or should do everything.. its good to learn a lot of things but don’t expect to be the best.

Agreed. A high self-esteem is great, but I think that "I don't care, I'm too much for you" attitude when you are just one among a bunch of other young artists working there is just taking that to negative levels.

Dude, she started some drama for bumping up her views etc on her social media platforms. She claimed an artist by the name of Lord Gris, copied her. The pictures were someone at 3/4 face angle, red skinned demon girl (was literally the skin color she got mad about) and then a theme relating to bees and honey (artworks were still each their own deal though). It's sad she dropped down to that and her replies to her own fans who looked into it and are telling her she's wrong, have been called brainless, insulting her and blind supporters. By her. Someone they supported. Also she seriously isn't joking, she's serious the other artist copied her.

    • @blobbu6016
      @blobbu6016 4 года назад +35

Not to mention the honey girl are both totally different art. Its just a theme on honey girls, same as the one with the candy girl, they are both different with the same theme. The red demon girl was honestly ridiculous, there are tons of red demon girls drawn very similar to hers, and Gris's was just a red girl with the same eye colour and a bunch of hands on her head. Her red girl isn't even a demon girl, it's just because the colour red. She could hv handle it better like dm Gris etc.

For someone who hated Disney for being all about money making, her RUclips ambitions are exclusively money focused, its clear as day. Her personality is just plain awful so it’s no wonder she isn’t growing as a channel, acting entitled and money hungry just don’t attract an audience. She was naive to think a clickbaity/viral “why I left my job at Disney” video was enough to launch a RUclips career, you have to be likeable.

Artist Nathan Fowkes has one of my favorite animation industry stories. This happened when he was a concept artist for the Prince of Egypt epic, and totally new in his career. One of his bosses gave him the job to create the color for the coronation feast. Not long after given the task, Fowkes hears a conversation from an office along the lines of "How dare you give a new guy such an important job for an important scene." Fowkes realized his and his boss' job was on the line. In a few days he makes HUNDREDS (he showed them in a slideshow, it was hundreds) of color concept paintings for the scene. He could've buckled at the weight of responsibility or bad vibes, but Fowkes stood up to the task. To this day, Fowkes is renound for his use of color.

Asians aren't really considered one of the minorities in America, mostly due to the high influx of wealthy Chinese coming into America. You see due to the one-child policy (which I believe was recently changed to 2 children) it was in Chinese culture to basically invest everything into that one child. Which means the very best education (which is where the tiger parents stereotype comes from) Chinese parents often send their children to American colleges for good education causing the college percentages to have a disproportionally high Asian population. They actually will reject very good college applications/resumes just because you are Asian and Asians are held to a much higher standard for the sake of "diversity" on the college campus. @makeshiftmasquerade 3 года назад +157

This whole video makes me feel… odd.
As an autistic person, I was always this strange combination of naive and humbled. I was always sent mixed messages like “Your disability shouldn’t define you! Work harder and people will notice!” and “You aren’t entitled to anything in this life! Don’t expect the world to be handed to you just because you’re autistic!” I don’t assume people have bad intentions, and take everything to heart because if it wasn’t true why would they tell me that?
Art was never something I felt too much of a need to compete in. For me it was all about communicating my ideas. I never felt like I was ever going to be the next big artist, and always thought that would be way too much attention for me to handle. I didn’t ever want to be in the spotlight because I was so used to getting criticized abandoned rejected and demeaned for existing at all.
So when I worked so hard I neglected my overall health, then still came up short… It wasn’t that I was upset because I expected people to pity me enough to let me “win” if I cried or had a meltdown, yet the tears and internal shame still showed itself. Some classmates in my art class assumed I was doing it for some manipulative reason I think. They must’ve thought me being frustrated meant I felt entitled to being the best.
When I didn’t get into the graphic design program, I realized that after an entire life of working hard to please and be tolerated by other people, that whole idea that I’d be able to get anywhere if I just kept my head down and did my best was a lie.
I realized there were some things I couldn’t control, that were unfair, and that maybe it would be better for me if I just got out of that competitive space. My mother said I “wasn’t able to cope with competition” but that’s not it at all. I can acknowledge when I’ve lost a game or done worse than someone at something.
I am so aware of my flaws it’s almost a fault. I’ve just been berated for those little things so often in the past and had them used as reasons to hurt or exclude me in some situations…Then in the same breath I was told good hard work and a positive attitude would fix them and if I just did more, I could be accepted into society and not seen as a burden. I clung to that hope and that made rejection and criticism really painful, because I equated it with more evidence I didn’t deserve to exist.
I don’t know if that’s even remotely comparable to what this disney employee went through, but in a way, I learned the same lesson about hard work and it not inherently getting me anywhere. I realized despite what everyone said, my disability does define my capabilities to an extent, and to stay healthy I need to accept my limitations and let them define me so I can live life to the fullest. It’s still hard for me to accept that though, because the world we live in withholds food water and shelter from people they deem to “not be working hard enough”.
I am still terrified of being an adult because I feel like the moment I become vulnerable I will be hurt or taken advantage of by someone looking to prey on the weak, and it’s not like my openness to change every fiber of my being to avoid this outcome can fix everything people find problems in about me. So I am left with the question how do I convince people I deserve to take up space when I can’t as easily “pull myself up by my bootstraps”?
If anyone has an answer I’d be happy to hear it.

    • @nattifrutti

You sound like an amazing person to me personally. When I read your words, I become happy and reassured, because I see and hear what I think is missing in today's generation, and especially online: understanding, empathy, patience and love.
I feel like most people who watched this girl don't try to understand it from her perspective, but rather just judges it from their own and their own experiences without taking the time to take a step back and not include their own life and thought processes. It's impossible for us to understand and judge her experience, because we weren't there. We don't have enough information to be able to criticise or even make a comment at all.
Though I do understand her worries and feelings about her situation. And looking from her perspective, it's fully understandable that she would have the feelings that she has. As she said: It just wasn't for HER. But... That opinion seems to rub many people the wrong way... Maybe because they feel like it contradicts their own, maybe because they feel like it challenges their reality, experience and perception on how the industry works and has worked for them... As if 2 separate experiences and opinions can't exist in the same space.. I don't know. But it doesn't seem very empathetic or understanding.
And most people are telling her that she needs to fix something. They project their own thoughts of what her words meant and who she is without even getting to know her. Like this guy here: from just small 2 videoclips he "guesses" (his own words) her life and upbringing, and then makes his opinions and conclusions based on just that. - which seems very unprofessional and doesn't take into account the lack of information and understanding of her situation etc. (it's not like he interviewed her and wanted to and tried to understand her. He just wanted to comment based on his own perception of things and the things she said.)
Also, there is nothing wrong with you. You sound like an already perfect person. And somebody who has a lot more empathy than everyone I've read in this comment section so far. I think you Re absolutely right about being able to accept our shortcomings to be able to work on them. Only then can we heal and find ways to work around the hinderings that are in our path. It also is a part of getting to know yourself and how you work best. I have a lot of shortcomings that hinder me in a lot of cases, but they are also a gift in other scenarios. But by being aware of their downsides and how to manage them, I can help myself in the situations where it can cause more problems for me. (that does not mean that they are bad, though. Some things are positive in some aspects and negative in others. Nothing is black and white. Things are more nuanced like that.)
      Also,
The sentiment you're describing sounds very much like an American thing (I don't know if you're from America though): this thing where you need to work hard to be deserving of things, and only your hard work will give you anything. - > "You are not deserving of anything if you don't put in the hard work, and if you fail, that is utterly your fault. No limitation can hinder you. If you're poor, that's your fault, you ended up there, you didn't work hard enough to get out of it." etc.... I'm glad I didn't grow up in a country or community with such sentiments...
But, that's just my 2 cents. I might have misunderstood your comment. I hope this gave somewhat of a different perspective on things. :)
Good luck to you~~ and again, you already sound like a great person to me :) (when I read your comment, I thought: "this is a person I would like to be friends with, they sound nice!")
You don't need to change anything or "every fiber" to fit any standard. You are already perfect as you are, to me :)

When you get your job, first day of work can feel intimidating. Just keep your head straight. Just remember you are a rookie, and rookie job is to listen and learn. Being positive is okay, but not being too friendly and buddy buddy. You need to accustom with the working place and people will accustom to you. In due time you will have friend and trust from people.
This is what I feel what Janet Chan flaw is, because I've seen similar case. People like her ended up being drained on their own. That being said, it is good for her to venture out on her own. She can do what she wants. You can do the same too, but what you want right now is experience and knowledge, which you can get by working in the industry. Disney makes it very clear that they are a corporation. Previous CEOs made many statements about that. It wasn't like they were hiding the fact that they aren't some freelance company where employees can make whatever they want whenever they want. Of COURSE it's all about making money, these studios spend many millions to produce quality feature animations and there is no possible way they are going to simply hand over the control to someone who isn't established. Even if your the upmost incredible artist who's a hundred times more "creative" than the art director it just doesn't matter. The reality of the situation is that the studios will want someone who they believe will be the safest bet, who is most likely to not only get a return on investment but turn a profit. That type of thing really only comes with experience. You can't expect a mega corporation like Disney to invest fifty million in your first project with no corporate real experience, that would literally be crazy.
Anyways, her part about trying to shake the ladies hand made me cringe. The way it sounded to me was the lady was having a conversation with someone and she interrupted it. "You have to play the game to play the game."
Janet decided that "the game" wasn't for her (and it isn't for many artists' personalities), and she made a decision to go her own way. Ethan also said that she would need to play the game to be at the top and hand off ridiculous notes to her underlings. I think one of the points about Janet leaving this corporate job is so that she won't need to perpetuate this vicious cycle, and perhaps try to create a company culture of her own, with different priorities. Perhaps it will or won't be as commercially successful as these other corporate media companies. However, she'll get to do things her way, and for many artists, that is kind of the point: Being able to make one's own decisions about art or work is one of the tradeoffs of being artist. A lot of times we will make less money doing that, but we already know this. I think Janet figured this out while she's relatively young, which is a good thing.
There are people who would excel in this corporate environment, and Janet realized that she isn't one of them, and that's a good thing.

Janet: *realizes it is what it is*
Also Janet: *switches to a different “it”*
I find the people calling her entitled and naiive to be disrespectful. People who have lost the ability to see reality for what it could be, and acknowledge their relationship to the world around them are not great people to be around. It’s like people who mock children for having dreams, or reinforce the messed up things about the world instead of fixing it to gain a sense of power over it.

  • @Fairygoblet

I've just got to make a point here. One of the reasons I knew that there was a hierarchy in the animation industry was the movie credits. You would see a name barely mentioned at the very bottom where it's really hard to see climb slowly up to the top. They put the most important people first so you can track names at the bottom and watch their progress.
Sometimes it may take years for them to get a senior position but you still see their names movie after movie. It's not as though progress doesn't happen. It just didn't quite happen quickly enough for this girl. It still surprises me that she thinks they would trust a newbie with their multi-million dollar project.
I agree that Disney is getting stale, but that's not how you let in new blood. They let in new blood by saying,"hey, this person did a good job on this basic work. Let's go to them and see if they can offer something even better".
I don't know if I personally would want to work in an environment like disney. I don't do well in situations that require me to do fast, high pressure work. But if I felt comfortable with this and wanted to do animation work in that context, you bet I would be excited to get them their coffee and grateful to be there.
I would do everything to the best of my ability with a smile on my face, because every task would be an opportunity to learn and have a working relationship with these people. And at night, I would dream about my name being at the top of the credits.
Of course, this isn't an ideal world where I was suited for this kind of work. It may just be that she has trouble with hierarchy and feeling included, and that's okay. She could probably stand to learn more about being professional but there's nothing wrong with her going more solo if she doesn't feel suited to this kind of work.

Seems like she just wants to gain clout from doing stuff like this. I’m not saying there aren’t issues with the creative industry, but she seems so entitled. Art like anything else is hard work. It’s also silly to think you have to spend a lot to get anywhere. I went to a community college and transferred to get my BFA. I have the same mindset as you, Ethan. I grew up in a low income, rural town, I worked multiple jobs while I was in college and had to bust my ass to be where I am now. I’m not some famous big artist, but I didn’t want to be like those around me. I didn’t want to be stuck in factory or retail work the rest of my life, and my creative endeavors are the only thing I knew I wanted to focus on. There’s tons of artists that come from areas where there are no art schools or no creative careers and yet they make something of themselves. You can literally have nothing and make something out of it. That’s what makes us creative, we adapt, we change and we use what’s around us, but going into an art field is a grind. The “playing hard to get” / “don’t care” attitude is stupid. Why do people expect other people to like them, if they act like they don’t care about them at all? I mean, if someone acts like they don’t care about me, I’m not going to care about you, because you didn’t care about me in the first place 🤷🏻‍♀️ geez, do we really have to explain that?

    • @philipooi94

Well yeah the basis of playing hard to get is knowing that you yourself is worth “getting”. Like how a hot girl can play hard to get, but a ugly one can’t. Sounds to me like she was playing hard to get and everyone else didn’t think her skills were actually up to snuff

    • @alphaxneo
      @alphaxneo 4 года назад +20

Half the time (or probably more), a person playing "hard to get" is not actually hard to get. They just don't want to date you and people just tell themselves "oh, they're playing hard to get!" to feel entitled to pester that person again and again and again when they just don't want to have anything to do with you. Then there's those who play hard to get for real and are surprised that the other person doesn't come back... it's never a good strategy.

Love this sentiment from Ethan (paraphrased a bit): "A lot of kids and students are naive. Not due to lack of experience of skills, but lack of experience in life's situations. Not being raised in money, I understood as a baseline of my life that I had to take my external expectations, the expectations of the world (expecting the world to hand feed me everything) and bring them down, and take them as internal expectations that if anything's getting done, it's by me. Nobody else is gonna do it. Nobody's ever done it in my life. It's on me baby. Ain't no money doing that, ain't no parents doing that. It's me.
I'm talking about getting what you want, I'm talking about working your way up... Get on that level. Other people out there may not have been given the tools, the resources to think in this way. This is handling constant destroyed expectations. Constant rejections, constant negativity. And I gotta say, for some people... this is their everyday. It's not something new. You haven't found anything new, it's just new to you."

When in times like these, I always think back the journey of the legendary Japanese animation director Hayao Miyazaki and how he came to be. (you can correct me if I'm wrong on this one). The guy didn't started out in an animation school hell not even an Japanese equivalent of an art school, he came from a law school background. Ones he get to the animation industry, he didn't start out making his own animation, he was an In-betweener. The most disposable, grulling, and unforgivable job in the animation industry. Sure, you heard about the people who make amazing key frame and composition, but tell me 1 in-betweener from the top of your head you can think of that reach world fame. That's what I thought.
The guy GRINDS his way to the top while having a grafic novel on the side called "naseka and the valley of the wind" (with he later adapted in to a movie). The first movie he directed was an astablis franchise and you can imaged how much creativity control you have on that.
All and all, she seems like someone who didn't do enough research. She expected to be handed down a position of creativity director just because her art looks good (maybe if she has build her animation portfolio in her college day, maybe she'll have an easier time) but I digress. I wish her the best of luck on her journey.

I think it's a fairly good point except that you can not take into considerations that Miyazaki started in a different era with way less competition than today (not saying that he didn't deserve the success that he got). My dad started his career in advertising working at a radio when he was only a teen( he was 14 when they hired him as an apprentice) and he became a speaker in just a few years. Now getting such job would take 5 times more effort, money and education just to stand out from the crowd.

Some of her points I've taken. Quite true! Learning Art does cost a lot money. And It is true or not depending how good and patient you are with it. For example, a person who pays only $1500 for a 3 months course to study digital painting and art foundation comparing to a person full pay $15000-35000/years to go Art Univeristy, the $1500 guy's portfolio is still better than the college guy's. Why? Because he only focuses on practicing in that 3 months. And college guy are distracted you from it by forcing you taking electives, but most good art college students are not affected by this distraction but its like 70% number of students in a class will be. And again, study hard, good relationship with colleagues, patience & passion, and practice will cost you less-ish money.
She is right only that point though, what she said the rest are quite ridiculous.

i think everyone who comes into this industry has a romanticized outlook on it when they first start. I blame those DISNEY BEHIND THE SCENE videos from the old VHS time. In all you learn that you are making something for a company. You are there to help them realize this show/movie, and not to make your own personal projects. I am a firm believer that artist should do their own thing, but when it comes to clients realize that you are helping with a directors vision, not your own. I appreciate your attitude about this. I know a few people in the industry who just shut her down, and act like she should just shut up but that's not how you treat people. We are allowed to feel what we feel, but we need to smart about the consequences. The renaissance of Disney came from that youthful mentality of wanting to do better and old guys saying shut up and just work. so she shouldn't stop doing that. Just be a little more political.

I’ve only worked with Indy companies myself so I can’t speak much. What you say I honestly agree with, but creatives should also research market value for the work they do so they can bargain.
