Very informative, thank you so much! I'm working towards a position at either Disney or Dreamworks as a story artist. Not being able to go to an art school may have its drawbacks, but I'm motivated! This gave me some much-needed reassurance! Thanks again!
I’m in a career change from comics to storyboarding. It’s scary (what if it doesn’t happen), but also exciting (a new direction). Good luck with your new projects!
Thx bro..why just now I find the best YT channel for give me a lesson, inspiration and everything I need to make me grow up for being good animator..? You give me a lot..
I don’t think i can do it, I have no direction, no money, I didn’t go to school, and my best has yet to ever be enough. I feel I have done all I can alone, but I have no connections or family to help. I just don’t think I can do it anymore I have my everything for years and now I don’t have anything left.
Hey! I recommend checking out the comic "I moved to LA to work in animation". The author talks about how she got into the industry on her own. She did not go to an art school for animation, but she did had experience working in comics. I really recommend it! She has a lot of tips about a lot of practices she did to create a story portfolio.
Well, let me just tell you that I really like all the stuff I found on your Ko-Fi and I think you are a great artist! Your output seems pretty high, and I'm 100% sure that you could make it, if you keep it up! I hope today you already feel better than last week, and if you don't then i'll be here to talk to you :) I got VERY lucky to get accepted to some great european school, but I definitely know your struggle. Don't let these lows bring you down, you rule!
I am in the same boat. Working on a studio has always been my dream but I am introverted and connections are hard. And even tho I did go to a nice animation school, I am so tired and have no friends or family in the industry to help me get my foot in the door.
What was the process like leaving and coming back to Dreamworks several times? How did you explain your reasoning for leaving and did you have to wait for a new “artist wanted” add to be released before returning?
Toniko, really admire your initiative for still being grateful with your experience at a major studio, you make a decision to a way of creating your own vision. Thats guts! Here in Brazil, I'm striving for this path too.
Finally now, one can make an animated short without needed a ton of cash or a lifetime of drawing on the 2 for seemingly forever. I do everything, script to concept drawing to 3D modelling. I feel like the guy with a one man band with a drum on his back and cymbal between his legs but it is fun.
Hey Toniko! Been watching you sky rocket since Sheridan. You're always impressing me! Looks like I made it into the video 😂 I enjoyed the thoughtful and open style of your video. Keep up the great work, looking forward to what else you bring us. 😜
Thank you for sharing your story about how you got into DreamWorks. It's really cool. I doubt you'll see this, but I wanted to ask this. Regardless if someone went to an art/film college or not, would you say anyone can get a storyboarding job at some a studio like dreamworks as long as they had the drive, skill, and capability?
do you have animation demos made with opentoonz? I want to see what type of animations you can get out of it when fully used! and if what you teach can actually be done in it! the draw back of your lesson packages is that you should use open source software so that everyone can do it! i feel right about spending money if i can't get the lessons in full! even thought you say you can transfer the files to other programs! that just sounds like extra work.
Amazing story! I have a question as a foreigner from the Balkans do dreamworks accept outside US people, and if they accept, will they give you working visa or any pass to the state? Thank you!
They accept anyone inside and outside US. Most of their employees are asian. Some work remotely. My finnish friend who moved to work in US (NY) in needed labor certification from the workplace before he got working visa. www.myvisajobs.com/Visa-Sponsor/Dreamworks-Animation/162158.htm
is it difficult to be accepted if you're not a Calarts Alum? even if your skills are at par with anyone from that school?. I've noticed most ppl at pixar that are Calarts alum didn't have much in their portfolio before entering the studio. Ronnie Del Carmen has worked his ass off since Widget the World watcher before he got accepted in the studio. I wonder how many non-Calarts ppl were accepted in that trainee program
How much money did you earn back then with that job? Does someone knows what is the lowest salary for an animator, technical animator or character designer? Thanks
I already have my own art production. Not interested in studios since they are too corrupt and controlled by cruel people and systems like Big Six Media. However, good job.
This has the cutest intro in all of RUclips

Andrew Demarest you should check out lulusketches. She never went to art schools and was a background painter for Disney!
Very interesting video, glad you got to share your thoughts on getting accepted by a pretty big animation studio!

I discovered your channel not long ago but I can see you came from a long way! All the best.

What tools does one need for such?

Thanks so much toniko love your videos
great story! any future plans to create a storyboard tutorial package to accompany your 2d animation training?
Just draw, loser. You don't need a tutorial

You're filipino right? If you are then I'm just like you :)
Minus the talent of course
The minute I realized it was you speaking, I sort of wanted to quit watching, I mean it’s Toniko, he can get any job 😂
....What are you doing now in 2024?
You are so talented, I wished you would find your own way instead of wasting your gift as a cog in a corporation. :)
