You have to convince yourself that you don't share the same deadlines or lifepath. And the funny part: Those people probably feel the same about themselves. So you might always have this feeling but don't let it become your entire personality.

@@enrique.urbina4824 The perfect example for artists behavior is the Capuchin monkeys experiment.
Both monkeys are the same and do identical work, both are given cucumber. One day one is given a strawberry while the other cucumber despite doing the same work still. The monkey that kept receiving the cucumber went into a fit of rage and threw the cucumber back because it felt it was unfair that both did the same work and the other monkey received better treats.
This is exactly what happens in the art world sometimes. You can put in a lot of effort, have a lot of knowledge put into your work and it can be outshined by someone who did none of above and instead make slow effort sketches and recieve a ton of publicity and a ton of customers and you get nothing.

I mean, why should that be untrue? It is a must to think that having standards of quality means that those that fall below it are just wasting time. As a novice I might not be that good before I die, should I be happy of where I am despite not liking stuff of that level? Should I lower my standards so much I should never, ever dislike anything?

*"Envy is the killer of Joy"*
I feel like this adequately sums up how I feel tbh. Just seeing someone better than you can demotivating, but seeing someone who is trying half as hard as you are be better in almost every way just shreds your confidence (especially if they're younger than you)
It festers, turns your passion and wonder at how they got so good into self-deprication, to vitriol, to genuine HATE.
It is a very dark, disgusting feeling that can bring out the worst in you and its not easy to deal with no matter who you are.

Since the recent success of the show "The Amazing Digital Circus", I've seen a lot of debates on this topic. Here's what I've learned:
    1) Art should no longer be seen as a race, but like hiking. Our highly competitive world often makes us forget this.
    2) We don't all start our artistic journey at the same time. Some are late bloomers, others started earlier.
    3) Let's imagine that we take our artistic journey in a symbolic car. Some cars are much heavily loaded than others. People with mental health or family problems may progress more slowly than others, but they shouldn't be ashamed or angry about it. They do the best they can with what they have.
    4) Comparison is really not a good idea because humans only compare themselves to others in terms of what they don't have. So if you compare yourself to a lot of people who have what you don't have in different domains, you're bound to feel insecure. The solution (even if it's easier said than done) is to be "inspired" by them. These persons succeeded where you've failed? Okay, how did they do it? Sincere and honest admiration is much healthier than jealousy.

Speaking of dealing with jealousy, I feel it deeply when it comes to being a small artist and animator on social media. I have been on RUclips and Instagram for years, post animation videos and illustrations consistently yet still remain nothing . I watched accounts become famous within a week, and it really makes me so mad. I tried so hard yet I didn't get what I deserve. I feel like the world doesn't care about what I do. But nevertheless, I will keep going.

Tbf, I’ve been dealing with this too lately. I’ve been drawing much less for the past 2.5 years out of 6 now(a lot of this has also been professional work like commissions) so I just kinda stick to simple drawings that make me feel nice…. But then I think back on how quickly I improved in my art, and I know I still got it in me to make actually good stuff, so I just feel really ashamed I can’t “keep up” like how I used to. Just don’t have the motivation, not even for “full” pieces anymore. I do rough sketches and stop there, which is also very unfulfilling to me… but I legit don’t have the energy and feel so annoyed when I see people younger than me doing way more😞

Really appreciate the video, it helps a lot.
Something that has helped me with jealousy and even impostor syndrome is to understand that everyone’s journey is different.
I’m in art school, and gosh there are people who DRAW AMAZING, meanwhile I don’t have that same level of skill (which stills makes me wonder why they accepted me, lol). During the finals of my first fourth month period I realized my jealousy wasn’t helping at all, because I couldn’t do projects without having in my mind that I will never have their skills, and that frustrated me because I was doing my best but wasn’t enough. Until I came to the conclusion of our personals journeys, school has been easier, not that much easier, but it has helped me to move on.

I have went through similar experiences. The moment when you see someone being loved by something you do as well while you are being ignored hurts so bad and it's the only way I've felt true jealousy, another thing is the fear of losing my friends from them finding other friends to hang out with ( I usually never fight for them though). I guess what one needs is to just say "it is what it is" and move on, still trying to get there

  • @hubbzjunkyard821
    @hubbzjunkyard821 6 месяцев назад +1

I used to be like this, but then I looked deeply into myself and the source of all these feelings and realized the source of it all: I didn't envy their skill, or their success, or how many followed them or who followed them. I envied their ability to connect to others better than me, people who admire you are people who will be there for you. At your disposal. Being an artist is often a lonely, isolated endeavor and knowing someone looks like they're cruising through it because they have a lotta company and support made me feel like there was something inherently wrong with me.
Eventually, I grew to realize that they weren't "better" than me in an objective way, they just chose a conveniently less lonely path, but ultimately they seem to be very stagnant on their work because of it. Having so much support seems to make them conform to where they are right now. I might be comparatedly lonely but I'm always looking for improvement and its bearing fruit.
Though, having more friends might help too. It's all about balance.

Thank god this was recommended to me. These feelings I think are not talked about enough when it comes to the animation industry and between artists. I’ve managed to do a lot outside of animation and it’s kept me level headed. I just think we need to have these kinds of discussions pop up more often to sort of get some of that heavy jealousy off your back, especially when most animators probably understand and support one another with the same issues. There’s probably a lot more regarding my statement but that’s a general consensus I have of this topic.

I had an instance where I was jealous of a friend, this happened a lot a decade ago I got jealous of artists so often. I expressed this to them, only once did an artist I was jealous of show me the response to the jealousy that frankly should become somewhat of a standard. He sat down and taught me something I didn't know. I still use what he taught me to this day. The other times I expressed jealousy it was met with anger towards me, I lost them as friends because I saw myself as just not good enough and they saw something else. But the one guy, he was so damn kind I will never forget him. I took his grace to heart and now just about ten years later from when he stepped up and took some time to teach me some things I follow his example. Rather than be angry at someone for being jealous of me, rare as that is, I make some time for them and show them something they don't know so they can grow too.
Capitalism has turned artists against each other. The market is so competitive and over saturated because we don't see value in doing something small, personal, or home made anymore. It has to be for a major corporation to have any value in our lives. That's extremely unhealthy for what being an artist truly means. I want to see everyone around me drawing pictures, I was to see all my friends pick up a pen and put anything down on the page even if it's a dragon that looks like a potato. Even if the anatomy is all wrong I don't care. AI is now stepping in and someone who is a friend of a friend came into my life with an AI generated icon of his fursona. I will never support AI, i was angry not at him but the AI itself, he got on the defensive when I just said "ew" to it being AI. I stopped this instantly when he just said "I'm broke" like everyone is broke my guy but I would rather him not use some stolen work sucking up all our water. I offered to just make him one of his very own without AI bullshit. I don't really do commission work anymore, the rat race is a headache and causes emotional turmoil, this isn't a commission to me this is me fighting AI by making sure he doesn't advertise it as his icon and he gets to have free art.
Your jealousy has a correlation to capitalism, look deeper within the reasons and you'll find that disney, universal, and sony are making you attack your fellow artists. Teach each other, don't let evil corporations dictate your emotional state and don't let them make you "keep secrets of the trade" to yourself. It's just spreading more evil in a world where we need love now more than ever.

I've been in this mindset for no more than three years. And I can say it definitely sucks to constantly think about it as well as struggling to cope with it. But after watching this video and sharing your sides, I might have a better understanding of how to cope with it.
My father told me that the goal in life is to overachieve, but that seems to also be a handicap for me. Not just with art and animation, but with life in general. Attempting to overachieve might also worsen the mindset of being jealous and that you deserve just as much as people you look up to. I guess I just need to remind myself that even though I'm only one person, I can't be what people expect me to be. I want to be the me I've always been, and I'll take this to my grave.
I hope by the next days of my life, I can finally leave this jealousy phase and just remember I can always improve.

As someone who used to be a Rachel Berry religiously pursuing my animation dreams from age 12-23, who ended up content and fulfilled in a completely different industry, I have to say a lot of these lessons are learned much faster in non-creative fields where you’re less emotionally attached to your craft. Where your craft doesn’t shape your identity because it’s not what makes you special. You’re more open to other aspects of yourself that help develop self love.

Not in the industry, but I've experience this...however I have also experienced the opposite. It sounds weird, but I barely consider myself an animator, but despite that...my first fully colored and complete animation blew up. So much so that I got overwhelmed. Over 100K on Tiktok and 24K on Twitter. I saw before posting, friends who did some nice animations and it kept inspiring me to complete my spur-of-the-moment project. Seeing them get less attention than me for arguably doing more work...I felt bad. Not only that, following this up has been...intimidating in a way. I wanted to do animation for forever and just wasn't good at it. I still am not great but people were baffled I didn't consider myself an animator.
Anyway, I am less envious now but at the expense of feeling like I "stole" something my peers I feel rightfully deserve so much more than I do. I don't know if that makes sense.

I relate to this and I am experiencing this for a very long time now. I am a freelance artist and I barely have any recognition as an artist. No one takes notice of my art. I barely have any followers on my art pages or likes on my posts. Meanwhile, there's this friend of mine, who is also an artist, and we nearly have the same experiences from the past in growing as an artist because we graduated from the same school. But our lives are very different now. He is being recognized as a great artist. He's being hired on great projects. Heck, he was also invited to a TV show in our country. And here I am still struggling with my work and my finances. And I am barely holding it together. It feels very unfair considering that I too have tried so hard to sharpen my skills. Taking different jobs to study different art styles. But still, here I am struggling and mildly contemplating if I should continue this path or just stop. I know it is also unfair to my friend and other great artists out there considering they're just doing what they love and didn't intend to hurt others. I do recognize that. But no matter how hard I try to fix my mind from it, it is still very hard to forget jealousy and insecurities if you're a struggling artist for a very long time.

  • @yesntpan
    @yesntpan 6 месяцев назад +1

Fun way to look at jealousy that i thought of, imagine you're playing a game and you have a perfectly working build and you're having fun. Then you look at your friend who did a different build and uses a weapon you can't use that happens to be really strong, and you might feel like you should have just done that as well. Even if you had a perfectly fine time before you might be pissed, and Going out of your way to just get to that weapon would probably just stretch your stats thin and make your own build weaker when your build might have otherwise scaled better in the end game
So if you think your direction is viable and satisfying for you then going off to another path just to satisfy your jealousy is just taking away from what you are working towards. Even just jealousy itself and the unnecessary thoughts it generates can sap energy, and i myself struggle a lot with it. But i know that whenever i've done my thing the way i want i have been at my most productive, even if on social media it might not show

In my college animation course. my professor told us not to draw anime style either, but for good reason.
A lot of people in the course that drew in an anime style were using it as a crutch for not having fundamentals in how to draw and caricature for animation since anime takes a high fundamental understanding of human anatomy to make it look correct in motion, so probably not the best choice for amature students learning a craft.
Also tv anime takes a lot of shortcuts to meet tight deadlines like still holds on a drawing that lasts multiple seconds or drawing less frames when it comes to movement.
So when teaching someone how to bring the illusion of life to a cartoon character, it probably is counter intuitive to use high skilled artists using tv production limited animation cheats as examples. Learn the proper fundamentals, then you can creatively break the rules or create in different styles like anime, basically.

Oh man, art jealousy especially s u c k s. i always see someone else's style and think, "man, why can't i draw like that?!"
I think its important to understand that you don't get jealous because somebody else has a good thing- you get jealous because you *already* felt like you weren't 'good enough' or living up to some standard, and seeing someone else live up to that *better* than you turns your own attention and insecurities to the inferior feeling.
Like, you don't suddenly become unhappy with your art skill just because someone else is better than you, you were likely already unhappy with it and only realized when you compared yourself to a better artist.
So i guess, trying to stop jealousy is treating the symptom and not the cause. its important to not only feel your feelings, but especially in this case to dig deeper and figure out WHY you're feeling this way. the jealous feeling is like a hologram- you can attack it, punch it, kick it, do everything you can to make it stop, but until you unplug the projector nothing's gonna work.
i always find i'm the least jealous when i find a way to be content with what i have, and realize that what i have does NOT affect my (or anyone's!!) inherent worth. then i can focus on being inspired by others and not jealous, of them; i can celebrate their achievements as well as my own, instead of having a "drag them down with me" mentality.
idk. im a psychology nerd. art is fun. remember that's the whole point and don't let jealousy take that away from you.

I.e. My uncle is a judge and people will buddy with him, so that he can help their kids get into a good law firm.
It just the people you know and how well they know the industry, better connection more opportunity.

I think this feeling is so universal. But it might be worse in creative spaces. It feels like „creativity“ is something people tend to think of as an inherent trait, not something learned and improved. And people might like artwork you know took way less skill than yours.
Also: I‘m autistic. I unconsciously „trained myself“ to always comparing myself to others and conform and excel in order to have a reason to still belong, even though I was lacking communication wise

My jealousy usually comes from people who don't seem to appreciate what I do, and the unique things I bring to the table.
It's not everyday you see someone go from tinkering with computers all day to becoming an artist/animator overnight all because they were "bored", and wanted something that was easier to explain to other people without diving into the "tech weeds"
But no matter how much I bend over backwards to try pleasing both myself and others, and even going as far as programming my own tools, I've kinda hit a plateau with my popularity while other artists just pass me by like it's nothing.
So yeah, got pretty jealous overtime. Though, after a while I just stopped trying. I'm taking a break to go back to tinker around with computers for a while.
It's lonelier sure, but at least I expect it.

Somebody who tells you something as broad as "don't do anime" probably doesn't have your interests in mind. The only problem with "it's art so I can do whatever" is if that mentality keeps you from finding a formula or has you neglect objective truths, like rules of perspective and lighting and other constants. You can't guarantee everybody will like it without any true rules and my philosophy is that everything should have a logic to it even if it's not photorealism logic, but there's a lot of toxic "I don't like it so nobody else should" mentality, and art should be the last place people should pull rank and try to control it all. Don't fall victim to people using those black and white logic patterns. Teachers aren't always right

This might sound a bit silly, but there’s a channel in a Discord server I’m in where you can post art. When I shared mine, people barely said anything and/or criticised something about it I don’t think I can even change. When this other person shared his art, people were like- ‘WOW, that’s so good, you WORKED HARD to improve like that, blah blah blah’. I don’t even think his art is better than mine. Newsflash: I ALSO worked hard to improve. I used to suck at digital art. I’d post things in that channel like- ‘hey, I shaded a ball. :)’ and ‘I learned how to draw water’, but when I put comics in there that I was proud of, I got little to no recognition. In a nutshell: this other person on Discord got way more attention for the same f’ing thing as me, and I’m salty. I think I’m jealous, but I have a hard time recognising when I am. Am I? :’)

My preaching: Jelousy is useless if the goal is to do crafts well. If someone is successful and I'm not, they likely deserve it. Hard work != success. Hard work *in the correct way* leads to success.
Either you've been doing it wrong or it's still a delayed gratification to come.
It seems like for some people emotional management is way harder than it should be and that's just a poor setup that should be changed.

Just one of the best things is to just never compare yourself to other I felt like man I was being tossed into the deep end where I could not swim while other kids where playing water polo and lapping me I built up n worked independently for years to get to a point where I genuinely felt like I was leading my class! I spend a lot of my time working on my show about the 7 deadly sins but it’s not just a concept it’s almost a code of rules n ethics I truly do hold dear to my soul n yah man envy is a really ugly sin it can damage your pride worse then any other one it’s not healthy to hold yourself to other standards just go at the pace you are going and only compare yourself to your past n where u are now hopefully your future will be looking brighter cuz u can see a big change n improvement in the present

Jealousy is expecially dangerous if one thinks it's the reason for critique from others.
I'm actualy a pretty good example for that. Toniko, you are my go to animator on YT to link to others because I think you're one of the better ones who teach it, without being stuck up.
But I don't often like your human designs. Especially the women. Especially the faces, the noses, lips and eyes, for reasons I'm not allowed to say on YT, but let's go with "looks too calarts/tumblr for me".
Since I consider you very skilled, more skilled than I am, both at animation and art, I technically could pass as jealous, but I legitimately have actual reasons not to like the designs I touched upon just now. Not because you implemented or drew them badly, but because I find them unappealing.
So, while I could be stamped away as jealous, my dislike is not borne from that. And I'm sure you get what I mean... I just wish everyone could see that. Plenty of artists out there can sink into the mire of "they're just all jealous".
