But im glad I didn't, you made me realize everything I did wrong.
    I tried everything, every tutorial videos, every anatomy break downs, I learned a little to nothing at all. Your way of teaching made the most sense to me, the way how to use reference effectively. The difference in my drawings compared to my old ones are night and day, it no longer feels flat or "off" it made me more motivated to do art now. This may work, but as there are no straight lines in nature I'm not sure it's the way to approach figure drawing.

      I haven't seen too many of these videos, but as a teacher he needs to consider the ideas he puts in people's heads. For example a manikin figure illustrates the block forms of a body but is completely deficient in capturing the subtle nuances of balance or movement.
      The body has a fluidity of movement that takes careful study. It's fascinating. But I don't think bringing straight lines into something that's more about fluid arcs, is overly helpful.
      I've seen the same idea said about drawing trees. Every aspect of a tree is best represented as an arc, unless you're trying some kind of geometric abstraction. And that's for later after you've understood the pattern of growth.

      Thanks, Sean. Most of my life has been given over to the study of art. I've taught a bit, been an illustrator but all along the intention has been to try and understand 'the basics' as much as possible. That might be why I chime in when I see someone say 'don't draw curves, draw straight lines'. I think I see what he's he's getting art but we're drawing people here not robots.
      Understanding the minutiae of gesture and expression, I believe, is very important in figurative work. So I'm just suggesting people take his advice with a pinch of salt.

    Drawing with straight lines helps you understand the shape in 3d space. As you’re drawing yourself a curved line that’s part of a bigger picture, is harder for your mind to “read” quickly. So starting with straight lines makes you quickly establish the object in 3d, then once you can “see” it easily, sure you should use curved lines wherever appropriate.

    • @Soulyris
      @Soulyris 4 года назад +3

      It's taught me that straights are very useful in understanding the motions on a fundamental level. Then obviously afterwards you can make it as curved as you want, but knowing how the body is broken down with straights seems to help a lot of people more than using curves as the initial breakdown. Your spine is the only jointed bone in your body that can curve, but even that's typically ever bent at a single point (which you can then round afterwards).
      But also, he often says do whatever helps the most for you. And in this case if curves help you more, then go ahead and do that. Maybe try this out a few times anyway just to see how it goes though! Experimenting is how you learn after all~. :D

    • @addchickpeas956
      @addchickpeas956 4 года назад +5

      His schtick is basically being over the top with all this stuff. He constantly contradicts himself and gives ridiculous ultimatums like this . I think most everyone gets he isn't literally saying to never use curves. He's basically just challenging our basic understanding of form and making a point about finding the simplest form possible as the base of a sketch.

    • @feckethbalcony3666
      @feckethbalcony3666 4 года назад +2

      As someone who's been at it for multiple years and has taken a shitload of courses, yeah this is BS. Maybe a professional artist COULD get away with not using curved lines, but most people are intermediate, and your drawings WILL end up stiff as shit if you don't use curved lines. This dude's whole thing is making intentionally misleading titles and then saying something completely unrelated (usually along the lines of "never be creative, always do exactly this. Also never listen to me") He's entertaining, but he's not the best reference.

    • @addchickpeas956
      @addchickpeas956 4 года назад

    Ethan I have a question for you, I've been following your channel and I've been following your tips. And you're right, drawing over and over numerous times really does not do the trick, learning the basic underlaying shape frame of the drawing is essential. I started drawing when I was 16, I'm 23 now, and I achieved in 2 months what 6 years couldn't. I finally understand your point, but soon I find that I'm only good at doing basic shapes only, and when I add the details on top it looks funny and doesn't go for that solid shape I'm after. As a baby man with a beard following your teachings, what is your best advice to better enhance adding details?

I guess this includes the first initial drawing that determines the shape and also the key poses and in-betweens where you wouldn’t pay much attention to anatomy or proportion as much as the first drawing or pose. I always mess up the proportions, change the size of the characters, simple anatomy and probably some things I don’t even notice.
