Ethan, though I have no formal degree or professional experience, I have been to two unfinished attempts at art school (undiagnosed disability cutting both short; I am on my third attempt with proper help now). I had my figure drawing class in my second attempt with a man who had studied fine arts and moved on to do a master’s degree in Figure Drawing in the USA (I live in Latin America). He taught much the way you do, and I am forever grateful I was taught such important knowledge in this way. All you say in these videos is a Yes after Yes for me and brings back wonderful memories of my art skyrocketing in a single year cause I was taught in this manner, and all the epiphanies I had back in that class. You’re doing gods work in a sea of mediocre art education from people who teach mistakes without realizing, or are great artists, but not good at conveying this info, and I feel like I am galaxy braining even more by watching these and refreshing this knowledge. Thanks for your brave service
People imo jump on hate bandwagons too much and don't think for themselves on why they should think something. Rather, they focus on what to think. See you at D'Angelo's next service.

there's not problem with using a reference or even tracing as long as you give the credits to the owner or if the reference is free to use. Naughtydogs, Warner Bros, Dreamworks and so on use references and trace but they have the rights to do it, they pay for pictures or have a team that takes them. And also you can draw way faster and have better results buy understanding something like you shown in the video instead of tracing it all like Holy Brown use to do. In the end if you only trace you will never get use to draw something on your own and sure It pays the bills and what not but how can an artist feel good about what he/she does when it's all a copy of something. I've traced before but I can care less about that drawing I never posted it since it doesn't have any value to me, it's not my idea, it's not something that I made, it's something that someone else did and I can't just put my name on it to make some quick cash. tracing is a tool to learn and use if necessary but using references instead is like taking out the training wheel of you bike and ride like a real man!
The only problem with tracing is if it actively gets in the way of you learning how to draw properly (which isn't likely, because tracing can teach you how another artist constructs form). The idea of tracing being bad was invented by young artists who have mistaken being an auteur, with being an artist. As a growing artist, putting out a large quantity of work and exploring art is way more important than arguing with people about whether things look "original" or not, or trying to constrain yourself to an "original style". If tracing and heavy referencing wasn't covered under fair use, so much of the art community would be under lawsuit. That would mean every art parody and every fan work that every existed would be considered "a problem". In the art industry, 90% of the time your job will be to intentionally invoke another person's style, which pretty much forces you to do things like tracing and heavy references. That's how movies, tv shows, video games and comics get made.
So this is about the fifth video I've seen of yours, and I just gotta say thanks. For some quick background I'm 24, but my drawing has been the same since I was 16. (Had an abusive family, took my art away, blah blah blah. Been trying to regain that passion I had for art since then.) I have a webtoon now, but have a tough time drawing it because everything feels very stiff and 2D and I didn't know how to improve anymore. Watching your videos though have shown me a path to learning and getting better, and I feel like I can start moving forward again and genuinely up my art. So, thank you.
The editing is soooo good and entertaining I've been waiting for any RUclipsr to point those artists out Most Beginner artist are looking up to them cause they're famous....and the other side the real artist you give tip's that would really improve And they mostly have less followers So messed up~

Yessss! Thank you for your work on Voltron! Truly one of my favorite animated series of all time. This is really helpful advice. I also appreciate your humor. Also, the music in this video is lit af 🔥
That’s the thing I loved about the Voltron art style. The style was in a way simple where you can find body shapes and break down complex character design and spaces into simple shapes that are nice to look at and study for a noob artist such as myself. When I was creating fanart I was learning a lot but observing. The style is simple in shapes but detailed where it complimented beautifully with the simplicity it had. The style of the show and how characters are designed, characters are animated, and the show over all makes me see hearts ever time I watch it. The show had its own aesthetic that takes my breath every time I re-watch it and reminds me why I love to draw and keeps me going to learn more and become a better artist based off references I have mentally made in the show. . . . . . the choices made at the end of the show to end the story and how they ended the story made me cringe and mad as hell but art style of the show makes me shake with excitement. What I’m disappointed in is last minute choices made in story telling. But the show still has a special place in my heart.
It would be wonderful if you could list the Instagram accounts that you highlighted in the description :'D On another note, this popped up in my feed, so congrats on getting recommended! I hope your channel continues to grow, yer pretty hilarious while still being helpful and showing great examples.

It’s obvious that the animators of steven universe never uses these character sheets when you look and the numerous inconsistencies in shapes and height throughout the show.
Yeah, Rebecca Sugar said that she intentionally does that to let the storyboard artists have more creative control and put their personal touch in it or whatever, but...the end result doesn't look like a well-thought out artistic choice, it looks like a cheap shortcut or rookie mistake. There are plenty of times cartoons go off-model intentionally (usually for comedic effect) so why not let the storyboard artists use their own personal style *then* instead of having Steven randomly change from 5 feet tall to 2 feet tall?
that is the only thing i dont understand a bout construction with shapes: "look its a box, and this part down here: also a box" 3min later: "look its a circle" like do you just have to adapt the shape for each perspective? one was male and the other female does that make a difference? im just failing to see the logic in this. i know that it works but i just dont know how
Im there with you. Ive managed to draw without construction this long but I know my art will never get better unless I can, but Im so lost. No one ever explains in detail, they just tell me what I should be doing and trace over something as an example. None of this is helpful.
Hm... i've drawn without shapes for a long time too. Maybe we can try like a new exercise? Drawing 3D shapes with no corners on a paper. And then trying to find shapes in our own drawings. Like, for example, in a picture of a person, how the torso is a rectangle with two of its corners far apart? (in my language it's said 'trapecio', idk how to say it in English) I really have no idea :(
I really shouldn't have started watching this channel in the middle of working on a MAP part... My self-esteem is lowered so much I don't know if I'll be able to finish it by the deadline... I honestly want to just give up now. Welp. Really good advice though!! /gen

I felt like a fraud trying to learn this way even when I started to see improvement. This video encouraged me so much and I'm more determined than ever!! Thank you for this

Dude I’ve never seen you before but I’m hooked in the first 2 minutes 👌🏽 quality content
Young artists and old beginners like me. I need make my brain understand 3D spaces and basic shapes. I hate it that I struggle with this so much.
Same here😭😭
ethan is probably one of my favourite animation youtubers who can both teach and entertain since he makes every video both educational and a meme
People imo jump on hate bandwagons too much and don't think for themselves on why they should think something. Rather, they focus on what to think.
See you at D'Angelo's next service.
You hittin me with those *baby eyes*
thumbs up all the way and subbed big man!! loved the 4:28 as I follow it since the first day I was able to be a hellion like I was.
You make the learning INTERESTING and FUN, it's such a tiny detail that makes the learning process way easier to go through.
my notes:
00:00 - intro, no drama
01:45 - jk
02:42 - lesgo
03:11 - big babies trace too
03:40 - "maybe i'll be tracer"
03:43 - about reference
04:25 - "pratice makes perfect doesnt exist, perfect pratice makes perfect"
04:51 - that's gold!!! let's check out how a professional do it
a) break down in simple shapes
b) focus on foundations, not details
06:46 - is that a box?
07:39 - anything have a shape, there is no guessing
08:38 - about focus, what do u want?
so the point is: find the pro ref that will help you with ur perfect pratice
ig to follow: kihyunryu, christinebiandraws, cteec, kennethladekjer, teespencil, artofsteveahn
Ur so nice for not only showing these artists but explaining them, breaking everything down very nice. im subscribing!
there's not problem with using a reference or even tracing as long as you give the credits to the owner or if the reference is free to use. I've traced before but I can care less about that drawing I never posted it since it doesn't have any value to me, it's not my idea, it's not something that I made, it's something that someone else did and I can't just put my name on it to make some quick cash. tracing is a tool to learn and use if necessary but using references instead is like taking out the training wheel of you bike and ride like a real man!
yeah no, professional here, you dont have to give credit to a reference
Paladin highly doubt you’re a ‘professional’
preet sameer Amateur that’s going into studies for art here, you don’t have to credit a reference.
@@panipuuri artist that cant figure out how titles work here
You dont have credit a reference
So this is about the fifth video I've seen of yours, and I just gotta say thanks. For some quick background I'm 24, but my drawing has been the same since I was 16. (Had an abusive family, took my art away, blah blah blah. Been trying to regain that passion I had for art since then.) I have a webtoon now, but have a tough time drawing it because everything feels very stiff and 2D and I didn't know how to improve anymore. Watching your videos though have shown me a path to learning and getting better, and I feel like I can start moving forward again and genuinely up my art. So, thank you.
The editing is soooo good and entertaining
I've been waiting for any RUclipsr to point those artists out
Most Beginner artist are looking up to them cause they're famous....and the other side the real artist you give tip's that would really improve
And they mostly have less followers
So messed up~
You turned into my favorite youtuber in about 13 seconds. I love your work thank you so much for being an inspiration to us babies out there! Mad respect my man!
That opening is perfect
Yessss! Thank you for your work on Voltron! Truly one of my favorite animated series of all time. This is really helpful advice. I also appreciate your humor. Also, the music in this video is lit af 🔥
“Perfect practice makes perfect” Ive heard him say this for about the 5th time and now I finally understand.....I feel so STUPID
Your channel is so inspiring to me so is your art and cool personality haha
That’s the thing I loved about the Voltron art style. The style was in a way simple where you can find body shapes and break down complex character design and spaces into simple shapes that are nice to look at and study for a noob artist such as myself. When I was creating fanart I was learning a lot but observing. The style is simple in shapes but detailed where it complimented beautifully with the simplicity it had. The style of the show and how characters are designed, characters are animated, and the show over all makes me see hearts ever time I watch it. The show had its own aesthetic that takes my breath every time I re-watch it and reminds me why I love to draw and keeps me going to learn more and become a better artist based off references I have mentally made in the show. .

the choices made at the end of the show to end the story and how they ended the story made me cringe and mad as hell but art style of the show makes me shake with excitement. What I’m disappointed in is last minute choices made in story telling. But the show still has a special place in my heart.
This channel deserves more subscribers! Atleast a million has really good content
The "maybe I'll be Tracer" caught me so off guard XD
THANK YOU FOR THIS!!! I was kind of lost in how to create body shapes but the fast flow of how you explained everything got me hyped!
It would be wonderful if you could list the Instagram accounts that you highlighted in the description :'D
On another note, this popped up in my feed, so congrats on getting recommended! I hope your channel continues to grow, yer pretty hilarious while still being helpful and showing great examples.
Why does his face look so cute. I just can't get over his tiny little nose.
dude ok when i saw father wallace i shed a happy tear
omg my life changed watching these. This makes me so happy to watch this because is painfully relevant to me and what I see and think haha. This is so ridiculously awesome so THANK YOUUUUU!!!!
that "maybe I'll be tracer" caught me off guard, holy
The video actually starts after 5 minutes

cmon...This was worth it for once.
dude, you can say that with every youtube video ever
not laugh, didn’t laugh
For anyone who's wondering, the first 5 minutes is an intro, but trust me, don't skip it, its one of the best expiriences of my life
This guy is too passive aggressive for my baby brain
I’m glad finally someone talked about 3D space because when ever I try to break anything down I just see some 2D TRASH and it makes me feel like I can’t try anything at all like I’m stuck in a loop.
Young me: i'll gonna learn some Art anatomy!
RUclips tutorials: im gonna destroy this kid's whole career

This guy is probably the best guy in explaining how to improve.
秋木休NeGeX I agree, he is pretty real when it comes to this stuff
@@braylonrandle1731 He probably jot down every frustration and experience in his mind as he goes.
your videos are great man! i think im gonna start watching voltron thanks to you!. and is that painting in the back made by simon stalenhag?
Best video ever, thank you, I needed it.
11:07 what are you talking about, it's clearly a jelly-filled donut
It’s obvious that the animators of steven universe never uses these character sheets when you look and the numerous inconsistencies in shapes and height throughout the show.
Yeah, Rebecca Sugar said that she intentionally does that to let the storyboard artists have more creative control and put their personal touch in it or whatever, but...the end result doesn't look like a well-thought out artistic choice, it looks like a cheap shortcut or rookie mistake.
There are plenty of times cartoons go off-model intentionally (usually for comedic effect) so why not let the storyboard artists use their own personal style *then* instead of having Steven randomly change from 5 feet tall to 2 feet tall?
ur so underrated smh 😤
You have amazing editing skills!! Damn! Love watching and learning.
3:41 Why am I laughing so much at this?
Keep it up. I enjoyed this immensely and I actually offered a platter of fruits to the gods of RUclips algo for this recommendation.
that is the only thing i dont understand a bout construction with shapes: "look its a box, and this part down here: also a box" 3min later: "look its a circle"
like do you just have to adapt the shape for each perspective? one was male and the other female does that make a difference?
im just failing to see the logic in this. i know that it works but i just dont know how
Im there with you.
(in my language it's said 'trapecio', idk how to say it in English)
I really have no idea :(
@@nadialucia6647 that would be trapezoid in english
I'm starting out to draw
And everybody is saying it but i still don't understand
I really shouldn't have started watching this channel in the middle of working on a MAP part... My self-esteem is lowered so much I don't know if I'll be able to finish it by the deadline... I honestly want to just give up now. Welp.
Really good advice though!! /gen
