I just want to say thank you for this song. I'm suffering from compound grief. My sister died (quickly) from cancer in September, and it hit me hard. We were really close. Then my mom died in November, just before Thanksgiving, after having a hip replacement. I was with her when she passed. I had to take care of her final wishes and service. Then my father passed in his home in January, just before my birthday. I found him. I had to do everything from getting him cremated, planning his service, cleaning out his estate, etc. In that 5 month period of time, I also lost two friends (one was in his early 30's) and my aunt. I'm so depressed. I heard this song and immediately connected to it. It's absolutely perfect. So thank you for sharing this. It was even released at the perfect time. As a matter of fact, I even told my mental health counselor about the song. It's absolutely beautiful.

This song is another amazing one. I sat and thought about the video for a bit, and my interpretation. I think the fluffy character is a representation of Jamal and that everywhere Ed goes, Jamal is there, but not real. He thinks he sees him in everything he looks at. If you notice, at the very end, Ed says "I'm dancing with my" and then the character is gone. Like Jamal. A representation of the fact that Jamal is actually truly gone. A feeling of being alone and the emptiness that comes with it. I'm so sorry for Ed's loss. How devastating. I've not lost a best friend yet, but I've lost many family members. Grief is horrendous. I interpreted it as grief/depression. Him keeping his eyes closed was his way of not wanting to deal with his grief and so it gets bigger and bigger until it consumes him, leading him to dive off into the water. Only when he opened his eyes and faced it was he able to deal with it. And this brings him back around, away from the edge.

You are such an intuitive singer/songwriter and your songs are full of raw emotion, and evoke the same. My daughter and son-in-law even used your song Perfect for their wedding song, as it really does describe the love they have together (they have been a couple since they were 15, married 5 years yesterday, and now have a beautiful little girl, 2 years old). As much as this song made me cry, I know I need to let it out, and it's so beautiful, even as it is heartwrenching. My fiancé passed away February 2021 and my best friend passed away December 2022. This song describes the the life I live now. The monster that followed him around was the perfect representation of grief to me. It never goes away, it walks with you forever now. I’ve learned to embrace and move forward with it. You never “move on”, you move forward with them in everything you do ❤️❤️❤️
When he makes down to earth, soul-inducing songs, this is true. But in recent years he's made music mainly to please the larger audience which means his music is very much like everything else being produced. But I'm hoping subtract will bring him back to his early days of song writing, which to me, was the peak of his lyricism.

When I first heard just a portion of this song, at the initial listen, I thought it was just a routine break-up song, but after taking a closer look at the lyrics and looking up the backstory behind this (and discovering that this is actually about coping with death and grieving), it just hits completely different now. I lost my Dad just over a year and a half ago, not long before Visiting Hours came out. As sad as it makes me every time I hear it, there's some sort of comfort knowing other people have been though it too - especially someone I look up to. This song is the same. I went to a concert of his in 2015 and he’s still to this day the best artist I’ve ever seen live. His voice is so good that it actually sounds better live because a recording studio cannot do him justice. Like imagine being that good of a singer that your voice cannot be captured in its best form.

Dear Ed. This came out at the exact right time. My boyfriend's father just passed away yesterday. We are grieving so much. I just want to say thank you for this song. I'm suffering from compound grief. My sister died (quickly) from cancer in September, and it hit me hard. We were really close. Then my mom died in November, just before Thanksgiving, after having a hip replacement. I was with her when she passed. I had to take care of her final wishes and service. Then my father passed in his home in January, just before my birthday. I found him. I had to do everything from getting him cremated, planning his service, cleaning out his estate, etc. In that 5 month period of time, I also lost two friends (one was in his early 30's) and my aunt. I'm so depressed. I heard this song and immediately connected to it. It's absolutely perfect. So thank you for sharing this. It was even released at the perfect time. As a matter of fact, I even told my mental health counselor about the song. It's absolutely beautiful.

This song is another amazing one. I sat and thought about the video for a bit, and my interpretation. I think the fluffy character is a representation of Jamal and that everywhere Ed goes, Jamal is there, but not real. He thinks he sees him in everything he looks at. If you notice, at the very end, Ed says "I'm dancing with my" and then the character is gone. Like Jamal. A representation of the fact that Jamal is actually truly gone. A feeling of being alone and the emptiness that comes with it. I'm so sorry for Ed's loss. How devastating. I've not lost a best friend yet, but I've lost many family members. Grief is horrendous. Him keeping his eyes closed was his way of not wanting to deal with his grief and so it gets bigger and bigger until it consumes him, leading him to dive off into the water. Only when he opened his eyes and faced it was he able to deal with it. And this brings him back around, away from the edge.

I lost my husband to cancer in January and this song just reached down into my grief like a hand. He passed away two days shy of what would have been our 30th wedding anniversary and some days I feel like I am doing exactly what you sing about. I still see him, feel him, everywhere. Our daughter has always been a big fan of yours, and she introduced me to your music. What you write and sing about touches people deeply. You are such an intuitive singer/songwriter and your songs are full of raw emotion, and evoke the same. My daughter and son-in-law even used your song Perfect for their wedding song, as it really does describe the love they have together (they have been a couple since they were 15, married 5 years yesterday, and now have a beautiful little girl, 2 years old). As much as this song made me cry, I know I need to let it out, and it's so beautiful, even as it is heartwrenching. The monster that followed him around was the perfect representation of grief to me. It never goes away, it walks with you forever now. I’ve learned to embrace and move forward with it. I lost my Dad just over a year and a half ago, not long before Visiting Hours came out. As sad as it makes me every time I hear it, there's some sort of comfort knowing other people have been though it too - especially someone I look up to. This song is the same. As much as I love happy and poppy songs, sometimes I need an album that understands the struggles and challenges am facing in life and makes me feel less alone in it. Ed Sheeran has done it again

I’m sorry for your loss. I lost my Grandpa in ‘03, my Mom in ‘06, a dear friend in ‘15, my Dad in ‘19, and my grandma in ‘21 so hearing this song did help me. Pop songs are great, so is rock, but sometimes you need something you can relate to and this song just… I don’t have words

I went to a concert of his in 2015 and he’s still to this day the best artist I’ve ever seen live. His voice is so good that it actually sounds better live because a recording studio cannot do him justice. Like imagine being that good of a singer that your voice cannot be captured in its best form.

However, it's been exactly 3 years since I lost my eldest brother to Covid-19 suddenly who used to be my father figure/brother/closest friend/God who stood always by my side, fought for me politely with others and always taught me to be truthful and do what's right even if I have to stand alone and become lonely. Some family members who never liked me and my eldest bro took the opportunity to hit me hard post his demise and 3 years on, I am standing alone safeguarding what's right and truthful. Miss him every sngle day.
One year ago I was taken away from my life due to health issues. I am lucky to be here one year later. But during my hard days in the hospital I would close my eyes plug in and listen to Ed trying to step out of my bubble and ignore the beeps from my machine. Im blessed to be with my family today.
