Everyone talks about how sad it is that we waste our childhood trying to grow up, but it's equally sad that we waste the rest of our lives wishing we were younger.

@@moorejeffery1490 Hey Moore, I don't know if these words will effect you in any way, but I just want you to know that you have still got your whole life ahead of you. Despite myself being closer to your age (24) I've learned a great deal about myself as a person, while still getting a hold of this whole "adulting" thing. No matter what family members, peers, or strangers may say, you take the time you need to figure out what you want out of life. There will be times where you may feel lost and not quite sure if you're taking the right path to success, but you will get there eventually. Best of luck to your future and know that others will always be rooting for you on the sidelines.
@Moore Jeffrey I'm 17 too. I don't wanna get into my life, but it's rough (as many people's are). I suggest reading First Things First by Covey Leadership - it'll be worth it
For me, this is the best song of Ed, it hits so freaking hard. When we're young, we meet people, then they become our friends, and then we think that it's going to last forever. But with the time, most of them go away, and it's not our or their fault, it just happens. Although, in the end, the memories never go away; it can be a simple habit, or a moment. liking it or not, they stay with us.
Ugh, this songs makes me cry every single time. Especialy the last part: "One friend left to sell clothes One works down by the coast One had two kids but lives alone One’s brother overdosed Ones already on his second wife Ones just barely getting by But these people raised me And I can’t wait to go home" Because I know I am probably never going home, and I will probably never see them again. It really hurts.
I was never in a close-knit group of friends, just seemed to be the 'other' or an outsider. I do envy close childhood friendships regardless of how adult circumstances may change over time. As a middle aged bloke I've come to the realisation that I must be not likeable. That's life!

This song is so touching, because it actually tells about us when we were young. Careless, sloppy, rebellious, and do not know who we are. We don't know we're making a memory, we're just having fun at the time. Sometimes we regret it, but sometimes we want to repeat it. And when we look back at the hill that witnessed our mischief, everything has changed. And we can't go back there, we can only enjoy the remnants of memories.

Sae :) "life is a journey, not a destination" - this song takes me back to when I was a teenager & doing all this stuff (I hate to say nearly 20 years ago 😨) - you never really start to feel 'old' - the stuff you do just changes. Some people change, some people are always there, new people come along.... always remember in everything you do, you are making memories. Nothing beats that - grab every opportunity & hunt them down. I love that what you say suggests you're a happy teenager & enjoying life - I so know many, I'm not stereotyping the whole 'moody teenage crap', but so often comments are more about wishing life away - just keep enjoying what you're doing, you'll be fine. I don't usually write comments like that, but I got really ill at 22. Just as I graduated from my Master's degree. Life changed in ways I would never have imagined, it certainly didn't go as planned, and over 10 years later I'm still battling to get my health back. Would I have chosen it? Of course not, but (cliché) it really has taught me what is important is family, friends, happiness - & health(!) - if you have those things, you are lucky. I look back on my teenage years & they were fantastic. I'm so glad I did so much when I could: travelled, partied, competed nationally in my sport, worked abroad, volunteered, geeked out at school to get good degrees - depends on what you want to do, just focus on being good at what you love & remember there is a place for everyone, the world beyond school is vast & exciting - explore it. I'm so happy I did all that and more with great friends & made great friends in the process. Some will last a lifetime, treasure them - they aren't always who you expect to be around forever. Ultimately, be happy, be kind & make the most of it all. ✌ (*The 'oldest' sounding comment I think I've ever written, but these lyrics make me nostalgic. ... so all true!)
That's soo cool bro! Can you help me with my journey of learning japanese? In exchange i can answer any question about English that you might have (although i doubt you'll need my help) my name is Ali, will you be my friend?

How is almost no one talking about how great the music video was made? The director and his team did a great job of perfectly fitting the video to the song. 👍👌 I hope I get to make an awesome music video like that one day. ^^
Oh yeah, it's really relatable I reckon for lots of people or just to compare themselves to this. The director and the team deserve some recognition as well in the comments though ツ
I feel like this is not actually a song to youth but to young adults. Those just old enough to have left home a few years ago and grow up a bit. Like after a year or two at university. A song to look back on 'the good old days' and realize that while all of them have developed in different directions your friends are still your friends and are likely to stay that forever. But that might be my interpretation only because I'm just that age :D
Trekki200 this is a good interpretation. For me, I'm in my mid 30's and this makes me think of going to my hometown. I've done a lot of growing up and changing over the years, but I will never forget where I came from. This is one of the most nostalgic songs I have ever heard.
Ed's music is excellent , but everyone should really appreciate the music video team! It perfectly complements the song and that's hard to find these days! Excellent work

I'm 26 and most of my closest friends are dead. This song hits me hard and I come back to remember the time I had with them. They'd want me to keep moving and that's what I plan on doing.
Your only 26 I'm 73 and I love this song it reminds me of my happy youth and lots of sad memories also but it's good to remember all of what's happened in your life stay strong and stay safe
I first heard this song when I was 16 and it was beautiful. I'm now turning 23 next month and it recently made me cry, which it never has. This got me through all of high school, and though I understood the messages of the song it never really hit as strong as it does now when I feel myself getting older. I never realized how incredibly this song captures the feeling of aging. That feeling that you're leaving or have already left your youth and you look back with a sense of fondness at all the dumb shit you did with your friends and each lesson you took away when you were humbled. At the same time no matter how much you may feel you've outgrown the place and the people you grew up with you never truly have and there will always be a special place for them and that, is just so fucking beautiful.
This song is for my son. It tells of his growing up with his friends at the same time as Ed, 30 miles away from where Ed did. We lost him through drugs and severe mental illness. But he lived that beautiful experience, growing up in rural East anglia, doing the same crazy stuff. Ed tells a story of many young people but the endings are different.
I'm sorry for your son, unfortunately we are losing our young people to drugs! It would be good for all parents to have one faith, one path to follow and not forsake their children even for a second, just like the animals that take care of their young until adulthood! do not lose hope, one day you will see your son, trust in GOD. look for it can comfort your heart

I’m not even completely out of childhood and I already miss it. I guess I kind of had to grow up fast.
To all reading this, I hope all good memories stays in your mind forever 🫶
This song makes me wish that I had a rebellious childhood that I could feel nostalgic about.

Am I the only one who likes this better than shape of you ?
I mean shape of you is great and all, but I think this wins
Shane ONeil This song Wins! definetely!!! ❤🎶✨
Nadia Herrera :)
Shane ONeil i think the lyrical meaning in this won over the shape of you. but both single is awesome, def 👌
No. this one defs is the killer. shape of you is more of a radio song and this song is for people who appreciates lyrics that are not about sex.
I’m still listening in 2025. This will always be one of my favorite songs! 💪🏾‼️
I'm a teenager. This song makes me kinda sad cause I know someday I'll be grown up and my life will be completely changed
So make the most of it! :D
That's the beauty of it. If something lasted for ever it wouldn't be meaningful. You can only appreciate good once you've seen bad.

(*The 'oldest' sounding comment I think I've ever written, but these lyrics make me nostalgic. ... so all true!)
I am a Japanese studying English
I was attracted to the lyrics of this song
Ed's song is my motivation to study English
That's soo cool bro! Can you help me with my journey of learning japanese? In exchange i can answer any question about English that you might have (although i doubt you'll need my help) my name is Ali, will you be my friend?
@@alis2068 That’s a good idea. Forgive me if I make you feel bad by using incorrect words in English , I don’t mean it at all.
You are doing an amazing job, Ed's music and lyrics makes me motivated as well. I wish you well on learning English

How is almost no one talking about how great the music video was made? The director and his team did a great job of perfectly fitting the video to the song. 👍👌
I hope I get to make an awesome music video like that one day. ^^

Yeah lol everyone is just complaining about their youth or something xD
Oh yeah, it's really relatable I reckon for lots of people or just to compare themselves to this. The director and the team deserve some recognition as well in the comments though ツ

Totally true!
Anyone in here 2025!?🎉🎉😮
Ed's music is excellent , but everyone should really appreciate the music video team! It perfectly complements the song and that's hard to find these days! Excellent work

Most nostalgic song ever created. I always want to return to my hometown when I hear this
I'm 26 and most of my closest friends are dead. This song hits me hard and I come back to remember the time I had with them. They'd want me to keep moving and that's what I plan on doing.
dont worry they will be by your side helping you when you feel grief from their death they are on your side
do whatever youre planning they will be always there to help you and to support you on what ever youre doing

He's not a songwriter. He's a poet.

Hope you're feeling well bro. ;)
😭😭
Your son is at peace my friend and he lived a good early life. I hope you can find peace in that ❤️
I'm sorry for your son, unfortunately we are losing our young people to drugs!
It would be good for all parents to have one faith, one path to follow and not forsake their children even for a second, just like the animals that take care of their young until adulthood!
