i've never fully understood or really "felt" the lyrics ever since i found this song two years ago (mainly because i forgot the song existed for a year). but now that I've declined even more in life the lyrics resonate with me so well.
Verse 1 - the loneliness and purposelessness of my existence

For those who didnt know this song is actually about the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and the ruins of Pompeii As you can hear in the lyrics "The walls kept tumbling down in the city that we loved great clouds roll over the hills bringing darkness from above" referencing the clouds from the eruption.

To everyone saying they don't understand the song let me help you, In the actual event of pompeii where the volcano erupted and swept over the city all of the residents panicked, Scurrying and running for their lives, But in the end they realized that they were simply doomed and there was no getting out of that massive wall of lava hurdling towards the city. He references pompeii directly with the Walls tumbling down and the darkness above lyrics, Referring to the volcano and then closing your eyes to just think of happier times and accept your fate. Bastille in the video is running from some "Lets say disease for the sake of this comment" But in the end he realizes there i no escaping it so he just accepts his black eyed fate and goes on with whatever it is he does. Same as the residents of pompeii did in their last moments. Taking one last look at all the joy and beauty pretending your surroundings don't matter and letting go. You're welcome

Incase you were wondering about the songs meaning, and the music videos as well i’ll explain. The song is named Pompeii and talks about the tragic event that happened in 79AD in the city of Pompeii when the nearby volcano erupted and the city was covered with meters of ash and smoke. As the people of Pompeii tried to escape their inevitable death, some took shelter and prayed for one last time while being engulfed in flames. Body’s of people who lived in Pompeii are still being found to this day. As for the video the black eyes represent the ash, smoke, and chaos all around, as he tries to escape from pier agony until eventually he can’t run any longer.

Not to be the one that is a smart ass but that isn't quite what happened in Pompeii. The event went for a few days and the majority of people left before the volcano erupted. The ones which died were normally the caretakers of homes (basically surfs) which were told to wait and guard the house incase it was a false alarm (which had happened a few times in the past) and that once it settled down the population would return. Everyone just went to the city down the road which was on the ocean.
it doesn't have much to do but something really similar happened in my home country two years ago and honestly I can't listen to this song without remembering everything that happened...
If you're wondering the country is Guatemala and a volcano eruption literally buried towns and there's still missing people until now.
