In this video, we compare Hot Gas Bypass to the Emerson Digital Compressor.
HOT GAS BYPASS provides an artificial load on the evaporator by introducing a portion of high pressure, high-temperature gas to the evaporator/suction side of the system. An inexpensive and simple way to keep the HVAC system running without freezing the coil but a huge energy waster. The hot gas bypass valve is old technology used on a limited basis today quickly being replaces by modulating compressors or variable capacity compressors.
The Copeland SCROLL DIGITAL offers compressor modulation from 10-100 percent, allowing cooling systems to automatically adjust capacity as needed while reducing energy consumption. This scroll technology allows for precise HVAC system control, is more efficient than on/off compressors, and allows for almost continuous operation during dehumidification modes. Variable-capacity control is accomplished by timing the compression by engaging and disengaging the top scroll while motor speed remains constant. Advantages are efficiency, precise control, very low turn down to 10%, and constant velocity refrigerant allowing for effective oil return. For some of the compressor sizes, the "modulating" can produce unwanted noise. Special considerations for location and attenuation are recommended.

This digital scroll works because the check valve (not shown or mentioned) keeps the high pressure discharge gas from backing up when the compressor is unloaded.

Acoustic means loud as hell especially on a bigger one.

    Hi Tony,
Can you put what you explained about HGBV on a PH diagram or in equation forms in terms of thermodynamic cycle?

    I appreciate your videos, Tony.
What and how are the these controlled? Is there a digital controller that's taking sample readings of suction pressure and/or temperature? Room temp? Etc. I see a lot of cut-away videos of "how" these compressors operate, but nothing really clear on what's controlling these. Thanks

I think they work using feedback pressure based on this video. It seems more mechanical and less digital .

He does a hot gas bypass give wear and tear when the discharge is entered from the evap inlet?? You would still get a cold suction line and good superheat if it’s setup properly

Hi Tony , could you please share how to do selection of the hot gas bypass valve itself? For example this is for cooling tunnel apolication, on this application we need to keep temperature stable and in other side we need to avoid the evaporator freezing ..thanks in advance
