- Many of you have been asking for a sea water time lapse, and even though I'm living in a landlocked country, I didn't want to disappoint. I made a special trip to Lignano Sabbiadoro just to bring you this unique experience. I even brought back a bottle of sea water! So here it is, a sea water time lapse with a twist of travel adventure. Hope you enjoy watching it as much as I enjoyed making it.
🎵 Music
The Chills - Timothy Infinite
Lost out There - instrumental version by The Watershed
Fun Fact:
The ocean is 3.5% salt, and if all the salt in the ocean were spread evenly over the Earth's land surface, it would form a layer more than 150m/500 feet high. That's about as high as a 40 story building.

Listen to the seagull!
Seagull + mealworm time lapse! 😁
@@YoungGandalf2325yes😂thats what i was gonna say too
@@YoungGandalf2325mealworm >>>
Huh??!
lol i hadnt seen the seagull yet so i just assumed you brought one home with the seawater
That is one expensive spoon of salt :D
That footage of the crystals through the microscope looks amazing
Most expensive 12g of salt I ever "bought" :D
@@PhotoOwlNext water 💧 from the lake of Michigan 😜
@@freebirdcanfly2827that would be quite a drive 🤣🤣
@@PhotoOwlyeah it is😅
@@PhotoOwlis this salt edible? Or does it need to be purified or something?
Now this is what I call a quality time lapse video. The inclusion of microscopic view sets this channel apart from other similar channels. Hope to see more contents like this.
Good stuff.
Did I just watch a 4 minute video of water evaporating from a glass?
We all did
I love the microscopic shots 😸
I wasn't sure if I should include them, but now I'm happy I did
@@PhotoOwlThat was a fantastic decision ❤
Might be an idea to seal the top to stop evaporation and see how the eco system in the jar develops?
You're looking for life in jars, he's done loads of sealed saltwater ecosystems.
yeah it was oddly sad seeing all the micro organisms die off once it got too briney
Or top up with distilled water, which would keep the salinity the same overall
Love this video. The drive to the ocean, seeing the bottle filled, all of it. I felt bad for the little organisms in the water as it started to dry up - but I'm assuming the increased salinity did them in. Loved the microscope footage and the gorgeous shot inside the cup itself. Thoroughly enjoyed this! ♥
I would have liked to see what happens if it was rehydrated. Those organisms have evolved in a location where drying out and then being rehydrated is fairly common. At least some of them must have developed survival mechanisms.
@@mikewilson631tardigrades!
@@mikewilson631 Don't make Photo Owl drive all the way to the sea again.
I just clicked on this video and the determination is amazing
Thank you!
I would loved to have seen the crustaceans that were swimming around on one of the slides, that would have made it even more intriguing. A great time lapse for sure, thank you for doing this!
It was sad seeing that last one hold out till day 30 on its own after the rest died.
I have a question that might have been answered before, but how do they release videos so quickly? Do they have multiple different things going on all at once? If so, around how many things are going on at a given time, and how do they always come up with new ideas? Truly an amazing channel!
It's been asked before, but no problem. Yes, there are several project running at all times. Most of the times at least 15
@@PhotoOwldoes that require 15 fixed cameras?
@@PhotoOwlYou are doing an amazing work,
What a beautiful passion 🙏
Thank you so much for sharing the love of LIFE ❤️˘◡˘❤️
@@nikolastojanovic4201 Worse, think of the wiring mess that would be required to control those 15 cameras and record the associated images. (Maybe it's possible to do via wifi these days though?) Maybe something like a raspberry pi could be used as a controller for each individually or for small clusters of them...
@@jasonpatterson9821it's possible with wifi, but that many cameras on the same network would probably leave you with low quality laggy footage.
Wow that is way more salt than i expected! 😮
Im not gonna lie the view under the microscope was so beautiful i had to pause and just admire it.
That drive through the countryside was very cool. How long of a trip was it? I like the shots through the microscope, too. I couldn't imagine a 40 story building made of only salt.
Google Maps says ~540KM
@@dot1298 it says Vienna is ~540KM away from Sabbiadoro
Fun thing to note is the lack of our most prevalent friend on this channel, fungus. While iirc there are some varieties of fungus that do live in marine habitats, they are in no way extremely prevalent, and in general this video really goes to show the power of salinity to combat microbial life. Very neat.
seriously. you can see all those little critters feeding off the plant, and the water level falling. then there comes a point where the critters just.... stop.
poor little guys.
@@SidShakal - There is more to it than the salinity. One thing that happens in a closed system like this is that bacteria explode and use up all of the oxygen in the water. I would love to see this repeated with an aquarium air stone keeping the water oxygenated. I am betting you would see a much different explosion of life.
@@sam21462 oh, that makes sense too. feels like lack of oxygen would be a preferable way to go than too much salt 😬
That's amazingly well producted content
Thank you so much! I'm happy you liked it!
Lets appreciate that he drove to Italy just to get sea water
This is Oh,so Wonderful❤
Nature is amazing😊.
Thanks for the Fun Fact too:)
Glad you enjoyed it! And thank you so much! :D ❤
I love how everything in Nature is beautiful and interesting.
I live in Southern Coastal North Carolina USA , the salt is terrible for our car engines . Now I see how bad . 😮 Thank you for this video. 🙏❤
Me too!! @amybeck9161
Love the sense of exploration bookending this one--the journey to capture it, and the inquisition of its remains.
I'm Vietnamese but I really enjoy watching your videos, watching each day pass by, it's so wonderful, just like we humans age over time. Your videos are great🥳
This is a great scientific experiment.. I think people will use to video as reference for years to come, maybe teaching young students about science.
Good stuff. Keep up the great work! The dedication is impressive.
That was just beautiful under the microscope!
Those salt crystals are absolutely beautiful and fun to watch form.
the result and timelapse is incredibly beautiful! i loved the microscope part
As always, great Timelapse. Enjoyed the mapping of your voyage to collect the sample, and the gull 😂
Thanks! 😁 I'm glad you liked it!
Wunderschönes Video, danke!
Thank you for your indulgence!
This one is stunning!
💛💛💛💛 such dedication
It was the Life in the glass. You just killed it
I like the idea that he drove to the beach just for the water. No sandcastles, no fun, just seawater.
Very interesting. Thanks for posting.
So much Life in such a small sample
Correction: So much Death in such a small sample.
Wow! You went to Lignano Sabbiadoro! 30 km from my home!👍🏻Good choice!
Super cool, would be interesting to see the difference between two different seas
This channel keeps improving
Thanks. Amazing idea.
Crazy how quickly the water all evaporates away. Amazing video
I can't tell if you're being sarcastic but 2 months is not quick 😭
Very cool. I live in Atlantic Canada on the coast, surrounded by the ocean. It's easy to take for granted, especially in the winter (damn salted roads). Awesome video - Thanks for making the journey :)
Newfoundland ?

Didn't know salt could be this beautiful
loved that you added the water through the microscope. so cool!
Thanks! 😊
Satisfying!
Awesome!!!
Great music, and loved the microscope use
Be honest, you were contemplating catching that seagull at the beginning to turn it into some sort of time lapse.
It'd be a hit lol
"What happens to a seagull in a jar after 100 days?"
Make sure to fine-sift the rest you got in that bottle, boil it and let it dry on a tray. Foodgrade seasalt with all human-required elements: done. (recommend to mix thoroughly with zeolites every few minutes for half an hour to remove unwanted junk (no need to remove the zeolite after))
I like your video very much... Thank you sir 🙏😊
The background music in the first 60 seconds is really good. I could work some magic on it
Definitely enjoyed the microscope part.. thumbs up for that.
Very cool
commitment right there
was kinda hoping to see some halophiles under the microscope but great video as always! it was very interesting seeing how the activity in the water slowed down as the salt concentration increased.
nothing can survive in that salty solution. salt is actually a really good antiseptic.
@@2nmingo considering that there are bacteria that thrive in the dead sea and evaporation ponds, i was hoping there might be some like those. but then again the water looked to be completely saturated with salt so i guess it really shouldn't come as a surprise that there were none there.
If i were not faded, this would not be as amazing as it is.
im really happy to see that u drove to italy just to get a bottle o water... u got our respect!
also i want a timelapse with microscope. no matter what will we look, but it would be better if we watch somerhing dirty.
Thank you! How about blood time lapse in microscope?
@@PhotoOwl it would be cool :D
Yeah! Maybe some dirty pond water with lots of alga 😎
@@PhotoOwl This would be awesome!

How do you feel as a mass-murderer? Poor critters stopped moving due to the high salt concentration. Awesome time-lapse and thanks for your effort! I will definitely revisit the video with my kids (to see the murder too lol).
I must be a psycho because I knew that would happen and I enjoyed that part more than the rest
So....
Do you drink alcohol, eat bread?? What about all the poor, little, fluffy yeasts eh?
that shot around day 70, you could crop and sell prints of. so cool!
I got the impression out of your replies to other comments that the inclusion of the microscope footage was an afterthought. That explains why there was no microscope footage of the seawater at the start of Day 1. It would have been an interesting comparison. The whole video was fascinating. An educational 4mins and 38 secs!
200th comment! awesome vid btw
It looks like you got a second bottle of water. Smart idea, it would suck to go all the way back if you spilled your only bottle.
Hey what microscope do you use? Thanks!
i thought about my whole life and perhaps, the future of humanity whilst watching this clip. thank you for that subtle music too.
You guys should look at evaporating ponds. They fill large, shallow ponds with salt water where it evaporates off and leave salt for commercial production. Of you've even had seasalt, it probably came from one of these.
Well that was clean
You don’t really realize how much salt is in the ocean until you actually see it.
Same!
So cool
Thank you!
simplesmente lindo
That's cool, wonder if different ocean's have different outcomes, or water from the middle of the ocean rather than from the shore.
3:15 that "x" thing looks really good 🔥
Cool. I didn't know they built spaceships on Italian beaches
Right On way Cool
This is my favorite video you’ve made by far! Do you think you could do an Oreo?
Excellent!
Many thanks!
I wonder what kind of ecosystem is in that water. 💜🐰💜
One thing this planet will never run out of, salt.
i love how crystalized Sodium chloride looks like ice and snowflakes
After a while you can see the activity stop due to the high salinity, i wonder what would happen overtime if you added some distilled water to the mix to counter evaporation
Ligi 😍
It must be fairly warm in your studio. It seemed to evaporate quite quickly.
Poor bugs getting consumed by all that salt, lol
good job man
Thanks :)
Lignano Sabbiadoro, good place.
I'm curious if any of those micro organisms would have come back if you had filled the cup up with distilled water. Some are able to go dormant during a dry season.
you are awesome
Oh, you are Vienna based? Love that city! ❤
Wow, was the room very warm? I didn't know that it would evaporate so quick.
I filmed it during the summer, it was about 25°C-30°C/77°F-86°F in the studio. At the end it slowed down, the temperature was also lower then, plus I think the higher salt content (since a lot of water evaporated) also slowed down the evaporation rate.
Hey Owl, can you make a series with tiktok's food preservation hacks? It would be great to see if they work with a time-lapse. Cheers from Chile!
That salt crystal looks just like a fish 3:30
Beautiful video ◕‿↼ I love it!!! ❤️

Driving over 5 hours and through 3 different countries to get to the seaside - wow
30 mins I can be in Blackpool from where I live ha but I suppose we are both lucky we don't have to drive for days to be by the sea like some people have to.
i take for granted my proximity to a beach often
nice bro i like ur videos
omg
Thank you
Beautiful, but sad when you think about the life that was there, and now its not.
Next time a recipe calls for sea salt, I now know a "quick" way to make my own. 😂
