What if you left a phone in water for a month?

  • The experiment and the stream ended at 745 hours, which is 31 days. This is the follow up time lapse video.
Samsung Galaxy S21 kept underwater for 31 days.
I got my SAMSUNG GALAXY S21 5G on January 29th (launch day) and I decided to put it in an aquarium of water to stream the event until it breaks. I can't be the only one who is curious :)
I taped a wireless charger taped to the back of the fish tank, that kept the phone fully charged.
The Samsung Galaxy S21 has an IP rating of IP68 which means it's resistant to submersion up to a maximum depth of 1.5m underwater for up to thirty minutes.
Samsung Galaxy S21 5G water test. Keeping a Samsung Galaxy S21 underwater test.
    UPDATE 1:
As it turns out the stopwatch on the S21 goes up to 99 hours 59 minutes 59 seconds only. When it reached that I had to manually restart it, and the counter started from 0 again.
This many times was the stopwatch restarted: 7 times
Add 700 hours to the actual time that's on the counter.
    UPDATE 2:
The phone gave a "Moisture detected" warning after being submerged for 117 hours and 53 minutes. The screen was unresponsive, and it kept jumping between applications uncontrollably.
After some button pressing now it works fine again, the moisture warning is still there.
    Let's see what happens next.
    Update 3:
At 241 hours and 10 minutes we were about a dozen people watching, and everyone was interested if the speakers still work. I played some music and the speakers sounded terrible, very quiet and barely understandable. At this time the water pressed "Lap", so that's what you can see on the screen now. It stays until the next stopwatch reset.
    Update 4:
OBS (Streaming software) stopped working on day 15 and the stream was restarted.
    Update 5:
At 351 hours 9 minutes a couple of new notifications appeared on the notification bar. I had to investigate and this is the photo I took: imgur.com/UJ1uDTx (backup url: ibb.co/Zczqr52)
These are most likely not related to the water at all. (Note: the phone is not connected to the internet)

Small piece of advice from being in the industry, using gloves (prevents oil barriers, and helps prevent static discharge on micro resistors), and Dollar tree closet desiccant packs in a sealed Rubbermaid with the device, will drastically speed up your time and you don't have to clean up rice dust 🤯 and replace several of the adhesive strips.

What's more impressive than the phone surviving for 31 days underwater, is this guy fixing the minor faults it had, on his own, with minimal effort, and no swapping out any parts. That's one hell of a phone if it can be fixed so simply after so much punishment, where other phones would be out right bricked.

Some of the water damage could have come from condensation since the phone was charging the whole time. Charging creates heat, and in a cool environment like under water condensation will form. Explains the camera failure. Great video. Nice to know my s21 ip68 rating is confirmed.

For the inside of the phone to condense there would need to be a significant amount of air. The inside phone barely has any. Also, while charging produces heat, it wouldn’t be as significant source of heat when compared to a screen that is running. I would place my bets on there being a very small leak which later just evaporated across the phone

      I know, right?!
As a teenager if my phone got damp I had a panic attack… I’d murder someone if they set my phone down on a wet surface or touched it with wet hands..
The other day I dropped my 1800$ phone into a bowl of soup on accident and just washed it in the sink like doing the dishes. I literally thought the same thing… lmao This would have blown my 13yo mind!
I take my phone in the shower to video chat, listen to music and videos, I film the pups in the pool underwater and all on an iPhone with no case on it.
It’s getting close for drops too!
Old iPhones and androids were shattering when you looked at them funny but modern phones can survive absurd amounts of damage! The torture tests on the new iPhones and Galaxies is ridiculous.
Pretty soon we’ll have nearly indestructible phones and that’s pretty cool. I couldn’t even fathom having a phone as high tech, water proof, sturdy, and big as my pro max when I was 13 with my old Nokia and eventually my G1.

I have this phone that got accidentally submerged in water for about 4 seconds. Got it out, turned it off for an hour. Then turned it on for assessment. What happened is the switches (vol and power) responds with a delay but the screen can still be touched. About an hour the switches are back to normal but the screen is gone. Does not respond to touches anymore but on the next day, the touch response is back. May I hear yo guys' input over this?

    • @tyf.4399
      @tyf.4399 2 года назад +15

Modern flagships will not die normally from simply getting wet or submerged as we saw here.
Now, if the screen is cracked, back is cracked (if applicable), or anything is physically damaged that isn't just the frame. You can expect the water resistance to be worse than from the factory.
I work for a technology company and fix phones on the side, delay in button response could be water inside the buttons which won't damage anything assuming the buttons are properly sealed. Replacing the screen would probably fix yours but also inspecting the screen cables for signs of a short or corrosion will help actually diagnose what you'd need to do. We can almost guarantee it got water on the back of the screen meaning I would personally reflow the screen connections on the board to ensure the corrosion doesn't keep forming/fix any current issues with the connections.

    • @tyf.4399
      @tyf.4399 2 года назад +3

@@gypsygypsy_y Depends. If it is working now and hasn't had any issues for a bit I wouldn't be too concerned about it. Not because taking the screen off is dangerous, any competent technician should be able to do it 99/100 times without damaging anything but there is that risk. Mostly because the price you're going to pay for them to simply clean the board and reseal the phone is probably not worth it for most people. If you're phone is more important, maybe you use it for work, etc. Then maybe ensuring the board isn't developing any corrosion is worth it to you so you have a reliable device. But assuming that isn't the case, probably fine for now. But you shouldn't have had any issues in the first place so there is definitely cause for concern for reliability of the device.
Hate to be that guy, but the TLDR is that it depends what is more important to you.
Edit: Just to clarify, doesn't mean that tech is incompetent. Just means he probably assumed you valued money more than opening your phone with no intentions of replacing anything. Both can be valid solutions. Just depends on the customer. The tech may have been completely fine with opening the device, but just assumed you didn't want to unless there was a more apparent issue he could resolve.

putting rice anywhere near a phone will cause more damage, and will not get rid of any of the water damage. The starches and various small particles and grind away traces, and speed up the corrosion process greatly. The best thing you can do is disassemble as much as you can and either put the parts in a vacuum, or in an area with a steady flow of warm away blowing over the wet parts.

Thank you for an idea about isopropanol.
In the Spring my Huawei P30 (has no any IPXX protections) was with me when I got under the rain. It was nice, but after couple hours for some seconds there display matrix was glitching.
On the next day all cameras was fogged. Used rice for ~10 hours, it helped. Then for some monthes I had no any troubles, but in September it starts hanging on when I try to use wideangle camera.
After a week or two, camera app starts lagging and sometimes it was not working. Sometimes reboot was helpful, sometimes wasn't. And a bit later cameras died. The main app was crashing, so I even could not switch to front camera. But in Telegram app it was possible to record some short video-messages (there is front camera always default).
I bought new camera module for 30$, replaced it and... it worked, but there was about 2 seconds between any cameras switching. After a couple hours, it died again. So yesterday I bought new smartphone: S21 Ultra, but it would be excellent if I can resurrect my Huawei. On my opinion there was still better camera then in my new phone.

@@anthonyserna6151 unbelievable. I literally did nothing: just sprayed isopropanol and wiped with old toothbrush contacts of all cameras. Rest of isopropanol wiped with paper, turned my phone on and all cameras just work as never before! Goddammit, so simple and cheap solution, it works like a charm, still can't believe 🤯
So strange, going to see this video just for fun, nothing useful, but accidentally fix my old phone. Author should have a coffee from me 🥳

@@pham3383 that feature is also cool, but I would use them just if they'll have Google services (Google pay the main problem). So P30 is just latest Huawei which has them, but it is perfect enough to be bought again - they're not available to order in Ukraine now
