Everyone seems to have concluded that the ants liked the Coca-Cola because it has more sugar. Actually, it has less sugar. But it tastes sweeter than Pepsi when flat, because it has more salt. The ants preferred Pepsi at the start because it was less carbonated, making it sweeter.
I saw some science question in middle school that showed ants like salty food more than sweet food; no idea if it was accurate since it was a school question, but interesting none the less.
And whats funny is that this makes sense outside of ants as well. Pepsi was made to be drinken cold and out of the fridge, while Coke was made to be drank warm and (likely) flat. The reason for this is that Coke was made before refrigerators were common household objects, and Pepsi was not.

There are a lot of factors that go into an ant’s choice of food. 1. queen(Fertile or infertile) 2.Amount of larvae 3. Amount of ants 4. Type of ant 5. What they recognize as being “food”, because they won’t recognize every food as food by chemical compound alone. 6. Seasonal choices vary for each species but generally they like stickier things because it just barely solidifies and makes the perfect consistency to carry a ton of sugar. 6. Amount of food available or extractable. 7. Higher mineral levels smell good to ants. So mineral level and chemical composition. Fats and sugars are easier to digest and hence more popular overall while not effective as a stored foodsource, if you can even carry droplets of melted candy. 8. Position. Worker ants tend to prioritize other kinds of ants more than themselves or others in their role, since it’s their job to work for the good of the colony, they will choose foods that are easier to carry in large quantities. Whereas soldiers prioritize their own nutrients, and prefer to drink rather than eat for the sake of saving time from guarding the colony, rather than paying attention to how much they can carry they want quick sips of sugar and such, as I found. 9. Environment. Stress, weather, difficult circumstances, or even queen’s pheromones based on her own needs. 10. Where the pheromones are strongest and most recent.
It's not about having enough force to break through the surface tension, but rather the fact that the surface will just move out of the way where the ant tries to apply its force because of the tension. Try pinching a sufficiently inflated and large balloon between two fingers. As you try to move your fingers in place the surface is pushed away by those fingers not leaving anything to pinch anymore. So, I agree that surface tension might play a role in an ant's decision to take on one or the other droplet.
They DID go to Pepsi more. At least, until they harvested enough sugar from it that it was indistinguishable from Coke, at which point they went to both, until eventually gathering all of both. They completed Coke first likely because it still had more sugar due to the previous harvesting of Pepsi's sugar. They don't care about the difference between the colas, other than knowing which one has more sugar.

The results might in part be stochastic, as the ants leave a "trail pheromone", potentially amplifying the slightest random offset in the beginning. This experiment would need far more replicates.
I find it interesting that during the first hour they went for the Pepsi and after that they greatly preferred the Coke. I guess ants aren't into carbonation.
They're designed to seek out sugar as an energy source. Carbonation doesn't really have any benefits for them so that makes sense that they go toward where they sense "more" sugar.
to me at 1:24 there's this smaller ant that gave me the idea of only checking what were they, (like an official inspector) since it analyzed both and went back to report. A little later they preferred coca cola
The real test would be McDonald's sprite. I'm guessing any ants that survive first contact will develop super powers. Just a theory though. I was going to test it, but I havent thought of a line as poetic as Oppenheimer's "I am become death, destroyer of worlds." to express my deep regret over making super-ants, so.... 🤷♂️ You're all safe. For now.
Interesting once. Do it multiple times with randomization of placement and it turns into data that can be used to make hypotheses that can then be tested.
Ants lay pheromone trails behind to lead other ants to food sources. Thus, a small random difference in the number of ants choosing one soda over the other in the beginning, creates a snowball effect over time. You have to repeat the experiment many times to see if ants indeed prefer one soda over the other.
if you do, then it's due to open/ accessible food for them somewhere &/or the crumbs or foodstains left behind (& even for me a person who barely uses their kitchen area somehow it gets dirty all the time, gotta stay on top of it & thankfully that part they've never shown up in) smth is calling them via their scent-sensors, which has happened to my TV "sitting area" a few times cuz it's riight next to a ground flr window & one of their explorers discovered where I keep my things meant to be accessible for me 😅 but they will move on once the biggest attraction is not reachable to them anymore so try some traps etc too ☆
@@non-sniper The test would be required to be repeated to see if the order is consistent. At this point it could just be random and meaningless. A test with flat pepsi and coke would determine if it is just the carbonation that deters them.
Exactly. One test could be a coin flip. They just randomly chose one side slightly more often. If you put two drops of the same drink next to each other one would be finished first. Meaningless if its not repeatable and predictable.
@@Zector01 I would hate for somebody to design a bridge I needed to drive my car across based on a "there definitely would be." with out data to back it up. I think what you meant to say is there would likely be a correlation.
It's really cool to see how hard the ants have to work to break something as seemingly meaningless as the surface tension of both the colas. At a scale so small, being submerged is a death sentence, like being stuck in goo.
It should be done with more drops of each one. I mean, you should put like 10 separate drops of Pepsi and 10 of Coke and see if they drink all the Coke first or if it's 50-50.
Correct me if I'm wrong but, i think i noticed most leave towards the northeastern side of the screen Could this mean that wherever they're depositing the sugar is on that direction thus making the Coca the closer alternative? Not 100% sure but it really looks like there's a much higher traffic on that side from the beginning
Very interesting! Would've bet Pespsi to be the favorite because it always tasted so sweet, compared to Coke. (As kids we were like ants too, drinking tons of the stuff. 🥤😜)
I assume they drank the Cola faster because it has way smaller bubbles and thus less carbonation than Pepsi meaning it's easier to digest for their small insect bodies
It may look like they preferred coke but no, if u left them for a little longer they would have finished both. To really know u gotta do this multiple times, changing positions, and with more colonies and more species.... The only thing this shows is ants would take both
I get you, but they were trying both at first, so the only reason they would stop drinking Pepsi altogether is they liked Coca-Cola better, it may have to do with the carbonation or the sweetness but I think they clearly liked Coca-Cola better at the end
@@kbin7042 yeah that's the result but the certainty of it is very low, if it was done multiple times and the result is the same i would guess maybe it's the sugar level or caffein level difference or maybe coke tastes better.. i prefer coke to pepsi btw

Interesting once. Do it multiple times with randomization of placement and it turns into data that can be used to make hypotheses that can then be tested.
I was gonna say it would be funny if they eschewed both of them and went for some root beer instead.
Ants are one of my favorite critters, lol. Very intelligent and strong. I love watching them. This was interesting.
I love how they take little bites out of the water 😂
Ants lay pheromone trails behind to lead other ants to food sources. Thus, a small random difference in the number of ants choosing one soda over the other in the beginning, creates a snowball effect over time. You have to repeat the experiment many times to see if ants indeed prefer one soda over the other.
This is the sort of video you run into when you should be sleeping
2:55 in the morning, you are correct, sir.
Why do I think I have a ton more ants lounging in our kitchen countertop in any given day than in that test? Lol
it's not like those are made in a kitchen, the ants that appear in these are placed there
if you do, then it's due to open/ accessible food for them somewhere &/or the crumbs or foodstains left behind (& even for me a person who barely uses their kitchen area somehow it gets dirty all the time, gotta stay on top of it & thankfully that part they've never shown up in) smth is calling them via their scent-sensors, which has happened to my TV "sitting area" a few times cuz it's riight next to a ground flr window & one of their explorers discovered where I keep my things meant to be accessible for me 😅 but they will move on once the biggest attraction is not reachable to them anymore so try some traps etc too ☆
It would be interesting if you could do this several times and see if there is a correlation between the order of preference.
wtf
@@non-sniper The test would be required to be repeated to see if the order
is consistent.
After I carefully examined the footage, the ant species in the video is Camponotus Nicobarensis
What does that mean?
🤓
Thanks

First day of ants drinking coca cola and pepsi
Their Dentist must be a Happy man!
Pay close attention you can see their abdomens grow larger as they drink. I don’t think people could tell the difference if not for a magnified view
I'd would love to see this as a real ad.
It should be done with more drops of each one. I mean, you should put like 10 separate drops of Pepsi and 10 of Coke and see if they drink all the Coke first or if it's 50-50.
0:33 "What are you DOING man!? This one is WAY tastier, look!"
Being an ant 🐜 I can confirm that I like coke over Pepsi😂
I'd prefer Pepsi
i just love the way it smells.. oh shit same word different meaning
What would ant man say?
i luv ants
imagine it it was mosquitos😡🤬
Diabetes likes you too
Correct me if I'm wrong but, i think i noticed most leave towards the northeastern side of the screen
Could this mean that wherever they're depositing the sugar is on that direction thus making the Coca the closer alternative?
Not 100% sure but it really looks like there's a much higher traffic on that side from the beginning

Very interesting! Would've bet Pespsi to be the favorite because it always tasted so sweet, compared to Coke. (As kids we were like ants too, drinking tons of the stuff. 🥤😜)
I feel like this video is gonna blow up someday
Thanks and...hope so
My sence of humor is so broken that i was laughing so Bad when i saw that he put "pe" and "coca", it just looks so cute that is hilarius
I couldn’t agree more with the ants. Pepsi only if there’s no other option.😂
I assume they drank the Cola faster because it has way smaller bubbles and thus less carbonation than Pepsi meaning it's easier to digest for their small insect bodies
like they would fucking know that, sugar is sugar

Pepsi - official drink of "No, we don't have any Coke, is Pepsi fine?"
Looks like they originally had a thing for Pepsi, then realized coca cola was right next to the pepsi
I must say that is one cool video to watch. so interesting!!
It may look like they preferred coke but no, if u left them for a little longer they would have finished both. To really know u gotta do this multiple times, changing positions, and with more colonies and more species.... The only thing this shows is ants would take both
You're a Pepsi drinker, admit it!
@@mr_happygolucky7095 i'm actually a sprite guy
@@babab_m My guy
I get you, but they were trying both at first, so the only reason they would stop drinking Pepsi altogether is they liked Coca-Cola better, it may have to do with the carbonation or the sweetness but I think they clearly liked Coca-Cola better at the end
@@kbin7042 yeah that's the result but the certainty of it is very low, if it was done multiple times and the result is the same i would guess maybe it's the sugar level or caffein level difference or maybe coke tastes better.. i prefer coke to pepsi btw
The ant equivalent of the RUclipsr with a raccoon testing human chips.
at first they found it difficult to absorb carbonation because it was just being released and over time the carbonation disappeared because of the air and finally they easily absorbed it unlike the beginning
I bet it quench their thirst as best though.
The movement of the soda it looks like jelly. It was even funny playing music when the ants are moving and feeling the beat with their antenna. Yummy! 😋😀🙂😊
Vampire Weekend "Harmony Hall"; you're welcome
i like how the ants preferred the coca cola over the the pepsi because theyre cool and have good taste and when it ran out they drank the pepsi like when you ask for a coke in a restaurant and youre told they only have pepsi so you settle for that instead
lol
more like when they're out of iced tea and I have to drink either one . . .
This is so real 😂

"Makro-fun fact"...Now it's clear why Colas go with burgers. because they look exactly the same 0:40
I like how they were sharing with each other ❤
No matter which they like best, they DON'T WASTE FOOD... That is the best lesson to learn... and they share it all: another important point
The ants knew about that peso contest situation so they chose to prefer coca cola instead
