Peerless 700 Racing Mower Transmission

  • Lawnmower racing season is right around the corner, time for the janticjournal to get in gear. This video is about what we do to get a Peerless 700 mower gearbox ready to race. Using shiftable lawnmower transmissions is required for most USLMRA and ARMA divisions. The Peerless 700 has a big advantage over a transaxle since you have more flexibility in the axle, hubs and sprockets you can use. The oil seal to switch from grease to gear oil as well as sprockets and other performance parts can be found at eccarburetors.com/.

    A mechanics trick for permatex on machined surfaces with no gasket is to spray a coating of automotive primer on the surfaces. Let it dry then put your permatex on. The primer bonds to the metal and gives the permatex something to bond to. Good information in the video!

    I like your videos because you are the only guy that records and shows different steps of building the mower and what needs to be done in order to do certain things!!!
    Im building a race mower too my mower is just going to be set up for a different style of racing

    Bentonite grease is required for most belt drive walk-behind mowers I've run into. That type of grease works great because like this guy says they are not sealed up super tight and bentonite grease won't get ruined if any water get into the case. It is also not compatible with other types of grease so be sure to remove it all! For mower racing how about thinner syn gear oil or even syn motor oil? Cool video thumbs up!

    Helpful hint about the peerless oil seal for input shaft, on an 800 transmission I measured the input shaft housing diameter at 0.875, the input shaft is 5/8 so one can find an oil seal for shafts. Because the 800 seal is not at a low position where oil would easily drip I used a few thrust washers and other washers to take up slack and tighten tolerances between the pulley and the housing, I removed the middle c-clip because I thought it tended to damage the surfaces.

    The reason the one bushing was seized onto the shaft is because it looks to be the "steel" bushings that came in some of the 700s they heat up really quick a seize to the shafts, I always swap them out for the bronze bushings, I would highly suggest finding a set of bronze bushings to replace them!       TheJanticJournal I just saw that and cringed because I've ruined two 700s because of those bushings, good luck during racing season, try and get some videos of you racing!

    Tip. While pushing the input shaft back in from the top after fingering in all the grease... plug the underside with your thumb/finger on the other side and spin input shaft slowly with firm pressure while inserting. This will cause the grease you put in to be forced into the needle bearings. The two bearings often will eat a good finger glob or two into the needle area.

      Add a grease fitting for the input shaft too, they don't get much splash lube and could use the help.
      Saw that tip years ago and used it on an 801 and a mst-206

    I filled mine with "000 grease", which is a semi-fluid at room temp, so it's like 1000w oil. Found at Tractor Supply & Thiesens, also sold as "Corn Head something".
    I also turned my Peerless 90°, so I could use a hoizontal shaft engine (connected with a chain & centrifugal clutch).
    That makes the "seal" between the case halves vertical, and I didn't use any sealant. 3 years since I filled it, it's still full, no leaks (at all) on my (concrete) garage floor.
    There is no need to glue the cases together if you use the "oil" it's supposed to have!

    Just replaced mine on a wright walk behind mower, it’s a 5 speed. I have no luck when it comes to settling a speed it makes this noise like if the inside was falling apart. Any info will help thanks.

    Hi! What could be wrong with the Peerles 700 5 speed
    When the machine is running, it doesn't go overboard and shake the gear stick
    What could be wrong and where can I get parts ordered in Finland?

    Odd question for a different application of these Transmissions: if you spin the input shaft one way the output shaft turns a certain way. If you turn the input shaft the opposite way does the output shaft likewise turn the opposite direction? Nice video, thank you very much.

      I haven't vented them in the past but I plan on venting these ones. I have a feeling they vent enough through the shafts and shift lever shaft but I want to make sure it doesn't build up pressure this time. Thanks for the comment btw!

    New needle bearings part number for input shaft on almost all riding mowers of this class is: "INA SCE108"

    I'm thinking about one of these for my go kart but it looks like the input shaft is 90° to the output shaft? So how would you attach both a motor and an axle to that?
    Also, and more importantly, how do you shift? Are these ok to shift under power? Do you have to install a clutch somewhere in your machine?

      Not sure what type of kart ou have or what you're going for with it but most people utilize a belt driven CVT or "torque-a-verter". These gearboxes can't be shifter under power, they will grenade themselves. Learned that lesson several times over lol

    I have a peerless 832 transaxle and have removed all the grease and want to put oil in how do I find out how much oil goes in

      You just want to add enough oil to fully cover the input bevel gear.

    Do you know where I can get one of these for cheap? I got a free cub cadet 1315 from a friend and it has a 12.5 that i got running and I want to build a fast mower for fun as cheap as possible. It has a peerless 920 transaxle in it but I don’t think it will hold up.

    Can I do this to my commercial lawn mower I use to put food on the table....seem like my transmission is always giving out do to the grease..I want to use gear oil instead of that grease crap....lemme.know thanks !! And also do u leak alot of gear oil from the 700 ?

      Hmm, I'm not sure how that would work out. My transmissions usually dont leak unless the mower is tilted to one side, it will sometimes drip out of the output shafts when tilted. The good thing is you can always squirt in more gear oil unlike grease where you kinda have to open it up.

      The most it could do is probably 40. But going 20 on a stock makes it heat up quickly

      I have a local scapyard with a big mower section. I usually pay around $25 to pull one myself. Planning on going with stronger aftermarket transmissions for this season though

    I'm wanting to get into lawn mower racing sometime but I have to be able to race on weekends but because I hold down two jobs that I'm not getting rid of and I will be at the racetrack plenty but I wont be able to do it every weekend I'll have to take some time off from it on certain weekends I'll need training but I live in Florida so is there practice runs and training days in every state all I need to learn is power slides witch won't take me much to learn and does that transmission got reverse because I saw the shifter slot for that if it's still there

      We take the reverse out. There's a chain inside that is the reverse gear that we remove so it doesn't break and destroy everything else inside.

      We remove reverse and all the parts associated with it. Less things to break and go wrong.

    Do these peerless transmission need a clutch to shift gears?

      Yes and no, you should never shift them under power. It's a quick way to destroy them, I know that from experience... twice lol. However to change gear or to put the gearbox in gear you do have to use a belt disengagement style clutch. Hope this answers your question.

    Hi Great info. I have a Peerless 700 on a SCAG walk behind that has 2nd and 3rd gear not working. I am going to open it up. Based on what I see from your video all gear should be not engaging not just 2 of the 5. Ill see over the wekend when I get it out of the mower. I am wondering if you have a spare tranny you would sell me if necessary? I am only finding new ones to purchase that are pricey. I would give you a fair price. Let me know. thanks Vince

      I found one used at a mechanic's shop, in the scrap yard. Swapped the lower case onto my gears and top. It had oil in it, so I'll add a vent and oil it up. Lots of 200-dollar options out there because the racers, but my mower has to cut. Saw a couple of videos and jumped in. May be mowing again tomorrow.

      Right now I'm running 15 tooth front and 40 tooth rear in 3rd gear for the small tracks we race in.

      I fill them up enough to cover the input shaft and gear before putting the top case on.
