You're so brave! Putting what you think is a failure out there is incredibly scary! I couldn't do that, I just bury them on my hard drive :). I am enjoying your channel lots of great info and thoughts on the creative process. Keep it up. PS. I was involved in making that prop for GITS at Weta Workshop, alot of people were involved in making the Geishas. The inside panels have some crazy details which was alot of fun to make.
Wow so happy I have access to classes like this. It seems like you two have such a wealth of knowledge, you could probably make videos for years and years and still have new things for me!
Special note for you Blender fans: Just about anything you can do in Substance can ALSO be made in Blender with nodes and proper knowledge, but since Substance is paid and more high end, it just makes the workflow easier. Grant Abbitt I think was one who compared the two to see if one was better, but he said other than ease of use in Substance, you can make the same things with the same detail :) Also add-ons also exist in Blender to automate some of the more cumbersome steps and make things easier :) I am just jumping in here because I know people will inevitably be like, “WAHHH ITS NOT BLENDER” if you follow this video and learn about the different texture maps, they are universal in just about every 3D software :)
For procedural stuff, Substance Painter is great! For anything hand painted, I've always found it to be a nightmare. Do you guys have to deal with that annoying "alt" "cntr" pop up when painting with a tablet? If not, how did you turn it off and keep pen pressure working?
0:55...never knew about that face color chart until recently. Need to see if they got one for the whole body...not sure how to properly Google that one tho... Edit: should've waited till the end...
How would you go about displcement from something like texturXYZ? I'm a student, even though I have acces to mari at school, I do not have access to it at home. Was just wondering
Can we get a tutorial on dark skinned people? Skin is different by race and locations and literally every 3d tutorial about skin is demo'd on caucasian people with the same yellow, blue, and red zone stuff. Skin is way more complex than that and there are plenty other ethnicities. But thanks for putting this stuff out. It's just that every character artists do isn't caucasian and when I see pros artwork of dark skinned people, I'm always wondering how they nail it when it's not much information on it if at all.
I agree. A lot of the photo realism I see in games looks similar. I'm curious if some developers are experimenting with game engine render settings for certain materials. A semi-realism. Dishonored and Bioshock Infinite come to mind, but I wonder if it has more to do with the stylized character designs.
it looks smooth/stylish and i guess its lacking of more detailed normals/micro surfaces. so its like cartoonish more than the title says realistic. Also subsurface is another key part which is missing here. good vid tho, keep goin.
This may be the most useful video of yours I've ever watched, Thanks a lot!

Wow. I got what I'll need soon before I even started looking. Now a word about SSS, reflection and bump maps would be nice.
You are great, really useful videos for artists.
awesome video!!!! this is going to help a lot of people!! including me😀😀😀
Thank you Alex! Happy to hear :D
Would love to see a video detailing the height/normal maps for realistic skin as well. I have been having a lot of issues with those.
Would also love to see this.
It's done in zbrush using alphas. Check out their skin kit.
Gracias Profesores virtuales :D, ayudan a mucha gente 😊❤️
Will you show on how to set up a skin shader properly with SSS and all the other magical stuff.
Yes want to see a ton of substance painter tutorials especially on photoreal skin. Is it useful for that or Mari is still the king?

Nice one
regardless of software, except you can't do it in blender right? Thnks, gotta get me some Substance!

And which brush you prefer to paint the model with red ?
Solid! Can you showcase even more on prepping textures in photoshop? :)
Gonna apply these techniques to my stylized characters and see what happens
I just did an stylized bust. i wish i would have seen this video before
Haha...I can't help but to give em blue or green skin...

The thumbnail just looks two different materials, the before wat before you changed the material?
But what about the body??
Its really exactly the same concept :)
