- The job of the Dungeon Master can be a demanding one, we know, encompassing the role of director, storyteller, and (as some might see it) thankless antagonist pitted against the heroes. In the following video, we explore the gaming lives of five DMs running campaigns in Seattle and New York-looking at how they got their start and how they DM now.
Was good till they all gave in to 4th ed and bashed the past rules
15, and currently trying to create a ragtag group of adventurers. There is hope my friend.
LOL THE LIGHTNING SPELL GUY FTW
A whiteboard is a DM's best friend, in my opinion.
Lovely ideas
We use Lego-Miniatures for the Characters and important NPCs and dice, coins or other objects for Monsters ;)
I agree but I use the minis because if didn't my school wouldn't have it's own club for it but I have played with nothing but die paper and pencil
@shawt192 I have been playing D&D over Skype for over a year. It works extremely well.
Dude with the paper cutouts seems a bit ocd...hell most games we don't even use mini's!
Love the vids though!
I love this video but when the guy is like "Here's something you can do when your completely broke." I lol'd. Why?
When you're completely broke, you get out coins to put paper on and write on it.
How do you have coins if your broke?
LOL
Where can I download the character sheets you are using?
superstar pose 3:27 - 3:29
Too much information is never good. I'm running Dark Heresy at the moment and my players have done every mission so far, but avoided doing them in a my intended manner. They split the party into 5 components. My god.
I have never used published adventures as well.
As for Matt the so called DM, a lot of his views are pure tripe. "You don't need to be original, you almost don't want to be original. You want to be familiar." translates to Not wanting to be creative or imaginative, which is why I can see why they love 4th edition.
is it possible to get james's exel sheet ... ill take anything a link ...email ....something i dont care i really need that sheet
They look like real medieval people lol
lol i use a 300 year old chess peice as my mini
Watching this because Sunday is my first time DMing, with a module I wrote no less...
These guys are wrong about having to be too prepared. I wing it most nights and just go with the flow the players want. I'm really good at making up elaborate backstories on the fly, NPC names, and NPC stats though.
I'm stunned by the level of preparation and organization with Excel sheets, pdfs, and minis. I thought I was organized with my binder! ;-)
If you're completely broke use money as miniatures?......
Ok seems ligit
I used board game pieces for my first minis, and my DM used wire connectors with numbered labels for monsters. And we never used scenery. Except for our BattleTech campaign, when we used minis and a large table full of scenery. Over the years, I've found minis are one of the least important parts of the game, no matter how cool they are or how much we love them. I never even got around to learning to paint them, tho I always wanted to.
It's easier finding a game than you might think.
This video shatters the presumption that D&D ppl are smart; I find aspects of the ppl featured very interesting.
It is dumb if you play with a dumb DM, but the tactics can be pretty rich and complex. As a fan of 4th, I am not afraid to say that 4th is mostly tactical, but you can still role play in it. Now it is true that 3rd edition has a lot more rules, but it does not make 4th edition dumb down. I say you should try both editions and stick with the one you like, but it is like comparing apples to oranges. Both are Delicious but in a different way.
The minis part made me look over to my DM kit. Because I'm in school I like it to be portable so I can dm no notice games, so I have a vinyl grid map and markers, a binder with lined, blank, and grid paper, a burlap pouch with dice, beer bottle caps (mutlitple type numbered), plastic bottle cap rings, and a deck of cards. All this can be tossed into my bag with enough space for my laptop, textbooks, and randome other stuff.
don't worry i'm 17 and have started getting a group together in an almost fantasyless country, in a school where nobody i know plays it and everyone thinks its too nerdy. ive got 5 players as it is now. and am trying to get a 6th in but he isnt available when we play usualy. we are really just a shambles haaving as much fun as possible with little understanding. but we are enjoying it more every time as far as i have seen. the next generation is not lost yet!
@147brisingr I'm in the newer generation, and I have 5 or 6 friends who play D&D, but there's not many people who actually enjoy RPing, as it's "nerdy" and "idiotic." a huge part of the new generation enjoys Call of Duty and Halo too much to focus on things like this. I'm trying to get my school to have a club after school for D&D, but that's about all that can happen, sadly. The new generation needs to focus on real games again.
@mikper7 With 4th Edition, I (as DM) have my laptop sitting next to me to reference anything off the DDI compendium (items, monsters, etc), as well as references to maps for me to draw onto the battlemat on the table. Character Builder (old one, not the new online one) loaded incase they decide to visit shops. Currently we're running one of the Modules out of Dungeon (Scales of War), but otherwise I run homebrew.
@147brisingr
I think if they can transfer the experience well over to a online format that it will have a long future. Right now, I dont think model, books etc sales will increase that much. I dont play other DnD games than those on PC, but since titles like Arcanum and the first Fallout series I have to admit I miss those "less action" oriented rpgs. Where story and interaction was more interesting. DnD does character interaction, because of the DM, better than any game could.
I'd love to play a 2nd or 3rd edition campaign with my friends, sadly like most d&d parties we hardly play due to jobs and studies and we only have 4th edition because its all we could afford. Not to say its not fun when we do play mind you.
Its just time, money and our own experience with the game seem to be against us -.-
@Chibichibipause Try the Virtual Tabletop on DnD Insider if you can afford a few dollars a month - it's totally worth it. Comes with access to all DnD stuff and materials for 4th edition EVER made - except for campaign settings and such.
Or, you can always do instant messenger. I've run games that way and it works. Or RPOL.net, or Rondak's Portal.
@147brisingr
I'm 17, my sister is 19, and here friends range from 19-25.
They play D&D 2-3 times per week, with 4-9 hour sessions a time.
I played my first game today (10AM till 9PM :P), and next year I will join their Students Society to play with them :)
So this next generation is playing, and I'm addicted already :)
(From a 39 year old dude who hasn't played since 1982...and even then, despite owning the old school Basic and Expert sets, I didn't play much) How do you play now? Do you still use modules, or is everything home brew ? What role do computers play? I'm suddenly intrigued as hell, as I peruse a copy of the 3.5 Players Handbook.
Some of the best D&D games I've ever played were run by people who have never run a game before. And if they have played, they had a very crude grasp of the "rules". The games were raw, and there was never any fighting over the rules. What the DM says goes. And they were way fun.
@scotchtapeinasia If you are playing as an adventurer and not DM, then you shouldn't have to worry about it. Most likely your whole group is gaining shared experience and levels together, and your DM will let you know. Each monster has a set amount of experience that it gives.
@147brisingr well i am interested in D&D, of course i am new to the game, but there are to many people who mock nerds and geeks because they are (to be nicer) idiots with no imagination who, by the looks of it, do not plan on playing D&D like i plan on hopefully playing it
I never use published adventures. Love creating my own games and I don't really think it takes that much time. The HARDEST part of D&D is actually getting your group to meet. When everyone's got jobs or school or both it gets challenging fast.
you might, just go to a local gaming store and ask the workers there. they might know somethign to help you. or just be annoying on things like facebook and post video's or something about D&D and someone might come to you.
@arkaziel Cool, thanks my friend. So I should be perusing the 4th edition Players handbook? I am currently shooting to get through 10 pages a day of 3.5...but if no one plays that anymore (are they that different?)
We used first edition the books with the sometimes crappy artwork and almost never used miniatures if I were to get back into it I would want to go old school you can keep filthy 4th edition ect ect
@147brisingr Unfortunately, the next generation already doesn't care about D&D. Their reasoning? Well why play that when games like Dragon Age have so many choices!? I love video games but come on.
Theres been times where my friends didn't have dice, miniatures, or hardly a map. We just used our imagination and that was all we needed to stay up for a good 4 hours and play it on-the-fly ^.^
I play without minis (3.5 edition)
Do minis make the game easier, I think it would be more of a hassle (I can take the work but I'm not very time organised) having to deal with range and maps?
@147brisingr I'm 13 and not that kid with no friends to 5 friends. I think D&D is awesome, and just need to watch some regulars play. I think DM'ing is just as, if not more, fun than playing.
Can anyone share a monster spreadsheet like the one on the video? I'd like to make my own adventures for my party but I struggle with what creatures to include in each encounter ..
hey cool advice on the initiative cards! we usually have a problem with remembering initiatives at my table but not anymore it would seem! such a simple yet effective idea! thanks!
As some one whos soon to DM there first game and does not happen to have a lot of money for minis and I love the idea of using chess pieces as player minis. Thanks!
I like the idea of cutout minis. The minis they sell are balls ass expensive. Saw a dragon for like 200 bucks once... The game was never supposed to be so commercial... ;/
@147brisingr Just for the record, as part of the next generation, we play plenty of D&D, Pathfinder and the like, you guys did a good job of hooking us :P thanks very much :D
@147brisingr Yeah i'm 13 and i'm starting to get into Dungeons&Dragons and trying out DMing but as far as i know NO ONE ELSE in my school plays D&D so yeah :(
i'm 14 over a period of 3 years i've scraped together 3 different groups including about 14 kids my age that i dm for at least once a month each
@MajorLeagueDoorKickr try not to be so critical. it's cheaper to play that way than to spend $2 on a common miniature. or $10-$40 for a set.
I like how that girl states there's 4 guys in the corner playing D&D together and she feels bad for them because they have no friends. wat
@pandaviewer1997 were you live? i might be interested my group stopped because people kept no showing stopped showing and showing again
@147brisingr rest assured , im 13 and me and my friends have been playing dnd for about a year now , we dont plan on stopping :)
Hey...i love looking at others ideas and creating my own. Do you think you could put a link in the description. Thanks! :)
While we were in university, we were so broke that we used our own dice for our characters and monsters. :-)
4e feels so dungeon crawl orientated and when I dm I prefer to weave the story more so than anything else.
OMG!! What at your resources for the paper minis? Any tips, ideas, links? :) Thanks. love the videos!
(3.5e D&D) Mindblast(feat) Prereq.: Int 15; 60 ft. long cone, stuns victims for 3D4 rounds; (Will DC 17)
They are not hardcore, they are just clinging to the old edition because that's what they grew up on.
Get DDI. 60 bucks a year and all the tools are at your disposal, updated.
Most of a DM's prep time should be devoted to creation, not accounting.
yeah hes correct at the end, with my friends we play with dice. thats it just dice.
can anyone send me a letter telling me were I can find and buy those paper minis?
I love dming i prefer to dm actual.:) but i hate the 4th edition.
WOW! I don't suppose you could share where you got the PDFs and the Excel Sheet.
Wish I lived in an area I could just go run a game for a group a people.
wow... anyone know where I can get that Excel sheet he uses for monsters?
what was the name of the home page that was uset to make carekter seds ??
4:07 did anyone else see night goblins from warhammer cus i use them
i feel out of date because i'm playing the white box first edition.
@147brisingr 200+ hours per elder scrolls game is enough for anyone
@jonathangutierrez87
Forward that to me if you get anything :D
I'm next Gen and I plan to begin playing, there is hope yet! :)
Answer to rpg problems: Savage Worlds...just saying :)
Am I the only one that really digs the music in this?
I wished I had friends who like D&D. It's so hard.
@147brisingr True, true greetings from Germany!
man usa ppl you are lucky to have a nice game
@147brisingr sounds like you need to play NWN
How did he make those awesome paper cut-outs?
this is old schoo thats wat i like obout it
Some GOOD tips near the end. Clever ideas.
has anyone considered playing over skype?
looking online always helps.
how can i get his excel sheet? *DROOL*
where can i download your excel sheet
penny arcade shirt
so fucking cool omg
@147brisingr I want to play...
that excell sheet is awesome!
what character sheet is that
Check your local craigslist
I'm part of the 20% I absolutely love miniatures. They're a great visual stimulus. I just wish they weren't so costly.
Cant wait to be my groups dm
How did it go?
i felt like 3rd was too video game-ish
Playing D&D for 10 years. Never played with figures, never played a premaid from the book/comic/shiat campaign. Its pure imagination, u can think about your world and players in it whole day. Thats a DM. Excel table? WTF? USE YOUR IMAGINATION, NOT YOUR PC!!!!!!
Pen & Pencil for life !
