- The job of the Dungeon Master can be a demanding one, we know, encompassing the role of director, storyteller, and (as some might see it) thankless antagonist pitted against the heroes. In the following video, we explore the gaming lives of five DMs running campaigns in Seattle and New York-looking at how they got their start and how they DM now.
i started DnD a little before my 15th birthday. i was told about DnD encounters by a friend who plays DnD. i went along and loved it
This video is awsome...I am addicted to dming our group of just six people and has two dm's and I can hardly wait to get into that dms chair when I am away from it. Sounds like you overcame great objections too get your group two work Kudos and keep playing
Personally I love DM'ing, I've DM'ed for 90% of playing. I like being able to provide everyone with an adventure. With twist and turns in the story that leave them guessing till the very end. It really becomes a matter of, just going for it, my first time was mind breaking. I did way to much material which we covered around 1/4 of it during our session. It is true what most people write here. It just takes time to know exactly how much is needed to run a game, the rest is on the players and you.
Been on my watch list forever. Glad I finally watched it. Never saw anyone tell a girl she couldn't play tho. For us, it was the opposite. Anyone could play, we didn't care, as long as they weren't a-holes.
i just started playing d&d 6 monthes ago, and love playing it!!!!! i wish i would have played earlier.
I love being DM it's as fun as playing for Me, creating worlds and mapping out dungeons. If you have never been DM you are missing out on the fun.
This idea that only dorks or geeks are into D&D fascinates me! It shows how pathetic our society is if people thin this. D&D is one of the most social intellectual and creative activities people can do with each other. Why is it any less cool than poker night? Really sad how stupidity is what is considered cool. I am a 3.5 guy as I believe that is the peak of D&D, yet Gary Gygax AD&D 1st edition is where we should get our inspiration. I say 3.5 or Pathfinder or 1st edition. Thanks Gary!
*****
What the hell are you talking about? In the 80s EVERYONE played and it was not dorky or geeky. It was in mainstream culture, even had a huge cartoon kids would watch on Saturdays. It was mainstream! It didn't become a geeky thing until later on when it stopped being as popular as it once was. Before all types of people would play. Ask anyone age 40 and up about D&D and they will tell you they either played, their friends played or they at least knew about it.
I DM'd around 1984. D&D was in so much mainstream culture it had a hit cartoon that Gary Gygax worked on, kids played with D&D action figures, and the TSR books were sold at bookstores displayed in plain sight like best sellers. Everyone knew about it, of course not everyone played it. But it was so well known, everyone knew someone who played it. The people that played were not considered geeks but intellectuals. The same type of people who played arcade games, skateboarded, listened to Iron Maiden, AC/DC and Metallica and smoked weed. This fear one day D&D will become mainstream culture, you should have more fear that Wizards of the coast doesn't continue to rape the game dumbing it down even further since 3.5, with 4th Edition and now the simpleton 5th edition.

I have better things to do that argue with you. The point I was making that saying D&D is a thing only for geeks, nerds or social misfits did not used to be the case. It was very common for "cool" people or anyone to play it.
Good video, than ks for posting!
It's the same with my group ... there is only one (except me) out of about 10 people we are playing with in differently mixed gaming groups, who even thinks about being the DM. But I like the job quite a lot and have control over when we play and so on, so I think it's okay :D
@skelitalman3 you can easily come up with explanation that doesn't directly reveal a trap later on. for example, "After pulling the lever, you all hear the sound of ancient gear clicking and moving but nothing else appears to happen. Perhaps it was used to move or activate something that is no longer there. Perhaps the lever is a trick to fool adventurers, such as yourselves, into believing either great treasure or great peril was at hand. Or perhaps the lever is for nothing at all..."
Thumbs up for The DragonLance Chronicles. Good vid, too!
It's mostly because of the early D&D advertising. There was a widespread magazine advertisement from TSR that showed some kids having fun in the background with a nerdy kid standing alone holding a D&D kit. The ad read "I don't need friends, I have Dungeons and Dragons." TV ads also portrayed socially awkward kids playing it. A lot of the stigma was self-inflicted. I have no idea what they were thinking.
Oh sorry flarekary didn't realise you were so touchy about the subject but I'd like to see your vastly superior dnd mind in a step maths exam :)
Personally i love to DM which is y i was the first person in my friends to be like "fuck yeah ill be the DM" cause u can control the flow of the game its the best part although sometimes the hardest
you sir made my day.
I love DMing. I even had a band called the DM's. lol
Hey, they actually included negative comments and (very brief) shots of other games. That's damned cool.
I was 12 when I first played D&D.
The best way to learn is to find a group to play in if not just read then books
Great!
Quick Q. I was the dm and I had a lever that triggerd a trap further on in the dungeon. They pulled the lever and I told them it did nothing. they asked why was it there? so I wanted to tell them without reveiling it did something like triger a trap. how do I do that
D&D best game ever!!!!!
@smokenfly514 There is a quick star guide on DnDs website with premade characters and encounter for those just trying to get an understanding. Thats a great starting point, from there go to a local gaming store and pick up players handbook 1. Read through that, and go from there. Ask ppl at the gaming store or use online forums. If you need anything else, PM me. Enjoy!
Me and 9 of my friends started playing recently. Also, why would people post bad comments on a video they knew full well was gonna be about D&D unless they are too stupid to realize it's not another cod gameplay video?
What edition are you playing/ want to play?
As long as you can DM well enough, then I'd might game with anyone.
I wonder if James even undestood what she said as he stood there giggling like a schoolgirl? Not to mention he has to understand that 90% out of a 100% leaves 10%. Not 10% to 20% like he states.
God damm, I just wish I had someone to play with
what a bunch of GEEKS
Thank you. Yes we are.
i like dm its fun me and my friend take turns to dm but now we are geting other people to dm with us and they allso like it
does anybody know of a good way to start learning how to play dnd? It looks brilliant and being the GM looks like my type of thing. But it all looks so complicated and I don't know anyone who knows how to play it :P I played computer games like neverwinter nights etc so I have a fairly good concept of how it works, just need some help learning the rules and that sort of thing.
I'm a DM, the only way it's simple is if your a crappy one.
@refsocrd1 Yeh.....well back in the day for me was 2009.
@jerosmith1983 Really? And i'm sure you can find proof of this. Considering he was brilliant in school and graduated from college early.
I want to get into this but it kind of seems like D&D isn't very forgiving to newcomers.
My friends always make me DM, they say it's because I am the best story-teller, but I doubt that, they are just too lazy to write up their own adventures.
Yeah, its funny how that one woman talks about the losers in school who "didn't have friends" who were in the corner playing D&D... Completely failing to acknowledge that they weren't playing D&D ALONE... They were with their FRIENDS! Maybe not the kind of "friends" she liked, but they were socializing all the same.
pretty much all my friends, family, and even my beautiful gf plays :) this is no longer a "nerd" thing. People are starting to understand the freedom and awesomeness of this game. lucky I love being a DM so woo!!!
I applaud this video's uniqueness, focus, and educational value -- showing the adventure, both as a roleplay hero and as a roleplayer. This video glimpses in on range of people who play, and suggests ways for people who haven't played (or can't find a group) to reach out and find these communities -- an adventure in an of itself.
this series of videos, noah antwiler, chris perkins with the robot chicken guys, and penny arcade before 5th edition, this was my reason for DND, friends, stories and games. I was 13 when i bought the 4th edition PHB, made my first character, and my journey, 12 years later is still going strong. This was an era, where DND was still a mystery to many, where it was this thing you heard and hated, or heard and avoided, or heard and joined. It was this mystery where you heard stories, saw this editing of people talking about playing, this was my favorite time, where you needed to experience the game or seek out these niche as hell videos to try and experience it. Now you just turn on CR or any other actual play and their good, great, but just not the same. Back in ma day, you had to really want to play, to play dnd.
That New York guys attitude is completely wrong. Not everyone should be pushed into DMing. It isn't for everyone.
Otherwise, great video. One of the best I've seen on YT.
I don't get why people (like my parents) think DnD is an antisocial game... My brother sits in front of the Xbox by himself for hours on end. I sit at a table with six of my friends for hours on end... Who's being more social?
@niceshotjones I've gamed with a lot of female players. I don't see anything odd about it. There is a increasing female fan base for rpgs.
How to incourage DM's? I thought about that for almost 15+ years and I am almost there.... not with the idea but with the result of 100ds and 100ds of hours of high res artwork all for no more than to promote the hobby and geeting "kids" to play together rather than behind screens 30 days till release of Fantiles and no not just statik tiles lol (sorry tuk a lot of courage to tell you this cause I am a fan, lets see if I can realy help... 30 days only 30 days
these players seem really old school. treasure and monsters and dungeons galore. they play it like a video game. i always think of roleplaying as telling a shared story. inventing characters and a world together and exploring the drama of how those characters and that world interact. the world can be anything from stone age to space travel and the characters can be anything from farmers to politicians. not everyone has to be a warrior and not everything can be solved with violence.
I recently got into in (2 years ago) and started with 4th edition. I now have been the DM for the past year in our home group. That said, I would say the biggest help was actually a podcast called "Critical Hit." Listen to that, but make sure you start at episode 1. It gives you a good idea on how it works. Otherwise, read the books, go wizard's site, watch videos like this, and have some friends over to experiment just going for it. The new Red Box is a great introduction as well.
I've been playing D&D since I was 10. Most people poo-poo it because they don't understand it. They think it's weird and antisocial. On the contrary, it's a great way to meet people and get people together to have fun. I met some of my closest friends playing the game! I also love the creative aspect of it. As a DM I love to create things for my D&D game using Photoshop.
LOL!!! i just bought the 2010 REBOX and if anyone can help me get started PLEASE IM me or reply..I am going to see if i like DnD and if i do i am going to start a DnD group in my town..we used to have one but that was back in the early 90's. it is dead here in NM haha.. well i wana be DM.. i love telling stories haha
To learn my teachings, I must first teach you how to learn.
He who questions training only trains himself at asking questions.
When you care what is outside, what is inside cares for you.
Your temper is very quick, my friend. But until you learn to master your rage your rage will become your master.
There you have it, Quotes from Mystery Men's own Sphinx to answer your question. Now go out, buy the bloody books and read them. That's how we all learned to play the game. Oh and Have Fun.
Oh yeah, one more thing. If there is a DND encounters shop near you, check that out. It is basically a pick up game at a store that anyone can go to. Great experience, even though it can be overly combat oriented at times
I think that guys attitude towards club members who only want to play is a bit harsh. Not everyone want's to DM a game. Some just want to be players.
You don't have to be a jerk about it. You are entitled to your opinion, but I play 4th edition and I don't like it when people call it garbage. If you don't like it, that is fine, but we don't need to know that. And if you do, well then be nicer about it, like "I don't like 4th edition" or "I think that 4th edition is not the best. But don't just flat out say it is total garbage.
You can try getting the "Quick-Start Rules" or the new "Red Box" sets. They are good introductions to D&D 4E (4th Edition), of the two, I believe the "Red Box" is the best deal. Around $20 and contains a player's book with a "pick-a-path" solo adventure to help make your first character and learn the basic rules. Then a DM book with an adventure, monsters, and tips for DMing. Also includes tokens, maps, character sheets and dice.
thanks. I will do that. the first Session / meetup is set for the 20th, unless it doesnt work for someone, say, something comes up, ya know.
with the plan for that meet is a humorous movie to sorta get into it, discuss table rules and how to handle disputes, etc, have fun and get into it. I have an adventure thought up, but its extremely flexible. I didnt write a novel for the adventure, I have some of the big things, not much more. I really don't want to shoehorn them into something,
I am a nerd, and proud of it. Played for 6 years, DM'd for 4. Got sick of DM'ing the same people who ran the same type of PC's. Last campaign was against a giant who had slaves, living in a lightless (infravision worked) cave. Little did the players know the giant had broken the slaves and contorted them to be used as living armor. My favorite char. was a human cleric/thief (polymorphed into a halfling for awhile) with Javelins of Lightning as his only weapon of choice. Oh, and his diety? Zeus.
I wanted to play D&D for a while, but after watching a couple videos, it's seems a bit taxing to try and be a DM... I mean all the imagination you have to bring to the table and let others see the light of what you want them to see... I don't think I wanna be a DM. Game sounds a bit difficult to get a hang of, and I would like to play it with people that know what their doing, but I doubt I have any friends that do, lol.
I have never played D&D and am curious to how the actual game play is, Is it anything like Final Fantasy Tactics or Fire Emblem in terms of strategy? (yes I know D&D fans might not like their game being compared to a video game). The thought of a table top version of those games seems intriguing and fun. I'm not an artist, actor, storyteller or even a star wars loving geek but a pure mathematical strategist and was wondering if those kinda people play D&D for that aspect alone?
First of all, very cool Video. Im 22 and Im from Portugal, I started in D&D a couple of years ago and Im a DM. Unfortunatly there are very few people in my country that play D&D but there is a cool social network for D&D players arround the country. The Dungeon Master is the best part in D&D for me, since Im an artist I think that creating a whole world and mazes and adventures it can be very inspired and I think D&D can be counsidered art because Ive seen AMAZING things threw D&D. Have fun ;)
@slitheen I play & love both forms. Computer RPGs are more visually engaging because you see the landscape & monsters around you but I think the drawback is that you are limited to what the programmers/designers have provided for you. You're at the mercy of their storyline and depth & detail of the world they've made. The theater of the mind, however, is limitless. When the momentum gets going in a D&D session you can see everything in technicolor. It's like reading a book to watching a movie.
@TheYella20 There are quite a few of them. D20 Modern, Babylon 5 D20, and there is a Star Wars D20, all of which are based upon the D&D system.
The rules are too much for someone to teach in videos for it'd be hard to understand and the length of time. I learned the rules with my best friend by playing and a lot of the times in someway fucking up. The experience for us makes our session really awesome because we learned the hard way. We'd take our time as we played to read the books and just learn.
A good DM will help a newbie through the character creation and learning process. I've spent WAAAAY too many hours of my life doing exactly that! ;-)
There is a learning curve, but that's the sign of any good game (or any endeavor in life, really). Just don't start as a half-orc rouge. Or a bard. Best to leave bards to those who know what they're doing.
I'm a 13 yeas old and I found it hard to find people playing DnD 'cause everyones on the PC and video games. I've been searching. I can't find people playing. The hardest part is I'm a girl who wants to play but each one of my classmates just care about going out shopping and doing boring stuff. DnD needs better marketing now a days.
DMing is pretty simple. Taking into account basic human nature, the players will hurl themselves (if they haven't killed each other first) at the first potentially gruesom death they encounter. The DM simply points them in the right direction. Try not to save the party from self inflicted stupidity. :) Its more fun that way.
Out of my group of 5 I'm pretty sure that 3 of them (me included) would be happy to take turns being the DM. We've only just started playing but it's going well so far and I'm really enjoying it. One thing I'm finding difficult is to be the bad guy in the game, but not to feel adversarial myself.
It's called Dungeon Master screen and you can find it at D&D stores, i've seen many models in the wizards of the coast site as they release new content, on the counterpart of the screen you will find data useful for the DM :D so it's great, i wish they could sell that in my city.
i've been playing d&d for a little under a year and have been trying to get the hang of being the DM because no one else wants to, but apparently good enough to get eight people playing my current campaign. in short i'm a DM, i'm a nerd, and i couldn't be happier
i use to think dnd was for losers and uncool people but i wouldn't let my friends make fun of them because deep down i thought it was a cool and fun looking game. i still wish i could play but don't have anyone to play with and still don't know how to play. but looking forward to play the game one day.
I always voulenteer to be D and D wif my friends, mainly because the control allows you to be the monsters that ruin your friends. Especially when your friends try to kill themselves instead of let your monsters get them from behind
Who wouldn't want to DM? I mean, I'm really new to d&d but it's something I'm ready and willing to do. I have friends who all want to play and couldn't find a DM. I jumped at the opportunity. Hell, I'm even writting up my own unique module.
I guess I'm old-school D&D, when there were no maps and figurines, it was just paper, pencils, die and lots and lots of imagination. Not cutting down what D&D is now - I respect ALL D&D players - I just miss the old way to do it.
I have 11, but it turns out more people often leads to freaky social interactions. Beholders become gonorrhea, names get corrupted, the group splits into two squads that take part in a fight club in-game, and it just gets out of hand fast.
What if by chance you want to play? Once you DM how do you go back to playing, thats like becoming a rock star going on tour with a million groupies and then going back to your wife, jesus christ man you can never go back to your wife!!
RPG be it D&D, MMO, etc...... teaches one how to think fast, to learn teamwork, to try new ways in solving a question.
in some forms. as in the older paper, pencil/pen, & dice format. it teaches math skills are needed to get thru life in one or more ways.
@JohanssonJ92: Believe me, most of them flipped shit when I said I'd love to DM. As for a god-send... That's debteable. I've picked up a campaign or two but never written one or played a whole one through. :/
TheGoodChap, that is what I am saying! Times change, people don't need to be jerks about how they think version 3.5 is better than version 4. It's fine if they think that, but they don't need to be mean about it.
It's not that people think d&d is antisocial, they think it's for losers. But who do you think is the loser? The 5 people sitting at a table laughing and having fun, or the kid yelling at people on call of duty?
@mariesadler Unless you buy pre-made maps (Wizards of the Coast and several other companies make some pretty good ones) you will have to draw a new map every session (often times you will need more than one).
@edvill82 d20 or 20 sided die is used pretty much for actions example you want to lockpick a door so you roll and if you roll high enough you complete the action. the other ones are mainly used for damage :D.
I love D&D, I have converted 50+ of my friends that were non-beleivers and atleast a 3rd of those are girls. We have an epic campaign planned for the summer, we have 10 players and 2 DMs (which are twins) planning it!
@bastichforhire It's not fair for you to judge them based on what you don't like about what they look like. Ever think maybe they're comfortable with who they are and happy, nice, people?
@dovanian sad that people don't give the game a chance DARN THAT STUPID RUMOR CAUSED BY SOMEONE WHO KILLED THEMSELVES OVER THE DEATH OF THEIR DND CHARACTER(that is how the problems started)
Whaha hard to find people to play with?
I decided to play, asked 10 friends and asumed 5 or less would want to play... Little did I know ALL of them wanted to play! So now I'm stuck DMing 10 people xD
I'm not a nerd, I don't think there's anything wrong with being a nerd (or a jock, or a prom queen, or a weirdo, or whatever), and I play DnD. Vin Diesel plays DnD. Get over it.
i have yet to play. i am the only person in my group who is willing to DM -_-
if only we had a point system...
If you want to learn I have no problem teaching. D&D and TTRPGs are less popular than real games mainly because it relies on imagination and requires plenty dedication.
I hope I will be playing (and has friends to play with) for the rest of my days. I can just imagine me, and my buddies still playing in our old age. Would be awesome.
Nerds can be badass I have a D&D equivalent strength of 16, greater than my 2rd level fighter I am playing. Everyone in my group thinks I could kick my characters butt.
2:50 "4 guys in a corner who you'd feel bad for because they didn't have friends"-(paraphrased). Just think about that sentence for a second and realise how stupid it is.
I really have to say this is one of the much better videos here on youtube for learning about being a Dungeon Master etc and overall Dungeons and Dragons. Excellent video!
@SuperMcmonster lucky bum! i've lived here for ages and still can't find a group to play with. i just recently got a tip that might lead me to a group. -fingers crossed-
I really want to be a DM... problem is that I havent played enough period and i do not know the rules too well... I may join a group up here and try 'er out.
hey. XD Id do that if i werent 17 and in school too. never played before, but i have a group and am gonna start dm ing in a week or so. any helpful tips?
It really annoys me how all of my mates in my class think its really nerdy when they are always talking about cod and have never experienced it themselves.
not to be sexist but girls in dnd is wierd because the way we talk it is very manly and the last time a girl played with my troop we accidentally scared her off
6:58 Those miniatures are from HeroQuest. This boxed, watered-down RPG. Anyone remember that game?
You are a godsent, trust me, for some being DM is scary as hell.
The fact that you love to DM i bet was some serious mana from heaven for your friends!
"I wasn't a geek... but I carried my DM's book in my backpack everyday.'
...Has the meaning of the word 'geek' changed since the 70's and 80's? :D
@RaxynSword Red Box. Its a Good start, $20. then if you and your buds like it, move onto other kits.
@RaxynSword A good site to go to to learn the game, talk to others and look for games is enworld.org
