the greatest D&D experience ive ever had was when the druid in our group decided to use a fire spell in a cave to light his way, he shot it up to the ceiling, causing thousands of bats to start burning and since he was the only druid there, he heard all of the bats screaming and went completely insane. it was epic

4e is still my favorite D&D edition. Developers gave their heart and soul to make a good and balanced edition with 4e, they put so many efforts in it, improving it over time, and players mocked it for no reason. They still wanted to play 3.5e, they wanted an upgrade and not a new edition (3.5 was a quite short life edition, many had just bought the manuals and did not want to buy them again for 4e), that was the real problem, not the edition itself. If 4e would've came out today under the name of "D&D Tactics" or something, it would have been acclaimed by the public. My advice to new players is: don't listen what oldtime D&D players say about 4e. In 4e you can still do EVERYTHING you can do in 5e, even roleplaying. Roleplaying is about the players, not the game. 4e IS STILL D&D. If you like tactical combat, MMO oriented computer games and balancement between classes, 4e is the edition for you. Give it a chance and you won't regret it.

I haven't played D&D since the end of 2nd edition. In the intervening time I have bought the 4rth & 5th edition books and am currently playing 5th. Although I never played 4rth I have to say it is masterfully done. Really coherent and well indexed, I like the perspective that James Wyatt & co. brings to the game and the encounter building tools in the DMG are excellent. (and by excellent I mean the best I have seen from among the couple dozen I have experience with.) Everyone on that team can be extremely proud of 4rth. I'd urge you to play a different RPG, at least for starters. D&D as it is now is still the "Advanced" form of the rules, which is rather involving. There are some RPGs (D6, GURPS, Risus, OSRIC) that only require a few pages of total rules, or go for an Old School Revival (OSR) RPG that emulates D&D but as a non-Advanced level (Basic Fantasy is legally free and very easy).

why do people hate 4th edition? it seems that 5th and 3rd edition are the most beloved from what I've seen. I could be totally wrong about that btw. but either way, what's the difference between the editions? aren't the core gameplays of each edition the same?

    • @MannyBrum
      @MannyBrum 8 лет назад +6

In 5th edition the D&D team took the most popular features of all 4 previous versions and discarded everything people didn't like. 3/3.5 was popular with hardcore players because it was very detailed and had rules for everything, but it was complicated, nobody really ever knew all the rules, and it was prohibitive for new players. 4th tried to speed things up and streamline them but it never really felt like D&D. 4th is a lot more like a TCG or a strategy game than D&D. 5th not only feels like classic D&D, but it's streamlined while still flexible enough to swap in your favorite rules from 3.5 if you feel it's too light on rules. It's not very hard to convert monsters and adventures over from 3.5 to 5e. I've gotten people who never thought they would ever want to play D&D to get addicted to it with 5e. 4e isn't really a bad game, it has some good ideas, but it doesn't feel like D&D.

It gets very intuitive once you start playing. I had a lot of trouble at the beginning and the information in the books is overwhelming but you get the hang of it from the first dungeon you play. You will see it is not that hard to understand. You only need 1 person that has played before to be the dungeon master to make everything run smooth. The game is amazing, you have a blast everytime you play!

    • @12outland12
      @12outland12 8 лет назад

The same way that everything else in the game work, you roll a dice and add a number. You make an attack against an enemy, say you swing a sword or fire lightning. You roll, add your attack bonus and if you get high enough you hit. Then roll again, add your damage bonus and do damage plus any extra effects happen.

thank you, surpisingly, i am restored on the wings of Owl, i am dying to my old life and returning to the nerd world, only its a lot more peaceful, and its integrated with my life. the nerds respect me, this is part of our lore. as a druid, i am learning incredible things, i am hanging out with cool spirits, even if i don't always make a clear trail back to it can also be a good thing sometimes. Owl came back into my life. the clocks, are a symbol of the magical logos, but it is not really time, but an abundance of experience. Owl is an angel that's been with me strongly since a child, and even made it to the here and now. though i haven't acknowledged her much, she is a great friend. she's taking me back to those first experiences of freedom i really felt. the simplicity, this is still that. the scary stories of childhood are just that, owl goes beyond the masks, ancient enemies are now at peace, we're all learning yoga together, which always happens in the end. the owls question is identity. druids have the awen symbol of inspiration but also the owell, symbol of letting things be, sometimes we cant force things to be exactly the way we want but if we let it go it will be okay, we've got to learn to flow with non inspiration also, sometimes. cowbear. it is creating art. owl is helping the ecosystem of the world, owl always sends messages. owl is school e. the ecstatic school. learning from no specific teacher, but from the spirits as they manifest. the thing is nerds respect me. for me the nerds are the wisdom, im just settling back into that mode fully. it all just comes back to the letters, we wear our adornments, we talk through computers, but that doesn't mean we are really cut off from eachother. nerdy relationships can be just as meaningful. my druidry doesn't have to be real. i transform myself into the trees and animals and give messages to the rangers headquarters in the town, in it i see the meaning of life. owl encourages creative approaches, not always going the direct way, this may seem like flashiness but it actually makes us give more attention to what we are truly doing. this has been a phoenix journey for me. and its energies are powerful, fiery, but rooted in tradition, ive got to let go more, and just live the energies. im surprised that i became the shaman. the metaphor gathers strength. we literally make ourselves into the messages, the letters, the animals are words, it all an angelic language that is the world. this is yoga and yet im not twisting and bending anymore, im just becoming. this is the way that these things work. our is the one who has the thing that seems to be the grid, but then it becomes, actual organic, good wholesome life. owl has shown me, her magic, and her books. facebook for example. none of this is bad, none of this is selling out, theres are just the ways of the tribe. you have to able to relax, its not going to block our path back to wholeness. owl is the lsd. owl understands, and takes me back to the people like me. shows us our hidden unity. nerds are strong. and nerds are good at heart. cainbowl, owl smoked weed with me. owl is a strange guardian, but a true one. i have to acknowledge the magic of my family, they become owls. the forest floor, leave of passionate colors, a mural like image of owl, me lying curled up, the healing happening in the mushroom circle. not just ditsyness but real wisdom. winged turtle of the tree tops. the location of owls home remains unknown but always there. in all you i see a wisdom. through the way in which we are connected has changed, it doesn't make it soulless. it must be admitted, there are some computer game like aspects, and theres definitely an abundance of easter eggs, but we can break the stereotypes. with owl, the technology doesn't seem so frightening, like the image of the magic, melting clocks, it all becomes imbued with the vines and mosses, of integration and even its spirit is able to awaken from the shell that hides its original heart. a heart among the metal. metal becomes nettle. mushrooms are back on staff. the cows can be left alone. there is magic is the woods. im not realizing im owlizing, the wisdom... the spirit. i interpreted you wrong, the intelligence is there. i can make a mistake too, sometimes you have to make a mistake with heart, for the truth to fully unfold, instead of trying to seem always perfect. does it go against enlightenment that i still have emotions both good and bad, no... it increases its beauty, i see the immediately people around me, and their strong connections to the plants they are all druids as well. the laughing gym mushrooms, puts us in the yoga studio, autumn, she knows, everyone seems to know but its okay, its organic. in the sun, i will admit you guys can seem kinda, simplistic at times, but it is not truly so. for me this is my process of renewal. im loosing all my sick feathers, and growing them back healthy. the people i met who i saw as all part of the test, on my hippy journey, now i see their parts integrated in me, i see it wasn't them, but the planet itself which caused it, i see that i am able to leave behind a trail of healing. most of my work is solitary. but there are always people on the peripherals, the nature of this work is that i can only really see myself doing it, but i should never think i am really alone. we are healers connected to the talking earth. our ways still exist. no one is doing anything bad, there can be trust. everything must honor both life and death. there is trust, though these metaphors are a bit intense for me and cause powerful emotion. they will not harm me. nor will they force me along an overly cliché path. its like the grateful dead said, i had to die. but no voodoo is eternal. we just cant be afraid of it, we can stand up to it, it seems like a black hole, but its really just not real.
whats happened to me seems like an intense arcane ritual. this is what life is really about. owl came and broke me free, i was waiting i thought no one would come. it wasn't john brown it was white owl. and that's white oak, why we toke... these are old trees. be they also have an inner child. my job is keeping the wise inner child alive in us all, its not either/or, parents vs. offspring all of us can have it, true health is beyond time, we will all live to be 8888 Yamaowl. certain recipes are eternal. ariel is the angel. seemed to do nothing, but in the end, now it proverbially 'tripping'. groovy. all you guys are like feathers... and you can think of my as a feather unto you, we make up eachothers wings, and they are wings of the rainbow. we are flying together. these dreams are so simple. but so meaningful you don't have to die just believe you can fly. - leprechaun owl and shaman owl are one! good and bad luck are one. in animals are incredible things these teachings cant be rushed though, whenever i consciously try to find them to amass my wealth of knowledge it eludes me, only when i slip into it. kinda like playing a good song is it there.. finally its the middle ground, all our arts can coexist here. what we had before was just, a defiency of animals, unrealistic depiction of forestscape haha. that can definitely be depressing all of us must be there. the call went out, the call was hu. we responded. hu. this is all like changed by the spirit i approach it in, but at the same time icant just act like i understand it all and remain cool constantly, losing sometimes actually seems to be doing more good than not. i know im technically supposed to be leaving everyone behind, but im just going to pretend everyone is being renewed instead. i feel like that's a place where i can attempt defiance to the set in stone patterns, and see what i get for the sake of my convenience and not being like, an over doer. but yea always feel free to tell me to, buzz off, im kinda just like a stream, that will start flowing as you can tell. im not taking silence as a hint to stop, and i would love any messages back on any topic whatsoever, but if u want it to stop, that can happen to, im just relaxing

Minis are used to help people visualize the battlefield and make better choices. Also there is no 1 way to play; some will like minis and mats some like TotM. Who cares how others play so long as they are enjoying DnD.

OK I see I wrote original comment when i was pissed off about something, but i still think, that quality of visualization depands on DM and how he describes the scene. If you visualize it from 1st person, you are still capable of best choices. I think that miniatures may(!) pull players from their imagination.

Udrakan Morturim; I feel that for players seeing the environment from the birds eye view helps them work together. Also as I have said before with all of the rules about 5ft steps and cone ranges and threat ranges it helps the players feel in control of where they are and how to go about a certain situation. I tend to make my games very hard where my heroes have to fights against great odds sometimes and they tend to die on a reasonably basis. So having the map helps them survive longer.

As a player, you need to feel the weight of your spear and your shield, to feel the straps from leather armor around your body, the smell of your character's sweat. Inhale the cold air and feel your heartbeat to increase. That is what it is to play combat in role-playing game.
Birds-eye perspective is tearing you out of that immersion. Combat can be tactical even in "1st person" if GM is good enough to describe the location well and quick.
Still, if you are having fun playing ludo race with looting, have it your way.

If you plan on being the DM, you can make your own boards. You can download the books from nearly anywhere on the internet, or buy them from a bookstore/hobbyshop. Dice and minis can be bought at the same hobbyshops, or bought online or you can improvise minis as long as you have access to a picture of the monster, so your players don't have to use their imagination if you can't buy any from said hobbyshops.

As roman said, don't let that deter you. If I could find a group of people to play with, I'd take part in tabletop sessions in a heartbeat. I've always been a huge fan of D&D, and I even have characters made up that actually don't use the 'standard' PC races, such as a Yuan-ti (essentially Human/snake hybrid race) or Minotaur. For the most part, you can simply let your imagination run wild. Even people like Vin Diesel have admitted to playing D&D, so don't worry about what others think. :)

Perception and Insight are skills determined by your Wisdom. To find them out, find your Wisdom Modifier (10 = 1, 12 = 2, 14 = 3 and so on) then add half your level (remember to round down, so a level 1 character would not have any added bonuses for level). Then if you're trained in the skill add an additional 5. Then add any further bonuses you might have.
To work out your passive perception/insight just add this number to 10.

Obvious marketing for their 4th Edition products, but I liked this as an intro to D&D, nonetheless. Convincing, compelling. Well explained.
Indeed, a game that has a potential for a lot of fun, long as the players have a modicum of patience, fair tolerance and a fertile imagination. And like high fantasy, of course, in this case. Otherwise, they'll have to look for other similar games.
I've never actually played it, but as it stands and if I may say so, D&D is currently my favorite of them. The most attractive and seemingly most fun.
Though I *am* curious about roleplaying Warhammer 40k.
PS: those handbooks sound handy, indeed. But I don't care much for the board and the pieces. Maps are handy, anymore than that and it deters one's imagination. I'd start seeing a character as his figurine appears rather than as I'd imagine it. It's not as bad with those figurines as it is with roll20's cartoons, to be fair -- which are optional, BTW.

If you like the Red Box, just keep going with Essentials Products like "Dungeon Master's Kit" "Monster Vault" and the players books "Heroes of the Fallen Lands" and "Heroes of the Forgotten Kingdoms" None of these products are expensive ($15-$20 or less each), the DM kit and MV are boxed sets with tokens, maps, rule books, and more adventures that continue where the red box left off, and the "Heroes Of" books have all the classes and levels for players. Rules Compendium is also a good book.

Basically the DM describes the situation that the players are in, then draws a map on a graph sheet with 1" squares, builds something with dungeons tiles, or uses a pre made map from a published adventure. For example, let's say that you (as the DM) are roleplaying a wizard in a village. He explains to the adventurers that he needs help to clean out a goblin infested dungeon and will give them lots of treasure if they do. If the players decide to accept this quest, then you would draw a map.

I'm not sure what comes in the Red Box but definitely look for the Player's Handbook One. If you're thinking of being a Dungeon Master, also buy Monster Manuel One and Dungeon Master's Guide One as well as a dry erase play-mat and DM screen. Once you become more comfortable with the game, try looking into supplements like Player's Handbook 2&3, Monster Manuel 2&3, and Adventurer's Vault. For new Dungeon Masters, it might also help to buy a pre-made module, Keep on the Shadowfell is a good one.

its not as bad as you might think, I played a game with some friends recently who were playing for the first time and they seemed to pick it up pretty quickly. The most important rule is that if you want to perform any action you roll a d20, so if you don't know a rule then that's fine, you just roll. oh and your friends don't really need to read through much, they just need to create a character and the DM does the rest. Plus you can introduce them to the game as you go. :)

Ego death - it's kind of like a song or religion about the rise and death of ego but it's not calendar based and any maps like that are only metaphors, the ego doesn't rise in spring and die predictably in late autumn for a gestation period, it always just happens in the now as opposed to on a schedule, but times when we focus on ego death do make change in our lives, it is a season but not one connected to time, it is in a way, a Sun, that shows is more directly. There is the sun of the sky but then the Sunshine inside shows us even more, when we access it, it does heal earth and everything, it is unconditional love... The religions can only generally mimick life and death of ego but when it comes it always breaks away from exact duplication, we understand the metaphors but it's always something more. Not a programmable experience

Yes, you can start with 4th edition. You don't need to buy anything from any other edition. And the max number of people needed to play is 2: 1 player and 1 dungeon master. Check local game stores if you are lucky enough to have one as they might do games. Meeting people is a part of D&D but if it helps, remember that in the game, you will interact with people indirectly most of the time, that is through/as your character. I hope you find people to play with and have fun!

D&D and pen-and-aper RPGs in general are essentially cooperative. Technically a Player Character can attack another, but the game's not balanced around that. There's a kinda new type of quick-fire game in organized play called Lair Assault that encourages the DM to try their hardest to kill the players, but that's as close to real competition as I'd say it gets. Don't let that discourage you, in general a ruthless DM can make for a pretty intense and cutthroat game.

You're bound by the rulebook insofar as when you're allowed to do so although you may well be able to summon a meteorite, there are rules that tell you if you'll succeed and how much damage it will do. The DM is there to facilitate your imagination within the context of the rules and the game; he doesn't usually play a main hero, he plays everything else in the game like baddie monsters and dungeon bosses and tavern keepers.

Apparently they are, but somewhat modified to account for the lack of a DM. For example, monster "ai" is public info, as the players need to move the monsters themselves. If you want to understand how D&D is played try these 3 things 1. Watch the videos in which the writers of Robot Chicken play the game. It is good as it takes you through a whole game and plus it is funny as hell to watch. 2. Watch some videos by Repsesper. He gives good tips for D&D players and DMs (thats short for Dungeon Master). 3. Last you can go to the D&D Website and read all the rules for the game (you might have to download but its free and doesnt takes up that much space).

No usually every edition last at least 5-10 years, or so has been. Although when you start growing you become fond of a specific one, or sometimes for the sake of it you can keep changing, all of the previous versions had its flaws and good points, bear no grudge against any of it, just keep in mind the dms best friend "there is no rule", the art of being a dm is simply to adjust and have fun.

Player's Handbooks 2 and 3 just have extra races, classes, powers, etc. They are not necessary to start playing. Or at all really. Just if you'd like to have some more options for future games.
To start playing your group would need to have at least one Player's Handbook, and a Monster Manual and a Dungeon Master's Guide for the DM.
Or you could just get the Red Box Starter Set that came out in 2010, that has pre made characters and an adventure in it to get a group started.

It really varies from edition to edition. For 4E, there are several applications online that can do most of the work for you (assuming WotC hasn't removed it, D&D Insider has one that is free to use for 1st level characters).
Being a DM is tough. For that, I recommend asking around the forums at Brilliant Gameologists and GiantITP. They'll help you out.

The main difference is 3.5 is more complex and open. Like I am playing a half-fiend and half-celestial human. 4th edition pigeon holds you into many things like what you can do when you can do it. There's much more balance is 4th to the point where classes feel very similar. In 3.5 balance can be an issue but can be over come.

My intelligence level is genius. I'm not fooled by lies. Intelligence makes me free. I was trying to be humble but this situation makes me proud of it, I have to emphasize that, for the good of myself and others. I'm one of the creators of society, I know all it's ins and outs. my intelligence is my strong suite... Though I don't always show it off blatantly, it's always there, sometimes intelligence can make you look stupid, it's just that it's not about proving intelligence constantly to others but rather living intelligently in general *loving kindness meditation* Why waste my time trying to prove my perfection in trails that don't matter? Why not shirk that and fail, seeming irate and foolish, while taking care of what truly does matter, sometimes you have to sacrifice aesthetic for functionality. I am divine intelligence, as is all consciousness. Most people are as intelligent as me, we are geniuses. A true genius is always surrounded by genius, but then again so is a fool. I'm also incredibly loving. I believe in heart intelligence. The heart is the true center of the third eye, not the forehead . Time travel just came out. I am honored by everyone. I am the psychologist. All you need is love! Stay awesome!

Its actually easy if you read basic rules. To try it out you might be fine with just one adventure book, like `Keep of the Shadowfell` that is 1-3 level campain. It has all the basic rules in it, also 5 premade characters for basic team. If you want different class or race - more info are in player handbooks (there are 4 for DnD 4e). For dungeon master there is `Dungeon master guide`. A little bit more info on skills then in adventure book etc. For making and leveling characters, and faster character sheet making - best is `Character Builder`. There is also DnD 4e wiki - dnd4 dot wikia dot com/wiki/D%26D4_Wiki. And if you can`t find group of people to play with - check roll20.net
