I love the knee lift on my Bernina machines. My dealer suggested that the first thing I learn to do was use my left foot to control the foot pedal. That way I wouldn’t accidentally activate the knee lift and the “gas pedal” at the same time. My dealer was right. It was very easy to get used to using my left foot. Good luck with your new machine.

What a beautiful machine! I use a 1937 Singer that was my grandma's, it's a straight stich only machine and it runs like a champ. If I was going to get a new machine it would be a Juki for sure.
I bet that is an awesome machine, if it runs good I would keep it. My purchase was more of everybody else has one - that doesn’t me my brother machine was bad, Yours comes with memories and that you can not buy.
I have an older Juki and i was amazed at the amount of oiling it required and it ha s to be done every time i sew. It is a beautiful machine. Have lots of fun with it.
Yes. Juki is still made from a heavy duty metal that requires that it keeps well oiled. Its machines are related to their heavy duty professional machines. Those machines actually sit down inside an oil pan. The jukis are not electronically driven like the more modern machines. Some of them actually have a motor that is not within the body of the machine. But instead mounted on the underside of the table that comes as part of the machine. There are some of the newer machines that have a few electronic conveniences added. But by en large they want the machines to last your entire lifetime. So they are built in this way. And they have some of the most beautiful stitching out there due to their simplicity. I want one of the professional grade ones to make purses. But I just don’t have the space right now.
I have and adore the Brother version of this machine. I bought it when I began quilting... It does EVERYTHING well. I was able to FMQ twin size quilts with it. I don't roll them, I squish them under the throat. LOL Enjoy learning! I'm excited for you!
Looks like an awesome sewing machine. I know you’ll enjoy it for many years to come. If and when my life settles down a bit I may start quilting some simple things like table runners, placemats, lap blankets, and other small things. Just got to get through gallbladder surgery and healing first.
I bought s few years ago from Juki junkies a juki TL2010Q and they are great machines, I also have a juki 1541s industrial sewing machine, it's a work horse, you will enjoy this machine, they are made so well
Bought the Juki 2010 in June for my 69th birthday. Heavy mechanical machine like the older Sears Kenmore I had in the late 70s. Love the threadcutter on the foot pedal and button on the machine. It took some practice not to cut threads at the wrong time 😅. And the speed control. I sew slower and liked that option. Will follow your channel as you adjust to your work horse straight stitch machine. I am still getting used to mine. My 28 year old Janome computerized one has all the decorative stitches when I need them but the Juki sewed perfectly right out of the box.
Congratulations! I bought my Juki about 4 yrs ago. I love my Juki, it is the best machine in my opinion. My first machine was a Janome, good machine, but not the best for quilting. You will love the Juki as you progress in piecing and quilting. Best wishes for you as you explore this new hobby.
Congratulations on your new Juki, I think you're going to love it! I have a TL-2010 that I bought back in 2017. A couple of years later, I also got a Juki HZL-DX7 because I wanted the decorative stitches and other features. It's great, but I use my TL-2010 the most. I have it serviced once a year. Just clean it out and oil it regularly and you'll be so happy with it! Have fun!
@@barryquilts You will love it, I guarantee! Those machines were retirement presents to myself, and worth every penny! One thing I learned, I was following the instructions (I thought), but it turns out I was over-oiling the 2010 and I ended up with oil on the bottom. So in my case, I definitely oil it, but I'm very sparing - one drop only.
Wow! Beautiful. I love the way it sounds, so quiet. I'm with ya, I don't need all those fancy stitches, gimme a straight back n forward. Congrats she's a beauty and you're gonna love her! I have a Baby Lock Jazz 2 and man that throat space is important. Enjoy!
Cool new machine for you! Regardless of how much you use the machine take it in for service every year and it will last and run smoothly for you and the next generation. Enjoyed the excitement you showed when unboxing. It’s nice to see men getting excited about sewing.
I’m so excited for you to start Quilting. Absolutely love the machine that you picked. Great job. Can’t wait to see your first Quilt. Have fun and I’ll be watching out for your next video when you start your first Quilt.
Hi Barry. I have the same machine and you will love it. I also didn't get the one with the speed control and it hasn't mattered to me one bit. I'm used to controling the speed with my foot. Now hurry up and start making a quilt on it for us to see.
Hi Barry, I have this same machine and at first thought I should have gotten the 2010. It was, however, $300.00 more. I was able to make a mechanical speed limiter that attaches to the foot pedal and also added a Juki attachment to the pedal that disables the thread cutter. I kept on hitting it by mistake. This machine is a true workhorse. I use it mainly for canvas. It goes through 8 layers of duck canvas with no problem whatsoever. Best of luck with your new purchase!
I’m inspired by watching your channel and Juki unboxing. Watched your short video showing the green and peach quilt top. Wow’ed! Also saw the other short where you show the winter themed charm quilt, with binding. Binding? Binding is not a beginner skill level so am impressed What did you do with the Brother sewing machine after having the juki? I’ll be faced with a similar situation when my TL arrives.
Well thank you very much. Don’t look to close at that binding lol. I still take my brother as a travel machine and I want to use it for zig zag stitching and appliqué work.
@ I was offered an amazing deal on a Janome HD9 but they wanted my Brother traded in. Wanted t(e zigzag option so Juki TL and keep the brother is how I am headed.
Looks like a great machine! Congratulations for trying a new hobby. Won't be long till you're an expert with your new machine. Looking forward to following you! If you were a former electrician, I think you should have another website teaching simple electrical diy videos for us that need help learning simple replacement of sockets, or plug ins, simple steps to rewiring lamps, just small household improvements. You are good at speaking clearly, slowly, and informative. A lot of us ladies could use your help. Thanks, really enjoy your presentations!
Thank you but after 40 years I want to try something else. There is little to no risk of doing quilt videos but teaching electric could give me sued or at least that’s what I think so I really didn’t want to do it for that reason alone.
Congratulations- just did another video on it. It’s a 52” husky from Home Depot. I really like it but the drawers are sort of keeping the table a little high for me. I’m going to but the one without the drawers next. I really do like it overall.
This is cool. For all the money they charge. Your think they'd give a decent size throat. I mean i thought it would be longer. It is taller so that should help with quilting.
Barry, My TL arrives tomorrow. Pretty stoked about that. Any tips, tricks or surprises? How are your quarter inch seams and what foot are you using? Hearing mixed comments that the standard foot is an scant ¼ inch while another wrote it isn’t accurate. What are you working on now?
First congratulations I think you will love actually I know you will love it. Mine came with a scant 1/4’” foot. There are videos on how to determine if it is giving accurate measurements. That all depends on thread wt and how you press. My opinion do not buy a foot with the seam guide. On the TL I would get the magnetic seam guide for about $5 easier and better in my opinion. These machines are super fast. If you have a problem accidentally cutting your thread with the pedal - they sell a rubber gasket that goes under your pedal to disable the foot thread cutter. I bought one for myself. I am super excited for you. My only advice is get some scrap fabrics and just sew lines up and back until you get the feel for it. You will do great!
@ Barry, i have bern following Juki Junkies for s couple of years, longingly. I am a machine nerd. I also enjoy watching sewing machine repair videos just for the fun of it.. 😳
@@barryquilts I did watch your TL unboxing and vicariously shared your excitement, had forgotten about the magnetic seam guide you recommended. I will be buying one of the rubber attachments for the foot pedal. My projects alternate between heavier materials and thicker thread than the cutter should be used. On your grandson’s quilt, impressed by your fabric choices. I struggle there. Did the anchor fabric also come from Walmart? I’ve bought fabric there but didn’t see any that nice. I had bern looking for similar.
I purchased the yellow and orange from Walmart, the anchors and background from hobby lobby and the water was from Joann fabrics. I am picking up material here and there.
What’s your throat space on that? I just got a Grace mini quilter today, so I’m checking for options. Currently I have a baby lock on it. That machine would make it easy to change the bobbin while there’s a quilt on the machine!
I also bought the same model last week & awaiting delivery. I got it for the speed in straight stitching & bobbin changes. I have a Bernina 475 QE, which is great for piecing n & embellishments but too slow for straight line quilting, borders, & binding. I can't wait after seeing your unboxing. Next, I can't wait to see your quilty projects. Are you taking lessons or in a guild?
I got mine a month ago. It’s out of the box but moves from the table to the floor. Haven’t used it yet. But Barry has inspired me to at least thread it!
I don't know who the manufacturer is of these machines, but mine is exactly the same but it says BabyLock on it. I love that machine. I love her for bindings!
That is great! I was torn between Juki and Baby Lock. My friends laughed when I told them I bought it. They said don’t you already have a sewing machine? Lol

Cool new machine for you! Regardless of how much you use the machine take it in for service every year and it will last and run smoothly for you and the next generation. Enjoyed the excitement you showed when unboxing. It’s nice to see men getting excited about sewing.
Thank you very much! I don’t think I’m excited - I’m obsessed lol!
Congratulations! Enjoy your new machine. May you have many years of fun and creativity 😊. Thank you for sharing! Your friend Diane ❤
@@dianehess3706 thank you very much Diane and the same to you- Happy Holidays
I’m so excited for you to start Quilting. Absolutely love the machine that you picked. Great job. Can’t wait to see your first Quilt. Have fun and I’ll be watching out for your next video when you start your first Quilt.
I'm really looking forward to it and you'll be the first to know when I've got something finished.
Hi Barry. I have the same machine and you will love it. I also didn't get the one with the speed control and it hasn't mattered to me one bit. I'm used to controling the speed with my foot. Now hurry up and start making a quilt on it for us to see.
I am on it - I’m ironing some squares right now lol.
I have been thinking of doing that with my foot pedal - thanks for the tip!
@ I’m not sure how to do it but I could forward a picture of the adapter that I made.
I’m inspired by watching your channel and Juki unboxing. Watched your short video showing the green and peach quilt top. Wow’ed! Also saw the other short where you show the winter themed charm quilt, with binding. Binding? Binding is not a beginner skill level so am impressed
What did you do with the Brother sewing machine after having the juki? I’ll be faced with a similar situation when my TL arrives.
Well thank you very much. Don’t look to close at that binding lol. I still take my brother as a travel machine and I want to use it for zig zag stitching and appliqué work.
@ I was offered an amazing deal on a Janome HD9 but they wanted my Brother traded in. Wanted t(e zigzag option so Juki TL and keep the brother is how I am headed.
I'm thinking of getting this machine. Your video is a big help.
It looks and feels like it is built to last.
Congrats on the new Juki. You will love that knee lift once you start working on those "bigger" projects.
Thanks! I am looking forward to using it.
You will love this!!
I really think I will. I love not fighting with the bobbin already.
@barrysquilts Well then, Barry enjoy your new machine and Merry Christmas in 2024!
thx
Im jealous Barry. But also happy for you. 😊 Happy guilting.
Thank you !
Hurray!!! ❤
@@sarahstewart2059 yay!
Great machine for piecing and also bag making!!
@@robinh I saw about making bags on a demo video. That is so cool
Happy quilting! Tell Steve hello for me. 😊
I will do that - I just let him outside and I’ll tell him when he comes in
congrats on the new machine.
Yes, thank you
Hi 🙂 I'm a beginner too! Thanks for sharing! I wanted to ask you what kind of table you have?
Congratulations- just did another video on it. It’s a 52” husky from Home Depot. I really like it but the drawers are sort of keeping the table a little high for me. I’m going to but the one without the drawers next. I really do like it overall.
I worked in a factory once making clothing the knee lift is fabulous one you get used to it.
I’m going to try and get use to it.
This is cool. For all the money they charge. Your think they'd give a decent size throat. I mean i thought it would be longer. It is taller so that should help with quilting.
I think it’s about 9” inch throat. It is way bigger than my brother was - that was my only reference
Ps go to jukiejunkies on RUclips. They have a lot of videos on how to wind bobbins and thread the machine and oil it frequently.
I think it is about 9” inches
Have you tried sewing fleece on it …? That’s my main fabric I use … thanks
Not yet but I have done flannel
I have this machine , I love it but I'm still unsure what needles and thread are best ?
Same here - I was looking at the fabric store and just left the isle. I need to do some research soon. Mine came with about 5 and I’m on number 2.
Hey Barry, OMG so jealous as I want one too.
It’s been on my wishlist and I rationalized a way to pay for it lol
The knee lifter is excelente! Try to use it from the beginning and you’ll see how useful it is
Thank you I am excited to get the hang of this thing
I also bought the same model last week & awaiting delivery. I got it for the speed in straight stitching & bobbin changes. I have a Bernina 475 QE, which is great for piecing n & embellishments but too slow for straight line quilting, borders, & binding. I can't wait after seeing your unboxing. Next, I can't wait to see your quilty projects. Are you taking lessons or in a guild?
I have been going to a local community center that has a fantastic sewing room with a brand new Grace Longarm. I’ve been 3 times so far.
You will love this machine. I’m excited for you!
I have the same machine- only mine is still in the box 😊
Getter out and have some fun 😀
I got mine a month ago. It’s out of the box but moves from the table to the floor. Haven’t used it yet. But Barry has inspired me to at least thread it!
I don't know who the manufacturer is of these machines, but mine is exactly the same but it says BabyLock on it. I love that machine. I love her for bindings!
That is great! I was torn between Juki and Baby Lock. My friends laughed when I told them I bought it. They said don’t you already have a sewing machine? Lol
@barrysquilts those who know, Know. Those who don't never get it!
Spoken like a nonsewist @@barryquilts
It looks great. Congratulations!
How many inches wide is the throat space for rolling up your quilt when you are quilting?
I believe it’s 9 inches. All I know it is huge compared to my brother.
I love my juki
I fully understand
I have that machine. I love mine. Theres really nothing to set up. What did they do extra?
I subscribed to you and I hope to catch you live!
Nice looking machine. Does it tell you when the bobbin thread is low? Looks like you can’t see it when you’re sewing.
No but I’m sure it will sooner or later
Lol
It's good machine it will last Forever I have the 2010 pretty much the same machine I recommend getting the juki machine oil, I get mine on amazon it will last forever
Thank you! I will be sure to check that out!
Hi Barry, I’ve just come across your channel. I just wanted to say thank you for taking us along on your journey. When you have time have a look at ‘Dave’s Craft Room’, he may inspire you to do what works for you, and that you don’t have to follow the ‘rules’ in the world of quilting. You may also find his setup helpful. I’m looking forward to seeing how you express your creativity. Good Luck. Pauline, Sheffield, UK
Thank you very much and I will check him out. I just hope that you continue to find my content interesting as I learn 😊
Thank you for your support! If you ever have any questions or concerns with your new Juki reach out we will be happy to help you. You're doing amazing work on your YT channel!! SUBSCRIBED :)
Thank you very much! You were terrific to deal with and shipped very fast!
Mám JUKI HZL-DX 7.Super.
Juki is a great machine
Awesome purchase! Now join your local quilt guild - where you will learn a ton and make new friends!
I found that my local community center has an awesome group of quilters and sewing room
Something I don’t understand why when people get a heavy boxed item is this yes open the top but cut down both front corners to lift out. I always think of machines oils etc.
lol you could have told me that first. Actually the way it was packed - that was the only way to practically remove it. Runs fine.
Does anyone have the Juki DDL-8700-H? I would get that one IF the feed dogs could be lowered!
I'm going out for breakfast with my bestie tomorrow and the first words out of mouth will be 'Did you see Barry open his Juki?' 😅
That is awesome! I am so honored
The knee lift might not work due to the dimensions of your bench. Mine barely fits, I have to rearrange!
That's a good point and I didn't even think about that! I might buy the one with no drawers?
