Learning to quilt was of my bucket list for when I retired. Well, that was 11 years ago and that’s as far as I’ve gotten with my bucket:). I’ve made quilts for all my children, grandchildren, other family members and my dog. It’s a wonderful way to exercise your creativity. One warning though, resist the temptation to buy fabric you don’t have a project in mind to use it on. I have so much more fabric than I can possibly use in this lifetime. And creating quilts produces “scraps” that are too big to throw away so your fabric produces more fabric. I do enjoy looking a my “stash” but if I had it to do over, I would buy less and quilt more. Have fun.
Thank you for that tip. I have 2 quilts that I want to do. The first one is just going to be a simple 9 patch half square triangles. The second one I want to do is an Ohio Star Quilt.
This is great! I’m 62 and a retired teacher and trying to figure out the same things as you are. I too have discovered that I love love love making scrappy quilts. There are no rules and nothing has to match. I love that. Please do make some quilting videos. I will definitely subscribe and watch!

Wow, I can't imagine taking on a new hobby at such a ripe old age! I'm also a guy beginning his quilting journey, but I'm so glad I'm starting young, at 58.

Not only are they often inspiring with the posts of their work, but they usually give great advice when you have a problem or question. Good luck Barry.

When we stop learning we just head towards dying. I’m happy for you. I’ll be watching as I am a newbie. I have been working on the machine my mom left me when she passed away. Lots to learn and I look forward to watching your tutorials. 😊
Wishing you much success on your quilting journey. RUclips is surely your friend to learn so much about quilting. I took one class many years ago, then I learned the rest from RUclips. I have a Juki 2010Q. Love it.
You make me nervous with that rotary cutter. Fiddle with a pen instead. 😅 And you can make hqt with squares. So easy. Took me 10 years to discover that. We learn something new about quilting all the time.
Welcome to quilting, Barry. I’ve been doing it for over 60 years and I never get tired of doing it. I hope you will make a bunch of HST’s and when you take a notion to, make a quilt. Watch videos for HST quilt pattern ideas ~ there are so many ideas. And maybe think about sewing a few 9 patches because they also can be cut into each to make but look fancy quilts. I just hope you’ll share one of your quilts with us. And never be hesitant to ask questions, because there are many many many quilters who would love to help you. Good luck, I know you’re going to love sewing them!
I began sewing at 12 on my mother's older but wonderful Singer. I always made clothes, but never really enjoyed it much, and began making quilts in my early 50's. I became almost addicted to making quilts as I am to reading my books (which is something). I'm now retired, have 4 sewing machines, and enough fabric for another lifetime! I just love creating (quilts) and learning (reading). I hope you continue your sewing journey!
Congratulations! Sewing quilting and bag making have become my passion. I’m 64, and very happy and enjoy my hobbies sewing changed my life for the better. I wish you great success, learning keeps us young.
Hi Barry. I started quilting when I had to take a family medical leave, and now I'm totally hooked! BTW, I'm 61 also. I wanted to encourage you regarding your comment about the actual "quilting" part of the process. I do not use a long arm or do any free motion quilting. I like to put on a movie at night, get a quilt, and hand quilt it for an hour or so. Before you know it, it's done! I don't use a hoop and I don't try to make it lie flat. Instead, I like the fluffiness of a hand quilted, low tech quilt. I also love the quilt- as- you- go methods I have learned from all the great tutorials out there. People who see my quilts, fall in love and bring me fabric to make one for them. For me, working with all the beautiful fabrics makes me feel like I did on that first day in kindergarten when I was given a new box of crayons and a coloring book. Each project is like that for me. I hope you continue to enjoy it as well. Best wishes!
I bet your quilts are gorgeous! I admire people who can hand sew but I can’t see myself doing it. If stay hooked like I am now - I can see a longarm (computerized) in my future lol. Keep going and keep me up to date.
I started quilting a year ago at the age of 48. It is tons of fun and very rewarding. My quilts are scrappy and imperfect and I am fine with that. Enjoy your new hobby! I hope to see more updates.
Hey Barry, I applaud you for diving in to the world of quilty things in your retirement. I too am a beginner quilter , am retired and love the learning that happens and the problem solving. I have 2 finished quilts, one baby sized and the other a kid sized quilt. I found a woman on RUclips named "Googie" in Northern England who makes quilts for a childrens' charity using fabric panels of kids' story books and instead of turning them into fabric story books she "frames" (for lack of a better term) the pages with different 2 inch strips of fabric, ending up with a fun quilt. So that is what I enjoy making. And I also applaud you for exploring what brings you joy! Can't wait to see what you do with that Juki! Cheers from Minnesota Barry
I'm glad for you! Quilting can be addicting and a wonderful way to explore creativity. I've been quilting for almost 20 years and sewing for over 40. I still learn new things all the time. Hope you find joy in your new adventure. I know that it has done that for me. :)
Welcome to quilting fold! As a former electrician you will apreciate how technical the construction of a quilt can be ("measure twice cut once" applies here too). You will also eventually learn how a design is "wired together" and "what colors of the piecing wires" have to go together to make your design light up! Okay, clearly I am not an electrician so will spare you any further attempts at electrical and quilting puns, LOL!! I am 20 years into a hobby that I started just because I thought I might like to try this for a project or two. Also if you enjoy travel, consider taking that motorcycle and visiting some quilt museums or shows, it'll be well worth it! All that to say have fun and enjoy the crafty ride and the warmth of your handmade quilty hugs!!

YAY Barry! I retired 18 months ago at 61, I can relate in terms of it being a big adjustment. You are headed in the right direction, keep going! Welcome to the wonderful world of quilting! When my Mom passed, I inherited her 30 yr quilting passion, including 35 UFOs!!! New quilter too, now working to complete them in my retirement.
Congratulations on being retired too! I have two quilts from my grandmother who passed 50 years ago. That’s one thing I love about quilts is they will be here long after I am.
@@Babushka_Kat, my best friend and I quilted for 25 years together, before she passed I quilted about 13 quilts of hers because I knew her family would not like to inherit ufo’s.
The empowering of women is perfectly complemented when a man takes up a craft that has been considered a female domain. Art is art… and I think it’s going to bring you a lot of satisfaction. You have the right attitude. I am 78 this year and started sewing two years ago when I got fed up with not being able to find sweatpants and jogging pants with a fly. I learned how to sew sweatpants with a fly after I learned to make my own pants. Since then I haven’t looked back and am just now beginning to branch into quilts. I had a favourite painting by a local artist that I used as a point of inspiration for a small sampler art quilt and now it hangs by the painting… and receives many compliments. Good luck with your quilting but don’t forget to take lots of breaks for walks… it helps keep up the energy you need for the challenge of quilting. 👍🏻
@@hiltonwatkins6750 actually… men, especially in the middle east, are some of the best sewers, embroiderers, fashion designers and crafters in the world and their crafts have been handed down thru many generations of fathers, grandfathers and so on. Quilting/sewing/embroidery/knitting/crochet or any type of thread work, in the US especially, is viewed by many as a “feminine” hobby. I can see and understand why some would see it that way, but historically, it’s ALWAYS been a man’s hobby as well.
Quilting can open up so many ways to make and create....and the people you can / will meet are some of the nicest. And when you get them done they keep you warm and are a wonderful gift to the people around you.
Hi Barry, I'm a lifelong crafter and a fellow buckeye! Crochet is what I'm best at, but very recently I have been rekindling my interest in quilting. I look forward to seeing your projects come together. :)
Here’s my number one tip, turn that back wall behind you into a design wall. Cover the entire wall with polystyrene (styrofoam) and something furry (i use curtain lining) and you’ll thank me when you start laying out quilts! Enjoy!! Kate x
Thank you - I actually have a room that I am making into a craft room but I also am going to take down some guitars I have on the wall and put up quilt hangers to show off my latest and greatest. At least that’s the plan
Good for you... Im glad you found what it is that brings you pleasure. I retired 5 yrs ago and went through the same thing you described. I dabble in several crafts now and enjoy them all. Good job i will be following your channel. Loved the table video.
Do what makes you happy. I've always dabbled here and there in different crafts. I always loved quilts. So years ago, I decided to give it a go. I'm happy I did. Enjoy!
I’m the same - 5 years ago I thought my daughter and I were going into the candle business. At the end the only person doing it was me lol. Good for you on your love for quilts, I feel the same way. Happy holidays
I'm 57 and retiring in a year from now, and learning to quilt for the same reasons! Trying to find my retirement hobby. I want to make baby quilts for my future grandkids. I'll learn along with you!
Welcome to quilting! I love the spatial relations and puzzle solving of quilting. Truthfully I have been dabbling in quilting for almost 40 years, but have gotten busy with it the last few years. My Mom passed away a few years ago, and was left to finish the last few grandchild graduation quilts for nephews and neices. Now to work on my own creations! I love watching some of the guys who have quilting channels. The Quilting Marine is great.
@barrysquilts Don't sweat mistakes. Biggest thing. I just bought a small longarm on a tabletop frame to see if I like it. Didn't want to spend tens of thousands and then realize it's not for me. Anyway, I am looking at it like when I was just learning how to color in the lines as a child. Takes time to perfect, and even experienced quilters use their seam ripper on a regular basis. Jordan Fabrics, Missouri Star have great videos to watch to learn how to piece quilts also.
Hi Barry. My Madin name is Hughes. Rob from Quilting In The Man Cave sent me over. Welcome to the quilting world. I`m 63 & been sewing & quilting off & on since i was 7 years old & still learn something new every day. Happy sewing!
Im 48...& Started learning to quilt. Baby steps. Just finished piecing my 2nd baby quilt...now for the actual quilting, then binding. Going to start two more quilts ..one for a friend, one for me. Learning to hand sew...@ the same time as regular sewing... Making my first needle book @ housewife as well... Good luck! Looking forward to seeing what you create/design as your first few quilts.❤
Great to find another man who quilts, the more you do, the more that passion will grow. I've made clothes, mainly for myself since the 1960s, but discovered quilting a few years ago. I turned eighty this year and still sew most days. I have brother machines, they work well, but a Juki would be even better. I am now a subscriber.
That is awesome - My brother is a good one but it does so many things it confuses my brain. I thought I would get a juki just because it just stitches 🙂 that you for subscribing and let me know if I’m doing things correct

Hi Barry. Start with small projects like table runners, table toppers and placemats. You do all the same steps as for a quilt, only smaller. It brings me a sense of accomplishment and I have made a large quilt to the finish. As i live in tropical climate (Durban South Africa) I will not be needing a lot of quilts. I am 77 and retired. Welcome to the wonderful world of quilting!!! I love to see that men also appreciate this skill and I look forward to seeing your quilting videos and progress.
I'm surprised that more men don't quilt. My husband is a retired engineer and I thought he'd be interested in quilting because of the precision involved, but nope. He's happy to watch me create quilts and shows some interest but not enough to give it a try. I got him to use Jack (the ripper) for me and he's good at that task. He'll even help me lay out a quilt, he had fun playing with my log cabin quilt I'm making right now trying to see how many patterns he could make.
Thanks for sharing this, it's inspirational, an encouragement to others, especially men and such a great way to get in touch with your feminine side and natural creativity. I'll be following with interest. God Bless 🙏🏻💖

Awesome! I retired 2 1/2 years ago and took up quilting. I bought a Bernina Q20 on a studio frame a little over a year ago. I’ve made about 30 quilts for family and friends and I’m learning some free motion techniques. Just had my machine serviced and the technician said there were over 4 million stitches on it already! Have fun! It’s a little to learn but it’s been an amazing journey so far! Bought my machine at Chestnut Ridge in Amish country! They are awesome!
@ I love it! It sews so nice. I decided on this one because it uses regular needles that are flat on the back, so easier to put in. Also has a needle threader ( for us older folks with weaker eyes) and is a very sturdy machine. After a year, it still purrs like a kitten!

I recently returned to a quilt I started sewing by hand in the early 1980:s. The pieces were made using a cardboard templete. I needed to make 5 more 21 piece 15inch blocks. Boy, do I love the rotary cutter and rulers. Those 5 squares took forever. Hope you find ehat you want to do.

When we stop learning we just head towards dying. I’m happy for you. I’ll be watching as I am a newbie. I have been working on the machine my mom left me when she passed away. Lots to learn and I look forward to watching your tutorials. 😊
I think you are absolutely correct, I hope to learn a lot along the way and share what I learn.
Wishing you much success on your quilting journey. RUclips is surely your friend to learn so much about quilting. I took one class many years ago, then I learned the rest from RUclips. I have a Juki 2010Q. Love it.
Thank you and I agree I’ve been binge watching quilting channels. I am trying to master my Juki and I am so happy with it - happy holidays
You make me nervous with that rotary cutter. Fiddle with a pen instead. 😅 And you can make hqt with squares. So easy. Took me 10 years to discover that. We learn something new about quilting all the time.
I promise to try not to have the rotary cutter next to my face. I did have the safety blade on lol.
Me too,
Good for you! So happy you found your new passion.
Thank you
Welcome to quilting, Barry.
I hope that is my next video is making HST 9 patches - thank you
It’s never late to find passion, good for you keep going. Blessings
Thank you
I began sewing at 12 on my mother's older but wonderful Singer.
Look at you - that is awesome. Thank you and happy holidays
Quilting Is a addiction! Welcome to the club !
I took it during the quarantine and now I have a sewing space in my living room ..
It’s a good kind of addiction I hope? My only problem is that I want every ruler, cutter, marker etc NOW lol
@barrysquilts it s called an addiction. But enjoy this time ! For me it s more fabrics addict !
Bisous from France
Good for you.......Welcome to the wonderful world of quilting
Thank you
Welcome to quilting and the Juki family
Thank you
Your story made me smile. You playing with the rotory cutter made me nervous.
lol I’ve been old that- I promise to not do that anymore
Congratulations! Sewing quilting and bag making have become my passion. I’m 64, and very happy and enjoy my hobbies sewing changed my life for the better. I wish you great success, learning keeps us young.
That is so great to hear you're enjoying it. Thank you!
Congratulations on your retirement and your new hobby. Welcome to the addiction! 😂
Thank you and so far I love it!
I did the same thing in 2020 when I retired. Best decision.
Fantastic - congratulations on your retirement and now I don’t feel so crazy in taking up this wonderful hobby.
I started quilting a year ago at the age of 48. It is tons of fun and very rewarding. My quilts are scrappy and imperfect and I am fine with that. Enjoy your new hobby! I hope to see more updates.
I’m going all in on this. My only hope is I don’t want to get burned out because I’m addicted lol
I second that .welcome to the quilting world.
Quilting is definitely my happy place 😊 I hope it continues to bring you joy 🤩 👏👏🇬🇧
Thank you very much and happy holidays
That sounds really interesting right now. I’m hoping just to be able to make half square triangles lol
I'm glad for you! Quilting can be addicting and a wonderful way to explore creativity. I've been quilting for almost 20 years and sewing for over 40. I still learn new things all the time. Hope you find joy in your new adventure. I know that it has done that for me. :)
That is awesome - you must really enjoy it.
Lol, you’ve given me some ideas :-)
@@barryquiltsyou can always send stuff you buy, to yourself, if it won't fit on the bike! Ask the post office to keep it if you won't be home yet, or get a p.o. box to send it to?
Si glad you are going to give quilting a try! I hope you love as much as I do.
Thank you very much and so far yes! Actually I’ve been thinking about it 24/7 for the past two weeks
That's a great story about your sweatpants - I bet that was quite a satisfying accomplishment! Great to see you move into quilting too!
I think you’re right. I’ve already been invited to go to Paducah Kentucky to the quote festival the spring I think I’ll go.
Great to see guys quilting, welcome to the club my man!!
Thank you
Hi Barry, I'm a lifelong crafter and a fellow buckeye! Crochet is what I'm best at, but very recently I have been rekindling my interest in quilting. I look forward to seeing your projects come together. :)
Thank you very much 😊 happy holidays
I started quilting at 50. Now my living room is my quilting studio. It's been a journey that I love. Good luck to you,
I hope that I enjoy it as much as you seem to. So far it’s been really fun.
You are going to fine a wonderful quilting community. Look forward to following g you on your new journey
Thank you very much!
Just found your channel, welcome to this quilty community.
Thank you very much
How lovely, I'm just starting to learn on my new to me Juki NX7, look forward to the unboxing of your new machine 😀
Welcome to the quilting world! I like piecing more than quilting. Looking forward to seeing what you create.
I think I am with you on that! Quilting process is a little bit intimidating
Good for you... Im glad you found what it is that brings you pleasure. I retired 5 yrs ago and went through the same thing you described. I dabble in several crafts now and enjoy them all. Good job i will be following your channel. Loved the table video.
Thank you - I am hoping to actually start doing some piecing in my next video
@barrysquilts that is going to be a great video.
That’s awesome - keep me informed of how you’re doing
Welcome to quilting! I love the spatial relations and puzzle solving of quilting. Truthfully I have been dabbling in quilting for almost 40 years, but have gotten busy with it the last few years. My Mom passed away a few years ago, and was left to finish the last few grandchild graduation quilts for nephews and neices. Now to work on my own creations! I love watching some of the guys who have quilting channels. The Quilting Marine is great.
That is awesome - I just hope to be adequate lol. Btw I subscribed to his channel
I’ll have to thank Rob, for the referral! Hughes is the best name isn’t it? Lol. Glad to see you.
Congratulations to you! Hand sewing is at another level. I just finished my first charm pack quilt - I’ll do it soon.
Welcome to the quilty world, as you mentioned it is a fascinating craft. I've been piecing and quilting for 30+ years. Just subbed to your channel.
Thank you and I know this channel won’t be a learning channel except for what not to do lol
@@barryquilts Hey, you never know what you might learn from someone. Everyone does thing a little different, doesn't make it wrong. You do you and what works for you.
God bless your talent and 🧵 sewing skills! I am 72 and have learned to quilt and am always learning and discovering new things! Ol'rosie
@@rosieg.5593 enjoyed your comment. I too love to learn. There’s always something new in quilting. I’m 20 years in and still learning.
That is awesome. I am really looking forward to getting adequate at making quilts so far. It’s been very fun.
You will love it!!! 👍🏻🧵🪡✂️💕
Thank you I’m excited lol
Welcome to the world of quilting. It is an awesome hobby. Looking forward to watching more of your videos.
Thanks - I hope you will enjoy the videos!
I’m an enthusiastic beginner quilter too, got two quilts I’ve pieced successfully and beyond thrilled with them, and I think it’s a really good hobby to keep your brain young and your soul satisfied! I think I’m going to enjoy your channel 😊
That is fantastic. I just completed a small charm quilt and I understand the joy of seeing the finished product ~ thank you!
Beginning quilter here too in my late 40s! Looking forward to following your journey! I have (i think) the same brother as you. Will be curious about the new machine. I'm finishing up my first one in the next few days but opted to hand tie it as I remember my grandmothers being hand tied and I loved the texture!
@@lesterbangs hand tying does make such a comfy quilt! I know all the new ways but I still treasure the old. There’s just something about hand quilting that soothes the mind and allows you to think, pray, and I also listen to audiobooks while I hand quilt.
@@apiecemaker1163 Just finished a fantastic audiobook while working this evening at it!
@@lesterbangs perfect! 🪡🧵
Thank you, my brother was an excellent machine but for Christmas I wanted another one just because lol
Sewed all my life. Enjoy the journey.
Hello to you and thank you. I just completed my first mini quilt today and I’ll show it to you in a few days lol. I really want to get to your country sometime!
Thank you. I’ve always appreciated people who quilt it’s just taking me some time to get up the nerve to do it.
I LOVE this! I hope to follow you in your quilting journey. Sewing and quilting is wonderful! You’ll love it
Thank you very much
Thanks for sharing this, it's inspirational, an encouragement to others, especially men and such a great way to get in touch with your feminine side and natural creativity. I'll be following with interest. God Bless 🙏🏻💖
Thank you 😀
Looking forward to seeing some of your creations!
Thank you and I hope to have some completed soon
Welcome to the world of quilting 😊
It's a wonderful place to be.
Thank you and I’m enjoying it.
Good for you. There are a load of videos on quilting and how-to's etc. But kudos to you for choosing something that makes you happy. My only problem with quilting is my hoard of fabric (aka stash) that I have squirreled away all over the place. Happy quilting, enjoy.
Thank you and sounds like time for some scrappy quilts lol!
I take Chromium Picolinate and Cinnamon for my diabitis. It works great. And I quilt. Love it. Thanks for sharing. I am 81. Started quilting at 60.
That’s awesome you started quilting when you did! Good for you. I’m still a newbie.
I love sewing, needlework and knitting. Plus other crafty stuff 😊. You have to try things. Keep in mind, it’s a hobby and you’re going to make mistakes. So don’t give up. Have fun and reach out to the quilting community. Just subscribed to your channel. I love watching other people’s journey in whatever they wish to do. I made my first quilt this year. It’s not perfect but I love it and it lives on my recliner. Enjoy your Juki! Thank you for sharing. Your friend Diane ❤
Thank you Diane! I’m really enjoying this so far
@ I don’t know about you but my hobbies are meditative for me. I just get into that zone and relax 😌
Just came across your channel so nice to see a bloke trying something new.
Thank you
Good for you Barry! I cant wait to see what you make. There is a lot of great tips ,designs snd tutorials on RUclips. I recently got back into sewing and find I love the piecing psrt of it. Im currently trying a quilt as you go technique. Dont worry if you not so good or dont emjoy the quilting or finishing part. You can pay longarm quilters to do some of that. Enjoy!
Thank you - luckily I have a community center near me that have a brand new 21” Grace with table. So I hope to use that - ALOT 😎
@barryquilts I hope you will show us some of your projects
Fantastic - I was at a quilt shop today looking at the Bernina’s very nice machines. You’ve really been using yours!
@ I love it! It sews so nice. I decided on this one because it uses regular needles that are flat on the back, so easier to put in. Also has a needle threader ( for us older folks with weaker eyes) and is a very sturdy machine. After a year, it still purrs like a kitten!
Hi Barry, I’ve been a quilter now for going on 18 years! You will LOVE IT! I know you’re hooked because you’ve just ordered your second machine! I own 8 altogether including my Gammill Longarm!!!! I subscribed to your channel & can hardly wait to see your first quilt!!!!! I still have my very first quilt so maybe , hopefully we can trade first quilt pictures!!!!! My name is George out in California!!
Hey George glad to see you here. I just made a charm pack quilt and I’ll show it in a video in a day or so but I can’t wait to make a queen size quilt for my bed. That’s when I think I will have really accomplished something. Long arm is still in my future- thank you for subscribing
@ That’s AWESOME!!! Every piece we make is an accomplishment!!! Will be here waiting to see your work!!! I still work part time so I’ll catch up when I can!!!

Good for you finding a new hobby. My husband couldn't wait to retire but now he spends most of the day watching old TV shows and playing video games. 😢
That’s exactly where I’ve been for the last three years and 40 pounds later lol. Now I’m trying to reverse that.
How refreshing! I love that you are just beginning this journey! I just retired myself and had started quilting 2.5 years ago. I too have my eye on a Juki that I hope to afford within the next year! Good luck!
Congratulations to you and starting your retirement journey. Who said anything about affording a Juki lol - me and the bank are partners on this one lol. I did get it with no interest so that helps. Happy holidays to you
Congratulations to you on finding this amazing and addictive hobby. Happy 😊 to join you on this seamless adventure 😮
I am glad you are here with me.
When I helped my grandmother as a young boy we used cardboard templates- not sure but they were most likely cardboard so I know what you mean. Rotary cutters and rulers have changed the game. Let me know when you get it finished
Good for you! I'm a new quilter also. Pat in FL.
Yay to us! Keep me posted how you’re doing.
Can't wait to see your first quilt!
Me too - I'm hoping it will turn out better than my first attempts at this lol
It will. I'm surprised my first one is still in one piece!
