Are apple iBook laptops collector's items yet?

- In this episode, I'll show you just how collectible the iBook series of laptops are, what they are selling for currently, and what they may be worth in the future. I also cover a few other interesting tidbits, such as modifying the LCD bezel on the clamshell so that it lights up. I also show some interesting movie clips with iBooks in them.

In 2019 I’m trying to get a graphite iBook for a reasonable price, but it’s hard
MetalJesusRocks I feel like you’re the reason the algorithm recommended this video today. 🤔
wow
Yep it’s a Allotrope of carbon whatever that means.
Two years later i live The iBook G3.
hey, if you're still looking for one i've got a graphite one i'm looking to pass on! battery's totally shot and it has school district writing on the bottom but it's otherwise pretty clean.
0:28 "This particular one is the only one I've held on to"
There is another iBook sitting directly under the table right as he says that
IKR
He means held onto from his repair business, not bought on eBay later.
+WinXPwhiz lol
yes i noticed that too...
+WinXPwhiz And he mentions at 5:35 he bought another one a week before shooting the video. So, he's not lying.
I own an Apple Pippin. by total luck I got one on eBay for £50
Might do a video/retrospective on it on my channel soon, as it's not a bad little machine. hardly any games for it, but still a nice machine.
Which model did you get? The European, Japanese or North American?
But still, any of those are worth a serious buck!
Technology Spotlight
Japanese one, the ATMARK model.
which one did you get, the 100% apple one or the one from overseas which d=is not marketed as an apple device
Larry Bundy Jr what are you doing here Larry?
That was the first apple console
The older laptops were nicer to type on because the keys had more travel.
I think some IBM computers probably will have collector value.
I used to have an IBM PC Jr when I was a kid. Too bad my parents decided to give it away.
thickpads
Well l am now 1 year in future and your name will be The 8-Bit Guy if you want to know
lol
yea
Back to the future!
Oh yeah. Maybe in your future Trump will become president, lol. You are such a liar!

"Everything apple makes will be come collectible" it hurt me when you said that
cough iPhone 4s cough
Not the apple watch 1, the ipad 1 or anything from the iphone 7 upwards. This is because the later models LOOK IDENTICAL to the models i mentioned.
Well I am using iPhone 6 plus. I would not thinking about replacing it with something else if they would not slowing it so badly.
K K they slow it down to conserve battery not because they want you to upgrade. Why do you think the iPhone 6 has been supported for 5 years then? Plus in settlings you can turn of the lowered performance. Here’s an article that can help you with that: www.macrumors.com/guide/disable-performance-management-in-ios-11-3/
If it still is slowed after that then you have over used an 5 year old phone and I would recommend trying to Delete apps and photos you don’t need. That may speed it up. Here’s another article to help you with that: www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/apple/iphone/11882804/Seven-ways-to-speed-up-your-slow-old-iPhone.html
Hope this helps.
aint no one gonna be collecting AirPods
I'm pretty sure they blocked the light up logo because the only time it would be on is when it's upside down.
It would look stupid.
We use to call the clamshell iBooks toilet seats.
Did somebody ever take a shit on them?
I wouldn't doubt it.
LOL My grandpa used to call them toilet seats too XD
LossVegas Apple had promo for schools so alot of elementary school including mine had like 40 iBooks on a cart.
@@pizzaboxer 😆
You have a really approachable way about you. Interesting vid, thanks.
This was in my recommend viewing in Nov 2016 lol
Same thing.
Steve Jobs era stuff will always be collectable
Not most of it.
okay not making fun of you more like Steve Gobs!
space doggo yea
*cough cough iPhone X cough cough*
theres nothing special about the x
I just found a tangerine iBook at the dump for free!
I'm glad I watched this video
I always wanted a clamshell because of how often I saw them used in pop-culture back in the early 2000s. I was a tween then, so I just loved the colors. I always wanted a strawberrry iMac for the same reason lol. The see-through detail felt so futuristic back then. I was bummed that they didn't make pink clamshells. :( I think the clamshell will see another resurgence any day now when Ariana Grande drops her "Thank U, Next" music video. She's spoofing iconic 2000s movies and uses a tangerine one in reference to Legally Blonde!
They built the iCarly "pearbooks" of iBooks G4 at first, but the one you showed, which was later in the show, was built off of a 2010 Macbook, right before they killed the macbooks. They also used a Black Macbook in the middle of the series.
Engei why spend money on iBooks if they are going to call them pair books🤣
@Ricky Bennett Dan Schneider has used them in literally every of his productions!
the 8-bit guy’s older videos like this one are nostalgic to me. i came across his videos in like 2015 i believe, i don’t remember. i loved his videos like these
You're great!
I always watch a video of you before programming or something similar. It motivates me in some way because it is kind of geek :')
Thanks for your videos 8-Bit guy :)
i camt believe you sold a lisa for the same price as a pizza smh
Some guy bought a pizza for over 1000 bitcoins, so...
pretty cheap pizza
Hey, without foresight, what are ya going to do?
Lisa more like pizza
My very first computer that was MINE (my personal machine, not shared by the family) was a blue clamshell. Did anyone else used to call those machines toilet seats, or are me and my friends just that weird? My very first computer was an Apple II. New subscriber, btw, really enjoying these videos.
I hate the name, they look better than new ones. Call the new ones pancakes.
I bought a busted ass one for $5 and resold it for $50.
They're iconic.
I looooved the iBook Clamshell, although I never had one and seeing this really tempts me to get one again. Would be amazing if there was some kind of case like this for the new macbooks for example.
Watching this in 2019 "I'm the ibookguy"... not anymore 😂
Its nice to finally know the computer used in iCarly
Man! The school district that I work at had surplussed like 300 clamshells years ago.
Shane Sexton yes Mac ruled the education industry until PC got cheaper for more specs.

I'd love to see more of those timeline value graphs.
I often wonder about how percent of brand gadgets ever get a significant value increase.
i am hooked on this channel!!!! you need to get famous for your top level reviews!!!
I bought an ibm thinkpad 380d in 2008 for 1$ on eBay and now you can buy this laptop for 115$. So, I hope this machine will increase its worth to 300-400$ maybe more in the next decade. I like the keyboard on this machine and the vintage tft screen when I play some vintage old games. :)
I used to have a 380d. There is a small market for those older think pad units but I don't see its vale increasing much further
The dollar sign goes before the number.
@@geektome4781 if we're going to be petty, you replied to a 2 year old comment
MilesPrower1992 I think, if you look up the definition of “petty,” 99% of the comments posted on RUclips meet that definition. But I do not believe correcting what is a common mistake, a mistake that would make someone look rather ignorant in the workplace, to be “petty.”

+Bhargav Garre Venkata but RUclips can ply html 5 now so it could work
You run into the issue that the modern CODECs have no hardware support - you end up doing everything on the CPU instead of the GPU (so very slow and pegs the CPU at 100%).
***** That might be the saddest part
Too cool! I love the older computers especially Apple computers. One of my favorites Apple has made is the iBook G3 snow white. To me it just stands out and screams beauty. The iBook clamshell is another nice laptop Apple has made. I ended up buying one fully functional off eBay for $120.00 and for that price I also got it in great condition. Glad to see you still making videos! I like how you explain things and show off stuff. Thanks for the great videos(:
I wouldn't say that old IBM and Dells are not collectible as some can be pretty steep despite their age. XPS M1730 World of Warcraft edition in near mint condition with all the upgrades often float between $1,100 and $1,300. As for IBM some of the classic Thinkpads such as the Transnote are extremely rare and sought after and often go for $200+. Not uncommon for Thinkpads that had once been owned by NASA (with proper tags ect) sometimes will go north of $600.
Anyway buying powerbooks ;)
The one thing that is going to affect the "snow" iBook models is there will be very few working machines left in the future. If you can recall, these things suffered from some pretty serious hardware failures, #1 being the GPU. So if your collecting, collect 1 that works well, and hold on to it.
I've been looking for a Seiko calculator watch, but they're like $499 in 8.5 out of 10 condition. Original sticker was probably around $129.
+Andrew Piatek don't forget inflation too, if they are in good condition.
Good point. I should probably get it then
+Andrew Piatek
oh, my... I just threw out like 3 of them... about three months ago.
whochecksthis
Yeah, some people frown upon such things. Sure, if they were run down, it's probably best to throw them out. But brand new old stock would be sweet to have. I like love the aesthetics. It's very challenging to find anything good aesthetically today for reasonable prices. Nearly everything with decent aesthetics has an unattainable retail price. Back in the late '80s and early '90s, affordable products had great aesthetics. Seiko C515 is just one example. Sony D-555 being another. Sure, the new NW-ZX2 player from Sony is very nice, but not as nice as the D-555 Discman.
I found a blue clamshell iBook with all original packaging, all original information and papers and 2 chargers. It has 512+64mb of memory and it's running OS X Tiger (originally OS 9). The only thing that's missing is the airport card, and the battery still lasts 4 plus hours, which is incredible. No physical scratches, adult owned by one person. I was thinking of selling, but after this I might hang on to it for a while! I got everything for 50 bucks at a flea market!
Seems old IBM, Compaq, and Dell stuff is becoming more and more collectable.
Especially the rarer and non-mass-made machines.
An updated version of this video would be really helpful now in 2023
TBH, the snow iBooks dont look that bad, if i had any real money i would consider buying one.
Just wanted to say ive learned so much from you over the past few years and you are a cool guy keep up the work
My friend and I bought a key lime ibook almost 7 years ago, just to smash it. Regretting that decision.
The snow iBook G4s were where I started when I began selling Macs on eBay years ago, but the Mac, which kicked off my business, was an old PowerBook G3 Pismo. I loved that thing, and I was using it alongside my Sawtooth G4. When I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't power on anymore, I sold it on eBay. The person who purchased it said it was working perfectly, and it just needed a new power adapter. Oh, well. I used the money to buy broken iBook G3s and G4s, and worked my way up to MacBook (Pros) not too long after. :)
I have mixed opinions about the iBook "clamshell". It's becoming nostalgic but still butt ugly at the same time. Kinda like the Pontiac Aztek.
+Garry Koalman I disagree, they were beautiful
Not A big Apple fan but I have to admit the Powermac g5 was one of the coolest looking pcs in recent history, I'd be curious on their collectability.
Well Apple paid alot of money for the movies. ;)
In Australia the iBooks hit rock bottom 2 years ago, but are really on the move now. I haven't been able to buy a cheap one all this year, going or for repair. I'm after a screen for a 14inch snow and they are going for $125.00 for the screen alone !
Do you think the Apple Watch will be worth a good amount since it will be a first generation in years to come?
Brian S - I'm sure it will. But now isn't the time to buy one if your goal is to make money. You need to wait until the price of them on the used market hits bottom. Could be several years. The original iPhone is already selling for quite a lot if it is in original box and condition.
Also do you think it's a good investment to get the sport and leave it rapped in the box?
Brian S I certainly think it could be-- the more original something is, the more 'one off' it will become... like a bottle of unopened vintage wine, but it could well be dependant on several factors in the future. (apple's longterm success, significance of the apple watch etc).
The time between buying an apple watch and it becoming collectable will be worth much more than the money you might make off of it. And you certainly wouldnt be the only person to do this. Plus, the chances of you making more than a few hundred bucks are VERY slim.
Guys, collecting is a hobby, not an investment. It'll never make you rich, in fact, it'll probably make you poorer ;)
Your old computer baggage is awesome. I am young, my first PC was a self assembled Pentium IV, but I am quite interested on old computers. Tried to get a Europlus a few months ago but no luck (I live in Spain, where the second hand market is not that big and computers were not that popular on the early 80s) but I am starting to get interested on iBooks. Gotta try to get some of them, and if they are a sure investment too, they are not a loss of money if I get tired of them!
I feel the same thing will happen with CRT monitors eventually
I have 2.
I had 4 now I have 2 (one sold by my dad w/o my permission other one lost)
We Had These In My Elementary School, They Work Very Well, It's Amazing To See How Old They Are 🙏🏾
Product placements don't make products iconic.
true
+rimmersbryggeri Yeah, but at least it was worth the product placements.
Brandon Tischer
Yeah because apple desperately needed sales and in those instances they outbid hp and sony for the spot.
+rimmersbryggeri I still think apple products will be collectable items in the future...
Yeah that was not my point though. They were not in movies because they were iconic. They became "iconic" after the fact and that's the reason why they become collectible. Had they been as commonplace as the ibm's or Hp's around them they would not be collectible today.
Wow this is so cool I found my moms blue iBook in my attic a couple days ago with the charger and everything! I like it so far!
Yesterday i bought my second iBook G3 for 45zl with shipping (it's about 11 dolars !)
Koledzy108 o kurwa holy shiet
In the mid 90's I had an Amiga A600, and the disc drive broke, and I was unable to find a replacement one (rural area, no longer being serviced, no way to find things like that at a distance, no money...), and the Amiga ended up being thrown away.
You can't imagine how often I've kicked myself for getting rid of that Amiga, I loved that machine, and now I could have had it not only fixed, but I could have gotten quite a few addons for it!!
*How to look like a badass in class*
Buy a non functional IBook Clamshell on Ebay
Take your laptop/Buy a cheap one
Put the laptops hardware in the Clamshell body
You now look like a hipster
I own a working one and sometimes i take it to class🤣
This is exactly what I want to do
would it fit tho?
Javiercito heh
@Yung Javier surprisingly some might actually fit just fine. Clamshells are relatively big machines compared to newer ones. Granted you might not end up with the USB ports but hey, that's the curse of retrofits
I love the way you have your stuffs hanged on your walls. It's perfect and I can't wait to apply that with my space. Btw, your content is also helpful.
I got a question. Is it worth buying a iBook G4 just to use for school work such as using Google Drive? Or just watching RUclips? My current computer runs very slow (2007 Dell Windows Vista Home Premium,) and it ends up freezing every time I try to launch google drive on firefox. It's $74 on Amazon, is it worth buying it?
NW6782 - You don't want any sort of G4 machine if your plan is to watch RUclips on it. They'd be fine for writing papers and some very LIGHT web browsing (stuff like wikipedia where there is almost no multimedia or advertising)
***** He should downgrade to XP or upgrade to 8.
NW6782 here is a better option. throw your dell away.
1. vista is crap
2. it might blow up.
vista is crap though. windows XP, 7 and 10 are best in windows
and i dont think macs are better than pc. Gaming PCS are BEAST. Same With 2015 Mac Pro but they are made for diffrent things.
I don't know but the iBook clamshell looks so beautiful.
I have a eMac is that going to be worth anything?
iMac James I think so. Most everyone has had them recycled; there are fewer and fewer in circulation. Years from now, they will be worth more.
eMacs will start getting more expensive in the coming years.
+iMacJames
Wait 5 years
At my middle school (2004-2007) we had two racks of iBook G4s. Each one had 24 computers and could be taken from class to class. They were called COWs (Computers on Wheels) and even had a little picture of a clip art cow on the rack.

Because he used to be called the iBook Guy.

Local Dallas resident and indigo clamshell owner. Love your videos!
maybe now, 4 years after, you can make an update video :D
You just justified my collection lol! I think i'm most proud of my 12" 1.5GHz PowerBook and my 17" 1.25GHz iMac G4. I see them gaining value in the future.
Also... some things like the Apple Pro Speakers and the ADC to DVI adaptor can all fetch a tidy sum of money!
Reporting from 2019: i books are still the same price 🤘🏻
I have a soft spot in my heart for the black MacBook. Add the white keyboard from a white MacBook, and you have a unique Piano look.
Hello, can you help me please. I need to know how to install newer ios version (like ios 5, 6) in iphone 2G, 3G. I think it can be done and read somewere it can be done. Thank you!!!
GjukOfficial Try this: osxdaily.com/2012/01/19/install-ios-5-on-iphone-3g-with-whited00r-5/ Good luck!
Thank you, but it's ios 3 ( only looks and feels like ios 5 ), I need real one)))
Well, that's the only method I've seen. It may not actually be possible.
Iphone 2gs maximum ios is only ios 3 for the. 3g it is ios 4 the 3GS can run 6
GjukOfficial Id recommend just buying an Iphone 3gs because they can run iOS 6 and can be found on ebay for a pretty low price.
Recently bought an iBook G4 in really good condition from a kind seller for about $50. Been loving it as an offline media player!
A working Lisa sells for a shitload now (2019).
Jamal Baker I should know. I sold one for about $3,000. Probably should've never sold it, but it was worth it for the best crack in Miami.
Your channel is amazing dude! Thanks for what you do. 😃
The clamshell aka 'barbie's toilet seat' were some of the most horrendous laptop designs in the world.
zeebazu Yep. They looked silly even back in 1998.
Apple was trying to make a iMac to go. I thought it turned out well :)
Really? I liked it! I even still want one now! Haha although i am a bit childish lol
+zeebazu apple was just coming out of it's beige phase, it took a few years to find it's "aluminum-everything" style
+zeebazu I actually liked them.
Picked one of these up for £8 from a charity shop with a charger and battery still holds a charge. Works great, running Linux.
That looks like Billie Eilish merch😂
I never realized how big those first generation iBooks were until you showed us using one sitting on your lap. Anyhow, on the topic of the good typing feel of the iBooks, I agree. I think that in general most older laptops feel good to type on (for example, I have a 15 or 16 year old Dell Latitude in almost brand new condition and I love typing on it) and the same applies for my PowerBook G3, which feels good to type on. It's a Pismo model, so it has the bronze keyboard on it. I wouldn't say that new laptops have crappy keyboards (for the most part), like my HP ENVY which has a keyboard that feels similar to a MacBook Pro keyboard and feels pretty good to type on, but I think older laptops have nicer keyboards to them. And when a Clamshell iBook is modified to have the light on the Apple logo, I think it looks cooler than even the new MacBooks.
i found a key lime in my attic :O
Nice
Lucky you
Jesus christ,
KEEP IT!!
I had a commodore 64 and a 128 both in original boxes, both working that I threw in the trash. I had tried to drop them off at my local Salvation army/GoodWill and they refused to take them because they weren't "flat screens". I still feel bad about it, I knew then that their were avid collectors of those units but for what they were worth I just didn't have the time to mess with Ebay selling them.
"Apple products are iconic and timeless because they're used in these 11 movies from a decade ago. No Windows computers were ever in movies."
- 8bit guy
The clamshell iBooks are adorable. I wish someone would make something cute and fun like that again.
does it support windows? if it doesn't what's the point in buying apple
+mathias de potter Mac OS.
XD nice joke...
mathias de potter Some people need/want Mac OS more than Windows. These old iBook are pretty useless today, even compared to other notebooks from the time, though, I will say.
brodogger81
true, I too highly doubt that they already could handle the perfect OS in that point in time. The only advantage a mac book these days could have is their stunning screens, but then again windows isn't hardware restricted so any screen could be used.
mathias de potter MacBooks also tend to be make of higher quality materials, as well as usually being thinner. Windows computers usually tend to care more about specs over looks, size, etc, so the best option of computer varies between all people.
once when I was a repair tech, a woman brought me a mac classic 2 she was a writer and had her novel in there from years ago and wanted a way to prin the novel out because the mac is dead, I found on ebay another working one for $30 and replaced the hard drives and the woman paid me $1000 and gave me a hug...love ebay
So 8bit guy what you're saying is that collect-ability is equal to the amount of product placement done in movies and other media? What is that smelly smell?
Let's be honest that ugly AF clamshell Apples will only ever be considered "Collectible" to the people who used them back in the day and have some feelings of nostalgia. Just like I would happily pay money for an old PS2 system because I gamed on it but wouldn't give you a single dime if you offered me that Apple laptop.
Um. No. I've been searching for an iBook clamshell for weeks now, and the first computer I ever had was 2011 iMac (I still use it).
I was born after they stopped making them and first took an interest in computers only a couple years ago.
Wolfgang Michael Em You and maybe 40 000 other people, I wouldn't exactly say that is a big market for collecting. Yes they might have some value for a short time but I can guarantee you very few people are going to give a shit in 20 years from now.
look, i hate apple as much as the next guy, but those are pretty iconic.
if i wasn't allergic to apple, even i might want one of those just for displaying it. but it's a bit hard to me to get nostalgic about it since i have no real attachment to apple hardware of any era. besides, you have to be pretty intimate with the stuff you're using to make it work nowadays, and i don't have that with macs.
but i like this laptop and that colorful CRT all-in-one that was out around the same time. pretty sad apple departed from the colorful look to the bland white theme.
To me an apple is a piece of fruit and a dell is a place that a farmer hung out in a nursery rhyme!
What you said at the end about things gaining value of time reminded me of the Amazing Stories episode Gather Ye Acorns, so I went and watched. Probably hadn't seen it in like 20 years.
Apple good because product placement... lol
I like your videos and even if you're the ibook guy, any videos planned on powerbooks? The Titanium model could end up as a collectable too, would be nice to see a video on that model.
Collector's items??? They should all be tossed into the nearest bin as soon as possible!
Not cool bro, think about the planet, recycle it
Da Vo
Fine, recycle them, turn them into something more useful, just get rid of the damn things!
Foebane72 the typical modern douchebag idea " OHH, ITS OLD, GET RID OF IT" people have no idea that old computers are cool machines and some are collectible.
The Retro Tech Geek
All except Apple crap, don't get me wrong.
Foebane72 i like old Apple stuff. The only "old" computers I would be ok with getting rid of are 1990s era Dell, HP, Gateway, COMPAQ, or the other common windows 95-XP machines that have no value.
I've been interested in the Clamshell iBooks for a long time, but I was never willing to shell out a fortune to buy one on eBay and risk shipping damage or being scammed. But by pure luck, I found one at the thrift store for $25 so I snatched it up. It's not in amazing condition (the optical drive is missing its face plate and it doesn't work properly and the leaf for the Apple logo is missing) but I love the thing to death. I'm so glad I got it because they're only going to get more expensive.
he dose know apple payed to have there product in those movies right?
Grammar......... and obviously he knows that but you didn't get the point
beats also pays for all these adverts, and they are still the most popular headphones besides the crap sound
I think most people will gravitate toward the polycarbonate MacBook as it holds more significance being the first Intel consumer Apple notebook. The Snow G3/G4 may hold a place in some peoples hearts, but most who grew up wanting one ended up ultimately wanting a MacBook
IBMs are "Generic" and hold no "historical significance"? LMAO, you really made yourself look like an idiot with that statement..... I'll forgive you as it was probably just a mistake........ but the collectable value of IBM and Apple is currently about the same, Old vintage Ibooks and old vintage thinkpads are both going for around $60-$100 on ebay.
True, it's just more collectors collect Apple products than lets say PCs.
Honestly I really don't think too many people care much about the more modern stuff.... most collectors are going for Apple II/II+/IIe/IIc, Lisa, Mac Classic, IBM 5150, XT/AT, PC Jr, and the PS/1 PS/2 lines...... the newer stuff isn't really what most consider collector material yet, evidence of that is how little a price they command, and how often you find them in someones trash pile.
+Technology Spotlight To a collector there is a big difference between an IBM and some random compatible. Apple fanboys may be more vocal in their fanaticism but there are still a lot of IBM collectors even for '90s era computers.
Jeremiah B
"Apple fanboys may be more vocal."
Because they're hipsters.... they invented the internets doncha know ;)
Seriously though, the old Apple II/IIgs lines would be awesome to collect for, the IIgs especially was a pretty capable machine for the time..... in my opinion it could go toe to toe with the Amiga.
.... Macs, atleast in my opinion are kinda boring.
ibm thinkpads with Windows xp are still useable
This is very informative and eye opening over collectibiliy of computers. Will there be any other version of collectibility of iPhones, iPads or so?
I bought a bondi clamshell to complete my collection (bondi iMac, bondi keyboard, bondi mouse). I love it!
7 years later in 2023, I still managed to get a G3 Snow iBook for $30. Granted, it is the slowest G3 Snow iBook. 500MHz, 64MB of included RAM, CD-ROM drive, and no included Airport card or hard drive. But everything except for the battery works on it. The display is gorgeous, the case is a little scratched up as any 22 year old clear plastic would be, and some of the shielding and a couple of screws are missing from the inside, but it's otherwise amazing.
I've only kept a few Macs over the years, the PowerBook 100, PowerBook 2400c (modified with a clear body from Japan and a faster CPU) and PowerBook Titanium 1Ghz). The iBook was always a real POS, specifically because of Mac OS (you were able to pause the entire system by just holding down the mouse buttons). The desktop computers that I've always enjoyed collecting are SGI's, SGI Indy, O2, Octane, Fire and my favorite, the Tezro in which mine is the fastest model that was available with max out memory. I also have a few Sun workstations, a Mac Cube and a Amigo 5000. Miscellaneous laptops, IBM butterfly, HP OmniBook 800, Psion NetBook, 5 MX, etc. The Psions are still my favorite portable computers even today, the 5MX specifically absolutely blew away my Newton when it was first introduced, I mean it had full multitasking.
Anyone remember how insanely overclockable those first iBook G3's were? Just move a couple SMD resistors around on the motherboard. It was actually FAR harder to disassemble and reassemble it than to do the soldering. I've got an old grainy photograph of me hunched over a magnifying light doing the task to my friend's iBook. If I recall right, they were underclocked to conserve on power. They were at least 400MHz chips, clocked at 300. We took his up to 333 or 366 if I remember right, whatever was the easiest next step up.

Still like the scene from Independence Day when Jeff Goldblume jams a CD in a non-existent CD drive.
i just bought a 1.42ghz ibook g4 with 1.5gb of ram and i love jt!
everything is collectable as long as you hold onto it
Now is definitely the time to buy iBook G4's. I found one online for about $30 that included a protective case. I must admit, they're awesome for the current price.
Wow! We are definitely Apple buddies! This was really interesting, i have never seen the clamshell ibook! :O wooooooow, what a throwback in time... genius!
Late 486 and early Pentium laptops have actually become somewhat collectible because of their ability to run older mid 90s PC games smoothly, but only very specific models that are considered to be in the "sweet spot" of mid 90s gaming PCs usually around the time of Windows 95's launch. Generally they are the high end models that would have been pretty expensive back in the day and not super common today, especially in working condition.
I used to use the iBook Special Edition Graphite 366mHz clamshell to render my animations during college. The hard drive just went, so I purchased a replacement ATA hard drive. The clamshell edition was really nice to type on.
