Drivers were complaining about the event being too long and demanding. They raced for 12 hours and 1017 kilometers (632 miles) in three days. That's three times the distance of a modern WRC event. It was insane. That's what Henri himself also said when interviewed during the rally. Lancia drivers were not too happy with how the new Delta S4 handled. Henri was driving way faster than anyone else, probably taking more risks than his competitors. He had a flu. All in all, a driver error is a very probable cause of the crash. But it isn't the cause of the deaths of Henri and Sergio. The car and the event were simply not safe enough.

They now arrange a race in Henri and Sergio's honor each year called the race of champions, with rally, F1, Nascar etc. drivers competing against each other. It was founded by rally legend Michelle Mouton.

Rally in itself has been around since at least the 1950s but got more and more proffesional in the 70s and then group b in the 80s.
He was a proffesional, only the proffesional drivers drove these cars but they where hard to handle and he was one of those drivers who liked to drive all out.

the rumours were that Lancia either removed (or simply omitted to fit) a protective shield below the fuel tank(s) and a branch of a tree punctured the tank causing the fire. The tanks in the Delta S4 were basically below the driver & co-driver and it was the fire that caused the two deaths. Further, many of the materials used at the time (e.g. magnesium alloy) were actually highly flammable 😞 P.S. language definitely acceptable in this case: I feel the same.

It's confirmed that it didn't have a skidplate as it was only needed for the gravel rallies and this rally was tarmac only. But the car landed on the roof so it's unlikely that it's the one thing that would have saved them. It was also kevlar which is just plastic reinforced with kevlar which is very much flammable, magnesium alloy on the other hand tend to hold up really well in extreme heat.

The car landed backwards, near vertically on its tail. The gas tank was punctured by a broken chassis tube, not a branch. That is what was reported at the time Both of these observations are endorsed by examining the crumpling of the wrecked chassis, and partly confirmed by the only video, taken from the next ridge. Said chassis was pulled out upside down because it had tumbled a half turn.down hill after the initial impact.
The tubular structure was inside the KRP - which is puncture resistant - shell and an external plate wouldn:t have made a difference.

I remember when this happened. I was 9yo at the time and being a Finn myself, this was etched deep into my memories.

Henri got fever and all in that day, but he still decided to go. Bad mistake. But as a finn, it's great to see you react and feel that disaster! ❤️❤️❤️ God bess you! 🙌

There is a good video on a car in this video. The video shows how the car was developed and how insane group B cars actually were. The video is named Lancia Delta S4- The car that ended group B

To understand the safety you have to understand Corsica. This place has a turn every 50 meters, plus to say it is quite a dangerous island i faor for me. You can't have a wall at every turn and anyway coming fast it would not be enough because turns are strong.

DTM. Deutche Touring Masters racing. Those guys are pretty insane. Lots of contact. Regular street cars made into race cars from factory. I think it started in the 90's still going on today. Probably best thing after rally.

There is a theory that the car's gas pedal probably got stuck to the bottom, because the floor was relatively thin.

Not every body was walking around with a camcorder (video camera) back then... a descent camcorder would have been the equivalent of about $1500+ back then... not as useful or convenient as todays multipurpose phones connected to internet, with cameras etc...just a large (compared to a smart phone) device that recorded video with a typical battery life of 2 - 4 hours... hence very few people had such devices on hand... its less than 15 years ago when the average person had a phone that could even record video (memory would be full in 30 minutes or less) and the video quality was way worse than some of camcorders from 1990s

The fuel cell was punctured and the car immediately engulfed in flames plus any injuries that occurred in the crash they had no time to get out.. Don't think they really had flame resistant suits yet then either.
