    Just came back and reviewed this as I needed to tie up some new snells after using up my backlog of three years worth of pre-tied rigs. Thanks for simple and easy to follow instructions.

    This is genius and the best knot for big hooks. Thanks Catfish Dave. I've watched this video at least 20 times. You rock man and it's ok that you bought a boat, I don't care what anybody says. My favorite video of yours to this day is 'I don't need a boat' when you landed 2 decent fish at the same time with that metal music playing but, I watch everything you put out. Keep it up.

    I learned this method from you and have found that the bottom half of an old ball point pen works real well for a straw. It tapers down to make cinching the knot tight easier for me.

    Thank you Dave for doing this video. I have struggled with this knot and this is the easiest by far for me.

    Love the way you tied that snell. I will be doing so from now on. Thanks for all the teaching you do!

    Congrats for showing the only correct way of tying a perfect SnellKnot! The knot is also known in some parts of the US as a NailKnot.
    It was originally invented for tying the line to hooks with Spade End (no eye). I've been using this exact knot for tying the line or the leader to Spade End hooks for more than 40 years; never failed!
    Works perfect on Circle Hooks too. Be aware that some brands have rough edges inside the eye of the hook, if not manufactured with a brazed eye; a piece of rubber (bicycle air tubes), or very short sleeve of Tubular Shrinking Foil (for electronics), or simply an O-ring will prevent damage to the knot.
    I even use this knot for Mustad Spade End hooks size #32, when tying with 0.08mm mono. They are SMALL! (only 3½mm long). I bought laboratory injection syringes with extra thin cannulas (injection needles), using the needles as ultra thin tubes to tie these knots on #32 hooks.
    By the way, the syringes with the needles attached comes in handy when injecting air into worms and small dead fishes, thus creating floating baits; however, very long laboratory injection needles (20cm to 25cm) are needed for this specific purpose.
    Tubing material suitable for tying this knot can be obtained from different sources, like Spray Cans (deo), or Ball Pens, and thinner tubing from for example Perfume Flasks.
    The best to use as very thin tubes are needles from common injection syringes.
    This knot interlocks the main line entirely with all the loops on the shank of the hook, contrary to most other knots claimed to be "best" for Circle Hooks (and Spade End Hooks). Some other socalled "easy SnellKnots" does not fully secure the line at the point where it, after going through the eye of a Circle Hook, only enters the first loop on the hook shank; if pressure occurs on the line/leader towards the hook the knot might loosen up. Neither does such knots protect the main line as it is exposed on the outside of the knot itself. Finally, such knots seldom align the line/leader correct with the hook; remember, Circle Hooks are designed for the fish to hook itself. The knot must be perfect in any imaginable way.
    It's fair to mention that a variation of this knot can be tied without any tube; BUT if tying the knot without a tube unfortunately the line itself will inevitably end up being twisted/kinked throughout the whole knot when the loops are turned around the hook shank, thus weakening the strength of the leader/main line.
    With a little practice it's very easy to tie this genuine Snell Knot; even far out on the ocean in a rolling boat. I always keep a sortiment of different sizes of tubes in my tackle box.

    Is there a reason most cat fishermen use a snell instead of a palomar? I’ve always used a palomar and haven’t had a problem although I’ve not caught anything over 50 lbs either. I always liked it because I could tie it in the dark without having to look at what I’m doing.

    • @jamesloerzel4377
      @jamesloerzel4377 6 лет назад +3

      With a J hook a Palmer or surgeons knot is fine, you can also use a trilene knot. The advantage of a snell knot on a circle hook is it pushes the hook forward just a little increasing the hook up ratio.
