  • The Horizon class is a class of air-defence destroyers in service with the French Navy and the Italian Navy, designated as destroyers using NATO classification. The programme started as the Common New Generation Frigate (CNGF), a multi-national collaboration to produce a new generation of air-defence frigates. In Italy the class is known as the Orizzonte class, which translates to "horizon" in French and English. The UK then joined France and Italy in the Horizon-class frigate programme; however, differing national requirements, workshare arguments and delays led to the UK withdrawing on 26 April 1999 and starting its own national project, the Type 45 destroyer.

I really love the looks into modern warships - information on them seems a little more difficult to come by (for obvious reasons), than the cold-war/wartime ships. Loved the video!

Back when we shared design histories with other nations but made them better... Oh dear Type 31...

The Smart-L radar has a range closer to 250 miles, not 25.
Like the daring class destroyer, these are let down by the small number of missiles they carry.

im pretty sure i said 250, the script i have that i used states "1 SMART-L or as its designated 1046 EW D band radar with built in IFF. effective range of detection is 250NM."

@@TheShipYard2 I assumed that's what your script said. but if you jump in at 6 minutes and 25 seconds, you will find that you misspoke.

Are there any plans of refitting the French vessels with a 76 mm Sevrepont on the stern? It seems that the stern of the ships would be quite weak in the CIWS department, in my uneducated opinion...

    • @TheShipYard2
      @TheShipYard2  3 года назад +1

There is a tendency to mount them on broadsides as you only minimal amounts. Sticking one on the hanger is good for small ships as they only need one and they can turn to put the weapon on arc’s. Larger ships tend not to have them aft. Having 3 is a over compensation

    • @marcogerges3419

@@TheShipYard2 Aha, thanks. But the two forward guns can’t cover the stern for obvious reasons. The US destroyers foregoing the forward CIWS but leaving the aft one mounted seems to show a trend towards mounting CIWS aft to cover the not so stealthy sterns of warships.
My point is. I think the french vessels definitely would need something to cover their sterns. The 76 in the sevrepont mount seems ideal since it doesn’t penetrate the hull or hanger. Again, this is my very uneducated opinion. Keep up the great work!

@@paultanton4307 From what I heard those are great manpad systems but aren’t they vulnerable to saturation attacks? Seems like a 76 mm with DAVIDE/STRALES would be a better option.

why didnt they do a stock standard design then had a build your own that way all nations are happy and each can have their respective weapon systems

Not too sure why they didn’t, but if you look at the horizon lads compared to the type 45, it’s pretty much the same hull, just different superstructure,

The term "destroyer" is an Anglo-Saxon term not used in the French Navy.
The term "first rank frigate" would be more in French terminology.

Perhaps you need to check with the navies concerned to verify if each ships pronouns are he, she or it, instead of randomly wandering back and forth.😁

The 76mm strales variant is far bettea ciws than any other western traditional 20-30mm ciws.
