Lifegems also stack, both increasing the total healed and the speed of healing, at least in the scholar version. Also the Sorcerer can soul arrow cheese ogres in certain areas for 1k souls each! Early on this can be 2 or very nearly 2 levels right at the start! Much better than the 50 you get for the normal undead in the area at the start of the Forest of Fallen Giants, the ogre in the river near the 1st bonfire only agroes if hit or you get really close to him. Early in it took me about 16-18 soul arrows to kill him! Now my stats are in the 40's and im not sure because he isnt respawning now! Oh yeah you can farm an area of undead till they stop respawning but there is a covenant in majula that will respawn them infinitely, but also disable summons for bosses so if you want or need to summon help make sure you seek out the cat in majula and abandon the covenant before fighting a boss you may even see some enemies despawn making the trip back to the boss easier!
Mont and everyone, here's a helpful tip regarding durability. Right now, I'm trying the no bonfire run so equipment, ring, and weapon are degrading over time through damage taken and dealt. Being that I am being very careful with my soul memory, I am also avoiding using and buying repair powder. So what can you do to recover durability without much loss? First option is give up and use the bonfire! ... Moving on with the jokes. Second option is break them. While it's sad that you're upgraded items are broken, you can go to a blacksmith to get them fixed for soul payment. Third option is do a co-op or invasion. This is the best option since after you go back to your world (alive), your equipment (including those in inventory are all fixed). This brings back your estus count as well. Now, remember that if you do happen to die it will be trickier. I have invaded and lost (but the host died by aggro enemy - result might vary), and recovered durability and flasks. I was sent back to Drangleic because it's the last bonfire I lit. While I was still in human form, I had to recover my souls. Dying in another world had its risk because I had to survive in many locations to recover the souls. While people suggest Santier's spear for this run, I recommend trying out other weapons that you rarely use. I find the bandit greataxe to be fairly interesting with its short range and maneuverability. Hope you find it helpful.
bandit greataxe/ dragonslayers crescent axe are excellent for dishing out high dmg and fast atk times. i also like using Havels Heavy Hambone Hammer. question...can you do it on NG+, or it has to be a fresh character?
I found crescent axe and it's pretty good with its reach. And no idea on NG+. Most people start fresh with new character. My assumption is that you can't do it after NG ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
In my opinion life gems are great in combat - you can move at walking pace while using them whereas estus requires you to stand completely still. I just discovered that healing items can be used while on ladders also which is extremely helpful in some situations where and enemy can't climb ladders.
My favorite starting class is deprived, Sense they start at the lowest level and all their class points are evenly set at 4 it gives them the most flexibility when respecing. Their largest downside of less starting gear can be completely negated by the fact they start with the imported armor and you can grab a free dagger in the tutorial area. Majula has a shield in the tunnel leading towards heide tower. While i wont say they are the best class, in the long run for several playthroughs they are the best in my opinion sense everything the other classes have can naturally be found where as your starting stats can never be respeced.
Re-played again and again, great, fun game. Power stancing is so much fun, trying out different weapon combos and the animation. Warp sword and scimitar are great but I preferred rapier in right and Berserker in left, always a bow for sniping! Waiting for DS3.............
***** In this video? Nah, this is just PS4 footage. Sometimes I apply a very slight edit to contrast in editing just to improve contrast/saturation/colour levels, but that's it. In the videos which do feature PC footage (my DLC playthrough for DaS2 on PC for example) I do have GeDoSaTo though.
I got Dark souls 1 when it came out, never beat it, I got to Anor Londo and the secret boss there. I gave up at that point, years later dark souls 3 is out already, so I decided to try it, and I beat it. I was quite proud of myself lol, now I'm playing dark souls 2 and I'm flying through it, going back to ds1 after I beat it.
The tip about the knight being far better than other classes is silly. Cleric has decent faith, vit, and str. While the cleric does have low int and end you start with the mace. The weapon is basically the best very early game weapon. Plus, you can quickly make up for lower stats after killing giant. The mace makes up for cleric's shortcomings While the knight armor is good you can find it soon after dragonrider & broadsword is obtainable for 1.7k from blacksmith. Very early game.
I hope you enjoy it! Elden Ring isn't too far off, so you'll have to beat DaS2 and get ready for that too. Playing them at launch is a unique experience
@@SilverMont dont forget the return to drangleic event in 3 days, there these community run events for every soils game where we all start a new characted and enable online and invasions. It feels like launch again (:
I usually start with the swordsman class so i can powerstance starter weapon early on. After i get the hiedes knight spear, I use it for a while to cheese a few bosses become its broken early game. Once i get to iron keep, i farm for 2 blacksteel katana's and get them to max with poison on them. The dual katana can carry rest of game. Once i beat the game, i get the watcher greatsword and defender greatsword to powrrstance them, along with bow of longing, then I max those out, and proceed to use those at NG+. Also, dragonrider greatbow is a good option for range until you beat nashandra and get the bow of longing. Try to get dex to 40, them invest in strenght up to level 30, and even out stats except for attunement after that. Hope this helps as a kind of starter class guide for people who want to powerstance.
I’m late. I’ve played Dark Souls Remastered and III several times as well as having put a good bit of time into Bloodborne. Ready to finally have completed the trilogy
Agility/Adaptability was the reason I dropped the game shortly after the first boss. If you don't know about that stat, you feel totally gimped and cheesed. I legitimately thought hitboxes were broken because I expected DS1 rolls. I'm currently prepping to actually give the game a fair chance.
This was actually really helpful. I am close to finishing the final DLC for DS3 (Ringed City) and I plan on starting DS2: SOTFS soon on twitch. I’m wicked excited.
i bout the game today and am very thankful for you explaining the mechanics since there are indeed notable differences between ds2 and 3 wich was my entry into the series.
Ah, there definitely are! Dark Souls II stands out, somewhat. I've made a starter guide for the first and second, but I don't know if I'll need to make one for the third, as it's fairly simple if you've played any of the others!
14:00 "The knight is actually *too* good. None of the others really have advantages stronger than the knight's." I cannot disagree with you more. If you're new, sorcerer is a fantastic way to go. More experiences players probably have a harder time appreciating just how extraordinarily useful it is to be able to do decent damage at range. Remember that you titled this video "Starter Guide." New players aren't going to be having a great time getting up close and personal with everything. Having good raged attacks you can use when you don't feel comfortable going melee is a godsend.
+ZeroSpawn47 But sorcery makes you feel like a casul. My second sorceress character turned into a Zwei wielding Smelter badass at the end of the game. I couldn't stand using magic all the time.
+ZeroSpawn47 I've watched newbs play almost every class in DaS2 and they always seem to struggle a lot with Sorcerer, because you have a rubbish shield, very low health and your dagger is only good for backstabbing, for the most part. Yeah, the soul arrow is super good... for about 5 minutes. Once you reach the point where it barely chips enemy health and you can't kill them before they reach you, new players invariably struggle. Plus it kinda introduces them to a playstyle that won't work very well in the long run. The "hit and run" strategy. New player as Sorcerer vs Pursuer is not a pretty sight, haha.
+Bergonath Did you miss the part where I said "If you're *new*" or "More experiences players probably have a harder time appreciating just how extraordinarily useful it is to be able to do decent damage at range." or the part where I said " *New players* aren't going to be having a great time getting up close and personal with everything. Having good raged attacks you can use when you don't feel comfortable going melee is a godsend." Once you get better at the game and get more comfortable with melee, you can switch to that if you want. One of the great things about DS2 is how easy it is to switch builds and transition into different play styles. But if you're new. Sorcery is a good place to start, so you're not overwhelmed by everything in the beginning.
+ZeroSpawn47 But that's the thing, Sorcery doesn't teach you melee play, and the game is almost entirely based around melee. Yeah, it's useful to have ranged options, but that's why you can pick up a bow or some throwing knives. I'm speaking about practical stuff, and I watched quite a lot of people (press or otherwise) who had never touched Dark Souls before, playing from the start of the game. And it was always the Sorcerers who had trouble. I mean yeah, you can't use that group of like 20-30 people and apply it for the entire playerbase, but I think it's a very good indication.
It might be the worst as far as mechanics go, like hitboxes, the health bar decreasing after you die. Some of the worst mobs and underwelming bosses, terrible run backs, but man do these areas look so cool, some of the best looking areas in my opinion. Thats why im giving it another shot this weekend when it comes in the mail . I just bought it a second time off ebay

I just started Dark Souls Remastered on the Switch. I never gamed until 2017 as a 26 year old. I did it for Zelda Breath of the Wild, which led me to Skyrim which led me to this. I’m very thorough so am looking forward to playing this for rest of this pandemic and earning my gamer badge 🥳😝🤓
I’m a newbie and this guide is useful, especially about hollowing. My character has a moustache and he’d started to look like Freddie Mercury on his final video 😂
I'm a bit late but i wanted to ask you a thing. I have 150+ hours on ds1 and i played a lot on the crits and parry. I tried to parry some enemies in ds2 but i hadn't the possibility to crit them. Is the crit still a good way to deal damage? And how the parry works in ds2?
Very nice guide. I'll be starting this game once I finish Horizon. I already have Dark Souls 3 (haven't started) but I want to play this first. I just finished Bloodborne and my friends keep telling me that Dark Souls is easier compared to BB but I don't buy that. We'll see..
Poison whip, for inflicting poison on the ogres through the doorways in Aldia's Keep. to safely farm petrified dragon bones from the other enemies in that area.
+Silver Mont Hi Alex in Dark souls 1 each class had a quince trait Knight has higher HP scaling that all of the other classes. Thief has an inmate chital modifier. Bandit has boosted R2 damage Warrior has boosted R1 damage Sorcerer has a magic damage multilayer (Cleric and pyro has this boost for there starting spell school) I can't really the rest sorry. (I am 90% shore that this trend carry over into DS2 as well.)
destruction42k Hmm... I've never heard of that before, I am fairly certain that the only difference between the starting classes is their gear and initial stats, but they don't have unique advantages such as those. I could test it though, it wouldn't be hard to get a battle axe, for example, and take it to 14 str 9 dex (the bandit starting stats) and see if it does the same damage
Idk much about dark souls but my friends have been telling me I should try the series out because it's really fun and it just so turns out that dark sould 2 is on sale for 10 dollars in the store so I'm getting it and I'm going to watch these videos because it's a known fact these games are hard asf
hey can you help me its my first time playing souls games and started with DS2 it seems i cant go on because i cant fight the enemies properly and i dont know where to go im still stucked at majula and dunno what and where to go
Did you speak to the NPCs? The Emerald Herald and Saulden explain where most of the paths will lead - you'll be wanting to take the one that leads to the Forest of Fallen Giants.
Its too late to thanks but Thanks! been progressing for 3 days and going well because i thought talking multiple times to an npc would do nothing and says the same thing
Has the intro to DS2 ever been explained, I mean what is with the lake and dead souls coming out of it, and does your character go to an alternate world or something? In DS the intro explained the war between Gwyn and the undying dragons, but this one doesn't really explain that. The intro shows a women holding her child, but the next scene there's an old women, who appears to be similar to the group of fire keepers in the first explorable area! This is just a guess but is it possible that the old women in the intro was the young lady holding the baby in the flash back, and the player's character was the infant in the flash back, making the player's character the child of a fire keeper, and everything shown in the intro was a mother telling her child a story and her child's destiny!?
+mal bhet The scene with the woman and her child has a hand reaching out in first person (the one belonging to the player character, I'd assume), followed by the two of them melting (symbolizing their loss). The main character then seeks out an old fire keeper for one reason or another, learns of the long-dead kingdom of Drangleic, and then moves back in time at its ruins.
+mal bhet I believe they left it pretty vague for DaS2 so you could make up your own story for why your character has been searching for Drangleic - a land rumoured to flourish with souls that might help you

Its so funny how DSR is way better graphics wise than DS2, But i just bought DS2 and i only played DS3 and DSR and I really enjoyed both very much. I hope DS2 does not dissapoint since Miyazaki was absent for that one !
You designed the pheonix parma? Awesome! Such a shame it's kind of a pain in the ass to get! XD I've never used it before, but maybe I'll start now. Do you use it often, I wonder?
I would hope you like how it looks since you designed it. XP I'll definitely start using it! I like your description for the base design better, but I guess since DS2 isn't in Lordran they had to change it.
+Ellie Gray Yeah, I just wrote that flavour text and gave it a name under the assumption they would probably change it, but to give them like... I dunno, the idea I had behind it. And that's still my head-canon for it, lol. The in-game description is actually so vague that I feel like I can continue thinking that, too!
is there a way to have ppl wait in the belltowers to let you win in bell tower invasoins (i need around 20 more wins to get the hidden weapon spell), or is it so random that its too obtuse to work effectively? I finaly figured out what i was doing wrong wtih that coventant so i now have it working properly to get fights, its just such a slow process
current soul memory is 14947555, even if its not in the right range thanks for offering to co-ordinate, i relay apriciate it ^^ (this is one of my longer used files, i went out of my way to get all the spells on it, im down to 3 left, 2 of which i can easily get in a few horus of play, the only one thats tricky is the hidden weapon cause i cant control how i get it as easily)
Nice! I just started Dark Souls II on PS4, thank you Silver Mont! I want to ask: how can I get more torches? I was using the first one to light up some torch sconces and out of nowhere the torch disappear, I realize now it had to do with the countdown timer xd
+Esteban Gaete Flores You'll find 'em in general throughout the game world - there's a decent amount, so unless you're using it constantly, you should be okay for torches! If you wanted to farm them... you could keep killing torch-wielding enemies (who have a high chance to drop them) although remember that enemies despawn entirely after you've killed them around 15 times. But you can join the covenant of champions to keep them spawning forever. Off the top of my head, there's an easily farmable hollow near the second bonfire of Huntman's Copse who drops a torch most of the time
I can't play this very well because it keeps on giving me the tutorial on things betwixt with Xbox controls even though I'm playing on keyboard and mouse with custom keybinds since I'm way too lazy to plug in my controller to play
Can Dark Souls 2 be played a bit more like a slower bloodborn in that I can be build a character focused more on dodging and parrying rather than big shields?
+Zorbu Zinbi Just like with DS1 there will be people new to DS2 for a long time. I, for one, am happy to have a guide so show my friends when they're just starting their grim journey :>

+Noah Peterson there are no brakes on the hype train
Was it worth the wait?
@@zodiacdrifter581 yes Ds3 is the best of the 3 and an amazing game
The best use of life gems is against bosses to heal damage not yet taken, like a regen. This is how I use them. Plus you can move while using!
Yup playing ds2 in 2023, I'm not late
Re-played again and again, great, fun game. Power stancing is so much fun, trying out different weapon combos and the animation. Warp sword and scimitar are great but I preferred rapier in right and Berserker in left, always a bow for sniping! Waiting for DS3.............
+Michele R Aren't we all! Man, I'm excited for the Fashion Souls haha

In this video?
The mace makes up for cleric's shortcomings
While the knight armor is good you can find it soon after dragonrider & broadsword is obtainable for 1.7k from blacksmith. Very early game.
just bought this game and its my first souls game... i think ill bookmark this vid =D
Wow its like the stats were made 10x more conveluted and 100x more obfuscated as ds1 lol
The katanas are always nuts in souls games haha, they are masterworks all, you can't go wrong
Great video
Thanks bro you’re a star!
Man, I started playing ds2 after finishing ds1 yesterday, and it has so many changes that I got so used in ds1. I dont even know what is what.
I’m late.
I’ve played Dark Souls Remastered and III several times as well as having put a good bit of time into Bloodborne.
Ready to finally have completed the trilogy
Just bought this game for $6 let me follow your instructions and see how it goes🤷🏻♂️💪🏻
Just started Dark souls 2 today
Me one week ago
Just started thanks for the detailed video!
I hope you enjoy it! Just keep in mind that it plays pretty damn differently from DaS1/3, just with similar concepts.
i bout the game today and am very thankful for you explaining the mechanics since there are indeed notable differences between ds2 and 3 wich was my entry into the series.
Ah, there definitely are! Dark Souls II stands out, somewhat. I've made a starter guide for the first and second, but I don't know if I'll need to make one for the third, as it's fairly simple if you've played any of the others!
Useful video man
Yeah I’m thinking about installing it again to try to beat it.

"The knight is actually *too* good. None of the others really have advantages stronger than the knight's."
I cannot disagree with you more.
+Bergonath
Did you miss the part where I said "If you're *new*" or "More experiences players probably have a harder time appreciating just how extraordinarily useful it is to be able to do decent damage at range." or the part where I said " *New players* aren't going to be having a great time getting up close and personal with everything. Having good raged attacks you can use when you don't feel comfortable going melee is a godsend."
Once you get better at the game and get more comfortable with melee, you can switch to that if you want.
Silver Mont I couldn't say it better myself. It doesn't really teach you the things that you need the most.
Thank you I just picked up the game, very helpful!
7 years late but now i got my first pc and ready to go
great guide!
I'm close to beating Dark Souls and will start part 2 after. The Mace is my favorite weapon. I hope it's just as good in part 2.
The standard mace? It's not bad at all, can be pretty good when powerstanced!

So elden ring came out and I refuse to buy it until I beat all the Dark souls games. Time to learn the only one I’ve refused to play
Dark Souls II can be harder to get into as it plays very different from the others, but I hope you enjoy it!
Thx man gonna start now
Dark Souls content? Check! Good content? Check! A guy thats named like me? Check! Nah but for real amazing video man have to look more into this gem of a channel
Hello other Alex
That’s awesome that you got to design a shield.
That seems like a fairly logical progression! I would also suggest Red dead redemption 2 and FFXIV as unrelated but very good games
Yay I was looking for that
I’m a newbie and this guide is useful, especially about hollowing.
You can knock them down with a parry and critical them, yeah! The timing and animation are just different
Very nice guide. I'll be starting this game once I finish Horizon. I already have Dark Souls 3 (haven't started) but I want to play this first. I just finished Bloodborne and my friends keep telling me that Dark Souls is easier compared to BB but I don't buy that. We'll see..
Have you done the first Dark Souls?
Not yet. Only have a PS4 console. I sold my PS1 and 2 years ago. I assume DS1 is the hardest, orr maybe Demon Souls.
Now this is a good video. Would like twice, if possible :D
Starting ds 2 now
I’m about to play 5 years late , let’s go
Nah you're never too late to play a game
Haha, you're 5 days ahead of me
Poison whip, for inflicting poison on the ogres through the doorways in Aldia's Keep. to safely farm petrified dragon bones from the other enemies in that area.
+Slappy Bigalow Poison is crazy good in DaS2!
+Silver Mont Hi Alex in Dark souls 1 each class had a quince trait Knight has higher HP scaling that all of the other classes.
Thief has an inmate chital modifier.
Bandit has boosted R2 damage
Warrior has boosted R1 damage
Sorcerer has a magic damage multilayer (Cleric and pyro has this boost for there starting spell school)
I can't really the rest sorry. (I am 90% shore that this trend carry over into DS2 as well.)
destruction42k
Where are you hearing that?
From the dark souls wiki dot. I can confirm the HP thresholds on the knight scaling is correct.
destruction42k
Hmm... I've never heard of that before, I am fairly certain that the only difference between the starting classes is their gear and initial stats, but they don't have unique advantages such as those. I could test it though, it wouldn't be hard to get a battle axe, for example, and take it to 14 str 9 dex (the bandit starting stats) and see if it does the same damage
i was looking over the stuff i was wondering about but what armor set did you use in the soul memory showing? (9:41)
+Dragonite Dragoborn That is the Loyce knight armour on the chest, it's the main stuff I used in my DaS2 scholar LP
cool and thanks
thank you bought the game today after beating dark souls 1 and i’m just stuck. dark souls 2 seems to be a lot harder than dark souls 1
Idk much about dark souls but my friends have been telling me I should try the series out because it's really fun and it just so turns out that dark sould 2 is on sale for 10 dollars in the store so I'm getting it and I'm going to watch these videos because it's a known fact these games are hard asf
As long as you are observant and mindful, that's most of the challenge!
@@SilverMont alright thanks man
16:52 those devilish eyes :D
Those crazy sharp teeth! Lol, never noticed that before.
You forgot the most important change, you can Sprint up the goddamn ladders finally!
Good point!
2022 return to drangleic babey
hey can you help me its my first time playing souls games and started with DS2 it seems i cant go on because i cant fight the enemies properly and i dont know where to go im still stucked at majula and dunno what and where to go
Did you speak to the NPCs? The Emerald Herald and Saulden explain where most of the paths will lead - you'll be wanting to take the one that leads to the Forest of Fallen Giants.
Its too late to thanks but Thanks! been progressing for 3 days and going well because i thought talking multiple times to an npc would do nothing and says the same thing
Ps5 gang were you at
Just bought my ps3 version lmao 😂
+mal bhet I believe they left it pretty vague for DaS2 so you could make up your own story for why your character has been searching for Drangleic - a land rumoured to flourish with souls that might help you
Started just yesterday goal for this year is to finish every fromsoft game aside for Demon Souls or Bloodborne can’t afford a ps console just to play em xd
Its so funny how DSR is way better graphics wise than DS2, But i just bought DS2 and i only played DS3 and DSR
and I really enjoyed both very much. I hope DS2 does not dissapoint since Miyazaki was absent for that one !
You designed the pheonix parma? Awesome! Such a shame it's kind of a pain in the ass to get! XD I've never used it before, but maybe I'll start now. Do you use it often, I wonder?
+Ellie Gray I try and use it all the time, haha. I like how it looks!
So 144 levels to have normal roll as, dark souls 1 had :D Nice....
Nah you needed like uh... 42 ADP if I remember right, off the top of my head. Something in that ball park
is there a way to have ppl wait in the belltowers to let you win in bell tower invasoins (i need around 20 more wins to get the hidden weapon spell), or is it so random that its too obtuse to work effectively? I finaly figured out what i was doing wrong wtih that coventant so i now have it working properly to get fights, its just such a slow process
+michael onorato Ah... maybe? If they are within the same Soul Memory range, you might be able to co-ordinate it I suppose?
current soul memory is 14947555, even if its not in the right range thanks for offering to co-ordinate, i relay apriciate it ^^ (this is one of my longer used files, i went out of my way to get all the spells on it, im down to 3 left, 2 of which i can easily get in a few horus of play, the only one thats tricky is the hidden weapon cause i cant control how i get it as easily)
Off the top of my head, there's an easily farmable hollow near the second bonfire of Huntman's Copse who drops a torch most of the time
Silver Mont thanks for the tip :D
Second half of 2021 about to start ds2 got my plat for the other games
interesting video, good job
I cool little thing is life gems healing stacks not sure how many times it stacks but it does lol
I can't play this very well because it keeps on giving me the tutorial on things betwixt with Xbox controls even though I'm playing on keyboard and mouse with custom keybinds since I'm way too lazy to plug in my controller to play
I never played Dark Souls and started with this game. I'm so lost.
Why would you start with DS2?
@@ItsTaxi8280 Don't know. Got this at a second hand store, that's why.
@@Linda-dd9nt Fair enough. I highly recommend watching the @FightinCowboy walkthrough if you’re lost (I certainly needed it for my first souls game).
Me, every time I play a new Souls game: Damn, they still didn't bring back lifegems.
What’s the armor you used while explaining power stance?
Fume sorcerer chest, one of the dlc crowns, random arm bracers (I think vanarian??) and maybe leather pants?
That sounds about right I think
Can Dark Souls 2 be played a bit more like a slower bloodborn in that I can be build a character focused more on dodging and parrying rather than big shields?
You can do that, yeah. Agile builds with power stancing are very powerful
This would be really helpful, if you made this a year ago
+Zorbu Zinbi Just like with DS1 there will be people new to DS2 for a long time. I, for one, am happy to have a guide so show my friends when they're just starting their grim journey :>
it is helpfull for me. i startet ds2 today(as my first soulsgame) borrowed from a friend to know if i like the game, when i play it myself(like the lets plays).. dont want to buy ds3 "blind"
+Iks Enwie how's the game going?
ddszg dxzxvds surprisingly easy. made 4 bosses and all were dead after max 3 trys without summon (giant, the knight after the giant, the one in heide flame tower and the 3 knights)
Well my uncle let me borrow his dark souls 2 so this is useful af
