I got invaded by a naked man very early. he gave me a +15 zhander, then proceded to dark bead my face. if it weren't for him, I wouldn't be giant dad that I am today, thank you naked invader man
I don't think those two statements contradict each other. What I was saying is, I think it's best to play the game without any prior knowledge of what to expect. But that you should also prepare as best you can for most situations. I,E If you are heading into a new area, don't walk into it holding 20,000 souls etc.
The punishment is part of the learning experience and overall makes the game more enjoyable. I wouldn't have enjoyed my first experience with DaS nearly as much as I did if I had known what was peeking behind every corner and came fully prepared to deal with it.
@@SilverMont I though I was prepared.... I prepared for everything except what was written in the title screen. Noone can prepare to die as many times as this. DS is a game that left me scarred.... Ok now let's go play the second one./

Thank you for making this guide. I started playing Dark Souls a week ago, and I love it!!! There is so much to explore, so many ways to play the game, I am having an amazing time! Even though I died many many times, everything about this game feels so satisfying. The atmosphere, the scenery, the combat system, everything just fits beautifully together. This game really is one of a kind.
This is actually very nice. I wanted to get into dark souls but the whole humanity and hollow thing seemed confusing which held me back for some time. Thanks

This video was incredibly useful for me getting started with Dark Souls - just got it on Switch. Every other video I found about 'beginners tips' assumed so much knowledge of the game mechanics that I didn't know what they were on about. Only just started with the game really (just got to Undead Burg), so still figuring a lot of this stuff out, but really helpful to know this stuff as the game doesn't really explain much to you at all! Even some of the icons I don't know what they refer to - you'd think it would be something they could have fixed in the Remaster, but oh well. Thanks for this!
6 years ago I tried playing Dark Souls because it was interesting but I never understood the game that's why I never played it. Now that I watch the video I can understand the game more and now I just installed it :)
I always like to upgrade my weapons as soon as possible, which means killing Ingward, but I like that the game lets you get a powerful weapon early on if you know how
This is a guide that really respects the game's philosophy and Miyazaki's intent. Spoiler-free and is not spoon-feeding. Most guides out there just straight up tells you what starter gift you should have, what rings you should always wear, OP weapons etc. Thanks for making this content!
I'm glad you get what I was going for! I wanted to make a guide to help explain some of the mechanics that might not be immediately obvious, without just going like "dis wepun OP!" (Although I do have a video on what I considered the most OP weapon as it happens lol. Granted, it was one that you can only really utilise properly in NG+ anyway)
Drake Sword is a very viable weapon until you reach Andre. Once you reach him, you'll be able to upgrade your weapon up to +5, which, if you've increased STR or DEX, should have better damage.
Out of all the videos for beginners i have watched, this one is very organised and comprehensive to a darksouls newbie like myself. Very good quality video mate! appreciate your tips
I wasted a load of money back on 360 when the game was released, died a ton and got frustrated then abandoned it. Now that I'm much more experienced and older I'm giving it another try on xbox one. Can't wait to see what I've missed out on, this guide will help, thanks.
Drake Sword in the RM is still OP, im doing a run with it right now. I never beat the game before on 360. Plan on running it quick now and than having a proper build for NG+.
Important pro tip for new players: If you're struggling or taking too long in a certain area in the game, go to another area. I learned that the hard way when i tried to get past the Catacombs before the second bell. I decided to visit the unexplored areas of the Undead Burg, and had a much easier time with the game and even learned a lot about it.
Thank you. I've been quite anxious looking for videos that tell me enough, but not too much. Also, I've never seen a more chill and lovely tutorial video.

Regarding classes, i find out choosing original class (Pyromancer, Cleric, Sorcerer, Warrior) is more worthwhile than playing hybrid (Knight, Wanderer, Thief, Bandit, Hunter). It is because of the stats, equipment and free basic magic that can be stacked later. If really want to create a hybrid, better create from original classes. Example, if want to create a Paladin, better start with Cleric than Knight because can stack one more healing spell than a Knight would, example at the early game we can stack two healing spells making it 10 charges as Cleric, Knight only get 5 charges, Cleric can just equip heavy armor making it superior than Knight with having more healing spells. Pyromancer is very unique, it is because pyromancy don't scale with any stats that will increase character level, we only need to upgrade pyromancy flame, by means we can be at any level we want but having maxed out pyromancy magic, so even in low level we could have powerful magic as a suprise. Stats wise, unlike Sorcerer and Cleric, we can focus to increase stats we wanted without bothering about stats that increase magic power. It will be hard for beginers because pyromancy magic is hard to come by without knowing where to find it, but 8 charges from free starting pyromancy magic is enough to deal with dificult situations.
***** It's a common problem especially for new players, it is because basically every classes can cross-class with no restriction and magic is everywhere with low requirement, it tempting the player to cross-class, happen to me too. (Same thing happen in other games such as Skyrim) Focused characters will be more powerful but the game force us to change our current way at least a little in certain areas, such as focused Pyromancer will have problem in Lost Izalith, Cleric and Sorcerer will have trouble in Duke Archive, all must have Divine weapon at The Catacomb (at least to make it less annoying), heavily armored character will not have a chance killing Gwyndolin It is like the developer want the player to become jack of all trades, look at Arthorias sword for example, high investment in Intelligent and Faith, it is a sword logically worn by a warrior but as we can see it force us to become both magic and miracle warrior, or else those stats are just wasted.
***** lol yeah, it is unfair isn't it? The game force us to change way in certain areas. But when we know these, we only change our way for those circumstances. Focused character is way more effective in large part of the game
A finally have a good enough PC to play Dark Souls and I find this guide really helpful. The first time I played it in my old PC I had no idea of 90% you said in the video
In the first few areas of the game, i used to ''prevent'' backstabs by putting my shield on my back -- until I realised it did absolutely nothing when I forgot to the one time and saved me so much switching.
I've beaten Dark Souls several times already, but I *still* hadn't quite understood poise (I normally use fast-rolling characters with very little of it). Now I do, thank you so much.
I'm starting Dark Souls 1 in a few minutes. Going in Blind, never played any of them. My copy is still sealed and my PS3 is waiting 😀 Thank you for the awesome guide!
Thank you so much for this guide! I just wanted a quick explanation of stats and classes but its impossible to find anything in the souls community without running into the "git gud" crowd so i really appreciate it
+Gavin Manzi Silver Mont is a me. It's just a nickname from my old RP character, Montciel. When I had a paladin version of him in WoW, it was "Silver Mont" 'cos he strapped like 50 silver swords to his face. When I was changing my user-name a few years ago on xbox live, I wanted something that people would be able to pronounce easily. And I figured both "Silver" and "Mont" are very easy words to say. Instead of like XtremeSephirothSamaSniperBladeXXXGitrektAeris420
0:27 enough said, i’ve heard enough. I’ll go play dark souls without knowing anything, i’ll come back to this video i promise, until then... heh... well i guess i’m about to enter the depths of hell like my experienced friend told me. See you later.
Played it for the first time two years ago but never got past the gargoyles in Undead Parish. Now, preparing for Demon's Souls on PS5, I wanted to give it another try. Started reading some of the game mechanics and was stunned at how noobish I had played the game. Humanity, hollowing, kindling, ... all of this is new to me. Read about the Drake sword, got it and took to the gargoyles in human form so I could summon the sun knight dude to help me defeat them. Dreading the battle that had killed me 100 or so times, I went in without much hope. The battle was over in 30 seconds... Thanks for explaining these mechanics in more depth. I'm starting to really love the series. Hopefully, I can get gud at it some day.
It's a classic beginner trap! As you get used to its high damage, until it's no longer doing good damage, is a nuisance to upgrade, and has no scaling with your stats.
Watching this in 2022… it’s never too late! I came from Elden ring to this, let me tell you something. Elden Ring is the starting game to prep yourself for the real test which is DS1 or DS3 (haven’t played ds3 yet, I want to complete 1 first) Great Great Great video. Still relevant 6 years later.
I think honestly anyone should get into dark souls it can be hard yes but it does so many things well your bound to find something you enjoy about it it has good rpg pve gameplay a unique story to be told and competitive pvp
+knightofparty knightofparty A lot of people feel like they can't get into Dark Souls because it's "too hardcore." Which is a dumb reason, I feel. 'Cos in the end, Dark Souls isn't that hard, you just need persistence and the ability to observe your surroundings for the most part haha
I'm on my first play through Dark Souls and I'm not ashamed to say I've already used some online guides. I'm 39 years old and have a family and a career. I don't have time to spend 16 hours searching every nook and cranny trying to figure out where I need to go next.
Just started playing Dark Souls for the first time, and I wanted to say, thanks a lot for this guide!! I watched so many other videos and I could barely understand what was happening, while others simply said to do whatever. The visuals helped a lot too!! Great guide!!
Thank you so much for explaining the mechanics of Dark Souls. My first From Software game was Sekiro, which is way simpler for me. All this endurance, weapons, stats, and humanity business in DS (my second) had me overwhelmed.
HUUUUUUH I HAVE BEEN NOTICED!!!!!You do not know how long I've wanted some one to respond to a comment on a video from like 4 years ago. This was really helpful thanks.
I know this is really late and you probably won't read it but i just want to say thank you. Back in 2013 i bought Dark Souls because i saw pewdiepie play it and wanted to play it myself. I got stuck on the Gargoyles and stopped playing it. At the start of this year i finally wanted to finish it so i looked for a guide just to explain everything better than the game does. That's how i found this video. Thanks to you i got to finish this masterpiece. I loved everything about it. The gameplay, the lore and of course the Bosses. Soon after i finished DS i pre-ordered DS3, finished it aswell. Loved every second of it. The experience was made a thousand times better by the fact that i played the first one. DS is now my favourite game of all time and right after that DS3. So, thank you Alex. May the sun shine upon this Guide!
Hey, I'm glad it helped! Especially if it helped you get through Dark Souls and enjoy it - playing through back when the game released was one of the best experiences I've had in gaming, so the more who get to experience something similar, the better, I say!
Best and most useful guide I've ever watched. You could be a voice actor. Thanks to you, I have got to enjoy Dark Souls after I gave up on it last year. I would have missed such a great game if it wasn't for you. Subscribed. I also would like to add another tip: In the middle of combat, lower your shield whenever there's a chance for that. I noticed that stamina regeneration slows down considerably when your shield is up, but if you lower the shield, stamina regenerates pretty fast.

It's a common problem especially for new players, it is because basically every classes can cross-class with no restriction and magic is everywhere with low requirement, it tempting the player to cross-class, happen to me too. (Same thing happen in other games such as Skyrim)
Focused characters will be more powerful but the game force us to change our current way at least a little in certain areas, such as focused Pyromancer will have problem in Lost Izalith, Cleric and Sorcerer will have trouble in Duke Archive, all must have Divine weapon at The Catacomb (at least to make it less annoying), heavily armored character will not have a chance killing Gwyndolin
It is like the developer want the player to become jack of all trades, look at Arthorias sword for example, high investment in Intelligent and Faith, it is a sword logically worn by a warrior but as we can see it force us to become both magic and miracle warrior, or else those stats are just wasted.

lol yeah, it is unfair isn't it? The game force us to change way in certain areas. But when we know these, we only change our way for those circumstances. Focused character is way more effective in large part of the game
your clear english is fantastic for people who are not english natives. Thanks!
Started playing 2 days ago so fun yet difficult great game
I started today.
Good luck.
A finally have a good enough PC to play Dark Souls and I find this guide really helpful. The first time I played it in my old PC I had no idea of 90% you said in the video
Wonderful work! I wish I had had this when I started playing.
In the first few areas of the game, i used to ''prevent'' backstabs by putting my shield on my back -- until I realised it did absolutely nothing when I forgot to the one time and saved me so much switching.
You sir...know how to make an intro video.
Well done, well done indeed...✊
Thank you for watching!
I just wanted a quick explanation of stats and classes but its impossible to find anything in the souls community without running into the "git gud" crowd so i really appreciate it
I know exactly what you mean! And I'm glad if this was helpful
Alright, Alex. I think it's been quite long enough....
What the hell is a Silver Mont?
He's already explained it in another video, it's based off of his WoW RP character named Silver Montreal.
Oh, I'm ashamed to have missed that. Nevermind!
+Silver Mont SPOILERS!
I meant Montciel, autocorrect >.
Superb guide bro. Thanks for the insight given. Slowly but surely beginning to understand.
Starting in 2024
I‘m currently playing it as well. It‘s awesome
Most informative and beginner friendly DS1 video I’ve ever watched.
I've been playing off and on for years. But this was still very helpful. Thank you, and keep up the good work.
0:27 enough said, i’ve heard enough. I’ll go play dark souls without knowing anything, i’ll come back to this video i promise, until then... heh... well i guess i’m about to enter the depths of hell like my experienced friend told me. See you later.
Where are you man?
I hear that about the drakes sword.
I bought this today for my switch. It's my first Souls game. Great vid thanks.
“Oh and if you’ve heard of the Drake sword, it will do you more harm than good”. Just when I thought I was ‘gitting gud’
It's a classic beginner trap! As you get used to its high damage, until it's no longer doing good damage, is a nuisance to upgrade, and has no scaling with your stats.
I just got the drake sword, is there any better weapons I can find in the early game that is easy to upgrade and does scale to my stats
Ive played hundreds of hours through each game but was still intrigued by the video
Anyone here just starting dark souls because you want to play Elden rings? I can’t be the only one. xD
I'm just now deciding to pick it all up.
Watching this in 2022… it’s never too late! I came from Elden ring to this, let me tell you something. Elden Ring is the starting game to prep yourself for the real test which is DS1 or DS3 (haven’t played ds3 yet, I want to complete 1 first)
Great Great Great video.
Yep that's about 75 percent of the battle
I'm on my first play through Dark Souls and I'm not ashamed to say I've already used some online guides. I'm 39 years old and have a family and a career. I don't have time to spend 16 hours searching every nook and cranny trying to figure out where I need to go next.
Just purchased it recently and already having trouble.
Incredibly useful vid. Just started playing blind and its hard to find info without spoiling everything at this point.
Glad it's useful for you!
God i hope DS1 will be playable on Xbox One before DS3 comes out...
same here
it was announced bro! it's a ds3 preorder bonus!
Hell yeah :D
Pley fckin pc, u casul
+Marlon Schulz Why?
Just started playing Dark Souls for the first time, and I wanted to say, thanks a lot for this guide!! I watched so many other videos and I could barely understand what was happening, while others simply said to do whatever. The visuals helped a lot too!! Great guide!!
I’ve been playin* dark souls 2 for 3 hours and haven’t leveled up
Thank you so much for explaining the mechanics of Dark Souls. My first From Software game was Sekiro, which is way simpler for me. All this endurance, weapons, stats, and humanity business in DS (my second) had me overwhelmed.
Ah that's reasonable, Sekiro is definitely more action and less "stat" oriented! But once you know the stats, Dark souls becomes a simple affair
Please do ASMR your voice is so soothing lol
I'm still not really sure what ASMR consists of, but some ASMR channel left a comment the other day, maybe I should ask them about it haha
I just want to say thank you.I just got into dark souls and I REALLY needed this.
Ya welcome!
HUUUUUUH I HAVE BEEN NOTICED!!!!!You do not know how long I've wanted some one to respond to a comment on a video from like 4 years ago. This was really helpful thanks.
There is a better weapon, the broken broken straigth sword
Lmao that reference
Man I've been challenge running for two years this is just so calming to me
What sort of challenges have you done?
ramsay bolton?
+Aromatic Ooze I don't understand! What about him?
@@SilverMont I think op is saying you sound similar to him. 🤣😂 Tbh everyone from the North/Midlands in the UK sounds like a GoT character. 😂
Silver Mont Oh i enjoyed it all right ;D
I find this game stressful, not fun.
same
It can be
There's nothing wrong with it, some games just appeal more to certain people, it's not necesarilly that the game is bad or the player is bad
That is a good tip yeah, stamina does replenish much faster when you're not guarding
Brilliant intro vid mate, really appreciate the info without busting any of the surprises!
Just about to start playing Dark souls remastered. My first time playing Any of the souls games. Glad I found your video, your voice is so pleasant to listen to and the video is very informative.
Not gonna lie when you learn an area and clear it easily for grinding purposes, it’s so relaxing and satisfying for me, I do it after every boss fight so far
Well now it's almost 2024 (like you said, never too late) and this helped me out, so cheers :3
I'm glad! I'm also glad the game didn't change a lot making this video out of date haha
