My 8 year old daughter tried to explain that "smell of a horse" thing to me and after meandering through her words she finally took a deep breath and said "Home, It smells like home" It brought tears to my eyes. We live in the suburbs in a subdivision so definitely not her actual home but I believe the home of her heart. It melted me. Country girl at heart for sure. So glad we're getting some land in a couple months so she can live at "home" where her heart is. ❤
My “home” smell will forever be the smell of hay, a barn, chickens, the smell of a horses breath, and the smell of fresh baked bread. I imagine my version of heaven smells like this. So many wonderful memories with these smells.
You can name the 4 mommas after the three fairies from “sleeping beauty “ Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather and the 4th after sleeping beauty “ Aurora” 😁 beautiful animals. Have a blessed day
Horse smells are like a puppy's breath or a newborn baby's neck smells, it is special and calls to your heart. Their love for us is like nothing else, not even a dog! When they bond with you it is irreplaceable. But when they don't it is very apparent.I grew up with horses from a very young age but I had a beautiful little Appaloosa mare my dad got me that hated being ridden and could fake a legit limp so bad you couldn't ride at all but as soon as the saddle was off and she was put back into the pasture she would run like the wind. No matter what I tried she was just not having it so after a year of trying we sold her and she was just fine with her new owner, a young man, so apparently, she was not a girl person's horse.
Your Miah reminds me of my honey. He always did things for me as a surprise. I was so loved by him. His name was Tom and he was a wonderful man. Oh how I miss him.
So funny. I went to go see the goat herd I'm starting my own from and she has a Llama and and alpaca. She said that they're actually not nearly as friendly as they look. Lol nice to see you agree. I think I'm avoid getting them as well and if we ever do meat sheep well add some wool ones in as well. Very good points thank you! Oh yay I bought your book today finally! ☺️ 🥰 so excited to sit it next to my other one once read.
kudos to Miah for making the posts coffee cup high :) I remember him commenting that he didn't want to make the posts too tall for Jess to reach when hanging her linen clothes.
As an Australian who predominantly dries clothes on the line, it’s funny to see you talking about the romance of it. When Miah builds you another one near the permanent house, tell him most Australian clothes lines in that style are 22 feet long and 4-6 strings wide, and can fit sheets and several loads of washing on without needing support because the lines are made of vinyl coated wire so don’t tend to sag as much.
Y’all’s homestead is really growing. Very exciting to see all of the cows and horses. Y’all’s dreams keep becoming a reality. Thank you Jess for sharing.❤️🍁🍂
The curiosity of cows is so endearing 🥰 One small thing though, it's preferable to refer to horses as trained vs. broke. A well trained horse is the furthest thing from broken ❤
The farm has really taken shape and the animals all look happy and well managed. I know what you mean about the smell of a horse! I had to walk down to the coral every day and clean it out and then feed and water twice a day. Hanging out with the horses was my favorite thing to do, they loved to cuddle my neck and let me scratch their necks and just basically love and brush them. Thanks for bringing that wonderful memory to mind! 🥰
Oh my goodness, I LOVE the smell of a stable of horses, it's a sweet pleasant smell. It's been a long time, I don't suppose I will smell that again now I'm an old biddy... sad.
Ms. Jessica, all this in just one year. Our Lord has truly blessed your homestead. The shot of the back of the high tunnels with your green house by their side was, to me, the realization of what all you've accomplished in such a short time. I'd be so proud. Happy birthday Jackson. God bless you.
Hey Jess! Just want you to know I'm praying for you and your family. God has great destiny for each of you - beyond what you know. He is good and faithful!
I love hanging blankets in the cold winter breeze's. They smell so good. FRESH. Clothesline are needed. My dad made my mom's. Outside lines Are so LOVELY..
Thanks for sharing your clothesline time with us; I asked my hubby to build one on about my 55th birthday! I already had the pulleys from a yard sale & he got steel poles from a farmer & our friend poured the cement. Mine has a lifter at my deck end to raise & lower the line & I use spacers to hold the top & bottom line together when the line gets heavy with clothes. I love hanging my bedding out, even in winter, here in Alberta, Canada. I loved seeing all the animals! Many blessings to your family 🤗💕🇨🇦
I had an “Elevator Up” as my children called it. Loved using it and seeing the sheets fly high in the breeze. It disappeared during a remodel of my home--as did my aluminum step ladder. 🥺
Haha, Jess. I've been a mother for 45 yrs. You crack me up with your comments about the things you never thought seeing your life taking the direction and the phrases being used way more than you ever foresaw. You are just too cute, Jess. Yes, ma'am, I love the smell of a horse and the barn smells from when I was a kid. Let me tell u a funny. I've always lived in the country until my mid 30's I moved to Dallas for work. We lived there for about 5 yrs. Hubs and I were driving back to the country and I caught a slight wind of a skunk and I (haha) Kidd you not, we both actually enjoyed the smell of a skunk. The alpacas are living their best lives. Thank you so much Jess for sharing your life and taking me along with you on your fantastic Homesteading journey.
Horses smell good like sage and honey and warm milk. Your cows and horses are beautiful. Your cats and dogs are awesome and you are definitely an awesome pet mom and mom.
Yes !! The fabulous scent of a horse is one only longed for and appreciated by true horse lovers. I just want to shake my head under there mane … just for the pure joy of it❤
Oh Jess, I’m so thankful that you touched on one of my biggest pet peeves with something I’ve noticed East of the Rockies. Being a former Cali girl, we always had our animals spayed or neutered. It was just what you do, well, did.. Then my daughter who was a RCVT worked at a high kill shelter & she would tell me she felt her life sucking from soul. I watched her change so I get it that the people in shelters are totally burnt out. Things have gotten so expensive, look for a Critters Without Litters friends. Take your pets to them & try to help support them, if only by volunteering to help on surgery days. Too many animals are being euthanized across the country because people just don’t think about slowing the population. Thank you for letting me jump into your platform, debby
I remember hanging clothes on the clothesline when I was a child. We had stretchers that would go down the pant legs that would put a nice crease in them when they dried. Sheets smelled so nice after drying all day in the fresh air on it close line. Rarely used a dryer couldn’t afford one when I was young. Grandparents on my dad side had a large farm. They had Jersey’s cows. My grandmother got horned by one I day when I was visiting during the summer. My grandfather never liked us to name any of them since most were beef cattle. But there was one bull I developed a friendship with and named him Curly. He was my hero, he save me from all the jerseys one day, they came into the barn and headed straight toward me and he got in between and blocked her way. My grandfather my dad saw what he had done and was able to swing the gates to move them out. Because they weren’t supposed to be there. Curly was my bud. I was around 8 at time. Watching your homestead brings backs some good memories. Sometime I will have to tell you about when all the hogs got loose and my grandfather, father, and uncle were riding bareback trying to get them back in the barn. I wish I had had it on film. It was hilarious. And these were big hogs. Not those little things!
Hi Jess, love seeing the alpacas! I’m an alpaca Mama too and it’s not just you. The Alpaca Association used to market them as “ The investment you can hug”, and I’ve always thought, yeah if you can catch them first! Most friendly alpacas are the ones born on your farm and worked with at an early age. Also, a corner of that empty greenhouse would be a fine place for a chair and your wheel!😜😊
OH YEAH Jess- the smell of a horse - I have ridden all my life & boy do I miss it- the smell of the saddle , the smell when you brush them- the smell when they snaffle up with you- OH YEAH !!!!!!!
My momma always used her clothes pole to prop up the clothes line. We “borrowed” it to make tents in our playroom, propping one end on a toy shelf and the other on a tall stool. Covered with old drapes it became a covered wagon when we played pioneers, or anything else our imaginations desired!
Jess that stick is called a Clothes Prop I am 71 yrs old & yes I grew up with one actually, a few, as there was 10 children remember. We used to use the clothes props as our pretend horses & we would run around the huge yard we had playing Cowboys & Indians. Wow what a fabulous time & memory. Thanks Jess Cheers Denise- Australia
Hurricane/tropical storm Nicole just left us (central FL) and continued on her way north. Not too bad, just some wind and sloppy rain. But that will dry out in a day or so. Blessings and greetings from central FL.
I love your barn cats and their names; especially Toast! We have some very creative names for ours, too. Suki is my new barn cat. She is also going for her "disconnectomy". Girls outnumber boys around here, 3:1.
Happy Birthday to Jackson. Kids grow up too fast. Love seeing all the animals. Love having a clothes line. I always use a stick in the middle because it tends to stretch more towards the ground.
Ive been pinning to see your pasture animals for ages , thanks Jess.. a few comments here . I was pleased that Mia put up a cloths line for you ,but wasn't sure why he didn't build it from the porch ,which would have made it handy for you ,specially if the porch were covered ( we get a lot of raiin fall and winter where I live ) He could put up a tall post at the far end and it would be plenty tall enough to keep cloths above ground . They make a round contraption especially for clothes lines that you just stand in one spot and move the line instead of walking yourself . At least thats what I grew up with in two homes in the 50s and 70s . Although I'm almost 71 now they must still be available , so much more efficient I think . If you read this you probably know what I talking about. Just getting ready to visit my daughter in hospital just now, she has a bad heart and pneumonia , could use a prayer from you just now , her children are still young in grade 11 and 9 it's bad . God Bless you and your family Jessica, love all you do.....Gail
While watching the video to the end the thought came to me, "Oh, Jess, you are in it, now." So very happy that you got your dream....and that you love it. Farm life looks really good on you.
Jeff Trigg AKA Bobblehead Homestead/ Groovy Eggs Farm had a beloved chicken#2 , who had an adoring fan base and still does even though she's passed on. I live in Alabama and I hope to one day have her offspring chick descendants. I think the story of Jeff and number two would make an adorable children's book.
Yes!!! The smell of a horse. Best thing ever. I'm from Canada, and when I moved to Australia and saw my first horse there, first thing I did was smell him to see if he smelt the same! And they do. 🥰❤️❤️
Yes, you should name them. I have always loved the smell of horses. People think I am crazy when I say that I even like the smell of horse poop. But it reminds me of happy times in my childhood, when I learned to ride a horse. The smell of horses seems to hold everything that is good and wonderful about country life and farming and there is even something sacred that reminds me of God that is wrapped up in the smell of horses. I don’t know what that is, but I know that I feel safe and loved and close to God when I smell horses. Does anyone else experience that? Or am I just crazy? I hope that you and Jackson have a great trip. Happy birthday Jackson.
Happy birthday to Jackson! Rafe is in the leggy teenage stage. So cute. We are supposed to get the storm Nicole on Saturday. Fingers crossed she is gentle for all of us!
Such a beautiful well rounded update ! And to start with you hanging your dresses to dry on that lovingly made clothesline - I have waited for that picture ! Shot in such beautiful light❤️❤️❤️
You inspire me so much. I have learned from you to start off small and never lose faith. Keep believing and you can have your dreams. Keep up the good work. I love your channel.
I love the smell of our horses ❤ When I’m stressed, I either go to the garden or the barn. All I have to do is start brushing our horses and the stress goes away 🤠
About 3 years ago I was asked to care for 3 horses and a miniature donkey having never been around such animals before aside from riding once or twice as a kid with a guide. Pretty much felt unqualified to care for these animals and had the proper amount of anxiety but I knew I would never forgive myself if I didn't try something new. Well, I don't remember if I liked their smell or not but I became enamored with their prehensile lips. Watching them maneuver those lips gave me immense joy. I told someone if there's an afterlife I want to come back as prehensile horse lips.
Yes, horse smells can revive a lot of emotions! My daughter owned and competed with horses from the age of 9 until I sent her off to college, and they were some of the most challenging and bittersweet years of our lives, but the sweet memories come flooding back as soon as the scent floats in range of my senses.
If you still have the lines that Jeremiah put up (double rope for each line), check at a hardware store for clothesline parts for the part that looks like a long C with a small pulley in the hook ends. They come in a few different lengths and are usually used in clothesline setups where you have a 6-8 inch pulley at either end of the line with the "C"s used as you pushed the line out. I had this kind of line setup when I lived In town in a second floor apartment. My lines ran from my porch 50 feet to a tree roughly 20 feet off the ground. I had 3 lines and had 3 "C"s for each line and an inline tightener in each. Please feel free to PM me for more info.
Oh my, absolutely the smell of a horse❤❤❤ Horses woo my soul, I love all animals but awwwww, horses❤ My Mom says that I whinnied and acted like a horse as soon as I could walk but I wouldn't talk and she couldn't figure out how I did it because I wasn't around horses😂 She was afraid I'd never talk, lol😂 I had horses all my life but when my husband was murdered in 2010 I had to sell mine...it's been the longest and loneliest time without him and my horses😢 I raised and trained my horses, Missouri Foxtrotters... But I love all horses❤ Can't wait to see all your new baby calves❤ definitely name all your cows😊❤
I grew up on Long Island before moving here to NC. When we put clothes on the line they came out like cardboard 😂🤣. And if we dared hung a shirt by the sholders...oohwee we were in trouble lol
My 8 year old daughter tried to explain that "smell of a horse" thing to me and after meandering through her words she finally took a deep breath and said "Home, It smells like home" It brought tears to my eyes.

Beautiful just beautiful!
Former horse girl here, read your comment and that scent came flooding back 🥰
My “home” smell will forever be the smell of hay, a barn, chickens, the smell of a horses breath, and the smell of fresh baked bread. I imagine my version of heaven smells like this. So many wonderful memories with these smells.
wow brings tears to my eyes, thnx for sharing.
I too have always loved the smell of horses 🐎
Jess- “Their fiber quality does go down with age. “
Me- “ Yeah, just like the rest of us. “ 😂
Preach 😂😂
😂
LOL!!!
Uhm, yes.
For sure, right! Sitting here debating on whether I have to get back to wearing my knee braces again.
You can name the 4 mommas after the three fairies from “sleeping beauty “ Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather and the 4th after sleeping beauty “ Aurora” 😁 beautiful animals. Have a blessed day

Trick to laundry lines (from someone who grew up with one) put your heaviest clothes on the ends... your lighter items in the middle. 🙂
Longest on the outside, too. Love my clothesline. My electricity bill does too. I rarely use my dryer.
Your Miah reminds me of my honey. He always did things for me as a surprise. I was so loved by him. His name was Tom and he was a wonderful man. Oh how I miss him.
My Dennis was like that. Finest man I ever met. I was blessed. I really miss him.
Horses are amazing.
Totally understand the smell of a horse and the calming effect it has on your soul. If you know, you know. ❤
Yes🥰
When our kids were young, our mantra during the Christmas season was “Ask me no questions, I’ll tell you no lies.” LOL
So funny. I went to go see the goat herd I'm starting my own from and she has a Llama and and alpaca. She said that they're actually not nearly as friendly as they look. Lol nice to see you agree. I think I'm avoid getting them as well and if we ever do meat sheep well add some wool ones in as well. Very good points thank you!

kudos to Miah for making the posts coffee cup high :) I remember him commenting that he didn't want to make the posts too tall for Jess to reach when hanging her linen clothes.
Jess walked away and I’m saying, “ Don’t forget your mug!”
Nothing makes me feel as useful as hanging laundry in the solar and wind dryer. It's pleasing in the most simple of ways.
As an Australian who predominantly dries clothes on the line, it’s funny to see you talking about the romance of it.

Same here in New Zealand, most people use clotheslines, 10m long 4-6 plastic coated lines. Or the umbrella shape ones that spin in the wind :)
Y’all’s homestead is really growing. Very exciting to see all of the cows and horses. Y’all’s dreams keep becoming a reality. Thank you Jess for sharing.❤️🍁🍂
“Us, on our small homestead “ 🤣🤣🤣🤣. Jess, you aren’t small anymore. ❤
I agree that there's something beautiful about laundry blowing softly on the line on a sunny day!
The curiosity of cows is so endearing 🥰 One small thing though, it's preferable to refer to horses as trained vs. broke. A well trained horse is the furthest thing from broken ❤
Yes!
I just have to say, your hair looks fantastic! I can’t stop noticing the color and cut, beautiful movement in the wind! Props to your beautician! ❤
Thank you for showing us around the animals, they are all so lovely.
I LOVE the smell of horses and leather!! ❤️
Seeing your animals make me 😊 happy
Oh my goodness, I LOVE the smell of a stable of horses, it's a sweet pleasant smell. It's been a long time, I don't suppose I will smell that again now I'm an old biddy... sad.

Amen🙏🏻
Those " sticks" are called props. We've always used them. Loved spring cleaning when all quilts were airing out or drying.
I love hanging blankets in the cold winter breeze's.
They smell so good. FRESH. Clothesline are needed. My dad made my mom's. Outside lines
Are so LOVELY..
Yep! We had props too, made out of a tree branch with a good Y crotch to hold the line.
I am so happy to go with you through the pasture and visit with the animals!
Yes, the smell of a damp horse is heaven to me!
Happy Birthday Jackson
Yes. You should DEFINITELY name all of your cows. ❤️
At least the mommas they plan on keeping.
I miss the smell of lime dried sheets. So fresh smelling to climb onto a night.
Lol. I so relate! I realized I was a crazy garden lady when there were more photos of my seedlings and plants than of my kiddos on my phone.
Thank you for being so responsible with your kitties and getting them fixed. So happy to hear :)
Thank you for hanging out with us, Jess. We've missed you
I remember hanging clothes on the clothesline when I was a child. We had stretchers that would go down the pant legs that would put a nice crease in them when they dried. Grandparents on my dad side had a large farm. They had Jersey’s cows. My grandmother got horned by one I day when I was visiting during the summer. For your clothesline, hang the longer things near the ends, and the shorter things in the middle.
Hey Jess 🥰That rocking chair your rocking in the green house, would be so useful in the barn , with all the baby animals. 🫠
Hi Jess, love seeing the alpacas! I’m an alpaca Mama too and it’s not just you. Horses are one of God's best creations and one of my favourites. They are so beautiful, and strong.

Just a thought about the names- name them after the golden girls. Blanche, Sofia, rose, and Dorothy

Hello from Alberta Canada! We are completely different zones (zone 2 here) but you’re still my biggest inspiration to plan my future homestead.
There just ❤love ya home associated with the smell of horses🤗❤👍
Hurricane/tropical storm Nicole just left us (central FL) and continued on her way north. Not too bad, just some wind and sloppy rain. But that will dry out in a day or so. Blessings and greetings from central FL.
I love sheets on a line. I use mine all summer.
Happy Birthday Jackson! Have a fun weekend.
Love! Love! Love! The smell of a horse!,
Happy Birthday Jackson! 17 is a very big year . Jess you are looking radiant . Enjoy your time and special weekend with Jackson.
Horse smell is aroma therapy! Very comforting.
Such a beautiful Serenity you have Jess. Your hair looks fantastic and you need to know it
I love your barn cats and their names; especially Toast! We have some very creative names for ours, too. Suki is my new barn cat. She is also going for her "disconnectomy". Girls outnumber boys around here, 3:1.

That's awesome!🥰
I think you should name the Cows. Flowers would be nice. They aren’t frost tender flowers, but you do love your flowers. ❤🌸
My husband just installed my solar clothes dryer yesterday! LOL Have a blessed day and stay dry.
Jess, I can visualize you setting up your spinning wheel in your greenhouse.
We experienced Nicole today in Florida, it was not to bad. Stay safe everyone
It was yesterday for us. Thankful to not have damage. 🙏🏿
The simple farm tour just makes my heart happy. Thanks for giving us a window. ❤
Yes, you should name them.
I have always loved the smell of horses. People think I am crazy when I say that I even like the smell of horse poop. But it reminds me of happy times in my childhood, when I learned to ride a horse. Such a beautiful well rounded update ! And to start with you hanging your dresses to dry on that lovingly made clothesline - I have waited for that picture ! Shot in such beautiful light❤️❤️❤️
I was raised with horses and their smell comforts me in incredible ways.
You inspire me so much. I have learned from you to start off small and never lose faith. Keep believing and you can have your dreams. Keep up the good work. I love your channel.
It may sound silly but hanging clothes on the line is so peaceful....simple. Great way to start the video!
So glad for the update - seeing the herds (LOL) and hearing the plans. I'm so glad I have people like you all to watch and hear the news.
Yes ..I love the small of horses too! Thanks Jess 🤗❤️
Oh my goodness! The smell of a horse! To me it is the best smell in the world! ❤
I love the smell of our horses ❤
When I’m stressed, I either go to the garden or the barn.
How was the learning curve? The horse notion has struck me. I rode several times as a young teen but now it may be my midlife crisis grabbing me. 🙄
I love that!
Thank you for your reply. 😍
Yes, horse smells can revive a lot of emotions! My daughter owned and competed with horses from the age of 9 until I sent her off to college, and they were some of the most challenging and bittersweet years of our lives, but the sweet memories come flooding back as soon as the scent floats in range of my senses.
I love how social they are with you super sweet
Happy birthday to the child that made you a mother
I loved horse camp. Still remember... "Rise n' fall with the leg on the wall" That was some 50 yrs ago.
Harmonious Co-existance.... I LOVE it!
Awww♥️
Kitties are very social, and yours are adorable.
Another great video, man Poppa T is just AWESOME!
Bocephus! So awesome you named him that. Yes, name the tagged cattle!
I was wondering when we would see the new clothes line in use. Clothes on the line in the fall smells amazing!!
I grew up on Long Island before moving here to NC. When we put clothes on the line they came out like cardboard 😂🤣. And if we dared hung a shirt by the sholders...oohwee we were in trouble lol
Happy Birthday Jackson🎉🎂🎈Great video Jess Y’all have a safe fun weekend ❤️
Lifelong romance with horses. Started riding at 4 years old. Nothing like the smell of a horse!❤️❤️❤️
