I wish I had watched your videos before I started... It would have been so much easier and faster! Please present us with more tutorials! You are the best seamstress I have found on RUclips!

My first olson mask was too big for me. This video was so helpful. I am a complete beginner and I can't believe it worked. It's annoying that you won't really know if the modified pattern is right until you finish the final product. I was like... This looks too small..... Oh well, let's just do what Gail says..... I put on the original olson mask and I measured the extra fabric on my face. I took off a bit over half an inch in length and half inch in width. The pattern looked significantly smaller, but after making the new mask, it came up right for my face!
I can't thank you enough. I'm trying to make a mask for my dad and he has quite a stately nose. I want him to be comfortable and I think I'm able to do that thanks to your video. Thank you!
Awesome and definitely informative! So many instructors (not all) seem to make resizing complicated, like they’re not wanting to give away any secrets.
Thanks for your fantastic videos. Quick make method and this fitting one are really great. just the right amount of information . Interesting and do not take too long to watch. The best I have watched and I have watched a lot.
Fantastic tutorial, thanks so much. I have not sewn in years but with this pattern and direction I feel confident enough to make this. Very helpful You are the best
Thank you! I started mask making about two months ago with the Olson, which I like as an overal construction, but in my opinion not a great fit nor has attractive shaped curves. I then downloaded dozens of other patterns in all shapes and designs with some success but not happy with one detail or another. So, I have since come back to the Olson to adjust. Your tutorial was EXTREMELY HELPFUL! Thanks again!
Oh I totally hear ya! my personal favorite was the 10 by 8 rectangle however the top of the mask came too close to my eyes what I don't like about the Olson mask is the needle holes through the center of the mask this could be letting in particles this way. I am hoping that using the stretch chiffon what she recommends in her most recent video that the needle holes actually won't be holes if that makes any sense my filter will be a solid piece so that should solve that problem but I'm not going to make the filter pocket and the cheek pieces just too much fabric. I will be attaching the filter with either the double-sided Wonder tape or the Lite steam a seam which is only permanent if you iron it on
I have a huge assortment of pattern tries that failed. This is the best way to fix that Olson!!!! Thank you!!!!!!!!!😍😍😍😘😘👌👌👌 re: fabrics -- I do find polyesters hot to breathe through. Anyone else?
have you subscribed to her channel? Because she just put out two recent videos one covering a very extensive research on different fabric combinations and the second one is her one layer chiffon Olson mask no filter pocket if you have not subscribed to her channel then just go to her channel directly and under videos you will see the latest 2 videos
You are amazing Gail, thank you so much! i've been sewing a lot of Olson's masks but i couldn't figure out why I couldn't get the right size for me. I tried to make my own pattern based on the Olson's but still wasn't right. I missed this episode... Thank you again, Gail!! I'm going to make the perfect size for me and my loved ones. Happy sewing! (love, Alee)
So helpful! I kept trying to redraw the mask template with the larger size where I "thought" the increases should be and kept getting frustrated. Also, great tip for practicing with the poly blends first than cutting into my cotton fabrics.
This worked out so nicely when I was resizing a mask today. The resized Olsen Mask was a great fit also. Thank you for all your tutorial and links. They were great.
Finally !! Thank you so much. I have been looking for this kind of video. What about a 3D mask ? Can you change that pattern in the same way? Again thank you. This is great...

You are so talented Gail. Your instructions are also very detailed and makes cutting fabric, adjusting patterns & sewing much more easy, enjoyable & satisfying. Thank you & God bless you!
Hello. I love your videos. Is there anyway you can reload your other video How to Sew the Olson Mask Quickly?. It was so helpful. I was so disappointed when I saw RUclips took it down. It was the best face mask video I've seen thus far.
Man did I need this a few weeks ago! I figured it out but sheesh this is so much simpler.!! Thank you! And that fabric research videdo is what got me here. 🙌👏👏👏👏👏
Awesome! Gail you are GREAT at teaching! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I found this wonderfully done and brilliantly helpful! Boy, I sure needed to understand the key to adjusting the pattern for unique fitting situations. Thank you Gail! 👍👍👍
Thanks for sharing this information! I had to alter a mask because it didn't cover the chin enough and I just extended the bottom cut line by 1". I now see that probably wasn't the right way to do it. If you wanted to know if a pattern needed to be altered before sewing, what are the areas to measure on the face? How would those measurements be compared to the pattern to make the alterations in the correct area(s) of the pattern? Thanks Tracey
Yes, glad you asked, bc I need that info too. Making masks for relatives in other states and mailing them. Really need a way for them to just measure their faces and send me the info. Please let me know the answer to this if any of you find out 😍
@@stacyrice814 I am in the same dilemma making it for my mother and family friends in another country I had my mother's care worker just measure from the bridge of her nose down to her chin. And then I had her measure from the center of her nose to just in front of the ear you could also ask them to take a measurement from the bridge of the nose to the tip of the nose. that would give you an idea whether or not you needed to make the adjustment higher up or down towards the chin I think if you follow her most recent video where she is using the stretch chiffon that will allow for some measurements that might be off a little bit
Thank you. I added a little bottom point and a little length close to the front. Hopefully this time I'll end up with something that goes just slightly under my chin instead of right at it, won't get sucked into my mouth, and will have enough slack to make a nose wire extend through part of the cheeks so I don't get steam blowing up into my eyes. Maybe I should make another mock-up with the length added past instead of at the top point to achieve less chance of fabric in my mouth, without compromising effectiveness. Anyway, this beginning sewer thanks you. My mom made most of my masks, and I only have four, so this is the first one I'm making.
The combination of glasses and a somewhat prominent nose means my the top of my nose HURTS after wearing a mask. But I also have a small head. This would help. My husband's face is too big for XL masks in stores. This technique will help both of us. Thanks!
Can't wait to try this. I have so far made Jesse masks and Craft Passion masks, but the Olson design seems to strike an ideal balance between the two (esp. when it comes to making a lot of masks at one time). Thanks for the great videos, links, and the table of contents which makes it easy to fast-forward to the primary parts of each video.
Thank you so much for doing this! I'm making masks for a non-profit and was finding that the original pattern was a little small. This is EXACTLY what I needed! Thank you!
Just what I need for alterations. I should have found you sooner! Great information from someone I can tell knows her subject! Thank you so much for sharing your video. I want to also make masks that fit and cover all or most of a man’s beard. Any suggestions?
If you need more space near the chin perhaps you want to redraw the curved centerline profile. I might start where the nose is most curvy and then just follow that down a little bit more straight before curving back in for the chin point. That will probably give you more three-dimensional space. I hope that makes sense. Good luck and happy sewing!
I have made multiple "prototypes" in an effort to ensure fit. Have you worked with a style that makes a deeper dip from the nose to lower on the cheek? I have thought it might help with staying closer to my check and below my glasses. Thoughts? I wish I had seen this a few weeks ago, but am thrilled to have found your information and teaching. I haven't sewn in years so appreciate your careful instructions including the reasons for your decisions. I am very aware that without fit, the mask is simply a decoration and comfort is a major factor in safety.
I would just go ahead and take your scissors and cut a deeper profile from the nose point down as low as you wish to go and then over to the cheek corner. So instead of having a more gradual curve you will have more of the ski jump curve.make sure you have the same profile on your mouthpiece and cheek pieces as well. This is one situation where cutting the perimeter actually works pretty well.
Thank YOU for sharing! Recently I received a free pattern for a FM and I made several masks, instead of making a sample first. The masks were all too small. 😩, I’m sorry I hadn’t seen your fantastic video before I started, but I can now go back to making the right size for myself and my sisters....we are not all ‘One size fits all’. I am also confused as to which section is the nose and which is the chin on the pattern. Please me id which is which. Thanks again❣️
If you are looking at the words the top of the curved line above the words is the nose and the bottom of the curved line below the words is the chin. I hope that helps.
I made these masks using your video guide back in March, the instructions were so good i bookmarked your post for future use, now I have returned to remind me how to make some Christmas design masks only to find your link (How to Sew the Olson Mask Quickly! Link ) has been removed by RUclips, apparently for violating RUclipss Terms of Service!!!! :-( This was the best instruction video I had found, do you have it posted anywhere else so I can remind myself how to crack on making my family seasonal masks to help lift the spirits this coming Christmas time.
Gail, Thanks again for excellent instructions and techniques for making masks! I used your last video instructions; how to make mask fast. I was able to quickly make 14 masks using your techniques.
I am having a problem with the masks I made family members. They are telling me that they slip when talking. Can you please tell me what I can do wen remaking their masks? I did put in a wire but, it’s not helping. Thanks for any advice.
Hi I hope to learn more from you. How do I know how to get the size I need to get. How do I know where to make it smaller or larger. Where do I measure?
Do you have the pattern for the mask you altered at 5:48. It didn't show how to attach that elastic. I would love to make one like that. Thank you for a great resizing tutorial.
This info is great! But I have a question about how to alter the center curve. There's a lot of excess fabric (like a bubble) between the nose wire and my mouth. Not sure how to get rid of the excess fabric.
If you cut in maybe just an inch from the center curve to toward the word “Face” and overlap the cut edges and tape them together that way, that may just take out that bubble.
www.ubs.iastate.edu/hat_sizing_chart.html. I have linked hat size charts for various ages. These measurements would be measured horizontally completely around the head above the brow line or the middle of the forehead. By this chart, you can see children are born with a much larger head (proportionately) than an adults. Infants are born with a head that is 60% their adult size. So.....yes, you could just reduce it (or cut it on the seam line and then still sew a 1/4” seam allowance), but I would do that judiciously considering the age of the child, how large-boned they are and the roundness or flatness of their face. Good luck!
@Gail Kollmar This was an excellent explanation on resizing a mask. I'm a novice and have been trying to learn to sew masks. The one thing my "guinea pigs" ask for is more breathing room, they want it not so close to the mouth... if that makes sense. Could you tell me how I should resize the pattern to accomplish that?
I would definitely start with the “Getting Started Enlarged Mask Pattern” that is linked below the video for download. Perhaps that will work just fine. If not, then you will have a better idea of how to adjust from there for a perfect fit. Please let me know how that works out.
Hi Gail! I did some pattern drafting and have a near perfect fit. Except under the chin. The mask doesn’t hug under the chin - but with a dart it’s perfect. How do you incorporate a dart or... make a pattern adjustment to reflect this?
Excellent video, hope I can make it work. I need to make for a very large man with beard. I need nose to chin to be about 7 inches. I read on the revised Olson pattern to cut larger than the actual pattern. Is yours the same size? Thank you!
I started with the Olson pattern and then enlarged it and posted that free pattern on my blog. I enlarged it one inch in the height as I show in the video. I hope that helps. That is all linked in the description below the video.
Brilliant! And just what I needed as so many family members have different shaped faces! Question tho. I will be modifying your original Olson mask pattern and have taken nose to chin and nose to ear measurements of each family member. How do I find what the nose to chin and nose to ear measurements are on your original Olson pattern pieces so I know how much to alter them? Also...thanks so very much for the most recent video on a cooler mask! That will be my next project!
The original Unity Point Health Olson Mask pattern is linked below the video. Make sure you print to scale (the gauge block will measure 1” if printed properly). You can just measure the pattern pieces between the dotted seam lines for the finished size nose to chin. You can subtract about an inch on each side of the cheek for the elastic channels. Happy sewing!
@@gailkollmar8174 in a way that was one of my questions so I guess you have to put the paper pattern up to your face. I'm thinking that now that we will be using the silkystretch chiffon that may help with making generic masks or being a little bit off on measurements for friends or family
I do think that the stretch chiffon with the knit hem fits a variety of faces better than the cotton. I think that little bit of stretch helps and then the different straps help a lot too!
So to be clear, if I want a finished length of say 16cms (nose to under chin) I measure this final measurement from dotted line to dotted line? Many thanks for a great video🙏🏻
The video is really good. However, I am a novice and written instructions with pictures would be most helpful. Do you offer printed instructions and illustrations for this content?
Hi Gail, Your video has some of the best advise I've seen on you tube. I have a question about altering the pattern. I have tweaked the pattern, the chin fits, the nose fits the ear part is right. But as I talk, the mask goes into my mouth. Can you advise what to change? thank you in advance for your help.
Thanks so much for this video! I've been trying to make a good fitting mask sized for my 2 year old and resizing to 80% on the print wasn't quite right.
I wish so too, but have found that it is not just the measurements, but the proportions of the face and the angle/ tilt of the nose and chin that also bear on the way its worn and the comfort of the final result. Please let me know if you have an epiphany for a formula or golden measurement that predicts final wearing comfort for many faces. Thanks!

Gail, Thanks again for excellent instructions and techniques for making masks! I used your last video instructions; how to make mask fast. I was able to quickly make 14 masks using your techniques.
Thank you for making this video its very useful!
I am having a problem with the masks I made family members. They are telling me that they slip when talking. Can you please tell me what I can do wen remaking their masks? I did put in a wire but, it’s not helping. Thanks for any advice.
I'm having the same problem with some of mine. Sure hope we get an answer 😳
How do I measure for the adjustments? I’m not sure how to add and subtract the size. What measurements do I take of the face?
Very helpful! Thank you!
I do not at the moment.....perhaps I can work something up and post.
Wonderful tutorial!
To make this mask for a child would you recommend printing at a reduced percentage so it’s smaller all the way around?
www.ubs.iastate.edu/hat_sizing_chart.html.
Thank you. Was just wondering today, how I was going to alter a mask that was to big.
Five thumbs up!
Thank you so much. Just what I've been looking for.
@@gailkollmar8174 Thank you! I should have said their updated pattern does not include the seam allowance and states to cut with seam allowance.
My enlarged pattern does include the 1/4” seam allowance. Good luck with the 🧔 😷😁
@@gailkollmar8174 Thank you so much. You are awesome! The best instructions & videos.
To clarify, are you making an Olson Mask or a pleated mask?
@@gailkollmar8174 the Olson mask
Thanks so much for this video! I've been trying to make a good fitting mask sized for my 2 year old and resizing to 80% on the print wasn't quite right.
Excellent instruction thank you......it may be helpful if we could measure the our face to see if alteration needs to be done to basic pattern
Thanks!
Hi Gail. I’m interested in the orange mask with the overhead straps. Is this correct? Widen the face on the front #3 and shorten it from the back #4?
Yes, that is about correct! Happy sewing!
Awesome video! Thank you!
Wonderful!!! Thank you so much for this :D. Whoohoooo!
