Anna, the best hack for FPP I learned from Sarah Thomas (moda designer) in a class at my LQS. Take an extra copy of your page and cut it into the individual pieces to make templates. Lay a piece at a time on the fabric, add 1/4”+ and you will ALWAYS have the right size. Do this before you even start - you can call it “prep” like you do for your stitching projects. I also had a rough start with FPP years ago, but now I love it!

Anna, I did paper piecing a few decades ago and loved every minute. When I started, my local quilt shop was giving classes and everyone in the class became addicted to doing it. It's like having a box of chocolates and you know you often say "just one more". Once you started it was so hard to stop. It was the first time I didn't have to worry about meeting up seams or anything. The project just came out perfectly. I fell away from doing it because I ran out of people to give the projects to. I came across RUclipsrs recently who were demoing how to do it and what they were demoing is different from how I learned it but I think how it's being done now is better because it seems like it would be harder to make a mistake. So ,as a way to get started, I would suggest you forget about the instructions you have for now, watch as many youtube videos as you need to, take a deep breath when you're ready, get some scraps and try it while you are following along on the video.Don't overthink it. Just relax, BREATHE, and have fun because I guaranee that you will.

I enjoy paper piecing. It’s not intuitive for me so I always watch a short instructional video before I start to wrap my mind around it again. Once I get going it is great fun. You get in a rhythm and progress is fast. It’s good that you are trying something new. You will get through the learning hump and get over it. Enjoy!

One thing I was taught to do is to crease the lines. So it’s easier to see from the back. It can be tricky as it seems backwards from the way we usually quilt but once you do a few you’ll get in the grove. You can do this!!!❤

Hi Anna, In addition to EPP, I started FPP here in New Hampshire by taking classes with Carol Doak. Back then, she was the only person who wrote books and taught foundation paper piecing. I use her paper to print the patterns on, and I love the process and the precise way points come together. Her star patterns are amazing. Experiment with an easy block first to understand the process - slow and steady like EPP - you will love the results! Have fun, Faye

I have a yarn bowl for my knitting and love it…I want a thread bowl how cute! Only thing I can say about EPP is I’m directionally challenged and so if you have a 3” piece to cover it takes 3 yards of fabric 😂. I love doing EPP but it takes me twice as much fabric and twice as much time. 🤷🏻‍♀️ So take your time and enjoy. Thank you for the visit ❤

Although I enjoy quilting, for past several years I need to have a hand embroidery project in progress especially anything by Kathy Schmitz! I’m just finishing her 2018 pattern for Scented Christmas Bowlies! The pattern has 8 designs with cute Christmas designs embroidered, then hand quilted and then little pillows which I filled with natural crushed dried balsam fir! Right now I’m hand stitching the sweet little “bowlies” and cannot wait to start my next Kathy Schmitz project- “Frosty & Friends”using Moda Snowbound charm pack so each individual snowman (30 in all) has their own winter jacket or scarf. Enjoy your stitch retreat!

I love your little thread bowl (another investment I need to look into). I have a beautiful wooden bowl for my crochet yarn. Quilters have the most interesting stories and experiences!
Paper piecing is a process that requires my concentration so no music, no audio book and no RUclips videos. (I don’t watch tv). My brain needs to get wrapped around the process before I start, It seem backwards to me and the seems inside out and backwards. Once I get started I’m good. It does use a lot of fabric. Get yourself an add a quarter ruler, I also use a very thick postcard for folding over fabric. Watch some RUclips videos, there are some good ones out there.

What a story about the cabin retreat!!! 😲 And that signature quilt is such a treasure! I would like to participate in that sort of project one day. As for FPP, once you get the basic steps down, it's a piece of cake...for the most part. The first FPP I tackled had 47 pieces of fabric! To make an 8" block! Don't know what I was thinking, but it turned out pretty good. I found that the bigger the pieces, the easier it is, at least for me. Since then I've made other FPP blocks and they're always fun and I appreciate the accuracy you can get. So, enjoy learning a new technique and have fun!!!

Thank you for another wonderful video, sweet Anna 💕🌸 The method I learned MANY years ago for foundation paper piecing involved using an Add a Quarter Ruler. I’m sure there are some You Tube videos using this method. I became addicted to it after learning this technique. The ruler has a quarter inch lip on it. The method also uses a piece of card-stock or a postcard. It makes it so easy!!!!

On fpp, it would be good to go to a class. It is good for precise points and tricky designs, but it kind wastes fabric. It really does take a different mind set to do it. Be brave and give it a try. Some people love it. I can do it but for me it is better with scraps. Then the waste doesn't bother me as much. Tip: have extra fabric.

Thanks for the video. I always appreciate them. As far as foundation paper piecing I have done quite a bit of it over the years. Some very complex and some that are very basic. Once you start and wrap your brain around it it isn’t as difficult as it seems. I think because I’m a lefty and my brain is backwards to begin with. It’s not difficult. It’s just one more thing to load up in our arsenal of techniques. Sometimes if I’m doing something very small, I will draft a paper piece pattern to enable me to get something very precise that I otherwise would not. There are lots of RUclips videos out there with directions and techniques to follow. I think for me the best advice I was given is to put a dab of glue on the first step so it doesn’t shift on you also using an at a quarter ruler and a postcard to, fold your fabric over before you cut it. Those things were very helpful. Best of luck we’re here if you need us.

I love paper piecing. Cut the fabric (don't skimp on fabric)for the size stated for #1 and 2 or A&B however yours is labeled and sew the 2 together on the paper. Press and then cut the excess off where you are going to connect your 3rd piece. Sew the 3rd piece on using 1/4 " seam and repeat/press and cut off to 1/4"seam where you are adding section 4
Have quite a few of those bowls for yarn, need to buy one for thread just to complete my bowls! Lol😂😂😂😂❤

I enjoy every one of your videos, short or long especially when you share memories. I didn't know paper piecing was supposed to be hard and just dove in when I pieced the 1930's Farmwife Quilt about 10 years ago. The prep work doesn't have to be too precise because you trim to size after you stitch. As long as the piece of fabric is big enough to cover the section including 1/4 " seams, and you stitch in the order printed on the block it's hard to fail. Perfect corners and points every time! Don't be scared. Just watch a couple of videos. You're going to love it! Just a hint about paper - don't use good copier paper - the thinner the better. My favorite was phone book pages but newsprint would be about the same. I even picked up a pad of tracing paper at the dollar store and taped it to copier paper to run it through the printer since it was too thin to feed by itself. I haven't tried it, but tissue paper might work just as well and would be even easier to remove from the back of the block. I cant wait to hear in a future video what you learn from all of us giving you tips and how you feel about trying something new and scary.

But what I love is that your points, corners and squares turn out so perfect I barely recognize my sewing! Instructions can be a bit overwhelming, but I am a more visual than written word person so I go to you tube instructions. Look around and watch two or three instruction videos and you will get the jest of what the instructions are saying. Good luck with your paper piecing. p.s. I love paper piecing. You can do it Anba, just do one piece at a time. I have seen the bowls made for binding.

Hi Anna - are you familiar with Karen Brown of Just Get It Done Quilts? She made a paper piecing video about 5 months ago and goes step by step through the process. She gives plenty of hints, tips and explanations.

One step at a time for paper piecing a lot faster than English paper pieceing😅😅

Anna I need to know about the fabric that you were showing. You said(Ithink) that it came from Fat Quarter Shop. Is it by the yard or fat quarters? A quilt kit or?? Would love to buy it. Any help that you can give me would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Hi Anna, did you finish the quilt for your grandson going off to college? I'd like to know what pattern you used? I want to make something similar for a friend. Thank you! Love your channels. ❤

Fpp: was so scared when I did my first one. Goofed it up 3 times on my first block.
Advise. Add a quarter ruler a must have
    Pre fold paper
    Lower stitch length to 1.8
Go Slow, it's like paint by numbers.
    Enjoy the process
Watch Kimberly Jolly u tube videos
I'm excited to watch you try a new process. I think you will enjoy, it's faster and easier than wool work.😅

1st my question, what is the name of the cute little bowl to hold my floss ball? Enjoyed your signature quilt from years past and the wondering if these ladies still quilt, a very enjoyable and memorable quilt. Keepsake.

Hi Anna...........rather than the 20 steps.........I think that you need to watch someone doing it. It'll make a whole lot more sense to you and before you know it, it's going to be mindless and come together perfectly. YES........there is PEACE in this technique, once it "clicks" and you won't be able to stop.

I have done a couple foundation paper piecing projects. They sort of make my brain go inside-out.
Yesterday, Riley Blake put out this youtube: ruclips.net/video/H-AukQic5E4/видео.html
I did buy some of the FQ foundation papers for the quilt you want to do (looks great to me), and I think I might try it with this newer method. I might stay more sane. Will let you know! Have a great time!

I stopped counting at 10 RUclips channels with foundation piecing episodes. I recommend Karen Brown @ Just Get It Done Quilts. Relax and DON’T worry about what’s coming next. It’s a great process for those who enjoy
    perfection.
