- On this episode of Epic Drives, Angus MacKenzie and Justin Bell take a Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 from Munich, Germany to Maranello, Italy. Along the way they push the limits on the Autobahn, gaze upon the Alps from the Stelvio Pass and dance with a Ferrari 458 Italia in the hills of Maranello.

The C6 ZR1 is still the greatest production Corvette of all time. Ever. Everything about it is absolutely astounding.
One thing nobody can take away from American cars, they can build a kick ass V8.

Did anyone notice how quiet the ZR1 was when they were cruising? That's just freaking awesome!!! And then they fly on the autobanh at 200mph???!!!! That's one hell of a car!!!!

And you know what the fun is ? Upgrading an american pushord v8 to hp numbers like 800 to 900 hp isn't even that expensive compared to exotics. And you will blow by any Ferrari, lambo or gtr. Torque...
For 26K you can get a 950 hp blown Chevy crate engine... over 1000hp for 39k..
***** not true. it depends on how much money you spend on a crate engine. The better ones come complete, turn key.

@@cyberfoxx2000 you mustn't forget track records to because when a company like ford motor who dominated Lemans when they raced in the 60s did it again 50 years after one Lemans again with the new Ford GT. And don't forget Corvettes dominated until they were forced to lower the horsepower because other manufacturers Could not compete with them.

I prefer the ZR1 over the 458 but both are amazing cars.
They are both wonderful cars. The 458 is a very nice looking car compared to the zr1, but, the sound of the engine in the zr1 sounds so much better ( in my opinion).
***** In my opinion, The Corvette looks and sounds better, I'd much rather own the ZR1. Corvette's have always been my favorite car.
I like the new corvette style over the old. The zo6 that comes out probably next year is going to be amazing and only estimated at 83k. On its first run on the track it beat the zr1. Can't wait to see what they do when they make a c7 zr1...what 700 hp?

Yes, the Corvette's body is in fact plastic. The fiberglass and carbon fiber are types of Fiber-Reinforced Plastic, or FRP. I have a degree in the design, manufacturing, and repair of FRPs.
***** It's not supposed to be a structural part of the vehicle. The Corvette is not a unibody, like most passenger cars. It is a spaceframe, meaning the body is merely there to cover the car's guts. My car is the same way, a Saturn SL2.
***** Yes, they do, which is sad, you're right. It merely is misinformation. I'd rather be in a crash in a Corvette at 70 MPH than an average car, because the Corvette is designed to be safe at much higher impact speeds. That's why true race cars are the safest cars out there. They're designed for massive crashes. So, at normal speeds, a crash is a mere fender bender. Not to mention fire extinguishers, rollcages, 5-, 6-, and 7-point harnesses, etc.
Man those cars could trade blows all day long.
Great video but the US Highway system was not designed after the autobahn. The very first four lane highway system in the world was designed by some civilian engineers that were trained by the military and they designed it in Ft. Leavenworth, KS. Hitler heard about it and sent over engineers to study it and then they went back to Germany and designed the autobahn.
Autobahn is just the dream for any car enthusiast!

6:04 that Super Sonic Plane Like Noise is amazing, put a procharger, better intake maybe lighter exhaust for less than 20k it's still under 100k get it up to 800+whp and it'll beat and super expensive super car

I went from Nurnburg to Vicenza in a rental van and that was pretty fun. I couldnt even be able to fathom how cool it would be in a ZR1
The 458 is magnificent but it appears to me the Americans can build an equal car for half the resources (money). The ZR1 is every bit the equal, perhaps a better than the 458. I would take either if I could drive those European roads.
The 458 sounds like a high-tuned 4-cylinder... Not bad, but so artificial compared to the Corvette V8...
No actually it sounds like an Italian small v8 if you pay attention and listen to all Ferrari v8s of the past they are all high pitched so it's incorrect to say it sounds artificial to the corvette because it's a real sound just a diff size v8
RickyJnum1FAN The 458 DOES sound artificial. Listen to the 360 and 355 for comparison.
gtiman I know ive actually extensively experienced a 355 and a 458 (both spiders, owned by my uncle) and they are barely different sounds because both are rear mounted engines to where you're sitting and give the same sensation, but you cant say artificial because then that would mean that there is such thing as a artificial sound, which the closest thing I can think of would be what they have in BMWs, the 12C and other cars where they pump induction noise through the cars speakers, thats what you call artificial sounds even though its a real sound being projected. So you cannot say 458 has a artificial sound, it just is a different sounding V8 than the ZR1s, both sound good but artificial just isnt the right way to describe it.
Not artificial that knows is what happens when you combine the exotic whine with a v8 :P they want it to still sound high pitched and exotic at high rpms is my guess but the v8 still comes through with sound most of the time

Excellent video! If the ZR1 is that good, then how magnificent will the upcoming Z06 be? I think we can expect even better overall performance from the Z06, especially since Chevy claims the new car broke the track record set by the ZR1. And, get it folks, this is Z06 vs ZR1 that we are talking about here! We're not even talking ZR1 vs ZR1! And the ZR1 is still a great looking car, even though I prefer the overall styling of the C7. But the old car's rear styling looks better to me. Keep up the good works, Chevy!

I would expect Hp for the new ZR1 (if at all it is in the makings) to be well over 700 since the new Z06 has just 50 hp shy of that amount.
I'm just hoping for GM to break the 700hp street production barrier with the Corvette. The team has the chance with the C7 launch now, if they don't get around to it the Camaro guys might grab 700 first (which wouldn't be a bad thing, but apparently the two teams are independent with a rivalry)!

I like how motor trend is justifying the corvette here. It's a really cool thing they did, supporting a car that receives so much criticism from the auto world. They essentially compared it to a ferrari 458, ferrari's best super car to date, and said that they aren't much different. I like this video. I like stelvia pass and I like both the corvette zr1 and the ferrari 458.
you can go 200 in America too, we have states with no speed limits like Montana and we have more than just 2 lanes

rundownaxe There used to be a place in Texas where they would close the highway, then let you go as fast as possible for a mile, then tell you how fast you went. I don't know if they still do it.
The best place to test your car is the Arizona Highway 93, from Hoover Dam to Kingman. It is restricted though.

Well i don`t know a lot about Corvette but in my Country a ZR1 cost the same as a Lamborghini Aventador

Same here, American supercars are not really any cheaper than european ones. I barely see any american sports/supercars here
The reason why in my country american cars are more expensive than european cars is because first the tax here is the same as the pruce of the cars and second are the right hand drive conversion ( in my country it was illegal to drive Left hand drive cars no matter how much money you paid for the cars ) for another comparison a chevrolet camaro ss or a Ford Mustang GT 5.0 here cost as much as a BMW M6 with full option included ( the mustang i reffered to is not the new 2015 mustang )

because of import taxes worth 125 % of the car price plus the shipping fee ,is about 50 % of the car price and so on with other taxes

A pretty basic Vette in Sweden would set you back around the equivalent of 75-80.000$ and that's not even the fast version. The ZR1 would easily cost 120-130.000$ even without all the toys selected
I saw a new Challenger Hellcat for sale at some dealership costing the equivalent of about 80.000$ for example

That must be like 5 people, because the car is made for driving. I have a 1969 (turned into a project a few years back) and me and my grandfather used to drive it every weekend when gas was affordable. Yes, we care for our cars, but the fun is to drive the car. Plus, you get attention outside of your home for your car. That is more rewarding than having it in perfect condition.
I just love the clips where you hear the 458 and ZR1 pass by. Such great exhaust notes from them both.

I know the Ferrari is a huge name. But I do like the ZR1 for its mega power plant. Beautiful scenic! Very nice video clip.

I love the sound of the LS9 in the ZR1...it just sounds gracefull instead of most V8's that tend to sound the same, it almost sounds like a flat plane V8 in a ferrari especially at 9:39.
Seeing the Corvette ZR1 and Ferrari 458 Italia drive side by side shows the sense of respect between the two.
I own Corvette for 11 years and love it now drive 348 Spider :)
I'd give anything to be one of these guys! Of course not at all comparable, but a few years ago I went cross country in my '96M & was the last car off Pike's Peak @ closing time. Was driving slowly, snapping loads of pics but the security guys kept hollering telling me over loudspeaker to hurry up.. so I did. That was one of my epic drives, as without the worry of oncoming traffic I came off rather briskly. :)

I love this Corvette (more so than the 458) and today marks the final day the c6 Corvette is top dog. In many ways I'm sad to see it go but I cannot wait to see what the c7 has to offer

i owned a 58 corvette with 270hp 283 cu. the car was bulletproof and never broke.did the brakes an oil changes myself in the driveway.16 mpg avg.was a great car.on a trip about 24 mpg.0-60 1st-2d 7 sec.a bad ass little cruiser. still the best car you can buy for a reasonable money.

Agreed, I use it for a nice overview of what diff makers get right and wrong and make a shortlist to test drive. Became a fan of Subaru Forrester and the Mx-5 cars after hearing about them like that and after trying them used(some years after they were new on shows), I was agreeing with em, so for now I still listen a fair bit and make notes.

Oh hell man, so looks like we're driving the same car now.......just got one of those ls1 SS with SLP from Pennsylvania 3 weeks ago, it has so many mods I had to find a tuner shop to legally get on the road in New York State - the sound this thing makes - WOW!!!

I have a low mileage stock C5 in the garage. It is beautiful. There are many configurations in the C6, and after I build a pole barn, I'll have space.

No one really realizes just how fast a Corvette is until they drive one.
SMC, or Sheet Molded Compound, panels were produced from 1973 to the current C6 model. SMC panels are created from heated high pressure molds that compress a mixture of fiberglass, resin and catalyst. This new process creates panels that are much smoother than press molded panels, provide tighter tolerances and a superior finish
