2014 Greek Individual Combat Ration 24 Hour MRE Review Meal Ready to Eat Taste Test

- Check out this Hellenic Armed Forces (Greek) 24 hour MRE! Turns out about half of this ration was missing! Here is a list of the missing contents:
2x small packet of Honey
1x pack of Aspirin
1x pack of water purification tablets
6x packets of gel fuel
4x packets of sugar
1x pack creamer
1x packet of Ceylon tea
1x packet of salt
1x packet of Nescafe instant coffee
1x pack of matches
1x metal fuel and cooking holder
1x small pack of toilet paper
That means I am still looking for a complete Hellenic 24 Hour Ration so we can come back with a complete and proper review of a ration that quite frankly has not been properly documented in the U.S. as of yet. This ration seems very complete and compact if you include those missing contents - so it is safe to assume it is actually a very good ration. Still on the hunt after all!
Huge thanks to mremountain.com/ for sending in this ration! Check out MREmountain's shop, he sells US and International Rations!

As a current soldier serving in the Hellenic Presidential Guard, this video makes me incredibly happy for some reason...
Some hints for the "Basic" look of the ration. Rations like these are mainly used on exercises due to the "defensive only " objectives of the army. Field kitchens are usually in close proximity so the use of rations of these type is uncommon and used by the Special Forces branches mainly.
As for the "gouda cheese", this thing is given to the army free of charge lol. Its basically whats left of the cheese production and put inside a tin can.
Edit: Btw, those hardtacks are basically packing almost 200 calories each. Its like eating a loaf of bread really...
Greetings from Greece Steve
What sort of meals do the field kitchens produce?
pretty much anything..from soups to stews to potatoes anything based on the military diet
I'm guessing it's also basic because Greece is basically financially broke. It still gets the job done though.

How is the bankruptcy o your country going?
Steve as a Hellenic Army veteran I have to tell you they dont put any forks knifes etc or toilet paper in the ration itself as we carry all these things on our back on the M71 bag which we are obliged to carry at all times with these things in it plus a flask of water, a small tray, shaving kit, instant coffee and sugar and a pair of clean socks....so the only thing we only need is the ration of canned food itself....
It does contain exactly what Steve added in his video description above and was missing from the one in the video. I don't remember if it contained any tea though.
thessalonician it has tea and nescafee with sugar
Your country is bankrupt congratulations
@@borisjohnson7799 with your help...?
MaGioRaS that makes no sense I have nothing to do with Greece and how they went bankrupt. I am not sure the full story on how exactly they went bankrupt. Maybe poor decisions from their politicians. Maybe the country overspending on certain things. Maybe just bad times in general and nobodys fault. I am not sure as I don't look into that part of this. But their rations do look pretty good.
I love that he’s never changed his format or presentation. It makes all his vids timeless and equally excellent in quality
Nice
I am from Greece. Other Greek MREs used to have a mini alcohol stove, coffee, sugar, napkins etc. Fork and Spoon not included because everyone carries his own. All these canned meals can be found in every super market, except the cheese. It's produced just for the army needs and It's better if you can melt it first. But generally it has much less staff than other MREs.
m.ruclips.net/video/xLt_fRaysiM/видео.html
That's what I mean.
That cheese looks delicious
Holy hell, that's 4B! I packed thousands of those during my service! The ration packs we made contained two pork meals with tomato, curry or lemon sauce, a can of either peas or dolmadakia, gouda cheese and crackers. There was also a smaller bag inside the pack that contained instant coffee, tea, sugar, salt, aspirin, raisins, matches and solid fuel. Thanks for the video!
Did the smaller accessories bag come in a different pack? Or is Steve's ration just, randomly missing its accessory bag?
@Goldmarble
It's missing. It seems that it's been opened and the resealed.
The pack that was excluded had the following:
2x small packet of Honey
1x pack of Aspirin
1x pack of water purification tablets
6x packets of gel fuel
4x packets of sugar
1x pack creamer
1x packet of Ceylon tea
1x packet of salt
1x packet of Nescafe instant coffee
1x pack of matches
1x metal fuel and cooking holder
1x small pack of toilet paper
I’m the trash man I throw trash all over the ring
it is missing, check this out www.mreinfo.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1646
Aspirin with a ration is quite wonderful.
Those cans are a pretty good quality can brand! I am Greek and as one I have served in the army. The food was OK in general (deoending on the cooks). But I have never seen the MRE special forces have! I was amazed with the quality of the food! Awesome vid man!

The Greek MRE is basic because the Greek soldier that fights anywhere inside the Greek territory is always close to a supply line so they don't need a ton of survival material. The Greek army is not an offensive one and it's mostly designed to repel attackers and fight inside the borders hence there's no need for expensive rations that the US military uses for instance.

Good Point.
Who do the Greeks fight with in this day and age? I mean military confrontations.

Older rations also contained heating device with fuel, tea, coffee, water purifications tablets, multivitamin tablet, matches, paper tissues and honey. Last few years we are cutting off expenses so we stick with the absolute basics. I should know .. i am currently serving in the Hellenic Army as a Major of the Supply and Transport Corps. It's your ration, and you can mix whatever components you choose.
Happy little biscuits go right here.
Ok, let me drop some knowledge on you:
- The biscuits are very thick and hard. You will need lots of water to wash them down with.
- The cheese is kinda gross, until you learn how to cook it fondue style. Essentially, you cut it in a star pattern (4 lines, intersecting in the middle) and you put it to cooking. Once it stars to rise you must start turning it, into it's all melted. A little might get burned on the bottom, depending on the heat. Congratulations! You have some nice fondue to enjoy with your biscuits. Once I was taught the trick I even had it at home. Love it!
Christos Damaskos nice!
I would cook the peas the pork and the melted cheese together and break the biscuits into it.

Almost every time I visit Greece, I try local hangouts. I went to one place away from the tourist areas, where they had peas served just like that. They had fresh dill and saffron. I learned Greek Saffron is a red spice that is grown in Northern Greece and harvested in October. It really makes great rice dishes as well. It’s extremely inexpensive in Greece compared to our Country. Also had wild boar that they caught in a mountain village eating all the grapes. The pork was the best I ever had. Greeks like to serve awesome food. Their prepackaged or junk food it so much better than our garbage. I thought this video to be interesting since my Husband’s cousin is currently serving in the Greek Military. What shocks me is there’s no coffee. Greeks love their coffee.

Steve1989MREInfo hey Steve I have to ask, what kinda canteen is that, it's pretty neat
2 vids in a row? You just made my day. For one additional reason as well. I have some insight to offer egarding the MRE!
As a Greek, I served in the northern region of Greece and in the most gruesome - in Greek standard millitary training/service - millitary region, Evros-Orestiada-N.Vyssa.
I served in 503 advanced/concealed force - borderline - infantry battalion (Frontier Defense) from May 2013 to February 2014 and I can confirm that this is the Special Forces standard ration.
It is a tad bit different than the infantry's standard ration. Most specifically the can of pork seasoned with tomato sauce is strictly for the special forces unit.
The "crackers" are called "Διπυρίτης" which is a mixture of rusk and cookie/crackers made of wheat flour, water and baked salt. If it can be preserved and stored in room temperature it can last for many years. It is extremely high on calories, pretty tasteless too and it is considered a common treat in the entire Greek/Hellenic millitary. It's also extremely helpful in snowy regions with low temperature as it can raise blood pressure and eventually keep you warm enough to be able to be alert.
Now as far as it concerns the 4B, the safest bet is that this is slightly incomplete. There are several things missing as fellow Trash Man user commented below.
The standard 4B for infantry contains 1 can of dry meat, (Pork is mostly for special forces) 1 can of Swan (ham), 1 pack of Gouda cheese , 1 can of peas or beans, 1 pack of coffee - standard nescafe, 1 pack of tea, 3 packs of sugar, multivitamins, 4 packs of water purification tablets and a pack of raisins. This is totally a repackaged ration. Lot of content missing. That's pretty much it. Thank you for this Steve!

Good info, Thanks.
Did you really need to write all that...
Hi Steve, I enjoy your videos a lot. I was about to write you what was missing from the pack, but then I read your description. At the Hellenic Army we call the meat that you had Godzilla, as it's considered that it was canned 280 years ago (approx.). Therefore, I still remember that the cheese and the beef was surprisingly nice. The biscuits which are more like a hard rusk they could easily have you stuffed. Story says that these contain several calories for that reason.
Greek style peas is called Arakas in Greek, and is a very tasty and simple to prepare traditional dish (fry chopped onions, add carrot and potato slices, add the peas, half cover with water, add tomato juice, olive oil, pepper, dill, let them boil till most of the water evaporate. When it looks like the canned one (40' approx), you'll have a delicious Arakas).
I served in the logistics core of the Greek Army, The oldest meat I saw was 8 months old from the stamps of the abattoir. And this was the deep frozen stuff (-35C).

Your package is missing the accessory pack. Greek MREs always came with one.
Yeah, it includes your fuel and that little iron thing you cook on, salt, pepper, sugar, coffee, tea, a few water purification tablets just in case, and of course, directions, which show nutritional value among other things which (I don't remember exactly) is quite big, over 4k calories probably. Those biscuits make like half of that value, they're packed with carbs.

I just read some silly comments down below. Guys this is not the normal food soldiers eat during the day in their home units. In your unit you get proper meals (breakfast, lunch ,dinner) This is rations ready to eat during war or maybe exercises when the soldiers won't be able to get proper warm food from their units. Thanks.
When we trained with the Greeks they melted the cheese in with their main course.

I've tried many of these busicuits during my time in the army (their name is the Greek word for biscuit) and from what I can tell the difference between the color and taste are the result of inconsistent baking with each batch, some were underbaked and some were overbaked, the ubderbaked taste sweetish and the overbaked ones taste more savory. Awsome vids!

Hi I was in Greek army , toilet pepper, knife, water, toothbrush and other items for everyday use are in M71 is a small bag and the solder have this bag always with him !
Question: did the rations have better stuff in them before the economic difficulties?
LordBitememan when I was at 2003 we get those rations only when we go for training outside of base for many days , we sleep on tents for days and we eat rations to test them XD , but then there was spoons , some paper towels , a white thing to heat the cans a metal mini stolve , the food inside was like that but there was 3 different food boxes, the only same can with the video is the cheese!
"Toilet *pepper* "
In Greece i think the budget for military stuff was for better quality than this but middle men looked to gain profit over those military expenses . So the ypothetical cost of one ration is 35 euros and the actual cost is 5 . And the 30 is profit for the middle men. Thats one of the causes of the economic difficulties, many middle men put their hands in public money.

Greeting from Greece Steve. Most of the ingredients of the MRE can be found in a supermarket in civilian forms and rather cheeply {that may explain the pictures on the cans}. Greek troops are expected to carry their utensils with them. Although wet wipes are nowhere to be found in Hellenic Army formally, most troops carry pocket sized packages with them. Coffee, tee, sugar, salt, pepper, fresh salad and soft drinks are provided in crates not in MREs. Greek army is directed in defencive combat, so alot of small luxuries are provided through mass supply lines. Nominally I cannot remember a time I ate more Feta cheese than in the Army. And yes this hardtack is at the same time nice but also too thirst provoking. Although, not really modern styled, I heard many stories from sergeants, during NATO training operations, of Greek troops exchanging cans of beef and green beans with troops from other contries after the first days, for virtually anything, because of the "fresher more homecooked taste" of the cans.
Don't really know if it's true, but I have heard the same story too many times to be completely false.
I know only one thing for sure this "gouda cheese" surely sucks. :P
I will second the story of exchanging.
There is a fumy thing with that cheese. Everyone hates it when is doing his service, then everyone long for it after a while!
"Very Spartan...." 10 out of 10 for that reference....

Hey Steve! The peas were supposed to be eaten together with the meat, like mixed together, much better this way.Its another tradional greek recipe.
But having served in the greek army i can tell you that the whole greek army cousine is a bit average and boring, but the ingredients are top quality and balanced.
p.s. :All the stuff this ration contained can be found in any grocery store around greece, they are commercial brands and also pretty average in taste.
kick nanta Did they issue a ration heater/stove to heat the food? Also any coffee or juice or just water from your canteen?

''ΠΑΛΙΡΡΟΙΑ'',in english ''palirria'' (pronounced paleeria) www.palirria.com/?lang=en&path=-615133287
Hello from Greece... To speak about this more like Spartan ration we have to consider that on a war greece will call close to 2.000.000 men to arms... These men will have only one target to defend not do big offensives etc....
So these 2.000.000 have to have food to eat and have it ready when a war broke out... So these rations are produced stored and when are ready to expire army give them to soldiers to eat as lunch many times... Also in a war greeks will be supported by villagers give them sweets, fruits, maybe butchered sheeps, chickens etc...
So its an archaic ration to do the job of a massive conscription army on a war that may last max to a month...

LOKgr what's that last bit in Greek mean?
@@auxnull It means "Come and take them." Refers to when Xerxes told the Spartans to drop their weapons, and King Leonidas told him to come and take them.
Love how sharp that knife always seems.
Happy to finally see some of my country's mre meals here
i will never forget this great cheese from my time in Greek army :P
No Ouzo, I am disappoint.
Ouzo is in the other Menu Box😂
From the label on the box it is Special Forces MRE, I think that regular infantry will have less variety. The biscuits and the caned meals are not specially made for the Army and are commercially available in just about any supermarket in Greece. In the Greek Army every solder is issued a canteen, an aluminum eating can with a folding handle, a fork, a spoon and a 4" pocket knife as well as a roll of toilet paper every month. These items a soldier is expected to have with him at all times when they are away from their base, so there is no need to be included in the MRE pack.
There is no heating element included, because the MRE is supposed to be eaten cold, since heating it will present an increased thermal signature to the enemy. After all MREs are for combat missions, field kitchens will provide hot meals to the troops in the field under non combat conditions. I agree that some instant coffee and some sugar could be included, in the pack, but apparently they were considered non essential.
why do I like these videos so much
DUDE THIS VID BROUGHT ME BACK SO MANY MEMORIES ... I SERVED BACK IN 2012 :p HAD SOME OF THESE DURING SOME EXERCISE OPERATIONS :p

Good job bro! Keep em coming👍
Thanks to you Steve I'm hooked on MREs now I get to try my Lithuanian menu number 5 MRE today. Beware of the frag spoon!
Seeing this reminds me that American MREs need more veggies.
Absolutely. Made me realize that our chow hall meals are very similar to this meal, and our MREs are designed are just to keep you alive in the field. Lol

With full stomach you dont give battles . Thats what we use to say in my unit.

We use to make cold cofee by puting the water where the filters of the air intake is (in the M48-A5) And the konservas in the heat exit of the engine.
Bro love your channel
I've got to hand it to the Greeks. They easily have one of the best MREs on the planet. This looks like real food.
