1955 FPA Food Packet Individual C Ration Vintage MRE Review Meal Ready to Eat Tasting Test

- My first review with a new HD camera and introducing an incredible variety of old U.S. rations up for review. This FPA review is not only an exciting look at an extremely uncommon ration, but also one that has some beautifully preserved components.
The Food Packet Assault is the predecessor to the MCI and LRP (Meal, Combat, Individual) (Food Packet, Long Range Patrol) and was essentially a K Ration of the 1950's. A fascinating and transitional ration, a rare treat - true military food art.
PS - I didn't realize until long after the shoot that those water purification tablets were missing from the ration. Noting it here and hoping someone can pass that along to anyone wondering about this in the comments.

The pleasure Steve gets from huffing the 66 year old air from an accessory packet is truly inspiring

Steve eats 70 year old MREs like he's dining at a Michelin Star restaurant.
From 1955 - very special 😉👌
Finally, some good fuckin' food!
And that 1955 vintage ration is still better then 2018 vintage Chinese rations. The Chinese give you pre rotted pork for your very own intestinal adventure. ( being captured on the latrine however is additional fun)
how don’t he get super ill? how tf does he even eat it
@@THISISLolesh Steve said the pre rotten ration was something that a soldier in the field might not have any other option but to eat. While you got 2 in the pack only having one ration for 24 hours in full combat will be a major drain on a soldier. Your choice might be to have to try to take an enemy supply dump in the hopes that it’s full of edible food when your units are only getting one meal they can eat for 24 hours. Or end up unable to advance cause your soldiers are hungry and the last food they had was 20 plus hours ago. Rotten food or no food are both pretty demoralizing. And trying to subsist by eating local vegetation is something only the North Koreans can manage
I served in the Army from 1971 to 1998. After opening one of these cases, my drill sergeant tossed me a P-38 opener and screamed "You lose this, you starve!!" I wore that P-38 on my dog tag chain throughout my 27 year career, even when we transitioned to MREs.
I used to carry one on my key chain, until it got loose enough it would open up and the blade flip out in my pocket. Got a nice little scar on my thigh from that wee dagger🤣.
@@ClarenceCochran-ne7du shoulda used a magnet that's why I did extra step but will save you the pain

Nothing compares to Flavor Country.
Every blast gets you 20 stories
I served on forest fire crews in the early 80s, and there were times when we would have these airdropped to us until we could get to Basecamp some days later. A lot of the rations had dates from the 50s and 60s, but as long as it smells OK and the can was not bulged, we ate it.
And the free cigarettes
I was in Boy Scouts in the late 1970s and we were given rations from earlier times that had been donated. I remember being on a canoe trip in western Pennsylvania and trying to eat dehydrated food. We would mix the dried peanut butter and dried chocolate pudding and water to make this Reese Cup kind of sludge.
Can't imagine doing the same, today!
Wow. What was in that stuff that u could eat it 20 to 30 yrs later and still live?
@@lh6784Nothing compared to the crap they put in food nowadays! Well packed and stored in a cool, dry place my guess is! :)

When I was in the Army in Germany in the early 70's we had C-Rats from the 60's. Still have my P38 on my key ring. And the Sherbit candies, used to buy them for a nickel a roll in the 60's and that damn pull string to open the pack didn't work when they were new either.
I was gifted a p38. I can open a can with it faster than an electric opener. My only real skill.
Vietnam Era vet here. The rations never contained enough of the stuff you really want to eat! So.. I remember the chocolate disks in the C Ration cans, and I still remember just how good the fruitcake was. Rich, buttery, no weird candied fruit. I loved it and used to trade for it.
The absolute pure *JOY* this man felt from simply smoking a nearly 70 year old cigarette is just beautiful.
A 'trip' back in time.
From everything that I've heard the cigarettes in the old rations are far better than modern cigarettes.
@@noahpaulette1490 Yeah, around the 70s/80s is when cigarette companies started putting all the REAL cancerous shit in cigarettes, like formaldehyde, various acids, etc. in an effort to increase its addictiveness. Of course, tobacco is never actually safe to inhale, and as recently as the 1930s a lot of smokers didn't actually inhale the smoke, treating it basically the same way as a cigar. Inhaling the smoke only became widespread when manufacturers started cutting the nicotine content in an effort cut costs, replacing much of the tobacco with filler.
Well, never underestimate what 66 years of...uhh...."production cost optimisation" did to todays products. back then most sweets were still actually sweets, nowadays they really should call them chems instead. I wager the changes for cigarettes are similar.
So I am not surprised that he is so enthusiastic to taste stuff from the 60s and older.
@@matrix3509 even beyond all the flavour additives, there’s also crap like collecting the dust from the floor and making it into a new sheet with some kinda binder crap and adding that in with the actual leaves. Not to mention including the stems too! Just the worst parts of the plant, which for a long time they rightfully discarded when they were competing on taste and experience. But as you say, they realised they had huge brand loyalty and just focused on being more addictive to increase the rate of purchases. Of course there were always people who smoked a pack a day, but back then far more people smoked one a day or even less, maybe even one a week, and weren’t actually chemically dependent.

My grandfather used to talk about these rations during the Korean war, its cool to see the same stuff he saw and ate while in service, thanks for recording so much history and saving so many cool things.
Howdy folks, after a little extra time learning how to use some various new equipment and some technical issues resolved, this video is finally ready and the upgrades have come to fruition.
Now instead of using two cameras, things are simplified back to one like in 2016-17.
This alone is going to make production significantly less complicated. I'm happy with the quality, and I hope you will be to.
This Food Packet Assault was a real gem - something that I've not reviewed in over 5 years now. For every fifty K Rations out there, you'll maybe find one of these. Speaking of K Rations, this is very much like a K Ration of the 1950's. The beginning part of this video shows some various ration correlations and I encourage anyone interested in this to not skip around on that initial part of the video. Hope you enjoy! Does anyone else find it sad to see all these products that were once made in small towns across America and distributed all over the world, knowing that many of these factories shut down and these places have since fallen off the map?
I feel the same way man.
Yes, exactly. As the West Coast and East Coast continue to thrive along with Texas and Chicago, much of the U.S. hinterlands have declined.
We should have never sold out our workers all those years ago just because it saves a buck.
Or that many of the folks who used to work in those factories are no longer with us either.
Can’t help but think that soldiers back in the day would have taken some comfort in knowing that what they were going to eat comes from small towns in their own country. It would make me feel better if I was stuck in a hole on the other side of the world.
The attitude Steve brings to his videos is what this world needs a strong dose of

It's amazing how well preserved the wrapper was for the candy and the cigarettes. Literally plucked out of time. Also amazing how those crackers and the cookie were perfectly preserved.
1955! What a great piece of HISStory! Thanks for getting it out on a tray for us!
Indeed! I've been doing a lot of research on British naval combat in the early 19th century and it amazes me how they survived on what they had to eat. Simply having weevils in their tack was common and the ships millers(rats) were eaten as quick as they could catch them. They would have a noose around a hole in the hull and place cheese outside the hole. They'd strangle the millers as they poked their head out. And when no more millers would come out, they'd eat the cheese. I guess a belly full of grog helped keep all the bacteria they consumed at bay.

Ladies, find a man that's as into you as Steve is into these old cigs.
When old tobacco has an ammonia smell, lay the smokes down for a few months in a SEMI-humidified environment for a few months, ie: about half the humidity of a standard cigar humidor. Depending on the quality of the tobacco, they will eventually lose the ammonia smell and emerge smoother and sweeter than they were originally.
Wow that's amazing info, thank you so much for passing it along man.
I'vve been looking for Three Castles Tobacco, both the original UK tin and the US remake (my favorite tobacco). Anyone know where to find old out of mfg tobacco?
@@mkpalmer99
Ahhh yes! That beautiful old green tin. Delicious stuff.
I haven’t smoked anything but for a few cigars in the past 7 years or so. In the early 80’s through to the early 2000’s I was big into pipes, cigars and fine cigarettes. Vintage tins of tobacco are becoming very hard to come across these day and the prices are very high if you’re lucky enough to find them. I remember in the late 90’s you could pretty easily still find old timey tobacconist shops which were at the time, well well past their heyday and struggling. Often you could find sealed 15-25 year old tins of legendary, fine blends, covered in dust, that were never marked up in price from the day they arrived at the shop. Sadly that is no longer the case. Every “smoke shop” these days has been gutted and filled with bongs, hookahs, vapes and a lottery counter.
Even the few old brands of some of my favorites that still exist, in name only, have been totally corrupted…Crap!
Three Castles, as you know, was a fine cut, 100% bright Virginia cigarette tobacco. I can’t think of an equivalent off the top of my head. You may be able to find something similar at Smokingpipes dot com in the tobacco section.
Damn we got a tobacco expert here
@@mercoid Thanks for the input. I just saw some comments that Three Sails is made by the guy who blended Three Castles. Also someone mentioned the Canadian Export "A" brand as a good substitute. Appreciate the help!
Love your dedication, and love that you take safety precautions.
And yet another episode of Steve eating decades old food. Great job! Inspires me to find some of my own!
Am I a 23 year old female that primary watches makeup videos? Yes. Do I have any idea why this video would be suggested to me to watch? No. Did I watch it anyway and now want to binge watch all this channel’s previous videos? Yes. 😂
Nice!
Welcome to the foxhole! We have Coffee, Instant, and rancid cookies!
@@FeedMeMister and rust. Or is it chocolate?
Welcome to the club I made the mistake of watching Steve when he was RUclips recommended and now I'm like a junky waiting for his next release.
Or waiting to see if Steve is well and good after eating this stuff lol
I don’t even smoke and somehow I live for watching Steve smoke an old cigarette and drink some old coffee
Sounds bad, but he makes a 70 year old cigarette look Delicious
I had to light one up when he described that cigarette.
@@zachstuefen6282 His comment on cigarette is much more convincing than rations and I don't know why, I don't even smoke! LOL
While listening to Otis Redding "Cigarettes and Coffee" lol
@@zachstuefen6282 same here 😂
Why is watching this man eating crackers in his bedroom so entertaining?
I sometimes play these in the background if I'm having trouble sleeping. Hasn't failed me yet, your voice is so soft and calming its the perfect white noise for me. I ofc use the ones I've already seen otherwise I'd keep checking my phone to see what he's opening lol thank you Steve
Watching this grown man open these MRE boxes like he's a 5-year-old on Christmas morning is just so heartwarming to me. I'll never get tired of watching his videos. Keep up the amazing work, Steve!
Hey there
Thee way Steve critique that chocolate chip cookie and cigarette was pure gold. Needs to be a guest judge on Gordon Ramsay's MasterChef after this performance.
I'm not sure Steve could handle that, all that fresh food might get to him!
Steve if you're interested in saving that protein for display try sealing it in clear epoxy.
Would make a really nice piece. Alright cool, see ya.
I always love the intros/outros with the music and still shots. Great stuff Steve
Cookie: *looks decrepit*
Steve: "There's like... nothing wrong with it."
It looks fucked lol
A lot of freshly made cookies can look like that, and they are really tasty and good. It doesn't look decrepit or fucked, you two are just spoiled brats.
@@kurvos Whoever's baking fresh cookies that look like that needs to try harder
@@kurvos Yes, it looks like a pretty standard factory-made, crumbly cookie.
@@kurvos Haha fuck off
Me: *worries about some food going stale in my fridge*
Steve: *eats a chocolate chip cookie from the late 50s*
nice
@@Steve1989MRE you're nice.
If this helps, stale food is never dangerous just for being stale. In fact, when it’s dried out like that, it basically can’t grow mould or other such things. That’s part of why things that are already dry like breakfast cereal say “best before” instead of “use by”, as they just become below-par with age instead of genuinely dangerous.
@@kaitlyn__L So basically they taste like shit but won't kill you? (This is a legit question)
@@walkingglasses6264 most stale food actually tastes the same, usually it’s just a textural degradation. But basically: yes
Edit: like, if it tastes off, that’s a sign that smth maybe has grown in the food and you shouldn’t eat it. But taking a small test bite is like 99% safe. If it tastes musty or bitter or sour (etc) when it’s not meant to, then don’t eat any more.
His love for history and all its nuances really shows in his videos. Much respect ✊
God I’m glad these videos are back in my feed, easily the most relaxing content on YT.
I’m so baked when he showed the cookie to the camera, I started reaching for it
Yeah, I tried to smell it.
"A friendly little food fossil."
Truly the Bob Ross of MRE RUclips.
That part made me literally giggle out loud
Outstanding amount of great information Steve, thank you! :)
You’re such a positive person, and I know it contributes to your popularity. Even amongst deterioration, grim and spoilage, you’re happy as a clam. Picks up rusted can: That’s not bad. Lol I’m here for you all day man. I’ve been a subscriber since the early days
