2020 Canadian IMP Pulled Pork Individual Meal Pack Review MRE Tasting Test

- The newest Canadian IMP is lighter in weight, yet packs in just as many calories as ever. This Pulled Pork, menu #12 is absolutely fantastic. With 39 grams of protein to the main course, it's very sustaining and truly delectable in it's quality. Gotta say, this is a menu worth looking for!
Currently editing an exciting review of a never before filmed US survival ration from 1957. So stay tuned for that. Had to eat a little something normal for in between, so for the folks out there who like their food a bit fresher, this one's for you. Alright cool, see ya.

As a Canadian Military member I can probably say without a doubt the FRH’s are issued separately for cost reduction on the rations themselves. We don’t use the FRHs very often especially in training situations. We use a Coleman stove with a pressure cooker, your able to heat your entire sections meals or at least a group of peoples rations all at once. That is at least why I believe we still issue them separately.
lol maybe in basic. everywhere else you're using a FRH.
Not gonna lie, I’m not military, but I ran into a military guy emptying his bag looking for something in a gym changing room, and one of the things he pulled out was a mini stove and pot. I’m pretty sure our Soldiers are more than ready for making MREs without FRHs…
@@ianbuitenga3133 ohh yeah, tell that to the boys pounding down these cold poutines. Cold poutine and then chew on a pack of that Nescafé you’re golden
@@ianbuitenga3133 11 years in and I’d say at least 75% of the time the general directive is to use the stoves maybe if your combat arms it’s different but as a veh tech we generally just have the heaters in our trucks in case we’re out doing repairs around meal times and we’re gonna be awhile.
Stonks
CANFOR guy here:
The reason we generally don't have or let us be real don't use the FRHs is we have a Colman stove with either a pressure cooker or pot of water when we have these. And if you're on patrol in the cold? You shove them in your jacket and they get warm on their own.
Thought it would be something like that, or like the UK forces you are never too far away from a vehicle with a BV for you hot water.
That's pretty cool. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Steve, a friend of mine from the Canadian military said to “allow the Reese’s sticks to melt, then Crush them up, squeeze the crunchy mushy contents into the tortilla, then fold... then cook it like a mountain pie over the fire using spare aluminum foil or the pan from your mess kit. Your left with a homemade chocolate peanuts butter MRE crumble cake” he states it’s heaven after a long heavy ruck!

You can also spread the peanut butter pack onto the tortilla and mix with Reeces pieces or smarties
Another good one is mixing the vanilla drink mix, pain hamburger (torn into chunks) and the apple slices desert. If your lucky enough too have a heat source warm it up and you've got apple bread puddin for when your cold and sad in the dirt ;)
Wow! I have worked for the CDN combat ration program for 15 years and JUST came across these review videos. We are so happy to hear that you love the pulled pork, its a fave of mine too! This made my day!

I feel like Canada secretly watches Steve and modifies their MRE's based on his findings, because they really seem to crank out top tier rations on the regular.

actually when the same rations return time and again or get left behind at kit out ... they revise them to fix them ... they havent figured out how to make powdered eggs taste good that is why you get tobasco in the night meal ... its for breakfast and the eggs to mask the shit flavour

Im in the Canadian military and this is probably one of my favorite imp. Youre right about having the heater bags, they should of incorporate them with the imps but im guessing its a contract issue with two different companies. Sometimes you get issued old dryed out bags that dont heat up properly so youre stuck with eating your imp cold. I always eats my pb&j first while waiting for my main meal to warm up.
The dates square is a gamble because they usually gives you the shits so depending where you are it can sucks lol. Most of our IMPs are very very good now, I've tried quite a bit from different countries and they are hard to beat.
I like alot if the American ones and its cool that they have skittles and cheese wheezes sometimes. Norway were really good to, you get a 24 hours package and you eat whatever whenever.
Cheers
The reason we have the IMP separate from the heating bag is for winter when we heat the meals in the pressure cooker in the 10 man tents. We would waste the heating bags
@@sharmoutha never thought of that you're right, I probably ate half my ration out of a pressure cooker which is almost quicker than a heater bag anyways and not chance of a dud which Ive seem to get alot the past two exercise ive been on.
I just remember we traded a whole pallet of cdn imps for a pallet of american MREs once and thought having everything together was kinda handy. Definitely like that they had skittles and cheese wheeze spreads sometimes but not all their meals had coffee in them. 🤓
@@fogpatrol its the same reason we have a tac vest and a frag vest. Because in the Arctic you put the frag underneath everything and the tacvest over your parka.
Was just in Canada for military training and they were super eager to trade their cases of IMP’s for our cases of MRE’s. Pizza pasta was my favorite so far, but I didn’t get to try much of the others outside of that one case as they gave us a bunch of the same case. Overall was super impressed and it made the training experience a bit better knowing I didn’t have to deal with the same old MRE’s we are used to. Side note, just about every Canadian we met was extremely welcoming and sociable; definitely enjoyed meeting some of our friends in the north!

@@TheInsomniaddict ....some companies have made replica outer cardboard/paper packaging. Actually putting food into cans requires an extensive financial investment liability wise. The closest you can come are Spam1/2 size cans (tear the label off )and Underwood small round cans of chicken, ham or beef spread. Both type of cans have pull tabs but can be opened with a p38 opener. The crackers are still made by Nabisco but are packaged in plastic wrap, not cellophane. Instant coffee is available in packets. Lemon or orange drink is available in packets. Similar candies and gum are still made, packaging differs 'though. TP and matches can be easily self replicated.

Just kidding;). We have separate ration with things like jerky, candy and raisins so you don't have to cook while on a dismounted patrol.
Noticed how weird it was that it was called “Reese Sticks” and not “Reese’s Sticks” and went searching. Turns out Hershey’s ditched the name ReeseSticks for the more conventional Reese’s naming convention of “Reese’s Sticks” in 2009, since most people pronounced it that way anyways. Wonder if that means the one in the MRE is 12+ years old or if it just uses left over old stock packaging.
Nice digging that’s interesting
Based on my digging I believe that in Canada they are still named “Reese Sticks” I can order Reese Sticks from Canada that still are dubbed Reese as opposed to Reese’s. Must just be a Candy thing since ofc it’s a Canadian ration!

The Canadian forces issue rating cards to the troops with the rations so they can provide feedback. They actively incorporate feedback from soldiers when designing new ones so overall they REALLY put in the effort to make the IMPS good. I think for this reason I would rather be issued IMPs than MREs from the US. Some of my friends deliberately give bad ratings on good ration packs so the MOD doesn't get too complacent and keeps innovating them.
That seems like you'd run the risk of them innovating something you like into something you don't like.
@@darkjemdudeTrue, never give the higher-ups room for interpretation. Either everything is good enough or it needs to be completely replaced in their minds.
Luckily IMPs are handled by people pretty eager to innovate, they treat it almost like a science. As long as they meet NATO, CAF and Health Canada standards I don't think any of the brass really care or have any involvement. Bureaucracy can sometimes be a benefit if it allows passionate people to find a niche department to work their magic in.

Thanks, Steve.
Same
You're welcome man glad this could help. nice
I Agree
Steve you are a hero in my book and I thanks you for you and family have done for all of us
omg. this takes me back. I was never in the Canadian army, but I did do Air cadets throughout my youth. we went on 5 weekend survival training exercises (deep bush, 3 summer, 2 winter) and these were always what we had to eat for meals. everyone got their own pack, but they took out all the main meals, and cooked them together in a big stock pot (Still in the packaging, obviously). so many good memories :D
The really old rations have a historical interest, but I really prefer your videos with the fresher modern rations that actually make good eating.
Same, but I do enjoy watching him smoke those old darts lol
There's definitely enough carbs in this ration, but not definitely not enough Steve in our youtube feeds.
Also: this man has eaten newer rations than actual Canadian troops, who are still stuck on 17/18s.
He gets variety while our boys in the field get lung-in-a-bag days in a row.

I just got to say I need more Steve. More Steve is the only prescription.
Hey its my opposite!
@@rabbitttz I want to see a Mortal Kombat fight between you and the OP for some reason.
Great review as always. Glad to see you. Looking forward to more:)
Man, I remember watching this channel when you were getting 20k views per video. I just got a recommendation to watch this and wow! Congratulations buddy.
One of my good friends is in critical condition in the hospital right now, this really calmed me down, you’re the best steve
Hope your buddy makes a speedy recovery lad

maby anyone could be good at being a human, do you know him personally?

your channel has opened my eyes to seeing that passion in anything can lead to success. I'm sure you have your own life and job outside of MRE's but just making videos of combat food has brought you huge success and enjoyment and I hope you can continue these videos as I love them just as much as you love making them.
I love these videos. Steve is a man of passion.
Man, I'm glad I'm about to eat dinner! This one looks like a good one. I like what you did with the reeces sticks, pb&j combo👍
I wish my bag of Cheeto’s had a gusset like those MRE…
you can fold the bottom in and make one, but its a bit tricky
just pull the bottom inside a little, easly little gusset
Fold the bottom of the bag in like the others said and use chopsticks to eat them like out of a bowl. Clean fingers and a bowl of Cheetos
Put it into a bowl smaller servings with serve your waist ! JK jalapeño cheddar Cheetos would make me commit haram
My cousin works marketing for Cheetos . I’ll bring it up at our next family get together . You are on to something .
"A classic Canadian double-double, which is 2 creamers and... half the date cake"
I think Steve almost but not quite understands Canadian coffee lingo.
Great video as usual! Very honest & well reviewed. Thanks.
I always end up watching his videos when I’m hungry and the rations always look sooooo good…
I love how Steve said "Canadian leaf, makes it official"
Steve: "look at the nice gusset on this beverage bag."
Viewers: "You can't just do that. It's too lewd."
i never get over the the off the wall stuff i just love to watch on youtube. great videos!
We miss you Steve. I have another 12 videos loaded up to watch over the next day. The world needs your light to shine upon it, it just for a little while.
