Noticed how weird it was that it was called “Reese Sticks” and not “Reese’s Sticks” and went searching. Turns out Hershey’s ditched the name ReeseSticks for the more conventional Reese’s naming convention of “Reese’s Sticks” in 2009, since most people pronounced it that way anyways. Wonder if that means the one in the MRE is 12+ years old or if it just uses left over old stock packaging.
Based on my digging I believe that in Canada they are still named “Reese Sticks” I can order Reese Sticks from Canada that still are dubbed Reese as opposed to Reese’s. Must just be a Candy thing since ofc it’s a Canadian ration!
While I enjoy the old MREs, the new ones are always exciting. Being able to see the evolution of these things and what all the different countries are doing is very entertaining!

I'm sure you have your own life and job outside of MRE's but just making videos of combat food has brought you huge success and enjoyment and I hope you can continue these videos as I love them just as much as you love making them.
A big part of the reason the FRH isn't included is really just cost. A lot of CAF exercises these days have plenty of opportunity to just boil a bunch together so it makes sense to only give FRHs to units that actually need them. Less waste too.
@@lawrencedavid9728 fun fact, can't say much about the LAVs, but the old cougars had an air filter for smoke, gas, etc. On training ex's they wouldn't put the filters in to stop them wearing out, but the filterless air box still kept cool from the air flow and was the perfect size to fit a case of beer
Minor point of correction: a "double double" refers to double the standard amount of cream and *sugar*, not the strength of the coffee itself. In case any international viewers come here and get a too sweet surprise, that's what it means.

Hi Steve, I wanted to clarify what a Canadian Double-Double is. Its a coffee with 2 cream and 2 sugar (Hence double-double). I believe the term originated from our Tim Hortons donut shop chain. =D The more you know!
I was in in the 70s and 80's at the time we transitioned from canned to magic pantry. The tinned bacon was sorely missed, but the weight reduction was substantial. The best thing in the new kits was the chocolate pudding; add water to the powder in the zip lock bag (looked exactly the same as the one in the vid) and shake. It was awesome! It must have been carcinogenic or something, because they went away
When I was a kid my dad had a duffel full of accessory packs and FRHs that we made little bombs with. I thought that would be why they don't have them, but maybe they expect troops to cook and eat in groups.
We never had FRHs to make bombs with, but we *did* throw packets of creamer from IMPs into the campfire... because they'd explode quite satisfyingly. We were of course reprimanded for doing so. And continued doing it anyway.
You guys are allowed to eat on a patrol!? Just kidding;). We have separate ration with things like jerky, candy and raisins so you don't have to cook while on a dismounted patrol.

omg. this takes me back. I was never in the Canadian army, but I did do Air cadets throughout my youth. we went on 5 weekend survival training exercises (deep bush, 3 summer, 2 winter) and these were always what we had to eat for meals. everyone got their own pack, but they took out all the main meals, and cooked them together in a big stock pot (Still in the packaging, obviously). so many good memories :D
I stayed at Trenton AFB last year during the beginning of covid. We stayed in a civilian hotel on the base and were being served meals 3 times a day as well as having some goods come in. We were provided with really awful maxwell house packets and it was the worst... however, a couple of boxes of nescafe 3 in 1 made it and we were more than happy
There's definitely enough carbs in this ration, but not definitely not enough Steve in our youtube feeds. Also: this man has eaten newer rations than actual Canadian troops, who are still stuck on 17/18s.
The Canadian forces issue rating cards to the troops with the rations so they can provide feedback. They actively incorporate feedback from soldiers when designing new ones so overall they REALLY put in the effort to make the IMPS good. I think for this reason I would rather be issued IMPs than MREs from the US. Some of my friends deliberately give bad ratings on good ration packs so the MOD doesn't get too complacent and keeps innovating them.
@@darkjemdudeTrue, never give the higher-ups room for interpretation. Either everything is good enough or it needs to be completely replaced in their minds. Luckily IMPs are handled by people pretty eager to innovate, they treat it almost like a science. As long as they meet NATO, CAF and Health Canada standards I don't think any of the brass really care or have any involvement. Bureaucracy can sometimes be a benefit if it allows passionate people to find a niche department to work their magic in.
I had Canadian rations when I was in Air Cadets back in the early 2010’s and I gotta say that the rectangular bread they had is, to this day, the best processed bread I’ve ever had. It’s too bad they moved away from it.
Hey Steve, as a former Canadian Air cadet (107 spitfire anyone?) and lover of pulled pork this was an exciting one. I understand not including an FRH, they would heat them all in a large pot for our whole squadron. I don't recall particular loving any of the mains, my favorite was to toast the little loaf of bread over fire and eat with jam. I fondly remember trading the sports drink packets, with certain flavors such as watermelon and pineapple being highly coveted. Also the cardboard was nice to hold the meal when it's fresh out the boiler.

Pizza pasta was my favorite so far, but I didn’t get to try much of the others outside of that one case as they gave us a bunch of the same case. Overall was super impressed and it made the training experience a bit better knowing I didn’t have to deal with the same old MRE’s we are used to. Side note, just about every Canadian we met was extremely welcoming and sociable; definitely enjoyed meeting some of our friends in the north!

Nice digging that’s interesting
Based on my digging I believe that in Canada they are still named “Reese Sticks” I can order Reese Sticks from Canada that still are dubbed Reese as opposed to Reese’s. Must just be a Candy thing since ofc it’s a Canadian ration!

A big part of the reason the FRH isn't included is really just cost. A lot of CAF exercises these days have plenty of opportunity to just boil a bunch together so it makes sense to only give FRHs to units that actually need them. Less waste too.
LAVs must have a boiler built in i would assume.
In general, you also arent far from an ICE.

McDonald's does double double as well. Probably an overlap of customers between the two chains.

When I was in Cadets, we ate these IMP’s training off base. They never issued the FRH’s. We boiled them in a big pot.
When I was a kid my dad had a duffel full of accessory packs and FRHs that we made little bombs with. I thought that would be why they don't have them, but maybe they expect troops to cook and eat in groups.
WE DID THE SAME THING. Oh man the memories of wishing for that Maple Pork Pattie.
We never had FRHs to make bombs with, but we *did* throw packets of creamer from IMPs into the campfire... because they'd explode quite satisfyingly. We were of course reprimanded for doing so. And continued doing it anyway.

Hey Jakob! It's great to be back, thanks man.
I really enjoy Steve's videos. He does a great job of reviewing the food. Really seems like a good dude.
That seems like you'd run the risk of them innovating something you like into something you don't like.
I can only imagine how Steve would be as a food demonstrator at Costco....
