It sounds like SCHO-KA-KOLA which is caffeinated chocolate with kola nut. It comes in a round tin can and used to be pretty popular in Germany when I was a kid. I wasn't allowed to eat it because of the caffeine, though.
You can still buy the chocolate. It's called Scho - Ka - Kola and comes in a round tin. Red for dark chocolate, blue for milk chocolate. Look it up, they've got an internet page. Greetings from Germany

Thats why its so overbuilt compared to modern mres that are usually consumed shortly after being issued. I really like its design, very slick and hard packaging so that it can be jammed down in your pack without much care.
Even at this date, that mre can save someone’s life in emergency situation. I am guessing dried meat and canned food can last forever if packaging holds. Really fascinating…
By FAR my favorite ration you've ever shown, I just can't believe how modern the ration looks, I asked my wife when she thought it came out and she placed it around 2000's Its just so freaking cool, and I'm starting to really understand your sense of humor now! A unique and gifted man is our Steve! I really mean that.
Since you liked that chocolate, try to get your hands on some "Scho-Ka-Kola" :) That bar was probably made by "Hildebrand, Kakao- und Schokoladenfabrik GmbH" who might even be the inventors of Cola-Chocolate, in 1935 they started selling is under the name "Scho-Ka-Kola", in WW2 it was a part of every pilot's ration which earned it the nickname Fliegerschokolade, while various other rations also contained it in some form or another. Since then the company has been closed down, and the rights and recipes changed hands multiple times, but they still pride them self in keeping the recipe as close as possible with modern regulations. No, I'm not a history fan or anything, but that stuff pretty much kept me alert at a job where you weren't allowed to carry any liquids outside the break rooms, so I got curious what my favorite chocolate actually is.
@@JunkCCCP There's a reason we call them grammar Nazis: Hitlerites introduced modern drug control regimes and were the first industrial economy to ban recreational meth. ):

How a full grown straight man can watch another man eat old stuff and enjoy the show just baffles the hell out of me but it just does?!? World's most interesting man? If not Steve is in the running for that spot! No joke...
You always talk about saving things for your display. When are you going to show us your display? I bet it's pretty freaking cool! We're loving your videos here in Plant City Florida Steve! Keep them coming my friend.
Respect for translating everything which you did great (being German helps reading it and you translated everything very accurate, thinking of the Part where you have to translate every single language for every Ration I am more than impressed)
Antal Gergő , ha ha, Ukranian?! I'm not surprised ) If we take into account level of corruption and abuse in all kinds of their departments and institutes, it's not a surprise that spoiled or low quality products got into ration, 'somehow'. Poor ukranian soldiers...
Apparently there are still a few places that make Chocolate Cola Bars but only the people that have eaten these rations would ever be able to compare the taste. I'd love to see you do something like that Steve. Were you try to find modern or current day equivalents in taste to some of the more delicious things you've enjoyed in these aged rations. Maybe a video of you eating the modern version and commenting on how you feel its similar or different to a ration item.
Scho-Ka-Kola is still sold commercially, and has been since 1936. I still remember surviving on that and the MRE peanut butter they gave us in the FDF. I assume this is the same stuff in the video since it's been in German military use for ages, but that the form is different for the survival ration (normally they come in round 'disks', and are separated into wedges). The caffeinated chocolate is really addictive. Not sure you can get them in North America, but worst case scenario you can just ship them over.
Correct, the Finnish Defense Forces. Note that I have never stumbled upon the product included in Finnish MREs, but it was an extremely popular product to carry with you since it's sold commercially in Finland. I just looked it up and you can get the product from Amazon US, but the tins are about three times as expensive as in Europe (original price ~3€). I suppose if you're desperate for a taste it might be worth it.
Imagine in a firefight with the invading Soviets, reaching for a magazine and pulling out a meat bar. You'd be embarrassed. Or imagine reaching for your combat ration and pulling out a load of bullets.
Steve, your delivery of these videos is amazing. It seems to me that there is a bit of intended very dry and subtle humor, which makes it even better. "You know the German military, they would make a survival situation actually seem pretty - nice!" *flash to MRE ingredients laid out on the tray*. Well done sir!
"This is some of the best chocolate I've had in my life." ...People overlook German chocolate's quality! Germany makes excellent chocolates. In general, I actually prefer German to Swiss chocolates.
In my opinion German Chocolate is very very good! Isn't that hard find better German chocolat than swiss ones, like 50/50, however Swiss Chocolate is the best if we talking about the high-end chocolates. If you go to a traditional Swiss maker chocolate blows your mind. Expensive but the better you can have. I live in Switzerland :)
You are an absolute legend. I love your videos! It amazes me at the quality difference in packaging and content between the US rations of this period and the German ones. This one in particular seems incredibly advanced
i don't know the square metal box does seem quite likely to split, they added those little L shaped spacer he called them to stop it getting crushed if sat on but sharp corners easily split. I imagine an east german ration from this time would be a very very differnt story though... probably a chicken thigh wrapped in a handkerchief :p
I've been wondering. How long does it take for time to catch up with the MRE's once opened? Your videos are great dude. You talking about 56 year old survival rations like its vintage wine is priceless. It's always great to watch someone that's passionate about what they do.✌️

"These caramels are kind of addictive" thats the Meth the Germans were still using, Steve lol they just made caramels with it
How u found out? O.O
You can still buy these exact caramel bars.
The only difference is the age and print.
But they are still addictive as all hell
Haha they consumed alot of amphetamines the ww2. That's what's kept them going.
@@woiowoiow190 Imagine those soldier coming back from the war with severe PTSD and amphetamines withdrawal.

Since you liked that chocolate, try to get your hands on some "Scho-Ka-Kola" :)
That bar was probably made by "Hildebrand, Kakao- und Schokoladenfabrik GmbH" who might even be the inventors of Cola-Chocolate, in 1935 they started selling is under the name "Scho-Ka-Kola", in WW2 it was a part of every pilot's ration which earned it the nickname Fliegerschokolade, while various other rations also contained it in some form or another.
The bar was made by Sarotti though (you can see it at 2:07). But it might have been inspired by Schokakola.
Oh man, If you only knew, WHY it was keeping you standing :)
Cola chocolate sounds yummy!
@@tonybloodloss unless he's a 90 year old furry and was eating this stuff in the mid 40s it didn't have any uppers in it, just caffeine.
@@JunkCCCP There's a reason we call them grammar Nazis: Hitlerites introduced modern drug control regimes and were the first industrial economy to ban recreational meth. ):
"I don't know if I'm going to eat that." Eats its. *Oh, Steve!*
"I think it's still edible!"
coolevi123 its called caring about your health and well being.
This ration is so cool. It reminds me of the old school sci-fi style with it's metallic silver look and food bars.
*chuckles* "what an experience" Steves enthusiasm is both genuine and awesome.
is losing the war
*eats cola bar*
turns the tide of war
Meth Bar
Hey krillin we're losing
Toss me a SENZU BEAN
Krillin.....senzu bean!! 😂😂😂
Coca cola wasn't in Germany
Who knew watching a person unbox, and taste test mres could be sooo interesting.
jzgsk Yeah, that's basically everyone's reaction when they come across Steve's videos. Then after watching them for 20 videos straight you just accept that these videos are pretty good.
It’s midnight and I’m watching a guy enjoying a 56 year old compressed meat bar... thank you internet.
German enginuity🤫
How a full grown straight man can watch another man eat old stuff and enjoy the show just baffles the hell out of me but it just does?!? World's most interesting man? If not Steve is in the running for that spot! No joke...
Ge0 Arc well.. world is a strangle place ..learn to enjoy it
+ayooo Strangle place? That's depressing.
Ge0 Arc I was thinking the same thing. Why do I enjoy watching this? Lol
Ge0 Arc I feel you bro lol I don't get it either
Same here... something strange is going on with these vids
You're a legend for eating that meat bar.
Ad am it's the oldest meat he's eaten! Lol
UltraVioletReeper you shure? he has eaten a lot of rations way older than this.
manuel grohse I mean, he does say "its the oldest meat I've ever eaten"
You always talk about saving things for your display. When are you going to show us your display? I bet it's pretty freaking cool! We're loving your videos here in Plant City Florida Steve! Keep them coming my friend.
B Caldwell yeah I'd also like to see this. been watching his videos for a long time. I enjoy the variety of all the MREs.
damn plant city i was raised there.
SplinterCel3000 Nice! I have been here all my life. Where you at now?
B Caldwell Washington

Respect for translating everything which you did great (being German helps reading it and you translated everything very accurate, thinking of the Part where you have to translate every single language for every Ration I am more than impressed)
I love this guy, idk no why but these videos are some of the coolest videos ive ever seen,,,, steve do you ever get sick from any of the foods???
He did have food poisoning i think. The most serious case was with a Ukranian ration. He was in the hospital for some time i believe, too.
Antal Gergő , ha ha, Ukranian?! I'm not surprised )
If we take into account level of corruption and abuse in all kinds of their departments and institutes, it's not a surprise that spoiled or low quality products got into ration, 'somehow'.
Urek Mazino aged fig bars are one of the best things
Scho-Ka-Kola is still sold commercially, and has been since 1936. I still remember surviving on that and the MRE peanut butter they gave us in the FDF. I assume this is the same stuff in the video since it's been in German military use for ages, but that the form is different for the survival ration (normally they come in round 'disks', and are separated into wedges).
The caffeinated chocolate is really addictive. Not sure you can get them in North America, but worst case scenario you can just ship them over.
Tripticket you should message steve with what you know, so he can get more!
I can get Scho-Ka-Kola in Montréal, QC in Canada. It's one of my favourite chocolates.
"Don't know if i will actually try this One..." *nomnom*
"i don't know if I'm gonna try it" 3 seconds later takes a huge bite
I'm willing to bet that ration is very close in size to a G3 magazine. So you could use the same mag pouch to hold them.
Imagine in a firefight with the invading Soviets, reaching for a magazine and pulling out a meat bar. You'd be embarrassed. Or imagine reaching for your combat ration and pulling out a load of bullets.
Ashley Pomeroy one of those seems worse than the other ;)
you could bribe them with this excellent chocolate to not shoot you..
Mat S
I mean, in certain situations, you kinda have a point..
+Ashley Pomeroy: See George Bernard Shaw's play "Arms and the Man."
He's the Bob Ross of these kinds of channels.

princess toni so is this video like asmr for you?
This man genuinely enjoys what hes doing make me smile

Steve, your delivery of these videos is amazing. It seems to me that there is a bit of intended very dry and subtle humor, which makes it even better. "You know the German military, they would make a survival situation actually seem pretty - nice!" *flash to MRE ingredients laid out on the tray*. Well done sir!
4:50-4:55 kinda seems pretty[transitions] nice!mmmmmmmk
The Anime Master yeah, he nailed that edit! 😂
Love how they packed it it looks like a beautiful bar of silver

NotKarramel, this must not be caramel.
Haha, I'm german and just noticed that these are not - caramel for an english speaking person
ITS Just emergency caramel . Idk why they call it so
Because a "Notfall" in german is an emergency. Thusly, "Not(fall)karamelle" are emergency caramels.
Piergeiron i can't even imagine ever needing an emergency caramel haha
Kobe W oh wow i did not zee this
The squareness of that meat bar makes it even more desirable
Fleischwürfel literally means "meat cube"
I’m betting “Fleisch” is flesh and “würfel” is cube.
Perhaps is a Fleischwürfen the machine that manufactures them by Würfening Fleich?

"This is some of the best chocolate I've had in my life." ...People overlook German chocolate's quality! Germany makes excellent chocolates. In general, I actually prefer German to Swiss chocolates.
In my opinion German Chocolate is very very good! Isn't that hard find better German chocolat than swiss ones, like 50/50, however Swiss Chocolate is the best if we talking about the high-end chocolates. If you go to a traditional Swiss maker chocolate blows your mind. Expensive but the better you can have.
I live in Switzerland :)
german here. i have never ever seen chocolate with cola flavour!? o.O
scho-ka-kola is pretty common in supermarkets.
in which country do you live?
germany. you can get them at edeka and at every bigger supermarkt of other chains.
LOL "It's 56 years old....it's a compressed meat bar............and...I think it's still edible!"

This is my favorite MRE on the channel, great find
You are an absolute legend. I love your videos!
It amazes me at the quality difference in packaging and content between the US rations of this period and the German ones. This one in particular seems incredibly advanced
i don't know the square metal box does seem quite likely to split, they added those little L shaped spacer he called them to stop it getting crushed if sat on but sharp corners easily split. I imagine an east german ration from this time would be a very very differnt story though... probably a chicken thigh wrapped in a handkerchief :p
Common Logic so is your English..

Omg
Hahahaha "woah" 😂
"I don't know if I'm going to try it, it just smells..." *takes a bite*. Lmfao
I've been wondering. How long does it take for time to catch up with the MRE's once opened? Your videos are great dude. You talking about 56 year old survival rations like its vintage wine is priceless. It's always great to watch someone that's passionate about what they do.✌️
this is makes me hungrier then food network
