- This British Royal Air Force Emergency Flying Ration MK 9 is the pinnacle in survival ration quality and design. The Emergency Flying Ration MK has been in service for over 75 years - making it one of the longest running rations still produced. It has gone through extensive changes over the decades, and the MK 9 has been in service since the early 1980's.

The most typically British thing ever. Stranded on a boat in the middle of the ocean.... and you get a wad of tea inside your survival ration.
Jake Lockyer I don’t like tea
Wouldn’t the caffeine dehydrate you too lol?
But of course 😉
But no chips....
nope, you get far more hydration from the water in the coffee then you lose from the small amount of caffeine in it.
same story with the oxo cube & salt pack in the water.
Directions: eat one bar slowly.
Steve: alright, I'm gonna eat all of them at once. Nice.

I bought 1 of these a few years ago and the water purification tablets came in the plastic bag the instructions came in.
They usually come sealed with extra sticky white tape that has 2 bands of tape running vertically either side of the label and a 2 inch band of the extra sticky white tape wrapped around where the 2 tins meet, and it looks like your ration had already been opened as it was not the original tape.
The original tape is incredibly difficult to remove as it is so sticky and still leaves a sticky glue residue on the container after removal.
The water purification tablets might have been removed after they expired and were not replaced as they usually expire after 3 years from manufacturing.

Hey everybody, back from a short hiatus with 2 new videos.
This RAF Emergency Flying Ration Mark 9 and a 1979 Food Packet Long Range Patrol.
These are two relatively low key videos to enjoy while I work on a massive project that has been my main focus for the last 10 days or so.
That project is a huge 6 man prototype ration from 1961 - it's mostly freeze dried (and with smokes).
A true discovery. So stay tuned for that.
In the meantime, I hope you all enjoy this RAF ration and LRP. Aiming to have the next video ready by Halloween.
See you all then!
Steve1989MREInfo Nice, love your videos Steve.
Nice, looking forward to your vid Steve, keep up the great work 😆😆

Excellent presentation, as always! Having served as an Army LRRP (Co. G, 143d Infantry -- 1981-85. This was one of only two LRRP companies remaining in the post-Nam era, and both were part of the National Guard rather than the Regular Army) during the early 1980s and my unit worked extensively with several of our European counterparts, including 21st and 23rd SAS. Their SOP mandated making one's own survival kits. Note the plural -- each man was expected to make and carry two: one based on the standard MOD mess tin and worn on one's belt kit (called LBE in the US Army), the other a small metal box of one's choice the size approximately that of a packet of cigarettes and carried in a shirt or trouser pocket. A certain amount of individual discretion was allowed concerning the contents as long as the essentials were packed. Both were to be sealed with electrical tape. I still have both of mine : one packed in a Netherlands forces mess tin (quite similar to the UK version) and carried in a re-purposed 100-rd SAW ammo pouch, the other in a re-used Altoids box. The RAF Mk.9 kit is clearly very well thought out, of high quality, and definitely shows its evolution from the kits I've just described. Good troops use their imagination with adding "quality of life" items to their kits: curry powder and mustard powder were also very popular with the Brits, while a lot of Americans have a taste for stuff like Old Bay, chili powder, plain black pepper or whatever other spice mixes one can find at the supermarket. All of those can cover a LOT of culinary sins in an emergency! In place of manufactured food bars, we more commonly carried sealable plastic bottles packed with rice or other grains of choice (I preferred buckwheat, which is more nutritionally complete than rice and goes really well with beef or chicken broth. This is the main ingredient of the _kasha_ one finds in many Eastern European rat-packs, BTW). Once again, a good presentation!
William. Overdue thanks for your military service. The world is much safer because of heroes like you. 😁🎖🪖
Just in case too, for anyone confused about the contents list saying the water purification tabs "are in the survival kit" - that means this kit, not another. They were indeed missing. Check this one fella's video out - he had them in his. Oasis brand water tabs - just like in British 24hr ORPs. ruclips.net/video/DUypNhWrpXA/видео.html
Your tablets weren't missing Steve, look at the band that you took off right before the tape. It had the tablets on them. Check the white band again bud ;) Your kit was made weirdly compared to his.
I refuse to watch another person's videos. #nice
RAF survival kit (go pack) is separate kit from his/ her emergency flying ration pack. You just a bit twitchy because you drank 2 packs of tea and 3 packs of coffee and load of sugar at once
Redien I was just about to post the same :)
Redian, I checked that outer band. Nothing is on it. Sorry man, this kit was missing the water tabs - trust me. Check this video: ruclips.net/video/DUypNhWrpXA/видео.html
Cut to 4:14 on his video.
Since it was sealed with electrical tape, possibly someone took out the water purification tabs before you got it. There's no way to know if it was opened with that kind of seal.
Mister Hat it says they are in the survival kit. This is a food ration kit. Assuming like it says on the container, this whole thing would be one part of an emergency kit on board a RAF plane.
Yes it’s not the original tape they seem to be wrapped in as it is not the white coloured extra sticky tape that is incredibly difficult to remove and leaves a sticky residue after removal.
They come with a 2 inch wrap of tape around the middle of where the 2 containers meet and a thinner wrap of tape each side of the adhesive label that secured both tins together securely.
That’s how mine came and have seen similar taped boxes on eBay over the years.
Mister Hat maybe the puritabs have a short shelf life and were removed deliberately?
Fuck you.
Yunus - Jonah I'll have you know we are incredibly competent when it comes to Rationing and MREs how do you think we survived 2 world wars our soldiers were the best equipped (literally, that's a fact) and we fed our soldiers very well as we had learned from previous experiences such as India that food is the most important part of winning a war as it is what drives your soldiers
Fun Fact: The British used wrappings around the trouser leg and boots in order to keep the soldiers legs warm and unhindered in WW1. An idea we got from the Indians when we fought them on previous occosations.
The clinking noises you modify when knocking water off of whatever you stirred a cup with are always the most pleasing things to listen to. Love it.
You must have numbed your taste buds if you need salt for Oxo!
Maybe a special type, due to water concerns
@@RobinTheBot Nope that's regular Oxo. Use it to make gravy

Hey Steve! I love how you describe the OXO cubes in this ration as bouillon. I was brought up in a working class town called Wigan in the NW of England. We lived off OXO cubes when times were hard. Mum used to dish em out in mugs with some bread to dip in. :)
did you do the white thickener trick to make it like a soup too?

*Me: Steve you're ruining it*
yeah thats me as well :( i was suffering during watching him pouring the tea into the glass cup
It was absolute agony watching that still good video
You know the water was warm when he poured it into the cup?
Sugar dissolves pretty quickly in warm/hot water...
ravercorum20 I think you can click the stirs together
It was instant tea not leaf tea. I know, instant tea, a few years ago I did actually have cause to try some it will do in a pinch but tea bags, or better still loose leaf, in a proper teapot make the best tea, remember fresh drawn water poured over the leaves at the top of the boil, and always remember to warm the teapot before hand!
a true englishman would pack more tea and less food. the biscuit blocks you can make a porridge out of and are the only thing you can't get commercially but are basically lifeboat biscuits.
the stock cubes are mainly for creating forage stews to give some flavour.
the US did some compressed biscuit bars that were a good swap item.
AND that was instant tea too, with powdered milk! I noticed there was branded coffee (Nescafe), beef stock (Oxo), but the tea was no name.
Steve actually teaches how to use these kits as opposed to just enjoying them & amusing us. I appreciate that!🇺🇸

Nice year for me...
OXO cubes were probably the first dried stock cubes, being made with the process invented by Otto Liebig in the 19th century. The OXO building, the headquarters of the company is on the South bank of the Thames, marked by a tower with the word 'OXO' in stained glass on it's sides. An OXO cube mixed into boiling water is a very warming, comforting, and satisfying drink on a cold day.
brianartillery what it needs though is some salt...
Was it oxo or bovril that was developed from a need from the British government to supply a nourishing meaty drink to its army during war? I’m not sure which.
Bovril was first created in 1870, though it was originally called "Johnston's beef fluid" after the name of the inventor in Scotland. The name of the product only changed to Bovril in 1889 with the formation of the company of the same name, though the recipe didn't change. Strangely enough, the demand which provoked the creation came from the French army first, though of course it was later used by the British army, perhaps most widely during WW1.
The confusion is certainly justified though, for several reasons: The original "oxo" beef stock product was a semi-liquid paste, not unlike bovril both in taste and composition. Oxo cubes were also used in British army rations, beginning in WW1 and are still used in British military rations today. Plus of course while both brands were started by separate companies, today they are both owned by Unilever, so there is no longer any real competition between the two.
Bovril definitely has more actual meat content than OXO, just going by taste and personal experience and everything (I've not looked up stats about either, so feel free to disprove me), and is a paste that looks more akin to Marmite or Vegemite. Plenty of people enjoy a cup of bouillon from an OXO cube, like me, but making a drink from Bovril seems to be more.. official? OXO always talk about using it as a base for making your own soups or stews, rather than having on its own.
Anyway, now I'm thinking about the line from Spaced:
"I'll have a pint of the brown stuff."
"[giggles], you can't drink a pint of Bovril"
I Love An OxO Cube In A Coffee Mug With Boiling Water And Some Pepper. Luvly!!

Instructions
1. All food components in this pack may be eaten ONLY when about 3 pints of drinking water per man per day are available.
2. Used efficiently the rations will provide sustenance for a number of days, even when doing hard work, provided that fresh water is available.
3. The circumstances in which you find yourself must decide the amount to eat each day. Plan this carefully, endeavoruring to eat a portion of food each day. As a general rule, it is not necessary to eat very much on the first day of the survival period.
4. It is not essential for most men to drink water during the first day of the survival period. Obvious exceptions are those who are injured or losing body water at an excessive rate by seating, vomiting or diarrhoea. If possible each man, after the first day, should drink at least one pint (hal a litre) of fresh water per day. Under some circumstances this may be impossible. However, even 3/4 pint per man per day can sustain life for quite long periods, depending upon the climatic conditions and other circumstances.
5. At all times conserve body water, for man can survive longer without food than he can without water. During survival at sea and in very hot climates, utilize shade and breeze where possible and avoid unnecessary exertion. If marching move by night if possible.
6. NO MATTER HOW THIRSTY YOU ARE DO NOT DRINK SEA WATER AND DO NOT ADD SEA WATER TO GRESH WATER RATIONS. Hovever, if a few drops of sea water get into your fresh water rations by mistake, this is not serious.
7. Fresh water should be purified before it is consumed. This can be achieved by boiling or using the water purifying tablets provided. Sea water cannot be purified by either of these methods.
Contents
Drinks
Beef Stock 'Cubes' - half a 'cube' to a lidful of water. (Note sterilisation of water)
Coffee or Tea - if the water has not been sterilised with Puritabs, or previously boiled, then it must be boiled during the making of coffee and tea.
Milk Powder - add to drinks as required.
Sugar - use as preferred.
Food Packs (Flavoured bars or tablets)
Remove carefully from the laminate pouch so that these can be used again to store water or food.
Eat the food portions only when hungry.
Not mor than eight portions a day.
Eat only one tablet at a time.
Chew Slowly and Well
Salt - when doing hard work, and seating vigoursly, AND WHEN PLENTY OF DRINKING WATER IS AVAILABLE, salt should be taken. Do not take salt if water is in short supply. If you take extra salt you need extra water. the salt will also help remove leeches when applied to their point of attachment.
Spatula - all purpose mixing utensils.
Box
Use the box and lid as cooking pots. Use the empty food bags for storing water and food components. The four lengths of wire make 'loop' handles for the box. The ends of a length of wire should be placed in the holes at one end of the box and bent in the form of a hook.
NOTE: The box hold about 3/4 pint water when full to the holes for the wire.
STERILISATION OF WATER
Fresh water must be sterilised before drinking using either of the two methods below.
If water is muddy it should be filtered through a handkerchief, piece of sheeting, or other available material.
The tablets are the first method of choice.
a. Water Purifying Tablets
Thes are found in the survival kit.
Add 1 tablet tot he polythene bag or lid full of water then wait 10 minutes before using.
b. Boiling
Heat water until it boils. Boil for as long as is practible. If stored, keep in a clean bag or other clean container.
SEA WATER IS NOT PURIFIED BY BOILING OR PURITAB TABLETS
Thank you.

Well rumor has it that an army ranger stabbed a militant to death with a US MRE spoon as a weapon of last resort. They definitely were strong enough when I was in to do it, but I have my doubts about sharp enough to break through.

I wish my meals were just MREs.. like they seem perfect to be just your 3 meals a day and it’s just so simple lol... I could do it everyday
Vince I agree except they’re probably more expensive than normal meals. Also most MRE are made for soldiers who are burning through a lot more calories than a regular civilians. I’m not an expert but I assume you wouldn’t want to eat these everyday if you weren’t doing a lot of physical activity.
Apparently they give you constipation, too. Handy for combat, not so much for the office
