- This is a double feature review of the modern Swedish Air Force Bailout Ration and the old version from the 1970's-80's. The old version was filmed March 2018 and was pulled from my archives (I have about 40 reviews archived and growing along with the videos that get released right after filming/editing) - a fascinating look at the evolution (and de-evolution in some aspects) of this ration.

That is actually one out of 3 can's that comes with the survival kit, ( the 2011 one) You are missing out of 1 can that is filled with fuel and comes also with a stand to put the third one on that is the actual food, other versions comes even equiped with a fishing rod and a small pocket knife.
That makes it a bit better. Without this context, what was shown in the video itself, looked to me like a parody of a survival ration.

Reminds me of a "survival kit in a sardine can" that I had when I was a kid, and always carried it with me on hikes and camping trips.

Dextro Energy is a german company - i found one of those bars from '94 at my grandparents place and found it still edible. Back then they were named "DextroEnergen"

The bread ties are for marking a route. The hose enables you to hid under water.
You can use your bread tie to close off the tube of an enemy who is hiding underwater
You can't breathe through a hose like that underwater, it's a trope used in spy movies and doesn't work in real life.
if you're trying to hide under less than 6 inches/15cm of water, you're going to be wet, cold, and captured.
The survival ration tins always look huge until you pick them up. Then you realize they're the size of a cigarette pack!

One of the best channels on RUclips, just a man sharing his interest and knowledge about survival rations with the rest of us
Considering that the Swedish Air Force is purely for defensive purposes I would say that water purification tabs are unnecessary since the water in and around Sweden can be safely consumed pretty much wherever you are as long as you a little bit of common sense. I was born in Norway and I would be very surprised if someone died of dehydration in Norway/Sweden/Finland in a survival situation. I don't think they consider the risk of ending up somewhere else to be significant enough to even include purification tabs because of the abundance of clean water in these regions.

Any random north american would die because if you drink untreated water here you tend to get extremely sick and potentially die anyway. The sole exception is like, pure mountain snowmelt streams in the rockies

Always throw these out, twist and tuck. I'd probably die in the jungle. My bread loaf would get all untucked.
The dextrose candies remind me of my days as an emt. Obviously we used strait glucose. But the point was the same, get the blood sugar up or level so you can think properly.
It's debatable as to whether you'd need a drink with them, I used to carry some as emergency supplies as I'm Type 1 Diabetic, the plain ones are foul and you would need something to wash them down as they're really dry.

The dextro energy tablets have been popular in Germany for ages. As a kid, I would get several and a cup of tea at stations along the route of Volksmarwches. It was something to look forward to during long walks through scenic settings. I know everyone else probably googled "suketter" but it appears to be the same as sucralos, cyclamates or sacarin. That means they put a zero-calorie sweeter in a survival ration.
You forgot to eat the matches, how am I supposed to know if the matches are a good quality it you didn't taste one?

I'm pretty impressed of your pronunciation of Västergötland tbh.
The coat of arms on the matches is the coat of arms from my home region :) I live about an hours drive away from a major air base where the Swedish Hercules aircrafts have their home hangar, and all JAS 39 Gripen pilots of the world get their training on that specific type of fighter jet. It’s a really cool base to visit when they have air shows open to the public. The little hard candies look like it could be a candy called Nickel which was rather popular when I was younger and even before I was born (I was born in 1985) Nickel can still be found sometimes but it’s not the same as it once was. Just guessing on the candy type based on the shape and size and the pattern on them.

John Stacy yeah the kit is not well thought out. They could’ve gave replaced the birth packs with cubes and been able to pack more in and replaced the sweetener with iodine tablets and used thin metal wire ranger than the twist ties

No need for water purification if fighting in Sweden. We have great water quality, just boil lake water. You can just drink from streams. Abroad, sure.

Like i expected... Comming from an alpine country i have first learned what water purification tablets were from books. Whenever in the mountains, we could always drink from any little stream... Even most of our lakes have drinking water quality. So i supposed, that so far north even if there aren't that many mountains in sweden the water situation might be similar. (Because of the huge amounts of forrestal areas, and the temperature setting, isn't quite a tropical island yet ;-) )

Love your videos. I've lived off MREs for 10+ days in Ft. Irwin, CA as part of my training.
If I'm not mistaken, you could use those plastic bags, the tubing and the twist-ties to make a ghetto de-salinization device if you are in the open sky with saltwater or brackish/dirty water around. Excellent to include in a kit like this.

Agreed, where are the water purifiers? Or at least some matches and fuel tabs.
I can only assume it is part of the second kit/ration the pilots are supplied.
The tubing is a great tool for concentrating breath when starting a fire/re-kindling with less than ideal materials. The paper and soluble fats of (some) bullion wrappers also make decent fire starters. The tubing is also interesting because it would be useful for ingesting fluid if your jaw is swollen or broken from cockpit ejection/crashing down; in that same vein, the dextrose candies being a hard tablet would make them relatively water-soluble as a beverage. Instant Kaffe is just plain good for morale in any situation. Thanks for the post!

I've had one of these kits. The trick with the lid is don't pull it all the way open and the put a slight fold in it and it strengthens it to make a strong handle.
