Eating 33 Year Old US MRE 1984 Ham & Chicken Loaf Vintage MRE Review Meal Ready to Eat Taste Test

- Check out this perfectly preserved 33 year old MRE! The Meal Ready to Eat was first put into major production in 1981 - this classic 1st generation Meal, Ready to Eat should have been spoiled over a decade ago. It's storage conditions had to be absolutely strict and consistent these last 3 decades. Never thought I would finish an entire MRE from 1984.

Hey there Steve. Long time watcher here. I'm a disabled marine who joined in 84 so this episode was special for me.
I had to comment this time because up until about 6 months ago, I routinely bought usgi surplus cases, but for whatever reason all of my sources either jacked the price for an a/b 2 case pak from an average of $75-$100 way up to like $250 now, or they plain stopped carrying them.
The first thing I noticed was no Tabasco bottle. It seemed like they were in everything.
The pears were supposed to be rehydrated in the pouch with your "canteen" water. Never seen them eaten dry. Ever. Hell, we all got a kick out of watching little bits of fruit appear from seemingly dust chunks. Strawberries were the best. It was like magic.
The crackers. Absolutely inedible. They were disgusting and the peanut butter was worse. Especially chunky. Omg. I can taste it now as I type. 🤮😆
All the mains were delicious, the most unpleasant of them being the hot dogs. Just plain and boring and unheated, they really sucked. And we did not ever heat them up at rftd at camp pendleton in boot. Rip it open, wolf it down and off you go. Never even got to drink the coffee.
The other thing we didn't do is shit!! 5 days. When we finally got to the end of the week, we were marched to porta potties and well, to put it lightly, sounded like a platoon of men having babies out of their butts. It was funny and painful at the same time. We all swore it was by design so we'd extract every bloody gram of nutrients that were in the mres.
The new mres were like Hilton food compared to the mess we got back then but as you mentioned, science experiments. 😆
Being homebound disabled, it was a great activity for me to have one every day, even got myself a steel tray to make it easier to eat from my chair. I sure hope that whatever caused the explosion in price, goes away and they return to the $50 per 12 in the case price, soon. I need my mre fix dammit!!! 😂😂😂
Thank you so much for all these videos. Its really great for my day and mental health. Really. 🙏🙏🙏
Thanks for your service and your input
Not shit for 5 days damn I go 2-3 times a day. It has to be this food lol

As someone who had this menu when it was "fresh" I can tell you it was my favorite. The pears were like gold to me. The ham and chicken loaf was great, kind of tasted like canned tuna.
I enjoyed the Chicken-ala-King. The cheddar cheese and crackers was also, special. I remember the cheese would have to be kneaded because of oil seperation and it was chock full of little grains of sharp tangy flavour.
It was much better with some Tabasco on it.
@@brentengelhart5 I loved the Chicken Ala King...people hated it....the dehydrated Burger (or Pork Chop) were hideous. Prisons would riot if you 'fed' them that. Cheese and crackers were the bomb.

When your Veteran Grandpa tells you ‘we’re having leftovers tonight’.
I remember in OCS (1989) during the final patrolling exercises in the woods, some of the Ham & Chicken Loaf had spoiled. We had already been in the woods (New Yorks Hudson River Valley) 5 days with constant rain, freezing nights, and half of the 85 who went into the field had already been medevacked to the rear with upper respiratory problems, broken bones (from slipping on rocks), etc. I was the RTO when a radio call came in instructing our squad not to eat the ham & chicken loaf MRE, it had made a dozen trainees sick and they had to be pulled from the field. That left the final miserable 25 of us out in the rain and the cold, at which point we gathered up all the ham and chicken loaf MREs we had and "ATE THEM". Hoping against hope to exit that miserable field problem via food poisoning. Unfortunately, our MRE(s) were all good and we finished the 9-day field exercise. I used to actually like both the Ham Loaf and the Ham & Chicken loaf. Some of the MRE(s) in the 80(s) had John Wayne Bars. They looked like small lengths of compressed 2 x 2 sections of extruded sawdust wood product. But they were sugary and yummy. Good times!!!!
I also enjoy when my food doesn't numb or swell my mouth or throat. That is what I look for in a food.
