I was trying to do all the cleaning of the small parts in the focus system, it will say the semi-circular encoder strip and the small lens, even the opto coupler I cleaned but it did not work :-(
So I took a very closer look in my microscope and there was some small marks in the small lens.

This 100% worked for me. Didn't think it would work but gave it a shot. Everything looked spotless but cleaned anyway; after I put it back together the autofocus was so quick and accurate even at 85mm (wouldn't focus past 24mm prior). So glad!

That's a great video, I'm not going to be able to repair my lens now; it seems like a big job. This issue just started happening to my leans recently
Great video, but an hour and a half and all those tiny fragile parts makes me just consider buying another lens. Patients and really good eyesight is a must to do this task.

Hi mikeno62. First of all, thanks for the video, really useful. I actually have the same problem, did the cleaning and nothing comes better. I did notice something when I was testing after assembling, the focal length info in the picture was wrong above 35mm. It starts ok, but the it goes, not random, but sometimes high, sometimes low. I did the test without the zoom brush that way is always 85mm. Now I disassembled it again thinking to clean up the tracks of the zoom ring brush and notice some corrosion in a path. I took a picture, will find how to send it to you. Maybe there is a problem with that, because the af starts hunting above 35mm. Maybe it worth to take a look.

I have exactly the same problem, 17-35mm autofocus works fine, and when the focal length 35-85 autofocus starts to run to the left to the right and can not focus . Disassembled the object on this video and cleaned as shown in the video, did not help... unfortunately. In any case, I thank the author for this video ! If someone can fix yourself , write here your method and this will help many people, thank you.
