Mike's repair videos are more engaging than anything Hollywood put out in the last 10 years👏👏

Thanks for the video. I had the ERR code as well. When you said that something was out of line I just banged the flash in the palm of my hand. That worked, lucky for me,

I fixed two SB5000 thanks to your video, the internals are not exactly the same. But the issue I was having with the "ERR" code is very closely related. Thank you!

Thanks for the video! I have the same flash and, the same error. I followed your instructions almost step by step, making only a few small adjustments. For discharging the capacitor, I used a desk lamp, which worked well-I managed to bring the voltage down from 160V to 54V. I was very careful not to touch any wires or the system during the process.
In my case, the metal part wasn’t blocked at the top. Instead, a piece of plastic behind the flash mechanism was raised higher than it should have been, causing the zoom mechanism to get stuck. I just had to unlock it, and that did the trick. It worked!

Excellent video Mike, I have that flash and it is an excellent tool, I have an F4 that failed with the shutter button, the shutter sticks and does not stop, I will send it to you and can you record a video?

OK, so I bought this pen/tweezer capacitor discharger from Amazon. Not sure if the contacts reach down far enough into the SB700 to do a discharge. I have a feeling they don't.Never saw a light one way or another saying they have voltage or not. I took some simple 14 gauge electrical wire and attached a piece to each pen tip and I'm sure that reached down far enough, but again no light one way or another. Is 14gauge too thick? to try and make that "extension"?? Something else I could do? I guess I can't attach a photo to this comment to show what I did...

I connected some 14g wires to a lightbulb and then into the SB700 where I would insert the pen capacitator discharge tool. No light in the bulb. Batteries have been out of the unit for days... OK to proceed with this repair? I don't have any other way to test to see if there is any voltage in the unit... It has been "on" for days with no batteries within as well...

Hello! You can discharge the capacitor in other ways. To the same resistor as you used, you can connect an incandescent lamp in series, of the old type, if there is no such resistor, you can connect two incandescent lamps in series, and by their dimming, you will see how the capacitor discharges. There are a lot of options here, any household heating devices: an iron, an electric stove, a heating radiator, a soldering iron, even an electric tool with a series-connected lamp will be able to discharge the capacitor.
