  • There are a number of videos on how to take this lens apart, but I couldn't find one on assembly, After searching for anything on assembly I decided to figure it out, and do a video, if I succeeded (which I did and it works!) I would put this up for others who do not want another pencil holder. BTW parts are available from Amazon and eBay.

You helped a lot of guys , especially where the metals fittings go in. Just one thing you do not need to remove the silver ring on the bottom of the inner barrel. and when you fit the new focus cable, fit the black holder on the inner barrel so it lies flat on the silver inner ring. Then fit the rest of the cable to the inner barrel. Expect to open your lens a few times even with all the advice.

Having spent about 30 minutes disassembling the lens, I thought it would be straight forward ressembling until the 3 parts, never mentioned in the RUclips video, fell out! I spent several hours having replaced the offending ribbon lead which was relatively easy to instal, attempting to reassembe the lens.......... then I came across your video! Thank you so very much for all your help.
May I suggest that anyone attempting this repair takes photos before removing each individual part and also, as suggested here for one part, you mark where the different sections line up with a marker pen or Tippex.
I also found it easier to secure the part that I replaced with the little plastic grommet and screws (x3) to ensure it was seated correctly.
In addition I found that it helped with those 3 little 'tricky' parts, to prevent them from continually falling out, to secure them in place with their correspnding screws and only removig them when the other 6 grommets and screws had been put in place!
Thanks again for saving me a bundle because at one stage the lens was almost launched across the garden with a view to purchasing a new one from Ebay! By following this video, in conjunction with others, I have saved myself almost £200 (USD300)!!!

+Theseus58 Thanks for the response, I did mark some of the points, however going through it for the first time, It was kind of a blind trail to know where to mark and what to secure, the project for me took the better part of three days. When the three parts dropped out I panic'd, I went back through all the disassemble videos, but no one showed them. I spent the better part of day two, sitting and trying to fit them in some where logical... When I finally found where they went things began to be solvable. I did shoot shots everywhere I though important. The lens barrel is where it all happens, And for people reading these comments, when disassembling the inner lens barrel, take lots of photos, and pay very close attention to each part. The three parts that fall out and cause grief are the second from last ring of screws opposite the mounting end of the lens,. Thanks again for your response, it is encouraging to know that my efforts are helping.

+Theseus58 BTW did you do the fold-over crimp of the ribbon like Canon did? I modified mine a bit and did an "S" loop so there was no crimp to cause ribbon failure...?

Your video helped me out a lot after following the disassemble video (which leaves you with the biggest job still to do) and replacing the diaphragm part with the ribbon cable. It was still quite a challenge putting it all back together, but your video saved me a lot of time and hassle so thanks very much for making it!

Thanks a lot! I was able to take may lens apart and repair it, thanks to one of the guides found on RUclips. But when I re-assembled it, it had problems. It turned out I did almost everything right, except the alignment of the focus pin and fork. It's good you paid special attention to that! Btw. as long as the zoom rubber is off, you can check if the focus pin and fork are corrected right by looking through one of the 3 slits. I was even able to correct the problem without removing the outer barrel, just through the slit!
Although you didn't cover everything in detail, you showed enough details to be able to re-assemble the lens.
Btw. the desoldering of the old cable and the soldering of the new cable requires a lot of experience and the right tools, because the connections are easily damaged when soldering. Therefore, my advice to everyone reading this in advance of an attempted repair is not to bother soldering the flex cable but just ordering the complete part from eBay. It's costing only slightly more and will save you from killing your part while trying to solder it and still having to order the complete part.

"...you can check if the focus pin and fork are corrected right by looking through one of the 3 slits. I was even able to correct the problem without removing the outer barrel, just through the slit!" --- Same happened to me when I re-assembled everything, THANKS for the info about adjusting it by simply removing the zoom rubber. The manual focus ring is still a bit stiff now, but at least the focusing works for both auto and manual mode. I might take it apart another day just to see if I can adjust the stiffness of the manual focus ring.

best demo by a long way, explained in a way anyone can understand. There was a skiped bit but no problem, lots on this lens on youtube (canon should repair these for free, its a default with so many people having to find a fix or spend out silly money for repair) Thanks Idoho for taking the trouble to post this, Top Guy ;-)

Thanks for that, 30 mins to dismantle and 3 days to put it back together, works a treat now thanks, error messages and autofocus works perfect with new diaphragm and cable. You have to definitely mark the components with a pen before you take ANYTHING APART, take photos of every step, which will save you hours, trust me. I could probably do the whole thing again in about an hour, now I know what I am doing.

Thank you very much. I repaired my Flex cable and assembled successfully. Just to mention, it is easy to open lens but a nightmare to assemble it back. Your video has been very informative and good. Thanks

Thank you for this video - essential viewing if you are thinking of taking the lens apart. Definitely do what everyone else says in the comments and buy the ready-soldered part unless you're a wiz at soldering. I bought mine on ebay from China for only a few $$$ more! Take plenty of photos (video if you can) as you disassemble it. Place the disassembled parts in different containers for each section you take apart. I also used a marker pen before disassembling the inner and outer barrels, which helped to line them up when re-assembling. Good luck!

Thanks, wished you could too, however I am amazed how many people have decided to repair that lens. And still don't know why people did the (incomplete) tear down and left the viewer hanging. So glad my efforts helped, enjoy your lens.

Many thanks for this guide. I've managed to complete the repair. The major issues with the device pertained to lining up the little hook bracket that is screwed to the barrel, the silver fork and the plastic bit from the bottom of the inner piece and the contacts.

Thank you so much for your time in this video. It help me assemble the inner core. Though one thing in the alignment of the plastic inserts is incorrect the top lens is inserted as you said originally and the bottom goes into the one you then later changed. I tried to align it the way you say but it will not go in to the groves. Thanks again.

Really helpfull video, Thnaks man. But, missed some important parts for me. First is to show the correct position for the brand new part, cause it do have a position. And 2nd missed part is the metal bracket that forces the "s" you do not show how install it. (it determines the position for the brand new piece). Or explain us, why you don't put it on!! May be this is the reason of the malfunction!

I just took mine apart to get rid of some dust inside, now I don't have focus, auto or manual...where did I go wrong in the re-assembly? The autofocus does make noise, and it sounds like it is trying to hook onto something, but it doesn't. You totally skipped over this part...

+Kenneth Miller It is hard to say all the elements are connected to the barrel, and travel in cam guides, if you missed connecting and element, might be the cause. in the inner barrel, you cam the front front element with an arm that comes up and mates to the outer focus ring as I remember, the inner elements run on cams 4 as I remember the front 3 were plastic with screws that went through the center of the plastic guides and secured the element in side, the fourth were three metal guides they were the ones that fell out and caused me so much grief till I figured them out, If you can manually focus then the cam spacers are probably OK, I would then recheck the connector ribbons that control focus servos... good luck.
